Spectacular Honeymoon Vacation!!!
Everything about the Dominical area and the Zbel's villa was perfect! We could not have asked for a better trip for our honeymoon. Many thanks to Storm, Sharon, all the guys at Jolly Roger (fantastic food, atmosphere, friendly service, and margaritas) for making our brief stay absolutely amazing.
The overall highlight of the trip was the horseback ride up to Nauyaca Waterfalls...Unbelievable!! Surf lessons with Raymond at Green Iguana were awesome and the food all around the area was spectacular (Roadshack, Tortilla Flats & Porque No? just to name a few).
We are already planning a trip back with friends as soon as we can!
Thanks again to Storm & Co. for everything! Tell blackjack we said hi!

Ideal Costa Rican Villa
Villa Tranquila in Dominicalito couldn't be more perfect! Storm and amy are excellent hosts: thoughtful, informative, and full of fun ideas. From the detailed driving instructions from San Jose to making sure we had genuine Costa Rican coffee and a pineapple on the counter when we arrived, they thought of everything. During our stay in this modern two-bedroom villa, we relaxed on the amazing porch with private plunge pool and million dollar ocean view. A quick drive north brought us fun nights in the surfer town of Dominical, south brought us exhilarating zip lining and river tours, and we found numerous world class beaches in between. We ate the best chicken wings ever at the Bar Jolly Roger and had a romantic, decadent meal at Exotica, a french restaurant nestled in the jungle in Ojochal. Both restaurants are a must when visiting the southern zone! We couldn't have asked for a more perfect villa, location, adventures, or hospitable hosts. Take it from us, book now before someone else does!! I know we'll be back as soon as we can!
O'Brien family Vacation 2013
Terrific View of Dominicalito Beach, surfers and fishing boats. Comfortable, clean, modern villa with aC. Small pool perfect for kids or just to cool off with an Imperial. Perfect location, 35 mins to Manuel anotonio Costa Rica's most poplular national park or Quepos for world class sail fishing. Want to learn to surf? Surf school teaches on the beach you can walk to.
Need some help booking a tour, finding a restaurant? No problem your hosts are local and very responsive. Not an overly touristy area so you can find the Costa Rica of yore.Sattelite TV enabled us to catch a couple hockey games! Terrric value. Try the owner's place for outstanding hot wings and burgers!
Amazing house with breathtaking views.
The Zbel family were very helpful with every aspect of our trip, any available resource they had they offered to make the experience more enjoyable. The house overlooks the Pacific, where you can watch the sun set in the private pool, the house is spacious and very comfortable. The location is mind blowing and the views of the Pacific from the mountain are breathtaking. There is every possbible amenity available.
All the comforts of home only in paradise!
We had so much fun here. We stayed for a week here; my husband and I and our 4 year old son. This villa is really cute, cozy and has all the comforts of home ( cable, wifi, comfy beds, washer/dryer etc ) for those relaxing nights. We usually took it easy at the house at night because the days were such an adventure. Dominical is such a simple surf town with beautiful secret spots everywhere. The Zbels left a book at the villa that was pretty much a key to all of this, like secret waterfalls, some amazing beaches, and pretty much anything you may want to do. The patio on the villa is amazing, the view is heavenly, the pool right there, it was just perfect. It felt like home for a week ( only in paradise ), our 4 year old even called the villa home for a week, it was really sweet. We would return, we are already thinking about going back in 2014. Love Dominical, great memories Thank You Zbels! Pura Vida!
Villa Tranquila in Dominical Costa Rica
Recently three couples traveled to Costa Rica, spending our last week at Villa Tranquila in Dominical.
It was by far our favorite place. Our host and owners Storm and amy Zbel where fantastic. They meet us immediately up arrival and made us feel very welcome. (nice gift in our Villa from them). They provided us with information on activites and good places to eat. If you go to Dominical, be sure to go their restaurant, Jolly Roger (truly the best chicken wings ever). Storm and amy are wonderful people, helpful, honest, and available to help you enjoy your visit to the area. We had a privite swimming pool off our deck which we throughly enjoyed. The Villa was clean, well furnished, and did not lack anything necessary for your stay. They even invite you to use the spices in their cubboard. We did not want for a thing.
I was impressed that amy was always available by phone to answer our questions or to give us information. Very kind and helpful people. Fun too...
All six of us adults were impressed with the Villa and the exceptional sunsets every night. Difficult to describe but the name trully represents the atmosphere (villa
Tranquila) We all came home relaxed, taned, happy and very pleased with our choise of accomodations in Dominical.
Adventure, comfort and joy
Sorry this review is so late. As soon as we arrived back home, reality set in and we were back in the rat race. Storm and amy's condo, Dominical, Amy's role as personal concierge and all of our activities made this the best vacation we've ever had with our 2 adult sons.
We arrived to a traditional home-cooked Costa Rican meal arranged by amy. During the day, we zip-lined, surfed for the first time, rappelled down waterfalls, snorkeled with huge schools of fishes, horseback rode through jungles and the beach, and just wandered on the most beautiful beaches you could image.
In the evening, we had wonderful family time, cooking meals together, recounting our day and taking the time to share each others lives.
As an american who is used to more fully-developed surroundings, we quickly grew to love the simple life of Dominical. Although we loved our visit to Manuel antonio National Park, we shunned the hustle and bustle of a tourist area for the natural, uncomplicated life of this surfing community.
Don't forget to visit Storm's restaurant and read his entertaining ads about his restaurant.
We visited over Thanksgiving, at the end of the rainy season. We learned to surf in the rain, but we didn't even know it was raining.
This vacation was almost magical for us. Although we are close to our 2 sons (who are in their mid 20's), the combination of adventure during the day and comfort at night allow us to really connect and enjoy each others company as adults.
When we all got together again at Christmas, none of us could imagine a better vacation. Thanks, Amy and Storm!
Best place we stayed in Costa Rica!
We travelled extensively this past summer, including over a month in Costa Rica. Of all the places we stayed in Costa Rica (four different places), this was the best by more than a little bit. The place is immaculate and well provisioned. It even has good sharp knives -- a rarity in our traveling experience. We had two of our teenaged kids with us and the place was perfect. There is a pescadero not more than a mile away (next to La Macha) where you can buy very fresh fish very inexpensively. You are walking distance from the beach and from Pozo azul (a waterfall with a pool deep enough to jump and swim in -- which our kids adored). A little ways down the road in Uvita is a grocery store with a lot of american and american-style foods. And you are a reasonable distance from so many great activities -- Oso Caonpy Tours, Adventure atvs, Tree of Life waterfalls (Diamante Waterfall, with other waterfalls, rappelling and a full kitchen in a cave hidden behind a couple of falls -- highly recommended), Manuel antonio National Park (definitely worth getting one of the freelance guides), and, of course, the beaches. Storm and amy are friendly and helpful, and very close by if needed.

Absolutely Perfect Vacation Rental
My husband and I were in Dominical, Costa Rica for 8 days, and they were all made 100% better because of where we stayed. This Villa is the perfect place to call "home" while away from home.
The moment you open the front door, you are blown away by the view of the Pacific ocean. It is spectacular, and was a constant companion during our stay. The furnishings and comfort of the property were first rate. The outdoor area will be where you spend all your time. The palapa provides the perfect place for coffee in the morning, and a cold Imperial in the evenings. We also used the pool almost daily for relief from the hot sun.
The only aspect of our stay that was better than the property, were our fabulous hosts, Storm and amy. It cannot be overstated how helpful and available they were. Amy was there to greet us when we arrived, went over the property, and answered all of our questions.
The small town of Dominical was a taste of "real" Costa Rica. Wonderfully welcoming locals, great food, and a very chill vibe is what you get when you stay here. Right across the street of the Villa is Playa Dominicalito, a great beach to go and walk, surf, or just sit in the sun.
My husband and I went on three tours, all recommended by amy, and they all delivered.
1) Don Lulo's Horseback riding tour to the Nayaua Falls
2) Osa Canopy Ziplining Tour
3) Mangrove Kayak Tour
They were all exactly what we hoped for.
Lastly, Storm's place, The Jolly Roger is a must visit. Fantastic burgers, killer wings, and a great location all equal a perfect end to any great day spent in Costa Rica.
Look no further than this property for your stay in Costa Rica.
Storms villa is awesome!
We stayed at Storm and amy's villa for a few weeks in april and as we expected. it was awesome. When we showed up, there was beer in the fridge...how great is that...seriously. All 5 of us from 3yrs old to 55 loved our stay. Our little dude even learned how to swim in the pool. Could not recommend staying here more. Thanks Zbels!
Canto del Mar
The pictures of the unit do not do it justice. It is much more beautiful than the photographs would suggest.
When you pull up to the guarded gate, you will thank Storm Zbel for his advice that you rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle. This road is very steep! The next big surprise is when you open the front door and see the 270 degree view of ocean and mountains thanks to clever archictural design and site location. This is a luxury unit and location. It has a fabulous dipping pool, oceanview patio, spacious bedrooms (with balcony and ensuite bathroom), modern kitchen, combined dining and living area and beautiful landscaping.
The unit was clean and fully equiped. There is a lot of detailed information available in the unit regarding restaurants, activities, shopping, grocery stores, etc.
So now you know that the unit was fantastic - here is some information on the location. It is 3.5 km from Dominical which is a 4-hour drive from San Jose The drive is gorgeous but you can also fly to Quepos (25 mins from Dominical).
The area is unbelievably beautiful with lots of things to do: scuba, snorkling, riding, zip lines, nature tours...the list is endless. There is a very nice beach within 8 minutes walk, another great surfing beach in Dominical and our favourite Hermosa - miles and miles of often totally vacant beach. In the area there are banks, supermarkets, stores, markets, a library (Uvita) and an array of restaurants ranging from local to american style. Try the Jolly Roger for wings, the Domiloco for world-class tapas and any one of the Domincal restaurants which feature a variety of food types and cooking styles. You will be pleasantly surprised by the quality and service.
In summary, the unit is spectacular, the area is beautiful beyond words and there is plenty to do and see for kids of all ages. Best of all you will be in Costa Rica - a wonderful place filled with wonderful people. See you there.
This Place is awesome!
I have been coming to Dominical each of the last 4 Decembers. This was the first year I decided not to stay in town and I couldn't have been happier with that choice. Storm and amy are awesome hosts (they even invited me to their house to watch football the first Sunday I was there)!
The place was clean and by far the nicest place I have ever rented in CR. The inside is huge, the appliances are great, and the view is unreal! Seeing the sunrise from your bedroom and watching the sunset on the deck at night is a great way to start/end each day.
I recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!!

Great place for families or couples!
Villa Tranquila was absolutely beautiful inside and out! My husband and I visited for one week with my parents and 2 young daughters. The layout of the villa was perfect with the bedrooms downstairs and living area with balcony and pool upstairs. I looked forward to getting up every morning to the beautiful view and sounds of birds. The villa was very well decorated, clean, had a great kitchen and the beds were quite comfortable.
Amy and Storm went above and beyond in their hospitality!! Very helpful in arranging tours and suggesting places to shop and eat. We did make it to the Jolly Roger one night and the wings were the best we've tasted!
We loved having a beautiful waterfall within walking distance. I highly recommend the horseback tour to Nicoya waterfall. Many beautiful beaches close by. I could go on and on... Can't wait to go back!
Thank you amy & Storm for helping to make our vacation to Dominical as great as it was!
Upon booking our stay for Nov.14th-24th, we received immediate contact from Storm and amy. They not only helped us with booking flights, activities, and provided us with detailed directions from the airport, but were there within hours of our check-in to assure we were settled in and had everything we needed. They live close by and were incredibly helpful/available at all times if we needed anything.
The view from the porch overlooks Dominicalito beach. The town of Dominical is just minutes from the villa, and offers a great variety of restaurants, shopping, and Dominical beach-which you can see surfers in the morning while eating breakfast @ Tortilla Flats (one of the top 50 beach bars in the world). If you would rather have something a little more quiet, there are plenty of other beaches within minutes from the villa. There is also a waterfall, within walking distance from the villa.
We traveled mid month of Nov., which was a great time to experience the true varying climate that CR has to offer. Every day seemed to begin with sunshine, with 2-3 hours of rain in the afternoon/evening. While we did a great bit of relaxing, we also had an adventurous experience-we took surf lessons, rode horses to a beautiful waterfall, kayaked through mangroves, and went zip-lining (all of which Storm and amy helped set up for us).
Some things to expect: Pura Vida is like hello/goodbye/how are you to the Ticos-makes you feel very welcome. 4-wheel drive is a must, if you are planning to stay @ Villa tranquila-and definitely if you are going to visit Storm's bar-where he makes some of the best wings we have ever had before! Trouabdors were our favorite. There are ceviche stands around every bend-yum! Everyone is very helpful and kind.
Our 11 days spent in Costa Rica was amazing, and it was even better to have a wonderful house to return home to and incredibly hospitable people to help us along the way.
Christmas in Dominical
Best vacation we ever experienced! Stayed 8-days and needed a few more to see it all. The Zbel's villa is first class and the Dominical area is beautiful.
-Hanging out with the family on the villa deck overlooking Dominicalito for sunsets.
-Surfing at Hermosa, Dominical, and Dominicalito.
-Wings and beer at the Jolly Roger.
-Eating at any of the many restaurants/bars in the area.
-Waterfalls at Nauyaca.
-Kayaking the mangroves.

The Pictures Don't Do Justice...this place is amazing!!
When we decided to go surfing in Costa Rica our next decision was stay at a hotel with amenities or a house without service. The pics looked too good to pass up, so we booked our 10 days with Storm and amy.
Storm gave us perfect directions, at night in a downpour it only took 3 and a half hours to get to the villa. When we arrived we couldn't believe how beautiful the house was! The pictures are beautiful but don't do justice! Great open concept kitchen/living room/dining room with extremely high ceilings, 2 and a half beautiful baths, a bedroom with one king and one with two twins. Everything was very clean and freshly washed (linens). We were stunned when we woke up to breathtaking views, again, the pictures don't do justice! And we used the pool every day! We couldn't have picked a better place!
We were supplied with everything we needed to cook, do laundry and felt so at home. The neighborhood is gated and extremely safe.
There are plenty of great surf breaks close by (across the street), zip lining and tons of other great activities. Parmesan Basil Wings at Jolly Roger's are a must as is the Slebvowitz. The locals are very welcoming and most speak English.
Storm and amy went above and beyond to make our stay great! Our battery died the night before we were going to leave and not only did they have jumper cables, they let us borrow their car to get ours running!
They were great hosts and we had an amazing vacation! We were so sad to leave,we'll be back for sure!
We'd recommend this villa to anyone who's looking for a great place to stay only a few minutes walk, seconds car ride from the beach.

What an Incredible Place to Stay!
This is truly a hidden paradise. The house is beautiful and the view is unbeatable. Storm in very helpful and does everything in his power to make sure that your stay in this house goes beautifully. I will definitely be returning to Costa Rica and staying in this house.
Magical time at Canto Del Mar #16!
My husband, two sons ages 4 & 5, my parents and I spent 7 nights at Canto Del Mar #16 and had an absolutely wonderful time! The house is so beautiful and has all of the amenities needed if you like to relax at the house and cook at home. Since my boys are so young it is very nice to eat at the house and not spend our time searching for restaurants - while I cook, the kids can play in the pool - what could be better! There are several restaurants in Dominical and Uvita to choose from, if cooking is not your thing. The view from the house was amazing, and the walk to the beach was short going downhill, but a climb on the way up. Easy for my family but not possible for my parents, (73 and 80 years old) who were just as happy sitting on the deck looking at the ocean or driving to the beach. Poza azul is 5 minutes from the house and absolutely gorgeous!! A must see while in Dominical. My husband, two sons and I went to Hacienda Baru for ziplining. My boys loved every minute of it and it was very safe. The property is stunning and worth spending time at after the zipline. My husband and I went on the Waves and Caves Kayak tour which was a good workout and a way to see beautiful scenery from the ocean. We were also able to visit the Bar Jolly Roger on evening, and yes, they do have incredible wings and a fabulous view of the ocean! We also took our boys to El Pavon, a tilapia farm in Ojochal - very fun! Our trip would not have been what it was if not for amy and Storm. They are incredible hosts and full of information and assistance for everything you want to see and do. They also have 3 small boys who were instant playmates for my boys - what more could we ask for, seriously?? #16 is suitable for everyone, in my opinion! Dominical is a charming area, and very laid back!! There is as much, if not more, to be offered in the mountains/jungle area of Dominical and Uvita as there is on the beach. It was truly magical!!
My wife and I spent 10 days at Villa Tranquila in January 2011. We had an amazing time. We flew in to San Jose, and the drive took about 3 - 3.5 hours, and it was a beautiful drive. The roads are virtually completely paved. Really the only unpaved part of the drive is the street between the main road and the villa. It is also uphill. Four wheel drive is a must to get up the hill. A few notes:
1. The villa itself - exactly as it appeared in the pictures. The only thing that did not work was the internet. Storm made an attempt at fixing it, but couldn't get it working. To his credit, we told him that we didn't go to Costa Rica to mess around on the internet, and not to worry about it. There were 2 or 3 things we had to get down on the internet - so we went down to Roca Verde, a beach front hotel with wireless internet and great food about 2 miles away. The sunsets were absolutely amazing... I think I took about 50 pictures of just the sun setting over the ocean.
2. The location. We loved the location - there was not a McDonalds within 50 miles (I don't think, but I didn't check). Don't go to this part of Costa Rica if you want Starbucks and american chain restaurants. Go here if you want something more authentic and delicious. There is some good food in town (about 3 miles away) and some fantastic restaurants about 30 minutes south. We highly recommend Citrus and Exotica. Make sure you check out the road-side ceviche stands on the way.
3. Activities. We surfed (lessons are really close by, fairly cheap, and for all levels). We went horseback riding to a waterfall. We went zip lining at Osa. We went kayaking through a mangrove. There are all kinds of cool things to do nearby.
4. Make sure you check out Storm's bar "Jolly Roger." We ate our weight in wings there. Delicious.
Make sure you check it out!
wonderful views of the ocean!
We had a wonderful time in this beautiful villa. Waking up to views of the ocean and going to sleep with the sounds of the jungle added to the wonderful amenities of the villa. Amy and Storm were great and had fantastic recommendations and advice. We especially enjoyed the horseback ride to Nauyaca waterfall and the burger and wings at Jolly Roger. We plan on coming back very soon (and next time we won't make the mistake of renting a 2 wheel drive!)!!!
We visit every year!
This is the third year in a row that my husband and I have made our way down to Dominical, Costa Rica and we stay at the same place every year.
The villa is perfectly located within a short distance to downtown Dominical and many local beaches in the area. It is clean, quiet and relaxing. From hanging by the pool to taking a hike to the waterfall and enjoying the Costa Rican wildlife, I highly recommend it to anyone.
And make sure to visit the Bar Jolly Roger!
Amazing views, location, and comforts
I've been visiting Dominical for the past five years and this is without a doubt the best-value vacation rental I have found yet. There are other houses which may be bigger or have nicer views, but none that offer both views and amenities so close to the beach and at this price. Storm and amy were perfect hosts and more than willing to help me out with any questions I had. House was very clean, pool was refreshing, and every appliance worked fine. I will definitely be coming back!
