Left on 10/20/2012 for a stay in October 2012
My husband and I were looking for a place to get away for a while. This was great. Close enough to town to go in each day but far enough out to not have a lot of activity and noise around.
Rick kept us well supplied with wood for the fireplace. It wasn't cold enough to really need it. However, it was fun and romantic to sit in front of the fire. Mara is very helpful with ideas of places to go and things to see. -

Houston, TexasScenic and Peaceful Cottage Near Durango
Left on 10/03/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We stayed at Mara and Rick's vacation cottage for a month during august and September 2012 while we looked at real estate, wildlife, fished, played golf, hiked, walked, mountain-biked, sampled Durango cuisine, etc! Highly recommended. Charming, modern, comfortable space. Enjoyed morning sun on the front deck. Separate driveway for the cottage. Peaceful, woodsy, ~15 minutes to downtown. Mara and Rick respected our privacy and were friendly and helpful when we had questions.

We were so grateful to stay here. Our accommodations were cancelled (out of our control) less than 24 hours before our expected stay in Pagosa Springs. Mara saved the day and was wonderful to make arrangements with last minute. It worked out for the better... our stay was to scope out for future relocation in the Four Corners and the cottage is in an ideal location: close to Durango and quiet/secluded enough to feel "away". Though not the first purpose of our stay, there are tons of nearby recreation opportunities and sight-seeing. Charming, clean, and comfortable with great views (think Tree Top!) as everyone has noted in previous reviews. It snowed two days while were were there and the wood stove and plentiful bed linens kept us desert dwellers toasty. Mara and Rick were perfect hosts: they respected our privacy but were also available to answer any questions we had. We regret not talking to them more but know we will be back up there again and hope to stay at Tree Top when visiting. Thank you Mara and Rick!

My husband and I stayed here for 5 days with another couple and their 5-year old son. Everything we needed was provided: fully equipped kitchen and bathroom, plenty of linens, firewood, movies, books, you name it. The front deck had an amazing view of the mountains and the location was serene and peaceful. Mara was great to work with and made everything easy.

I was in Durango CO for a second time working a travel contract at Mercy Regional Hospital. I was fortunate enough this time, to stay, for six months at this delightful cottage in the hills about a 10 - 15 minute drive to downtown Durango. The scenary is spectacular and the peace and quiet were very relaxing. It is a spacious two bedroom cottage well decorated and comfortably furnished. A comfortable queen size bed in the main bedroom and a convertable futon couch in the 2nd bedroom. The kitchen was well stocked with basic appliances and cookware. The owners were very accomodating and friendly. Overall a womderful stay and should I be able to get another contract in Durango my hope is to be able to stay here again.

R was an ideal winter tenant. He became a master wood stove fire builder. Next season the in-floor heat will be finished.

Annapolis, MDA little slice of Colorado paradise!
Left on 09/21/2011 for a stay in August 2011
I stayed here for a much-needed respite, August 9 - 15. Mara made sure I knew exactly how to get here, and where the best health food grocery was, and even supplied olive oil -- her husband was available to give me last-minute directions when I got "turned around". As already mentioned, the bed was great, wonderful linens, peaceful and comfy interior throughout, nice to cook instead of eat out, nice bathroom, and the fabulous front porch with a beautiful view. I was lucky enough to be there the week of full moon and was mesmerized by the moon lighting up the ridge every night of my stay. It was unusually hot in Durango the week I was there, but I had no trouble with the house -- opened all the windows at night, closed them in the morning, kept it very comfortable. Can't wait to come back!

The size and cost of the cottage made it a great place for a couple to stay (though it would have been good for a family as well, or two couples traveling together). For less than most of the hotels in town, you get two bedrooms, a bathroom, living room, and a kitchen. The cottage is completely detached from the main house, so there is plenty of privacy. The view from the balcony is beautiful. The cottage was built well, with many upgrades, and it was decorated well and was clean. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.

Granbury, TxLovely guest home in wooded subdivision outside Durango
Left on 08/08/2011 for a stay in July 2011
The guest home sits up high next to the main house and has a beautiful view from the front deck. It is newly constructed and nicely appointed. There are stained concrete floors throughout. The kitchen is nice (although we didn't cook) and has stainless appliances. The 2 bedrooms are side by side and the bathroom has a double vanity. The linens are good quality and there were ample pillows and blankets. It was warm and dry while we were there and the house did get warm (even with the windows open. Fans in the bedrooms would have been nice. It was approx. 10 minutes outside Durango and we saw deer each time we drove to town. There is a slightly steep drive up to the house with steps down to the house, then back up. It might be difficult for some people, but it was fine for us. It was very quiet and peaceful there and was comfortable for our family.

Owner
We screen for the best match for our cottage because of the stairs and driveway. The ceiling fan that was broken during tapplin's stay has now been replaced and there are fans for each bedroom.July 2011 was an unusually warm week, but still cooler than most anywhere in the country, except, Maine and the NW. High quality windows open to let in the cool mountain air. We also make a swamp cooler available to guests on the rare occasion it is needed. The cottage entrance is on the opposite side as our home and is separated by a fenced yard and large driveway. It is not as close together as most single family homes in town. It's a quiet, woodsy, subdivision where all houses sit on at least 3 acres. Walking on country roads is common and very enjoyable. Because the cottage is not in town, it is quiet and many guests want to visit Mesa Verde ( 30 minutes) west, so the location is ideal to do both. Quiet, Clean, nicely appointed as well as affordable for the area are the strongest assets of this cottage.

Left on 08/08/2011 for a stay in October 2010
This vacation rental was pretty ideal. It was immaculately clean, almost brand new I think. There are very good views and a lot of things to do around the area. We went to Four Corners and Mesa Verde (about a 30 minute drive probably). We also went to the High peaks north of Durango. So, all-in-all this is a good location. I would suggest this rental to anyone who likes to get out and see a lot of different stuff, not just the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Not walkable to conveniences or food, but not a long drive either.
