Description from the manager
Memory Hill House on Orcas Island was recently built and is an exquisite reflection of the heart and creative passion of its owners. Their love of detail and the authenticity of construction will impress you from the moment you step onto the front porch.
The home snuggles into a hillside overlooking Judd Cove and East Sound, surrounded by six wooded acres dotted with sculptural Madrona trees and tall firs. It's filled with custom, locally-milled woodwork, gleaming wide plank wood floors and rubbed plaster walls. A remembrance of simpler times is triggered by an artful selection of English antiques, comfortable furnishings, and perfectly...Read more

Bonita Springs, FL, United StatesCharming with Limitations

This was a tricky review because the location is great - near Eastsound and situated nicely on a hill - EXCEPT the traffic noise makes it impossible to keep the doors or windows open at night - or truly enjoy the front balcony at times. Kitchen, dining and living rooms work very well. The two and a half bathroom claim is a bit misleading...the two baths are really one large one off the master bedroom with a pocket door between. Though both sides of the pocket have sinks and toilets, one side has a shower and the other side has the tub....difficult to really feel privacy on either side! It happened that my husband and I were the only ones in this house for 3 nights so it was not a problem. The house was built by the owner, whom we met briefly and she was very nice, but there were a couple of oddities as described above and including the strangely unfinished closets in the master bedroom. We did not have any need to check the closets in the other two bedrooms, so have no idea how those rooms do or do not work. The downstairs half bath was fine and the outdoor firepit area would be fun for a group. The washing machine was not functional it turned out, but the management was quick to appear and try to repair no avail! Overall - the kitchen, dining and living room - and fireplace - made it a worthwhile rental.

We were on Orcas for five days during our trip out to the Pacific Northwest. We are from NYC. Overall, the house was very nice and pleasant. There was, however, one issue that should be attended to.
The house is NOT situated on the water as the pictures on the website seem to imply. It is actually a good distance from the water. The house is to the LEFT of Orcas Road up a very steep driveway as you are heading into east sound. The result of this location is that you hear all all of the traffic going by on Orcas Road. The noise is very accentuated as it reverberates off of the trees and the slope of the hill. As one stands out on (or tries to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee on the deck in the morning or have a quiet dinner in the evening), you are bombarded by truck and car traffic noise. Some of which is quite loud.
This is indicative of the location. The only issue I had was that the website and the agent I spoke with in renting the house mentioned NOTHING about this fact. Had they or had the website pointed this out, we would have tried to find a more advantageously situation property. The description of the location of te house should be corrected to mention this fact as it is misleading, especially since the cost of renting the property is not cheap.Response from Vacation Doorways - 09/15/2012

We regret that you did not understand the location of Memory Hill. It has never been been implied nor represented to be a waterfront home, but rather one with a nice view over the road toward the water. The home is built on a hill above the main road leading in to Eastsound so indeed, the traffic sounds can intrude on an otherwise peaceful setting when one is outdoors, especially in the peak summer season. This has been noted by previous reviewers of the home, however, as also pointed out, the tradeoff is that Memory Hill is an exceptionally lovely home, offering a quality of furnishing not generally found in vacation entals.

Issaquah, WA, United StatesOur 1st visit to Orcas Island
Left on 08/31/2011 for a stay in August 2011
Our stay at Memory Hill House was nice as long as we kept the windows closed. The location & view was great, but unfortunately we could not enjoy it outside...there was an infestation of hornets around the house and not one screen on any of the windows!
We purchased hornet traps and placed them around house to help. Such a shame because we had perfect deck weather & with the kids, hard to keep them inside. We did notice a few other things..numerous light bulbs were out, especially on exterior, the thermostat
was erratic, and lastly...the pocket door in bathroom was broken, so we had no privacy. We enjoyed the house furniture & amenities, but will not consider staying again unless screens are installed. -

As others have commented, the one drawback is the road noise from below, but otherwise a great place to stay.

All positive, except this... The sheets on the bed in the master bedroom are really uncomfortable... not sure if they're satin or something else, but we removed them and slept on the mattress cover instead!

The sheets are silky - altho some guests find them wonderful, we're sorry they weren't to your liking. Despite this preference, we're happy that you enjoyed your stay.

Upon our arrival we were delighted to open the door to such a fabulous house. There were five of us and there was plenty of room. The furnishings and layout of the house were quite upscale, and we settled right in. The kitchen was a special delight because we all pitched in to make our meals, and we weren't cramped. The place was well stocked with linens, utensils, and anything we could want. The spices in the cabinets were a great find. We enjoyed the spacious dining room table for our evening, heavy-duty, family card games. Happy, happy time.

This house has everything you need except room service! Could use some shades in the bedrooms (bring your sleep masks), but other than that you're covered!

We held a family get-together in this house to the great satisfaction of everyone. The home is well designed, elegantly furnished and it has a supurb, well supplied kitchen. It was a delight to cook there. I cannot think of one critical comment. Perhaps one suggestion to the owners: please sharpen you kitchen knives. But that is about it.

Wonderful stay at Memory Hill House! Cozy and conveniently located to town, although wish the traffic noise from the street below was more quiet.
