    Additional Location Information

Edinburgh has been nominated as the "Best Place to Live"in the UK and, as listed in the Top 10 Travel Destinations, is recognised as one of the world's most beautiful and historic cities.

At Pilrig House, you are in the heart of the city just a 15-20 minute walk to Princes Street in Edinburgh's city centre, and all of Edinburgh's main attractions. But, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you're in the middle of the Scottish countryside.

Why? To begin with, there's the greenery. People tell us that staying in Pilrig House is like staying on a country estate. And then there's the peace. Our parkland location is wonderfully tranquil, and the House's thick stone walls ensure that any noise has a long way to go before it disturbs your relaxation.

From Pilrig House, you are also a 10-minute walk from the fashionable Shore area of Leith - Edinburgh's historic port area on the waterfront, which boasts many recommended wine bars & restaurants, including two Michelin-star restaurants - Martin Wishart's and Tom Kitchin's restaurant. It is also where The Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed.

We are also a 15-minute stroll from Edinburgh's Botanical Gardens, and a 10-minute walk from the Playhouse Theatre and a mulit-screen cinema.

We are located mins' walk from the nearest bus-stop (buses travel to the centre of town every few minutes), swim and leisure centre with Victorian swimming-pool/gym/sauna/exercise classes, cafes and restaurants, local shops, supermarket, Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Clan Tartan Centre, Ramsay Cornish's auction house, laundrette, church, Martin Wishart's Cook School (Michelin-star restaurant owner), Leith School of Art, and a wide range of other independent shops and restaurants....

With the added bonus of FREE parking (very rare for Edinburgh!), you also have the benefit of being able to take some beautiful drives in the nearby couuntryside, or even further afield - we have a specially created file for those people with cars staying longer than 3 nights - which gives great recommendations of places to visit within a 2-hour boundary of Edinburgh, and includes maps and photographs. Our AA-touring atlas also comes in handy!

Pilrig House is within walking distance of the centre of Edinburgh, yet it's completely tranquil, and both bedrooms offer leafy views of those 'brave young woods'.

      Five Stars isn't enough

Left on 07/20/2012 for a stay in June 2012

My husband and I and a friend spent 8 days in the Balfour apartment. It was by far the nicest apartment we have used in any of our travels. I would give it ten stars if I could. The attention to detail is amazing. It wasn't just the decanter of scotch, the box of chocolates, the fresh fruit, the huge collection of Dvds, and the wonderful beds that made our stay special. Our hosts, Debbie and Phillip, went out of their way to make our stay outstanding in every way. We did not rent a car and found that the local bus service and an occasional taxi was all we needed to get around town. We took the train to visit nearby towns and villages. Someday we will visit Edinburgh again, but only if we can stay at Pilrig House.

      Incredible hospitality

Left on 09/01/2011 for a stay in August 2011

This is an absolutely lovely self-catering apartment with wonderful hosts, Debbie and Phillip on site, which makes it particularly special. Each of them is friendly and helpful, and they really go above and beyond. The first nite we arrived late and hungry and Debbie called to find a restaurant that would be open to serve us, while Phillip gave us a lift there. The next day Phillip offered us a ride into town and ended up taking us on a tour of Holyrood Park and the city. He is an encyclopedia historian of his city and we enjoyed sharing his knowledge.
We stayed in the Garden apartment, which is perfectly appointed and very comfortable. For our arrival, it was stocked with milk, spring water, fruit, cookies, coffee, tea, chocolates, wine and scotch (all the essentials!) to start us off. The linens were beautiful, the hot water abundant, there is a combination washer-dryer, free wi-fi, free telephone service- really they have thought of everything. Even fresh flowers! It is just charming.
      Overall, very nearly perfect.
The one challenge we found was the location, which is completely manageable once you get acquainted with the bus, or if you allow enough time to walk into town. We did time our walk to the east end of Princes Street, and it was 27 minutes at a pretty good clip (1.4 miles according to Google maps). This is a little more than we had thought, and meant that it was not realistic to go in to town and out multiple times in one day. However, there are multiple bus lines nearby, including the 11 which is right around the corner. Taxis seem to be abundant and reasonably priced.
I would highly recommend Pilrig House- it is a lovely home away from home.

this is a little gem of an apartment about 10 min drive, 20 min walk or a quick bus trip to the Royal Mile. Edinburgh is a fantastic city - A must on any itinerary to Scotland ! Pilrig house is a home away form home- comfortable & with every little gadget you could possibly need during your stay . For example in the closet there was walking sticks & umbrellas & even a weigh scale to weight your luggage prior to air flight ! It was indeed home away form home. We had a car & the house provided an on site car park. If I was on foot I think I'd find the walk in &out; of town tedious - however a bus route is close by.Phillip was so helpful & informative he really helped us settle in & get our bearings. If you don't need to be in the center of the Royal mile then this apartment will suit- it is a gem !

Beautiful clean apartment. Debbie and Philip have thought of everything, from the robes and slippers to the crystal decanter of whisky! There is nothing bad to say about this wonderful place and we can hardly wait to return. It was a cold and rainy weekend, and the apartment was very cozy and warm. Very handy (walkable) to stores and restaurants. Owners are extremely friendly and helpful.

It was a lovely experience from start to finish. Debbie was there to meet me right when I arrived (even though I wasn't really sure what time I'd get there). The Garden apartment was so pretty, beautifully decorated, and comfortable. It was nice and quiet, and at times when I just didn't feel like doing anything I still didn't feel like I was wasting vacation time. I enjoyed sitting outside and reading in the garden, as well as sitting inside and just gazing out the window watching people in the park. I hope I can go back some time and if anyone I know ever considers a trip to Edinburgh I will think they are quite mad if they even think of staying anywhere else.

Some of the extra's included fresh roses in the bathroom to a decanter of Scotch Whiskey to paned windows overlooking a pretty garden and park beyond. We were withing walking distance to stores, pubs, restaurants and the buslines. Debbie and Philip also supplied a plethora of visitor's information for the area. All in all it was a delightful stay! We hope to return again.

We were booked in the Pilrig House garden apartment for three nights in April, but the volcanic ash cloud and related flight disruptions extended our stay to 6 nights. The apartment and the Pilrig House building and grounds were wonderful, and so were our hosts, Debbie and Philip. Debbie provided us with useful information related to our travel delays and changes of plans, and Philip gave us several rides to convenient spots, providing interesting history and conversation along the way. The apartment is nicely furnished, and has every little thing we needed for a comfortable and 'longer' stay. thank you so much Debbie and Philip.

Pilrig House sounded intriguing and the reality did
      not disappoint.
It is an interesting building historically, albeit
restored, and the owners have made it a comfortable
and welcoming base for a holiday. Being on the edge
of the park gives it a semi-rural aspect with people
and dogs all around which you can observe from your
oasis. The situation is excellent as the parking
space means you do not have to worry about parking
and it is easy to get to places of interest in
Edinburgh and out of the city too.

My friend and I stayed in the Garden Apartment of Pilrig House. This was a quiet apartment in an easily accessible and beautiful location. The apartment had everything we would ever want and all in classic style. Very near are shops, a grocery, and bus stops. We discussed our stay and were unable to think of anything we were missing. We plan on using this apartment when we return each year. I do suggest booking far in advance as this is a much sought after rental.

      Enchanting Garden Apartment in Edinburgh

Left on 03/25/2010 for a stay in March 2010

This was our first trip to Edinburgh, and we wondered why we hadn't been here before. Well, we certainly plan on coming again to the Pilrig House because it has everything anyone could possibly desire in an apartment.
Number one on the list is the warm welcome we received from both Debbie and Philip, introducing us to their fabulous city. They are always there, but never intrusive... offering assistance to places to visit, dine, or just walk.
As for the apartment... spotless, comfortable, airy with plenty of windows, beautifully decorated. Debbie has thought of everything. The kitchen has every item you need at your fingertips. There's a cabinet filled with info, maps, DVD's, restaurant brochures, and other interesting tidbits. The bedroom is extremely comfortable and welcoming after a long journey. Bathroom immaculate with pampering soaps, cream, shampoo, etc. of superior quality.
You can walk or take a bus to the center. A few restaurants a five minute walk from the apartment.
And the little extras...chocolates, cookies, tea/coffe, fruit, water, milk, fresh flowers, and a decanter of whisky. I had a "wee dram" each night, even though I don't drink, to get in the spirit. It was such a lovely touch.
We are already planning our next trip to Scotland, and of course, Pilrig House will be our first stop. Next time though, we plan on staying longer!
Thank you again Debbie and Philip for sharing your home with us.

A great experience of Scottish hospitality

Left on 01/07/2010 for a stay in December 2009

      Dear Debbie and Philip,

What a wonderful place you have there on the edge of Leith. Pilrig House is an ancient historical place combined with a modern way living. The wealth and luxury welcomes and invite you to stay.

The owners Debbie and Philip has pushed the way of Scottish hospitality to its fullest. Nothing is to much and even on a late arrival - such as ours - Philip was there to get you to a supermarket and you could buy your first needs. We have never experienced that in all these years we have come to Scotland. Even a welcomming package, wich includes champagne, whisky, complimentary chocolates and many more where at your disposal.

During our stay, we where frequently asked if we needed anything and halfway they came and cleaned our apartment, including fresh linnen and towels. never seen such a good service.

We have walked for miles and miles during the Hogmanay fest(2009/2010) and we have felt absolutely the most enjoyable comfort of this apartment. Debbie and Philip know the area quite well and know all the good places of the beaten track. Places to visit are ofcourse the Edinburgh castle, The Royal Mile, Mary Kings close, John Knox House, Gladstones Land, all the closes you come across on the Highstreet and many many more. But don't forget the new town.

Places to eat and drink are abundant and recommendable are Deacan Brodies tavern - great food -, The Kings Wark, Wighams Wine Cellar, The Worlds End to name but a few. However don't forget to visit the Albanach for a wide choice of single malt whiskies. After such endulgances it's nice to go back to the place where you stay, that's Pilrig House with all its comfort.

Although from Pilrig House is only a 15-20 minute walk to Princess street, you can allways use a taxi against discount prices or use the bus system. Guests can also get pick-up arrangements from and to the airport at fixed prices and that's is very useful as we experienced.

This place is definately worth to come back to.

On arriving at Pilrig House, we were greeted by Debbie who then showed us around the lovely garden apartment which was spotless. Debbie and Phillip were not intrusive and let us get on with our holiday and when we did see Debbie or Phillip, they asked how our holiday was going and whether we needed anything which was very good of them. In fact, one day, my wife was not well and Debbie even left a few items outside the door to make my wife's night comfortable which we really appreciated. The apartment itself was very nice and quiet. Some days we would sit and just watch the squirrels in the garden from the sitting room (lovely). As for the amenities in the apartment itself, Debbie had catered for every possible need, it had everything. The location was ideal. A very quiet area with just a few minutes walk to the bus stop. All in all, it was a home from home and would not hesitate in staying at Pilrig again. Thank you Debbie and Phillip. We thouroughly enjoyed our stay at Pilrig.

The house is located in a park where we were able to enjoy it in comfort with our 9 month old daughter. Easy access to the transit system ensured a seamless trip to downtown Edinburgh and Leith. 1) from the friendly but unintrusive greeting to the friendly but unintrusive
farewell, Debbie was the best of hosts - helpful, informative, responsive -
there when you needed her - not there when you wanted privacy ... and just
      plain friendly
      2) much thought and care has gone in to providing a warm and cozy
ambience, with all the modern conveniences travellers expect, but without
compromising the architectural heritage, integrity, or "homeliness" of the
      property
      3) location was ideal - three minutes walk to local stores, pubs, and
restaurants - setting is also beautiful, from the space and cover provided by
the well-tended garden, to the outlook from the rooms across the city to
      Arthur's Seat
      4) best = the house and the host; least = motion sensor on bathroom
extractor fan (but is there a better way?)

Thoughtful, tasteful comfort and helpful advice

Left on 06/30/2009 for a stay in June 2009

Our 5 night stay in Edinburgh at Pilrig House was the highlight of our two week vacation in the UK, especially in terms of creature comforts. The pretty Garden Apartment was impeccably clean and tastefully decorated. It was also very, very thoughtfully equipped with practically everything you could need or want, including a bag of ice, a container of milk, cookies, tea, coffee, chocolates and whiskey! The owners go out of their way to be friendly and helpful, though never intrusive. Debbie offered to take me to the store to get cereal, etc. within 5 minutes of my arrival (she was heading there anyway). Phillip drove me to the city centre the next morning (we happened to be leaving at the same time)and gave me a mini-tour of Holyrood Park. For us, big bonuses were the well-stocked bookcase and the specialized notebooks, which included lots of Edinburgh-relevant literature, two helpful videos on Edinburgh and practically every guidebook published on Edinburgh and Scotland, plus maps, brochures, and menus. Debbie's restaurant suggestions included dinner at the Shore, in Leith, which would never have occurred to us, and we ended up eating at wonderful restaurants there twice. Phillip mentioned the village of Duddingston and a exhibit at the Royal College of Surgeons that would not have otherwise occurred to us either. The location is lovely, despite a half-hour walk to the Royal Mile (lots of buses as an alternative). We would definitely stay here again on another trip to Scotland. Deserves its 4 star rating.

      Oasis Near the City

Left on 06/30/2009 for a stay in June 2009

The Pilrig House is an oasis of history, beauty and comfort adjacent to the vibrant city of Edinburgh.

Located on a park just outside of the city?s bustle, our stay was magnificent from the aspect of this property's location, modern day appointments and convenience.

Proprietors Debbie and Philip are keen at ensuring your stay is memorable. They offer and maintain an immaculate property, ensure it is well stocked with amenities and information about their lovely city and country. They make themselves available as much or as little as you require helping you to acclimate to the area quickly, identify your interests and make suggestions and recommendations to make your vacation special. They are invaluable resources.

After busy days of site seeing or shopping the Pilrig House was our home. Make sure you take the time to enjoy it?s offerings and especially watch out for your neighbors the squirrels and foxes as they scamper about the gardens in early morning or at dusk.

Our stay at Pilrig House Garden Apartment gave us the exact experience we were looking for in our Scottish vacation. We had a marvelous time in a wonderful land mainly because of the Pilrig House?s outstanding accommodations and Debbie and Philip's hospitality.

      WELL DONE!

I stayed in the garden apartment with a friend for a weekend - we were celebrating a friends birthday. The flat is thoughtfully kitted out with everything one could possibly need for a comfortable stay.

We really enjoyed the little park and the very convenient location.

I would definitely stay in Pilrig House again.

Very smooth and helpful service. Beautiful house, with lovely luxurious touches such as a fruit bowl, whisky and chocolates. Good range of DVDs and guide books / leaflets. It was also great to have internet access.
The location was ideal to be able to easily walk into the city centre and down to Leith for meals etc.
All in all a really lovely stay and would certainly return there if visiting the city again.

      Great Garden Apartment

Left on 06/09/2009 for a stay in April 2007

This apartment was fantastic! Roomy and easy to feel at home in. The view out the windows was to Pilrig Park. You would never know you were in the middle of the city - except it was so close to everything. We walked to most places but the bus was very close to catch as well. The best part was the great advise for places to see from the owners - Philip and Debbie! We went to some perfect out of the way places we would have never found on our own. I loved the little touches in the apartment from the chocolate and scented tissues to the fresh flowers in the rooms. It was truly a wonderful place to stay and we would recommend it to anyone!

We had a most enjoyable stay in the Garden Apartment at Pilrig House. The accommodation was top notch, spotlessly clean with everything you could ever need to make your stay comfortable. The owners are the nicest couple you could meet and the friendly feeling they created stayed with us all during the holiday. The apartment had the luxurious feel of a 4* hotel and I have already recommended it to friends. It has the added advantage of being only a short distance from town for sightseeing purposes. All in all, a super place to stay.

      Sublime Sanctuary within Edinburgh

Left on 06/04/2009 for a stay in April 2009

We stayed in the Garden Apartment of Pilrig house this past April-
it was perfect in every way-we felt so lucky and pampered! The
owners, Debbie and Phil, made us feel right at home (actually much
better than home) right away- they offered to even take us to sights
around the city- gave us great tips for restaruants and top ten
must-see places in Edinburgh. The attention to detail in the
apartment was amazing- everything was really perfect-the
welcome basket with fresh fruit, chocolates, beautiful linens and all
kinds of guides to the city and Scotland. Pilrig house is perfectly
situated-very convenient-15 minutes (or less) to the center of
Edinburgh-Pilrig house is a sublime sanctuary to come home to
after long days of touring-like going to the country within the city
limits- the house is located right on a lovely park, with it's own
beautiful gardens- and the house has such a vast and intersting
history itself-the owners are happy to tell you all about it. We
would without a doubt return to Pilrig House- perfect place for
either short stay- even better for extended stay- make yourself
right at home! We can't wait to go back and explore more of the city
      and surrounding area.

Left on 06/04/2009 for a stay in July 2008

We had the best time at Pilrig House and in Edinburgh. We appreciate the Martin's hospitality and the attention that was put into the smallest details to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed.

We loved the tour that Deb's husband gave us as we saw many things you would never see on a regular tour, including some spectacular estate gardens!

At Deb's encouragement, we got to know the bus system and really had a great oppotunity to rug shoulders with true Scotsman!

She left us a delicious fruit basket and delicious candy that were a plus in the morning and at the end of the day.

We were close to a convenience store when we wanted a quick ice cream.

The view into the park was sweet - ask Deb how she met her husband there. The garden that is shared with some of the owners is a delightful place to sit and read on a sunny day.

we had a wonderful time, much to the credit of our host and hostess at Pilrig House. Thank you so much!

We Were Spoiled Rotten at Pilrig House!

Left on 05/26/2009 for a stay in October 2007

If you want to truly experience Scottish hospitality stay at Pilrig House. My Aunt and I stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment looking out over the park and it was more than we expected and had everything we needed. It's much roomier than any hotel, it's quiet in a very peaceful setting, very clean, and luxuriously furnished. We loved the heated towels in the bathroom. Pilrig is even better than the pictures you see on the rental websites which is hard to believe.

The ambiance of the home and its setting, and the service from the Martins is 5 star. Clearly every attention to detail is very important to them. There were lots of personal touches that we appreciated. For example, our kitchen was stocked with staples we would need for our first meal (milk, toast). There was a fresh fruit bowl on the dining table and chocolates for our enjoyment. We so looked forward to the decanter of Scotch each evening. Our apartment had CDs, videos, books and maps for our enjoyment and use.

The Martins were available to drive us to the grocery and give us a highlight tour of the city. They are so kind and welcoming but not intrusive. Their knowledge of the history of the area was informative and entertaining. They helped us prioritize the things we wanted to see during our stay in Edinburgh so we made the best use of our time.

We arrived at Pilrig by foot from the train station which is an interesting and effortless half hour walk. The buses were easy to use and very convenient to Pilrig too.

When my Aunt and I reminisce about our trip we both comment that Pilrig was the best place we have ever stayed and we vow to return on our next UK adventure.

Don't pass up an opportunity to stay at Pilrig House.

We had a wonderful stay at Pilrig House. Even with the description on the VRBO website, we were pleasantly surprised at the size, decor, and comfort of the apartment. We found the location to be perfect: we walked across the park (backyard!) to the bus stop and easily got to all the places we wanted to visit, we walked down to the shore in the Leith District, the other direction, to some wonderful pubs and restaurants, and we enjoyed just 'staying home'. Debbie and Philip were very helpful and the apartment is stocked with tourist and general Scotland information. We would definitely return and hope to some day! Lynn and Greg

We stayed in the garden appartment and couldn't have wished for a nicer place to stay. The hospitality was fantastic and so was the appartment. The attention to detail was exemplary. It was better than a home from home. All of this within walking distance from the beautiful city centre. We will certainly be returning as we had a lovely time.

We enjoyed the country views in the center of the city. We had a warm
welcome, and were delighted with the comfortable appartment, lovely
and warm on a chilly November day. It was especially good to find
coffee, tea and milk and biscuits all waiting for us in the well equipped
kitchen, not to mention the decanter of Whisky in the sitting room.
This proved so much better than a hotel room. Highly recommended.

Our first trip to Edinburgh and we were lucky to have found Pilrig for the 3 nights we stayed. We were booked into the garden apartment and our expectations were reasonably high, given the quality of the website and the communications from the owners, Debbie and Philip, that we had received in advance. The welcome was warm and the property itself was quite striking. Once we were greeted and taken into the apartment, our expections were well and truly met. It had absolutely everything we needed - the quality was exceptional and the hosts could not have been more helpful. If we ever get back to Edinburgh, this is where we would stay.

We both had a wonderful time from being pleasantly suprised by the apartment, everything you need with lovely personel touches, to the beautiful sights and sounds of classic Edinburgh. Whilst, the surrounding area may not be Edinburghs prettiest its only a short walk to Princes Street ect. Our hosts were very nice, full of helpful advice and nothing was too much trouble. The best recomendation we can give is we will be returning to Pilrig House and in the not too distant future we hope.

My husband and I and our son and daughter-in-law rented 2 of the apartments in this wonderful home last summer. Debbie and Phillip were delightful. Phillip drove us anywhere we wanted, although it is an easy walk to to all the beautiful sights in Edinburgh. The home is situated on a large picturesque park. The Pilrig House has incredible gardens and the apartments were a good size and offered wonderful accomodations. We spent almost a month in Great Britain and the Pilrig House was definitely our loveliest stay! I give it 10 stars!
