A very centrally located, stylish, bright and arty apartment with stunning open views of Edinburgh's Old Town and Calton Hill. Newly refurbished, it has been awarded a 4 star rating by Visit Scotland and guests frequently comment on the high level of attention to detail in the facilities provided. With so many attractions just on the doorstep, its a delightful base to relax and enjoy the fantastic city of Edinburgh, any time of the year.

Loads of great restaurants & pubs nearby but if you'd like to stay "home" there's a well equipped modern kitchen (with full sized dishwasher as well as lots of cooking utensils!).

      Brilliant place to stay

Left on 02/24/2012 for a stay in February 2012

Lovely flat - excellent views, comfy furnishings, clean, light, airy. Kitchen especially thoughtfully equipped so made a short stay - 3 nights, by fly, so can't carry much - easy. Basic food shopping really close by, but big advantage is position of flat relative to main attractions, so could return in middle of day if need be.

Mary's apartment was warm, sunny, clean and perfectly located. You can walk everywhere and be back for lunch in the apartment (or you could eat at her wonderful restaurant - Always Sunday). Edinburgh was one of the friendliest cities we have ever been to and Mary personified that.

Wonderful, special apartment in the centre of Edinburgh

Left on 10/29/2011 for a stay in October 2011

I recently stayed for 3 nights in Dunbars Close with my two adult sons. The apartment is as lovely as it looks on its website. Mary had suggested ordering a delivery of groceries, which is just one of the thoughtful and helpful additions to this rental property. We arrived on a sunny late Friday afternoon, and Mary met us there, and showed us around the apartment, including the lovely kitchen, and bathroom. The kitchen is stocked with all the necessities. Although the next day was rainy, it allowed me to meet up with an old friend and welcome her to the apartment where we drank copious amounts of tea in comfort and relaxation. When we finally ventured out into the late afternoon we just crossed the road to the People's Museum - everything is so close. Since staying at Dunbars Close I have seen numerous references to it in the history of Edinburgh. The views from each of its windows was different and interesting, either in terms of grandeur, history, beauty or intrigue. I would recommend this apartment to anyone who likes to be close to the centre of a fabulous city, who appreciates lovely design and careful, considered decore, who appreciates an easy and friendly booking process. I definitely want to go back to Edinburgh and to Dunbars Close.
My tips would be to book well in advance and to have groceries delivered.

We had booked this particular accommodation because it had 2 bedrooms, and my sister in law was with us. It was perfect, Mary was there and was just so friendly and helpful, she had wonderful biscuits, a bottle of wine, milk in the fridge for us. The flat is fully stocked, hairdryer, soaps, condiments, dishes, pots, on and on. There is also a full laundry room with washer and dryer.
It is in a beautiful location, we walked and walked, and just saw so much. We were there for 7 nights, we ate dinner out only 2 of those, and just loved being there.
Oh and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud.

      my most favourite holiday rental...ever

Left on 08/10/2011 for a stay in July 2011

Finding Dunbar's Close three years ago was my greatest short break find ever. We have just returned from our fourth weekend stay and I cannot praise the apartment and our host, Mary, highly enough. After a day exploring all the treasures Edinburgh has to offer, the trek up three flights of stairs is the only downside - but you can't have such wonderful views without that! And once inside the apartment, you would be tempted never to leave it! Every time I go to Edinburgh I find some new treasure to explore - it's a city I don't think I could ever tire of and Dunbar's Close is perfectly located. Mary has thought of everything you could need - and more. This year she even laid on a Royal Wedding next door for us! it was fun to be in the flow of things for Zara Phillips' wedding, and the minister and people of the Canongate Kirk will make you feel most welcome - would highly recommend a visit if you happen to be there on a Sunday morning. And they do occasional concerts as well.

We had a very enjoyable stay. On arrival Mary was extremely helpful and welcoming. The apartment is comfortable, adequately furnished and contains all the modern appliances and technology required. Tea,coffee, milk etc was provided as well as basic kitchen and cooking items. There was a good range of very useful information, guides books etc for visitors and a selection of Dvds
as one might expect with a city centre location there was no free car parking close to the apartment although this was available a 15-20 minute walk away.

Mary the lovely owner makes sure that everything is 100% for this wonderful city apartment with everything on hand for a perfect break. From arrival to departure we and our two small boys wanted for nothing - a very welcome bottle of wine and lovely shortbreads (which lasted the first half hour!). The views are to die for and the location is perfect - right in the thick of things but very quiet - we live in a country village and thought we would struggle to sleep being on a main thoroughfair but we need not have worried. All in all a brilliant short break, even the Icelandic ash cloud didn't spoil our adventure as our plane got home with no problems. Thank you Mary and we will definitely be seeing you again!

A lovely flat with fantastic views in a great location

Left on 04/27/2011 for a stay in April 2011

I can highly recommended this flat. It is probably the nicest, most comfortable and best-equipped we've stayed in.Everything was very clean, the beds and sofas were really comfortable and the flat was very homely but stylishly decorated and furnished. The 'extras' such as loo roll, tissues, washing-up liquid, clothes detergent, dishcloths, binbags, tea and coffee, etc., were a huge help and mean that you don't have to rush out and buy all those essentials straightaway.
All of the equipment worked perfectly and it was great having the washing machine and tumble dryer as we came with a small suitcase on the train. The heating is really good, too.
The location is excellent; we were able to walk to all of the main attractions easily. The Royal Mile is surprisingly quiet and the double glazing really helped with the minor amount of traffic noise.
My email contact with Mary prior to our stay was useful - she was friendly and gave us useful information. She welcomed us herself at the flat and we were very grateful for her calm response to our text message to say that our train would be late and we feared our Sainsbury shop would be delivered to an empty flat - Mary said she would go to the flat and, if necessary, take delivery of the shopping for us.I can't praise the flat or the service Mary gave highly enough.

The only place to stay in Edinburgh...

Left on 11/28/2010 for a stay in November 2010

We stayed at Dunbars Close for 5 nights at the beginning of November...and didn't want to leave! My expectations were high after reading previous reviews, but the apartment exceeded all expectations.

From the moment I contacted Mary, she was so professional and efficient in answering my texts/emails and the booking process was effortless. I had to amend the dates of my stay, but this wasn't a problem and Mary went out of her way to accommodate us. She provided us with lots of information upon booking, which made our journey to the apartment really easy. We also ordered some groceries online from Sainsbury's thanks to Mary's recommendation.

The apartment is beautiful and furnished to a very high standard. Mary's attention to detail is impressive and I felt at home straight away. The shortbread and wine were a lovely touch and were much appreciated after a long journey. The kitchen is very well equipped and contained everything required for a comfortable stay and more.

The views of the Royal Mile and Calton Hill are stunning and you feel so close to the city, but far enough away to enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Dunbars Close and the lovely gardens. I was so content just sitting on the comfy sofa, looking out of the window!!

We visit Edinburgh 2-3 times a year and this is by far the best accommodation we have stayed in for its location, comfort and surroundings. I wont stay anywhere else now I have found this truly wonderful apartment. I would highly recommend it to all. I cant wait to return in the New Year.

From the first contact with Mary, I sensed that Dunbars close was going to be a great place to be. Mary's communication skills really came accross, on the phone and in her emails...and that she cared about our experience in Edinburgh.
The apartment was found exactly as described and perfectly formed! Beautiful layout and decor and the views astounding. Attention to detail was excellent...so our stay was relaxing, comfortable and stress free. Everything was as it was stated on the box...and everything worked well. A great location that could have been noisy but double glazing was excellent. The location couldn't have been bettered...right in the heart of the city but it seemed so quiet! Lots of restaurants close by (not actually needed because cooking facilities superb in the flat) and a short walk to buses and trains. Only down side was no where to keep luggage on the day of departure which meant for us, a struggle with our large case to the station, where we gave up with the left luggage dept because the queue was huge, leaving us to spend the last hours taking it in turns to baby sit our luggage at the station. Now home, we remember what a comfortable, fabulous place Dunbars Close was and that we hope to return next year.

Everything about this apartment was great- from the booking right through to checkout. The apartment is in a great location for exploring Edinburgh and the open top bus tours pass the door. The apartment is beautifully decorated and every little detail has been taken care of. Mary has provided so many extras that you would never expect in any self-catering property; books, Dvds, board games, wine, shortbread, tea, coffee, large umbrellas (which were very handy), loo roll, shower gel, towels, bedlinen. There's an ipod docking station, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher- all the comforts of home!
The only thing to be mindful of when booking this property would be the stair climb to the 3rd floor- would not be suitable for eldery or very young children/buggies. Otherwise faultless.

There are all the comforts you would wish in a city appartment and the decor and fittings have been chosen to add a touch of style and complement the setting. The best in Britain ?

Left on 01/18/2010 for a stay in January 2010

We(2A & 2C)stayed for 4 nights at Dunbars Close in January 2010 at the end of a 3 week trip around the UK, staying mainly in self catering flat/apartments, and travelling by train and on foot.

Dunbars Close has to be one of (if not)the best self catering flat/apartment we have ever found. Why?
      1. Everything is as described.
      2. Everthing works
      3. Little extras like the internet
      4. The wonderful style and charm of the flat.

Located toward the bottom of the Royal Mile, this location is perfect for foot exploration of Edinburgh. We only reverted to a bus for a night at the Kings theatre, although if the weather was fine, it would have been an excellent walk. Supermarkets, cornershops and cafe's abound in a very short walk.

The flat has everything you need from the internet to the laundry dryer. As bathrooms go, the bath is one of the few I can fit in and feel relaxed (at 181cm tall that is something special). The furnishings are like new and extremely clean and fresh, and the style of the flat with its art work and overall decor is wonderful.

If you are heading to Edinburgh and want to feel part of the city, but also feel at home - try to book here.

Dunbars Close is a fantastic apartment which is truly a home away from home. Every detail has been catered for your stay, by your friendly owner Mary McDonald including: a fully equiped kitchen; big comfy sofas; a sumptuous bathroom; large bedrooms; LCD TV with freeview and even an iPod docking station.
No expense has been spared on this apartment with the sort of furnishings that you would actually "want" in your own home, rather than the usual Ikea cast offs in some of the Edinburgh accommodation often seen elsewhere.
The location is ideal for anyone wanting to explore the Edinburgh's Old Town, but just far enough away from the masses at the same time to make you feel like a 'local' for your stay- lots of coffee shops and traditional great pubs nearby as well.
You're also only 2 mins walk from Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament building and the wonderful Holyrood park itself. There are great views of Carlton Hill from the living room- perfect for an early evening glass of wine, before your night out on Royal Mile...or in the case of here, a lovely night in as well!!

      Unforgettable!

Left on 08/31/2009 for a stay in May 2009

Mary's attention to detail is immediately apparent as soon as you walk through the door. The whole flat was immaculate and there were lovely small touches throughout. The view from the flat was truly breathtaking, and it was then that I realised that I was staying somewhere really special. It is a very comfortable flat, with Edinburgh right on your doorstep. The gardens are beautiful and it's wonderful to have them there to wander through at your leisure. I would not hesitate to recommend a stay at Dunbars Close, it truly was a special experience staying there. Thank you Mary!

One of best holiday lets we've had....

Left on 08/20/2009 for a stay in August 2009

This was one of the nicest holiday lets we've stayed in - anywhere. It had everything we needed plus extras. The apartment has been fitted throughout with high-end quality furniture and amenities. Being on the third floor, it gave us fantastic views on two sides - one being up the Royal Mile and one up to Calton Hill and the historic monuments that look down over Edinburgh. Plenty of reasons to just stay in sometimes and relax.

We arrived on the first day of the Edinburgh Festival after a long train journey. It was lovely to get there and be able to have a cup of tea (or glass of wine...) as these 'essentials' had been provided and were there waiting for us on our arrival along with a warm welcome from Mary, the owner, and plenty of local and up-to-date information about what was going on in and around the city at that busiest of times. Being so centrally-situated, it's also a short walk to many of the places that Edinburgh has to offer. We can strongly recommend it as a place to stay at any time.

We loved stepping out of the apartment and finding ourselves rig

Left on 08/18/2009 for a stay in September 2008

Mary was highly organised and professional, as well as being incredibly helpful and flexible with our arrangements - above and beyond expectations - both at the time of our arrival and previously when we were making our booking.
The apartment is tastefully furnished, clean, light, modern, spacious and equipped with far more than the basic necessities for cooking and comfort and pleasure. It was warm and a delight to come home to after a day out. We loved it!
It is hard (impossible?) to imagine a better location in Edinburgh's Old Town - the apartment windows look down onto the Royal Mile, out to the Canongate Tolbooth's clock and turrets and beyond to the Close's gardens and Calton Hill. It is a very short walk to Holyroodhouse and the new, unusual, Scottish Parliament, and a charming wander up hill to Edinburgh Castle.
We loved the attention to detail in the apartment and the thoughtfulness of the extras provided, especially the WIFI internet access and the detailed information about the apartment and the surrounding area. It made our first few days in Scotland a wonderful welcome and helped us fall in love with Edinburgh.
It is hard to identify anything that we liked least; the only thing that might be difficult for some people would be the stairs - but without the height you wouldn't have the views! We loved stepping out of the apartment and finding ourselves right on the Royal Mile!

We felt on top of the world!

Left on 08/15/2009 for a stay in July 2009

I was a bit dubious about city breaks having a three year old accompanying me but staying at
Dunbars Close was an amazing experience for both of us- one that makes Edinburgh really
come alive. The host Mary Macdonald could not have been more welcoming. The apartment is
delightful, with fantastic views and good for staying in and relaxing or popping in and out
due to its excellent proximity to all that Edinburgh has to offer. Right on the door step are at
least three or four attractions and nothing else is much further than a few minutes walk away.
There is a beautiful secluded, almost private garden leading off from the property excellent for
a stroll or a sit in the sun. The apartment itself more than met our expectations, immaculate,
modern, great shower, quiet and well equipped and besides the lovely feeling of light and the
tasteful contemporary design, the art work in the apartment caught my eye. We were also
fortunate to include a to visit to the cafe, 'Always Sunday' also managed by Mary Macdonald -
a similarly recommended experience. I am sure the apartment would be equally fabulous in
the middle of winter and we certainly plan on returning.

      Perfect place to stay

Left on 08/14/2009 for a stay in May 2009

Dunbars Close is the perfect place to stay. The appartment is very comfortable, modern with an 'arty' touch and surprisingly quiet for a city centre venue.
The views are exeptional and it was a shame we had to leave so soon.
We will defenately return to Mary's very special place!
