    Additional Location Information

This apartment is situated on the Canongate, on the Royal Mile, in the heart of Edinburgh's historic Old Town. The Royal Mile, the backbone of medieval Edinburgh, connects Edinburgh Castle at one end with the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Parliament at the other. Edinburgh's main visitor attractions are on your doorstep and the neighbourhood is full of attractive independent shops and restaurants, bars and cafes to suit all budgets, from cheap and cheerful pizzerias to fine dining establishments. The Hub (the official centre for the Edinburgh International Festival) and the Festival Fringe office are on the Royal Mile, and you can easily walk to many of the Festival venues. You are also ideally placed to enjoy the Christmas and Hogmanay/New Year festivities.

Bull's Close is named after Robert Bull, a writer and burgess who owned property here in the eighteenth century. The Canongate was a separate burgh from Edinburgh for over 700 years, taking its name from the canons (priests) of Holyrood Abbey. Because it neighbours the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the area developed as the court quarter and many fine residences for aristocratic families were built there. One of these, Queensberry House, now forms part of the Scottish Parliament building. Queensberry House was bought in 1686 by the father of the 2nd Duke of Queensberry, whose eldest son, the mad Lord James Douglas, escaped from confinement one night in 1701 and murdered a kitchen-boy – the very night that his father was signing the Act of Union that dissolved the Scots Parliament and put Scotland under English rule. You can find out more about Edinburgh's grisly past on the guided tours that leave from the Royal Mile. See for example Mercat Tours, Witchery Tours and Mary King's Close.

The property has a shared garden, but if that isn't enough for you, just across the road on the other side of the Royal Mile is Dunbar's Close garden, an oasis in the city centre.

Great location. Wonderfully clean and comfortable flat.
I enjoyed my time in this flat and felt safe even when the parties were going on around me.

This was my first time renting a flat and I loved every minute. I will be doing it again perhaps next winter and hope to again find Bull Close available.

Really wonderful apartment at the end of Royal Mile. It is right on the street, but given the location, we thought it would be much noisier than it was. There is a lot within one block - pubs, groceries, souvenirs - and so much more within walking distance - Edinburgh Castle, Hollyrood Park, Waverly Station, shopping district, theatres, etc. Apartment is stocked with plenty of appliances and utensils as well as a few extras (coffee, tea, milk, salt and pepper), but for cooking a real meal you will likely need to buy some basic ingredients. It is very clean (you even get brand new kitchen sponges), there is a good amount of storage and it easily feels like home, as opposed to a place that has people coming in and out year-round. Everything is easy to use, a thorough folder of instructions and tips is included, and there are even owners manuals for all appliances should you need more help and don't want to bother the owners. Absolutely will stay there again, no need to look anywhere else.

      Perfect location and wonderful flat

Left on 09/20/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We stayed at Bulls Close during our time in Edinburgh during the Fringe Festival and it was the perfect location for the venues. Very central, the only drawback of which is lots of noise from the street, and close to the station as well. The flat was very well equipped and we found everything we needed. The biggest problem was the sofa bed, which we had to use as there were 4 of us. The main bedroom bed was amazingly comfortable but the sofa bed could do with replacing as the mattress is thin and the boards are uneven. On the whole, we loved the property and would definitely go back.

Dear Amelia, Thanks for taking the time to send in comments and glad to hear that you enjoyed the location, and the fact that it's just a few minutes walk along the Royal Mile from Waverley railway station. Sorry to hear that the sofabed was uncomfortable. We also have two-bedroom apartments available for guests who prefer not to use a sofabed. Best wishes, Martin, Vacation Rentals Scotland

We stayed at the flat for 4 nights and it was really cosy and a good location. The owner were really nice to let us have a late check out as our flight was leaving late.
The apartment was nice and tidy and had everything we needed. The last day of the trip we discovered bus nr. 36 that stops if you walk down the ally at back, down to Holyrood road. Really easy access to Princes street and George Street. Walk up the Royal Mile to the Castle, walk up the Hill to arthurs Seat ( really worth the effort, just to see the view ) and enjoy the good restaurants and Pubs in the neighbourhood. Recommend you try the Whisky bar on the Mile, they have real scottish music every night at 10 o'clock

Home from Home - No Bull!

Left on 06/02/2012 for a stay in May 2012

      Mid May 2012:

On arrival, there was a lovely bottle of wine and a pint of milk in the fridge and tea, coffee & sugar and some shortbread biscuits on the counter, so we could relax instantly.

The apartment is simply furnished and very comfortable - no chintz - which always a good sign in my book. Bed is very cosy and relaxing. Kitchen is well equipped.

It was surprisingly sunny and warm in Edinburgh, so we had to turn off the heating. Couldn't work out how to do this and still have hot water, so had boiler on with heating set as low as possible so that it didn't heat up.

The apartment is at the Holyrood end of the Royal Mile and we didn't realise how close to Holyrood and Scottish Parliament it was until we walked the 100 yards or so round the corner. This is great as you're only five minutes walk from Holyrood Park and bottom of arthur's Seat while also only ten minutes walk the other way (up the Royal Mile) to the city centre.

The apartment is on the ground floor so there is street noise, though this didn't stop us from sleeping like logs and the security gate to the block is a bit noisy when other tenants let it slam, but this is nitpicking.

We had a great stay and will be back

Glad to hear that you had a good time. Yes, it's nice and close to the Palace of Holyrood House, the Scottish Parliament and the delights of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags.

You did exactly the right thing with the boiler: turning it right down means that the heating doesn't kick in but you still get hot water on demand.

      Best wishes

      Great place in great location!

Left on 09/18/2011 for a stay in September 2011

Arrived on a Sunday afternoon and found the place in great shape, all was very clean and just as advertised. The bottle of welcome wine in the fridge was greatly appreciated.

Bed was really good, the mattress not too hard or too soft, blankets fine. Kitchen very well equipped and as nice as the bathroom. Heating was very quick when needed, Wifi worked without any problem, TV is fine but could provide at least one or two international news channels for travellers from abroad.

The location directly on the Royal mile just a stone's throw from the Parliament was surprisingly quiet at night, so no problems there.

Only backdrop was the shape of the area behind the house where garbage is deposited. Booklet should contain a few more details on nearby shopping.

We really enjoyed the week there and would definitely return when in Edinburgh again.

A Terrific Little Base for Exploring Edinburgh

Left on 09/09/2011 for a stay in August 2011

We were fortunate enough to secure Bull's Close for 9 nights during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in august. It's a great place to use as a base!

The booking process couldn't be simpler. I emailed those that administer the unit, and had a very positive and informative email exchange. They arranged for us to get keys for the apartment, and we moved in! They gave us clear and simple directions to find the place.

As you enter the flat, the bedroom is on your left. It has a comfortable queen size bed, wardrobe, side tables and a dresser. The bedroom faces on to the Royal Mile - but it's far enough down the hill to be away from the noisiest sections. We had no trouble with sleep quality, even though we were there during the Fringe!

After the bedroom is the lounge/dining room - with a very comfy couch (that folds out to a double bed), one armchair, TV and a dining table. The kitchen is very well appointed, with enough pots and pans and cutlery and crockery to satisfy our needs. There is also a washing machine/drier in the kitchen, which travellers will find very handy! There is a small fridge in the kitchen (which contained a lovely bottle of wine to welcome us to Edinburgh - nice touch!!)

The bathroom is reasonably spacious, with shower over the bath, toilet and vanity unit.

As other reviews have indicated, the entrance to the unit doesn't inspire confidence - you enter from a very dark passageway, and via a cement staircase. But once you've survived this and are inside, the place is very homely.

The flat is a very short walk to Holyrood, and a longer walk up to the Castle - maybe 15 - 20 minutes? The train station is also a 15 - 20 walk away.

Thank you Martin for all your help. We had a wonderful stay, and would certainly recommend Bull's Close to friends travelling to Edinburgh.

Wonderfully kitted out apartment on the quiet end of the Royal Mile. My mother and I have been traveling around Europe for three years and this was our favourite apartment of all! The bottle of wine in the fridge was especially appreciated after a 7 hour train trip from Brussels. An unexpected, but enjoyable, bonus was the view of the Royal Wedding of Zara Philips out the front windows. Thank you Martin and everyone at Vacation Rentals Scotland for a fabulous stay.

Spacious apartment, inside is clean and well equipped. We had hoped to use the courtyard, but it was overgrown and has a nasty water leak by the adjacent trash bins. The close (alley) needs security lights replaced as well. We let the owners know, I am sure they will be able to correct. We would stay there again.

We could not have been accomodated more quickly and uncomplicatedly.
We were late for planning, and nevertheless received just the right place by the friendliest landlord.
Located right in the middle of old town, all the have-to-dos are at a footwalk´s distance (yes, even arthur´s Seat!).
The apartment is fully equipped with everything a tired wanderer will need. The bedroom windows facing the street have noise-cancellation-issue, though. The place is pretty and clean, with a nice little garden in front of the kitchen window.
As soon as the fight about the warm water in the shower is won (just keep on turning the knob!), nothing could be complained about.
      Thanks, Martin!

Awesome flat -- plenty of space for two people or a small family, and the location was perfect. Also very well kitted out, with all the sundries, utensils, glasses etc one could hope for. I especially liked the complimentary bottled of wine! One note regarding the location -- it's on the quieter end of the royal Mile, but late nights can get a trifle noisy for those sleeping in the front room (pub punters). Also, there is a light in the alcove that leads off the road to the front entrance, but the bulb was burned out -- kind of creepy late at night. Other than these minor points, it was an ideal place to spend a week in Edinburgh. This was m second time in a Vacation Rentals flat, and I would do it again in a heartbeat..

I stayed in this apartment for 2 weeks with my wife and two children( 7 & 5) from late august to Early Sept. 2010. We came for the Fringe Festival. The apartment had everything we needed to make our stay very comfortable. I particularly liked the free Wi-fi and the washing machine/dryer. Security was excellent. You can't go wrong with the location which is at Royal Mile/Canon gate.

The children slept on the sofa bed in the sitting room which was trendy.

A big plus to the Manager, Martin Mellor, who was very helpful and offered a few good tips on places of interest.

The room sizes are standard in the British way, so no worries.
