Description from the owner
Craigwell Cottage is situated a short distance (only one block away) from Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. This city centre cottage provides something a little different from apartment accommodation and is an ideal base from which to explore Edinburgh and to tour central Scotland. We provide a parking space in our private courtyard so that you can leave your car and set off on foot. We even have a shared secret garden with lovely views to the Palace and over to Holyrood Park.
The cottage is part of a former brewery built in 1822 which was sympathetically converted in 1987 to form flats, townhouses and... one semi-detached cottage which was the former gatehouse of the brewery.
The cottage overlooks the central courtyard of the complex to one side, and over gardens with views towards the Scottish Parliament buildings and over to Salisbury Crags.
Entering from the courtyard, there are two bedrooms (one double, one twin) on the ground floor along with the bathroom with over-bath shower. Upstairs is the open plan living, dining and kitchen area which is well equipped with all you'll need to self-cater - although with so many choices of restaurants and cafes in close proximity you don't need to do much cooking!
Staying in self-catering rental accommodation offers a freedom to come and go as you please, get up late - or early and suit yourself on whether you cook or eat out.
The owners of Craigwell Cottage have lived in Edinburgh for many years and are happy to recommend things to do and places to visit, and are on hand to offer advice and assistance before, during and after your stay.
By providing quality accommodation our aim is that you will want to return to explore Edinburgh and stay at our lovely cottage over and over again.

Perfect space for a family and great location
From the first email I sent Susan to the warm greeting we received when we arrived it felt like a home away from home. This cottage is in the perfect location in Edinburgh, you can walk everywhere and then wander back through the beautiful streets for some rest. We are a family of 4 with two teenagers and this accomodation worked great for us - loved the two floors so all had space to relax. It is quiet, clean, comfortable, big kitchen that is well stocked, grocery stores nearby and a beautiful garden to enjoy views of the city. Read more

Everything we needed
This cottage is so cosy and comfortable and in a perfect location. We could walk to all the city's attraction, leaving our car safely parked. If I every have the opportunity to return to Edinburgh, I won't hesitate to book again.

In one word--wonderful.
Susan provides a cottage that is one block off the Royal Mile--close but quiet. The cottage was clean and spacious enough for 4--two bedrooms and an upstairs living room/kitchen. Perfect for exploring the Royal Mile up to Edinburgh Castle as well as Princes Street. We highly recommend this cottage. Read more

Read more

We had a wonderful stay
I can't speak highly enough of this lovely little cottage. The situation is perfect - it meant that we could walk to most attractions - even didn't need a taxi home after the theatre. Very well equipped, warm and a very helpful welcome from the hosts. Easy to book. Wi-Fi was great.

great for family with a baby looking to see the sights of edinbu
Had a lovely three nights at the cottage with my husband and 11 month old daughter. Susan was very helpful in providing information before we arrived. We were very pleased with the cottage, and it was a lovely touch to find it stocked with a few basics to enable us to have a cup of tea straight away! the location of the cottage was ideal, minutes from the royal mile, a supermarket and a coffee shop. couldn't comment on the proximity to the nightlife as we were with a baby but it was ideal for us. It was really useful to have the high chair and travel cot provided also which made our stay that much easier. Read more

Glad you enjoyed your stay, and thanks for the kind comments. Hope to welcome you back to Edinburgh soon.
Extremely well located
From our initial contact, Susan was very helpful. Our arrival at the cottage was after a long drive and we felt very much at home immediately.
Every amenity was supplied and the location in relation to the Royal
Mile, Holyrood Palace etc was perfect.
Having wifi and a fully equipped kitchen also helped us feel at home. Read more

Thanks for your kind review. Hope to welcome you back again.
The cottage was very Comfortable and in easy walking distance from the Royal Mile. The arrangements for the key worked well and the administration of the cottage was good, with the owner giving advice on particular requests. We were a party of 3 and the cost was good, bearing in mind we were working to a tight budget. We liked the fact that the living area was above the bedrooms. The cobbled road outside could be noisy if cars travelled by the cottage at speed.

The best accommodation we have had on the 10 weeks we have trave
We were very lucky to be able to book this cottage on such short notice and Susan was very obliging and met us to give us the keys, organise payment and give us ideas on where to go etc. The cottage couldnt be in a better location, being in walking distance or public transport to all attractions. Add to that the free parking, free WiFi and its the best you could ask for. The cottage itself has every amenity you will need, just walk down the road for your supplies and you are set for however long you stay. Thanks Susan for such a wonderful time in Edinburgh.
Fantastic cottage in a very convenient location. Close to old part of town but a quick walk takes you to the new part! Would highly recommend to others - clean, modern and secure...fabulous time had by all. Read more

Thank you! Ideal location in city centre is one of the main reasons we chose Craigwell Cottage as a holiday home. Glad you enjoyed your stay.
Excellent service on our arrival, the owner Susan met us at the cottage and showed us around, and gave us very good advice on the surroundings. The pub she recommended served excellent food and the atmosphere was great, thanks Susan!
The cottage is very comfortable and was clean and tidy. It has all the comforts of a home and the parking available was a huge Plus especially in Edinburgh. Having Wifi internet access was great and convienent as we all travelled with our laptops.
The cottage is located the next street over from the Royal Mile and close to all the top attractions in the Edinburgh City, we walked everywhere and only used our car to visit the Royal Yacht Britannia, which was a great experience and can recommend a visit.
Thanks so much, will definately be back!...

Craigwell Cottage - a great stay
Stayed at the cottage for 4 nights. Everything went well. The cottage was nice, clean and cozy. The location to activities was great and I appreciated that it was at the end of the Royal Mile, as it was still busy but much less so than further up the road. Susan was wonderful and very helpful in orienting us to the city. Highly recommend, Read more

Thanks for your kind review.
We did have some work going on to the gas mains in the road during your visit which meant it wasn't quite as welcoming an approach to the cottage as it might have been, however, I'm sure that the delights of visiting Edinburgh in the autumn more than made up for the temporary untidiness in the near vicinity of Craigwell Cottage.
Would love to welcome you back to Edinburgh again any time you are visiting.

We loved having a home away from home in Edinburgh
We loved staying at Craigwell cottage. It is a quick walk to all the places we wanted to be. Waverly station connects you to the rest of the city and region with buses and trains. Two floors were ideal for our family of four, it gives you the opportunity to get away from each other. Also, the beds were comfortable (unlike everywhere else we stayed in Scotland, where I have to confess the beds were like rocks). The bedrooms are small, just room for the beds, but the livingroom/diningroom/kitchen area is very comfortable. All the "mod cons" were fabulous. We were a little confused about how to operate some of the more confusing items--the oven doesn't work unless the time is set, for example. But Susan provides detailed instructions (with photos!) on everything. The wireless worked like a charm, the bathroom is luxurious, and the kitchen fully equipped. The garden out back is great and I loved the big windows/doors opening out above the street. Very airy. The cars on the cobblestones are loud, but it's not a problem. We loved visiting Holyrood park, the Camera Obscura (a huge hit with our 11 year old son), and of course the castle. We also visited the Botanic Garden--easy to get to on a bus. It was one of the finest I've seen. We would definitely stay again. Susan McNaughton was very responsive to all our emails and met us at the door. The cottage has a great collection of books and Dvds too--so we had many a relaxing night at "home." Thanks for sharing your cottage. Read more

Thank you for this comprehensive review, and glad to see that our son's recommendation about his favourite place, the Camera Obscura, was a hit with your son too.
We hope to welcome you back to Craigwell Cottage again soon.
A very good place to stay
After a long two days car trip, the very central location allowed us to leave the car on the cottage parking space and to visit the city by foot.
The cottage is very comfortable with a large living space and a well equipped kitchen.
The free Wi-Fi connection is excellent and very useful.
It's not possible to open the bedroom windows at night because of the street noise. There is no solution for that, but it's livable.
We really enjoy our stay at Craigwell Cottage. Read more

Thanks so much for the review. Great to hear that the central location (and parking) meant you could be car-free for your stay here.
A special cottage; probably the best equipped accommodation that we've ever stayed in. So close to everything that matters in Edinburgh, the location could not be bettered. If you have energy, inclination and a sunny day climb arthur's Seat; the views are spectacular. Read more
Response from Susan M. - 05/09/2011
Climbing up Arthur's Seat is a favourite activity for guests at Craigwell Cottage, or you are short of time, then Calton Hill also affords great views of the city and there's a path VERTICALLY through the garden at Nether Craigwell (not for everyone...but if you're fit it's fun).
Thanks for the lovely comments about the cottage too. Hope to welcome you back soon for more family tree researching and family history visits.

wet but wonderful weekend in edinburgh
We received freindly and helpful service from Susan from the time of booking on line. She was there to greet us on arrival and gave us some info to help our weekend. The cottage is a excellent place to stay for a family or group of friends, there is everything you need to have a fantastic holiday/break in the city. Very clean and furnished to a very nice standard. Definately home from home. A delightful little cottage in an ideal location
Very comfortably and tastefully furnished by Susan and Sandy, Craigwell Cottage is in an ideal location, enabling guests to enjoy all that Edinburgh has to offer. It is less than a ten minute walk from Waverley Station and the airlink bus stop (which costs £6 return from Edinburgh airport). It is also just off the Royal Mile making it easy to pop back to rest and warm up before going out to dinner in one of the many lovely restaurants nearby.
The lay out of the cottage was ideal for us and the open plan kitchen was well equipped for self catering. We visited the Farmers' Market on Castle Terrace on Saturday morning where we bought the where-with-all for some very tasty suppers and breakfasts.
Susan is very knowledgable about the area and recommended several places to visit and enjoy. The wi-fi, provided at no extra cost, also enabled us to research and check opening times etc. as well as book restaurants.
I will certainly be recommending Craigwell Cottage to friends visiting Edinburgh. Read more

Thanks so much for this lovely review - glad to know that our fellow self-caterers enjoy a stay in our Edinburgh cottage as much as we do.
Well designed and appointed, comfortable and very clean accommodation located in the older part of Edinburgh within easy walking distance of a variety of eating establishments, near bus route and Waverley Station for those without a car. Comfortable shoes recommended for walking cobbled streets!
Thoughtful choice of 'necessities' e.g Tea, Coffee, Sugar, condiments, cleaning items, loo rolls etc., so avoiding a dash to the supermarket, though directions to the nearest would have been a useful piece of info to have in the folder.
Carlton Road is a little noisy at times for those not used to passing traffic, but does not detract from the charm of the cottage.
Instructions for using all the cottage facilities are clear and well presented.
Toys and games for children a1 condition and quality
Friendly and communicative 'hosts'. Could happily spend a month in the Cottage as a 'getaway'. Read more

Thanks for the great review. We've updated our folder with new instructions regarding local supermarkets as there is a recently opened Tesco Express in Holyrood Road in addition to Marks & Spencer Simply Food in Waverley Station, Co-op in Easter Road and Sainsbury's at Meadowbank Retal Park - so plenty of options nearby for supermarket shopping. Thanks for the useful feedback.
If anyone is looking to spend a month in the cottage, do let us know!
We'd Come Back
Our short break was very enjoyable because the position of the cottage was a short distance from Waverley station and very close to the Royal Mile and Princess St. The cottage was clean, cosy and comfortable as well as being stylish inside and out.
We are interested in history and there was plenty to enjoy. Our first outing was to the Royal Mile at night, all lit up and enchanting. We also visited Rosslyn Chapel 6 miles outside the city, remarkable and worth the effort.

Back in Edinburgh!
As a student I spent three terms at the University of Edinburgh and I love to come back from time to time. This was the first time together with the children. It was by far the best accomodation I have had, not only in Edinburgh, but in all holidays. The equipment was perfect, the reception was very friendly. But: the windows in the ground floor could not be opened, that was a bit strange. But I think it is necessary for security reasons.
Brillian weekend in Edinburgh
Susan was at the cottage ready to greet us and show us around. The apartment was perfect. It was clean and was full of all the mod cons. The cottage was perfectly situated for the centre of Edinburgh and also for the World Championship Duathlon event we were attending, held at arthurs Seat. We ate out most evenings but ate in just one night, making full use of the facilities. Even the weather was perfect!! Edinburgh is a great city and we will be visiting again in the future without a doubt! Read more

It was great to welcome a star Duathlete to the cottage. There are often different sporting or charity events in Holyrood Park at the weekends - the Moonwalk, and Edinburgh Marathon use the roads there for part of their route and there are often fun runs and other things going on there too. With Craigwell Cottage being only a short stroll away it makes it an ideal location for those participating in such events.
Sorry to see that our guest wasn't in the medal winners this time round - maybe next time!

A home in Edinburgh for the festival
My wife and I found the cottage to be everything that was advertised. We walked to most of our Festival venues. The accommodations were so complete with fully functional modern kitchen, laundry, dining area, wifi and living room that it felt like home away from home. With the help of the owner's blog we were able to immediately find nearby food shopping, local restaurants and convenience stores. A perusal of the guest book showed that those who had stayed at the Craigwell Cottage before us uniformly shared our enthusiasm. Well done, Sandcastle! Read more

Thank you so much for this lovely review - emphasising all of the things we think work so well for a holiday cottage in the city centre of Edinburgh - location, comfort, convenience and easy walking distance to most of the things you want to do on a stay in Edinburgh. It's great that we're seeing so many American visitors this summer - helped of course by direct flights to Edinburgh Airport from Newark Airport (serving New Jersey, New York and beyond).
Welcoming visitors to Edinburgh is a delight, and it's good to see the city's efforts rewarded by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine readers voting Edinburgh the 'best UK city to visit' and TripAdvisor members including Edinburgh in a poll of the top 25 favourite places to visit in the world.
location, comfort and private parking and garden.
Craigwell Cottage is possibly one of the best locations to stop in Edinburgh. We went primarily to visit the Fringe Festival and we found everything was on our doorstep but quiet enough to escape the hurly burly of the Royal Mile. It was also easy to walk to Princess Street too. As for the cottage itself, is was beautifully presented and contained everything and more for our weeks stay. We found having Wi-fI useful in order to book tickets so avoiding queues at the Fringe Office. The use of private parking was excellent as it is pretty expensive to park or find a parking spot in Edinburgh. The garden is also another asset. Susan and Sandy were really helpful and we felt they genuinely cared about our stay. We would definately go again, possibly out of season to enjoy Edinburgh at a slower pace!! Read more
Response from Susan M. - 08/18/2010
Edinburgh is a fantastic place to visit at any time of year. Of course, in August, with the range of different Festivals on offer it can seem overwhelming, but phenomenally exciting.
But at any time of year, there are delights such as visiting Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, climbing Arthur's Seat and Calton Hill - all within a short walk from Craigwell Cottage. And a local bus service takes you to Edinburgh Zoo or the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Our guests found a lovely walk along the Water of Leith Walkway between Stockbridge and the Modern Art Gallery which they said was a lovely way to escape the hustle and bustle of the Festival pace.
Glad to welcome such lovely guests back to Edinburgh at any time of year - Edinburgh's Christmas anyone?
Craigwell Cottage is just wonderful. Just 100yds off the Royal Mile the cottage is ideally situated for all the sights of Edinburgh. There is Clarinda's tea room just yards away & Jenny Ha's next door is a real local pub which we found very friendly. Three of us were in the city for the Edinburgh Moonwalk to raise money for breast cancer charities. Starting at midnight we walked the half moon (half marathon), taking in all the landmarks along the way. Susan, who owns the cottage, also walked on the night. From the day we booked the cottage Susan was simply wonderful and her help continued throughout our 4 day stay. Nothing was too much trouble & she was flexible & accommodating - always going the extra mile to ensure we got the most from our stay. The cottage itself was immaculate & well equipped to the highest standard - everything you needed was there. Light & airy, it was modern yet cosy & the garden was a climb worth making. All in all we were delighted with our choice of cottage & would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. We found this option much better than staying in a hotel & would stay at Craigwell Cottage again. I am sure Susan would afford the same high level of interest & service to all her clients, whichever of her holiday homes were being rented. Absolutely first class. Just one tip - we found having our groceries delivered via an online supermarket worked briliantly. Thank you Susan, you are a star!!

We had lots of fun welcoming this group of guests. Two couples coming from Australia, following different routes by plane and flying in from different parts of Europe and then negotiating their way by hired car to the cottage. Thank goodness for mobile phone contact en route!
Once they got to the cottage they were happy to find that it was only a few hundred yards to the nearest pub for a well deserved rest from all the travelling.
While there is a convenient parking spot right beside Craigwell Cottage, it's also easy to get here from Edinburgh Airport (via the Airport Bus to Waverley Station, or the Lothian Bus 35 to Royal Mile/Holyrood Palace) or by train to Waverley Station, making it an ideal place from which to explore Edinburgh on foot. Definitely possible to live here without a car, or perhaps just hire your car on the day of departure for your driving tour of Scotland.
Glad to know our guests had such a good time visiting friends in Edinburgh and climbing up the Scott Monument!

Great place, great value, great location!
We stayed at Craigwell Cottage for 5 days with our teens aged 17 & 19. The cottage was perfect for us. It has everything to make it a "home away from home" and to make our visit to Edinburgh great. A super week in Edinburgh
We enjoyed a super stay in Edinburgh at this lovely cottage.
This was booked at the very last minute due to the flight disruptions experienced in europe however Edinburgh and this cottage made up for any disappointments.
Located just off the royal mile it was ideal for the delights that Edinburgh has to offer, also the benefit of a designated parking place was an added bonus as we could explore slightly farther afar.
The cottage itself was ideal for us and our (almost) 3 year old daughter, especially the kids toys and books which kept Rebecca amused.
Highlights for us in Edinburgh was Dynamic Earth which is just a short walk away, plus the zoo and we also made a car journey to Rosslyn Chapel which was amazing.
The rest of the time was spent sightseeing and eating in our lovely capital city.
All in all no complaints whatsoever. Read more

We were delighted to be able to offer our guests a last minute break in Edinburgh after their flights to Paris had been cancelled twice due to the volcanic ash danger. We were also delighted that because this lovely family booked, we were able to re-schedule a holiday for some guests who had been due to arrive later in the week, but were stuck in Finland. Although it is disappointing to find that you're not going to be on holiday in a place you had been looking forward to, it's great that through the medium of on-line booking and card payments, we are able to move quickly to confirm arrangements. I think it was about 4 hours from booking to arrival, and that included travel time!
We even managed to recommend a French patisserie near by so that breakfast could have been 'almost in Paris'. Hope to be first choice for a return holiday soon!

One month at Craigwell Cottage
My wife, baby daughter and I had the pleasure to stay at Craigwell Cottage, one of the properties managed by Susan McNaughton of Sandcastle Holidays. We stayed for a whole month while I was doing research at the University of Edinburgh.
We've had several occasions for lengthy stays in Edinburgh, but this was by far our best experience. For a start, it's a detached cottage (in an old, converted brewery), which especially suited us since our wee one who can sometimes be a little disturbing to neighbours!
Apart from that convenience, it's clear why the Scottish Tourist Board awards this cottage 4 stars. The owners have given this property as much care as they would give their own home. The furniture, appliances, and decoration are all top notch. No corners cut here! It was a real pleasure to stay someplace that really felt like a home, not someone's cash cow.
The cottage's location only adds to its charm. It's probably 100 yards from the bottom end of the Royal Mile - a quick stroll from Holyrood Palace and the Parliament Buildings, for those who know Edinburgh. The living space has wisely been set upstairs, where a spectacular view of Salisbury Crags awaited us each morning.
I had been worried about city noise, but the neighbourhood is quiet and safe, and anyway the cottage opens onto an interior parking/courtyard, which is gated at night, adding a sense of security and coziness!
And, if all that isn't enough to entice you, Susan is the nicest, most gracious and engaging 'host'. She would send us occasional emails about events she thought we might be interested in (many of which we checked out...thanks, Susan!). What's more, when we had a little trouble with the washer, she dropped by to take our laundry, which she did herself at home. That's top class in my book!
I recommend this cottage and its owner without equivocation. If you love Edinburgh, as we do, do yourself a favour and book this cottage!

Sometimes when you own a holiday home you wonder if guests will see all the wonderful things which you saw when you first went there. The minute I met Darrell and his lovely family, I knew that they would. A short conversation on arrival meant that I had some clues about the things which they would like to do, and although Darrell was here to work, his wife and lovely daughter were able to get out and about and experience the joys of living right in the heart of the city. We regularly recommend to guests that they make use of the iEdinburgh application for the iPhone, which gives up to date reviews of places to visit and things to do in Edinburgh - a guide written by locals for both locals and visitors. In addition, whenever I can I let guests know about events which I hear about through emails and other sources. Knowing that I had a photographer staying, I was able to recommend the Diane Arbus exhibition at the Dean Gallery, and Darrell's interest in polar exploration meant that the current exhibition at the Queen's Gallery - literally yards from the cottage - were two of the ideas I could pass on. It's all part of the service here at Craigwell Cottage!

Unas agradables vacaciones

Great location perfect for everthing Edinburgh has to offer
We stayed in Craigwell Cottage in early December 2009. The cottage is perfectly located just off the Royal Mile and within easy walking distance of all the main attractions in Edinburgh.
The property itself is very comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay.
Parking by the door was also really helpful in central Edinburgh.
I would recommend this property. Read more

We were very happy to welcome Mark and family to stay with us in December, and are glad that they enjoyed their stay so much that they are already thinking of returning. It's a great testament when guests want to return, and we're hoping that we will have as many returning guests at Craigwell Cottage as we do at our very popular Sandcastle Cottage in Crail, Fife.

Thank you, it was lovely to welcome you and your family to Edinburgh, and we hope you'll come back soon. Glad to hear you enjoyed climbing Arthur's Seat while you were in Edinburgh.
Craigwell Cottage is very well situated and extremely clean and comfortable. I would certainly recommend it. Susan McNaughton was very kind and helpful. Thanks for helping to make our holiday so enjoyable.

It was lovely to welcome Shirley and Andrew to Craigwell Cottage, as they had stayed with us before at Sandcastle-in-The-City, our apartment which we sold in 2007 to buy Craigwell Cottage. We do hope we'll be able to welcome them back again in the future as they enjoy the Festival and the city of Edinburgh so much.
A lovely little cottage
We loved the cottage and how it was within easy walking distance from the busy attractions of Edinburgh, including the castle, as well as the quietness of countryside. It was ideal for the four of us and furnished with everything we might need. We will certainly be in touch when we re-visit Edinburgh. Read more

Thank you so much for your kind review.
Great apartment in a nice location
Our family of four stayed there for a week in early August. The apartment was very clean, and spacious enough for myself, wife, and two small kids. It was in walking distance of the major Edinburgh sites. It was also in walking distance of shopping, including grocery stores. Read more

We're so happy that people enjoy their stay at Craigwell Cottage. There is so much to do within walking distance that families can easily find plenty to enjoy and amuse for a stay of a few days or a few weeks!
Terrific cottage in the heart of Edinburgh
Terrific cottage right in the heart of Edinburgh - 1 block off the Royal Mile and about 300 yds from Hollyrood Palace. The cottage is quaint, spotlessly clean with all the modern comforts of home. Edinburgh is a great city for walking - the cottage location was close to everything. We rented a car which was great for day trips out to the country and coast (and golf); having a private parking spot was a bonus. We spent a week and would definitely come back. Read more

When we first saw Craigwell Cottage on a cold wintry day in early 2007, we could see the positives - we would be able to offer a parking space for our guests and a unique little cottage which was just perfect for a holiday location, being so close to the Royal Mile. It's been a very popular location since we first started letting in May 2007, and we hope to be welcoming guests back year after year as there's so much to do in Edinburgh that it is worth returning again and again to discover more.

Great Well-Appointed Cottage in a Central Location
We stayed here in July this year, to be close to The Gathering in Holyrood Park. The owners, Susan and Sandy, were extremely helpful in arranging access and helping us to look for Edinburgh services before our arrival (we were also getting married). Susan searched all over town for things for us, for which we were extremely grateful.
The cottage is on two levels, with living/dining/kitchen upstairs, and two bedrooms and bathroom downstairs. The upstairs is very well set up, with wireless internet in addition to all the usual requirements of dishwasher, washer/dryer, good stove and small refrigerator. The downstairs bedrooms are fairly small, with only just enough room to squeeze around a queen-size bed in one room. The other room had two single beds, giving it much more space. The bathroom was modern, but sparsely fitted out. The lack of storage in the bathroom caused us some problems while we had four people staying, but it was OK for two.
The cottage is at the entrance to an old brewery, and has one car parking space,a major benefit in this crowded city. It also had access to a common garden high on the hill above, through some steep stairs past the other apartments in the complex. The garden has views over the Edinburgh skyline, and access up to the road above, but was a bit overgrown and not pleasant to use while we were there. The wet, overcast summer weather may have contributed to this.
The cottage location at the bottom of Calton Road was ideal for accessing all of the major Edinburgh attractions. The Royal Mile was only a minute's walk away to a cafe (Clarinda's), although it was uphill to most other things. Buses, trains and shopping were easy walks.
As the cottage backs on to a busy road, we found car noise on the cobblestones outside to be the one thing we really disliked. Better sealing to the doors would improve this. More hooks and rails for wet gear were also needed.
We liked the location, friendly service and fitout, and will return here. Read more

It was fun to be able to help out our guests who were coming to celebrate not only the Homecoming Scotland event in 2009, but also to travel to their family's original heartland to celebrate their wedding.
Edinburgh was very busy during the Homecoming Weekend, and being located so close to the action in Holyrood Park was a big plus, particularly when there were so many road closures so our guests were able to walk to most things.
The bedrooms in the cottage are small, as stated, but there is a double wardrobe for storage in each of them, and we've added sliding mirror doors to the wardrobe to reflect light, and provide adequate storage as well as secondary glazing to the windows to cut down on street noise.
The cobblestones near the cottage and in the courtyard are a feature of the historic location and were designed before the advent of the modern motor car!
We are always pleased to receive helpful suggestions from guests when they find something which can be improved, and carefully weigh up comments made over the year to make improvements for our future visitors.
Fabulous location, Great accommodation
We enjoyed so much our stay at Craigwell Cottage. The
accommodations were exactly as described and even exceeded our
expectations. Susan, the owner, was more than helpful. The Wi-Fi
was a great service to communicate with our family back in the States
during our stay. The cottage location was so ideal, especially for the
Edinburgh Marathon (2 minutes from the start) which brought us to
town. But for ANY exploring of Edinburgh, this place is a must stay as
it is straddled right between the Royal Mile and Regent Road (which
becomes Princes Street), being one block from each. The on site
parking was so helpful as well because we had rented a car. We are
guaranteed to come back again and again. Read more

With so many events happening in Holyrood Park over the course of the year, having a cottage in a location which is only a few minutues walk away is a real bonus for any short stay in Edinburgh.
For those who want a great base for a touring holiday of Scotland, the close proximity to Waverley Station or the bus tours which depart from the city centre mean it's not always necessary to have a car - but if you do we offer a free parking place! What more could you need?
