Terrible stay here would not recommend this place to anyone!

Left on 04/02/2013 for a stay in March 2013

I had booked the Nook at Embleton for 3 nights as a birthday surprise for my husband. Please know I do not normally write bad reviews (I have been on Tripadviser since 2010) but felt compelled to do so on this occasion. The cottage is advertised as a cosy stone built cottage. Supposedly rated 3 stars.

We arrived in March when the weather was only 3/4 degrees during the day dropping to 0 degrees at night. The property is very old fashioned. There are 3 storage heaters and only 1 of these had been left on by the owner. No basic's such as tea, coffee and sugar sachets were available. There were no towels in kitchen or bathroom. The cooker hood was very greasy and grimy. We contacted the owner who was not available at the time. Leaving a message we went in search of a warm drink and a bite to eat.

Returning the owner appeared, handed over towels, teabags and milk and made a hasty retreat. Tired from our journey from Scotland we sat down to watch the tv. The outside temperature dropped and the inside of the house was freezing. Although we turned on the decorative fire in the lounge we found this gave out little or no heat,. We ended up watching t.v. in our jumpers and ski jackets.

On retiring we went upstairs - there was no heating on here and the bedroom was unbelievably cold. We decided the only thing to do was to wear our clothes to bed and sort things out in the morning. We switched on the 2 other storage heaters as we hoped to wake up to a warm place the next day. However, although these where starting to give out some heater the place was still cold the following day. We had had enough and packed up and went to see the owner.

The owner's only comment was that someone previously must have turned the heaters off (surely she should have checked this prior to our arrival?) and did we want to stay at the pub instead (?). We told her we did not.

As we had booked this through an agent (Sykes Cottages) we had to go through them to try to organise a refund. They contacted the owner and she was unprepared to refund anything off the cost of this nights accommodation as in her view everything was perfectly acceptable. She was adamant that we should pay what amounted to over 100 pounds (this was including the agents booking fee) to sleep in a freezing cottage.

This was so extremely disappointing and upsetting experience. I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone.

Nook Cottage has an unconventional layout with a rather steep staircase for elderley people but was warm and cosy. It was very conveniently situated near Post Office and Village Store and close to excellent eating facilities.
Very convenient for cliff top walks and interesting places nearby- the cottage was very clean and well equiped.
