Harlan East has had a complete makeover and this made our stay very comfortable. We understand that Harlan West will get this treatment later on this coming fall. Speaks well for the new owners, one of which resides there to keep an eye on things and can help out if necessary.
Plan to maybe spend a week there this fall as well.

We were happily surprised to find a place right on the beach that would allow pets, and would book a few days without requiring a full week stay. In addition, this rental has been 100% remodeled and is simply beautiful! It is very tastefully done, with high end appliances, nice bedding, and does not look at all "cheezy" like many rentals. It was also very clean (unlike many pet friendly places). We would highly recommend this rental. The house is behind the dunes, so you don't have direct beach view from the house, but you have beautiful beach views from the newly built deck just above the dunes.

Our first experience at Emeral Isle was wonderful! It is so gorgeous and serene! We stayed at Harlan East right on the beach and it was a cute quaint rental. It was myself, my husband our two daughers and our dog! We loved how our dog could be part of our vacation and be on the beach with us! He loved just laying under the umbrella watching the kids play! He also enjoyed a couple of dips in the beautiful clear ocean! My family and Iwill definately be back!

Central air was out till Thursday. One window unit on Saturday night barely cooled the living room where we all slept on the floor. (The unit was in the high 90's when we arrived and was in the upper 80's in the living room with the bedrooms closed-off.) 2nd unit delivered Sunday helped but unit wasn't comfortable until 3rd window unit arrived on Monday, but units had to be rotated off and on or the breaker tripped-off. The poor a/c stressed the frig with the high ambient temp & we had to keep most food in coolers with ice to keep our food fresh. The window unit in the living room sent hot air onto the porch rendering it unusable.
The toaster didn't work properly. The frig had a shelf broken & held together with duct tape that didn't hold. (I patched it with duct tape I had.) Some of the rocking chairs were ready to fall apart & need to be repaired/replaced.

We love Emerald Isle! We vacationed here a few years ago and love the area. We came with 7 people and stayed in a different rental for week one. We had such a great time...four of us decided to stay for an extra week. At the last minute we rented Harlan East and were highly disappointed. The pictures are highly deceptive! This property is not light and airy as the pictures show. It is much more akin to a cave. It is dark, dank, and depressing. The inside and outside are rundown and clearly uncared for. Frankly, we couldn't wait to leave...a first for a beach vacation.
While the location is oceanfront, you can't see the ocean from the house because of the dunes which only adds to the claustrophobic feel of the house. Serious rehabbing needs to be done to make this property passable.
Broken rocking chairs, rotting boards, and garbage strewn around and under the decking is absolutely unacceptable and dangerous.
Emerald Isle Realty was great...I would use them again...but we would never return to this rental.

we went off season to save money and to have some seclusion. it worked perfectly. beaches were nearly empty except for the afternoon we had dolphins playing in the surf right outside our front door, which we would have gladly had every day!
the mattresses could use some updating/upgrading, but were still sleepable, the sofa's were comfy for sitting or napping. kitchen well stocked with pots/pans/dishes.
while the floors were impressively sand-free, i was surprised at the amount of dust under the beds.
great weather, beautiful beaches, and a cute house; would definitely return. -

The location of the rental was wonderful--located right on the beach. We rented a duplex--both side. The east side was cleaned OK but the west side was a mess when we walked in. It was disappointing to see garbage all over the counters and mud in the bath tub. However, after contacting the cleaning crew the problem was solved. Emerald Isle is a great place to take a relaxing vacation. All we did was play on the beach and read. The house really could use some fixing up including a washer and dryer.

As I have said in the last review. There was no linen when we arrived after 5 O'clock. The toliet was backed up. We had to call when we arrived to have these fixed. There was no curtains on the front Kitchen and none on the back door. We had to trake the sheets and put them up at the windows for privacey. The springs on the back door were gone and the doors kept banging all night. I had to fix this also. There also was no coffee pot in the rental. By luck we caught the cleaning lady and she gave us a new one. The rental was dirty and dog hairs were eveywhere. Outside of this Emerald Isle was beautiful

I have talked with the general manager at Island Essentials and she sincerely apologizes for the linen mix up. I understand that both the linens and toilet were fixed very promptly for you! I checked our maintenance records and I don't see where you called to report any issues the week you were here. We'd like the opportunity to fix what is wrong so please give our maintenance and/or housekeeping departments a call the next time that you find your vacation home needs something. They would have been happy to put up a curtain rod for you instead of you hanging sheets, replaced the spring that broke & re-cleaned if you were not happy with the service. As in most beach homes that allow pets, some pet hair is always present. I understand that it was the craft that was broke by the previous guest and that we hadn't been back to replace it by the time you checked in that day, thankfully that housekeeper had an extra one with her. We don't want any of our guests doing handy work on vacation, we want you to enjoy the beach, after all that's why you came so please give us a call in the future, we want to help!

Loved the location so near the ocean, loved the porch and dune deck, and the matching red couches. Floors were nice, too. Problems included: Some windows did not have screens; spring on front screen door broke so had to rig shaky solution to keep the screen door closed; couple nights before leaving a big black cockroach appeared on kitchen counter (that was the only one spotted, however); no trash receptacles in any room except kitchen; rusted hooks on screen doors (one finally broke off); no curtains, blinds, or shades on front and back door or on kitchen window, therefore no sense of privacy in main part of house. The white curtains (very lovely) had tears in several rooms (but please don't replace with with anything other than more white curtains, or just mend them). Microwave suddenly quit working the morning we left. Dishwasher and washer/dryer would be nice. The service we received was excellent; we were so glad to be able to book this cottage and staff were very helpful with this. I locked myself out one night and the person who came to let me in was very nice and efficient. I lived in this cottage in the fall of 1986 (east side) and all summer of 87 (downstairs), and I loved it then and still do. It's a great place for a true lover of the beach and ocean with little need for luxury inside. Thanks, EIR.

I enjoyed the interior of the house, very clean and well kept. Unfortunately you cannot view the ocean from the front porch with the way the house is positioned. There is a small area further up to sit and watch the ocean but with a triplex it is a fight to see who gets there first.

We have rented house before and had a wonderful time. Even though this house was smaller than we nornally rent and did not have a washer and dryer being beach front made up the difference. We have never rented beach front before and it was wonderful being able to walk out on the beach.

Nicely redone inside, clean and really like the floors. Appreciate that we could bring our small dog, this is getting more rare. Beautiful stretch of beach. One of the last affordable oceanfront houses. Cons - no washer/dryer or dishwasher,which is ok for a week, but probably not longer.

We loved staying in an oceanfront property. The only thing we would have changed would be that we stay in a house next time. The neighbors in the duplex liked to drink all day and then get chatty in the evening....very uncomfortable.

The view from the duplex house to the ocean is poor, but it has a really nice deck attached. We were lucky that no one else was there the week we rented so we had the deck all to ourselves. The appliances are certainly outdated but worked. We missed not having a dishwasher. Having only 1 TV is an inconvience if you have more than one family staying. It was a great location in reference to shopping and restaurants. The beach was GREAT and quiet. We will come back to Emerald Isle, but not to this house.

We had a nice stay at the Harlan East. It was quiet and cozy. Our only concern was that the house could have used a bit more cleaning, possibly because we were the first of the season to use it, It was a bit "stale" smelling and a few rodent droppings were hanging around. It was not a huge concern for us, but just something to think about. Probably won't come back to this home...just because we want more friends to join us. We'll probably be looking for a bigger home.

My husband and I spent twelve days at Harlan East. We enjoyed it very much. It was our first vacation there. The deck was very amazing and there was a shower outside when you came back from the beach. The kitchen was not up to date.

The property management is excellent. The property is right on the beach! In the front door,out the back with fishing poles in hand. Surf fished at night for shark, had a blast. A/C didn't work the neighbors baby cried but everything else was good to go.

We spent an amazing week at Harlan East, and wouldn't have changed a thing. It's location is perfect. The house was comfortable, but you won't be spending much time inside. The deck provides a great deal of privacy and easy access to the ocean, as well as being the perfect place to hang out.
We loved Harlan East, and would recommend it to anyone!

This property was perfect for us b/c it was right on the beach, had plenty of space and allowed pets. I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a more "rustic" stay..for the amenities are not brand new, it's a lived in/homey place, but very functional and a great deal for the price.
