Our first time coming to Emerald Isle in September. Weather was great and no crowd! There was our adults and 3 children in our group and the house was more than big enough. Great walkway to the beach and everyone loved the pool and hot tub. The extra outside door to the downstairs bathroom was such a help when changing the kids out of their wet clothes. It may have been due to us visiting near the end of the season, but the house does show use. Nothing a little paint and updating can't fix. In no way when I say "show use" do I mean dirty, the house was very well kept and clean. Will be back next September!
Great family time with amazing views and beach access

We had a terrific week. While it was the end of the season and there were minor repair issues, the EI Realty staff was very responsive and we were there for family fun, not luxury resort living.
There was plenty of amenities and toys and the view and large room was stupendous. The elevator made a huge difference for us with a disabled family member and the bedrooms on multiple levels allowed us to let the teens have some freedoms.
Great family Vacation place!

We loved the house and our kids loved the pool table, pool, hot tub and being able to walk out the back door and be at the water. The house had lots of room and looked great. A few things needed repair pool sticks & TV remotes we called and the next morning they came to repair them. Computer and video games didn't work and we didn't ask for them to be repaired. The weather was great we spent most of our time outside. We would stay here again it was a great time and great house. There was lots of dishes, pots & pans, glasses, est. The service was one of the best.
needs some special attention

The best thing this house has going for it is the location. The walkway to the beach with minimal steps are a plus for those with mobility problems. The home needs some attention to make it really special. Some of the problems we encountered might have been tolerated if it was the end of the season. Let's start with the positive: pretty paint colors, comfy furniture inside, great recreation room, plenty of dishes and flatware, air-conditioning worked well, new large capacity washer and dryer, nice pool.
Not so positive: decks are in poor shape with exposed nail heads, many warped and rough boards. We had a baby with us and could not put her down to crawl around on the decks for fear of splinters or getting cut on a rusty nail head; deck furniture is in bad shape with pealing paint; bugs that look like cockroaches; no extra blankets and pillows for the trundle beds; advertised ice maker is not hooked up; dishes appeared dirty due to the hard water; half of the jets in the hot tub do not work; vines growing over the walkway to the beach, not good for folks with mobility issues; no hand bars in any of the showers or bathtubs for older folks or those with mobility issues; no where to hang towels; some of the bedrooms do not have mirrors and there were no hangers in any of the closets; very few baking dishes and plastic containers for left overs, however there are ample pots and pans; no ignitor for the grill; poor information on what to recycle; torn screens, the slider leading to the main deck off the living area was extremely hard to open and close, and the screen slider lacked a handle on the outside.
The realtor was prompt in addressing the concerns that they could. The brought us more blankets, pillows, hangers and LemyShine which helped with the dishwasher issues due to hard water. Maintenance came to trim the vines off the walkway and to spray for bugs. Realtor also offered to reimburse us for ice and an ignitor for the grill. Read more

We came with the extended family (12) for the week. We had a great time. The house is quite large that made it comfortable for the number of people here. The house is somewhat convenient for shopping and getting groceries. The beach was good, not too crowded at all. We like that aspect of coming after Labor Day. We did have issues with bugs in the house but given it was just after Hurricane Irene, it wasn't really too bad. We rewashed all the dishes that came with the house. We enjoyed the TVs, the stereos, the game boxes, the hot tub and the pool. All in all, I would recommend this property for folks looking to house a large number of people. We did meet one of the owners, he was surveying the damage from the hurricane which in reality wasn't too bad. Thanks!! Read more

Only a few appliances were acting up = Cable was out for couple days and the ice maker was not working all the time. The washing machine ruined two of my husband's ralph lauren polo shirts with rust stains I cannot get it out. The dryer never worked properly - nothing would dry. We checked the exhaust vent and it looked fine, not blocked so it is in the house somewhere blocked and could be a fire hazard.
Really need a hand sink in the kitchen area - with 20 people in the house that would be better.

The house is in desperate need of refurbishing. Do not pay for heating the pool because it barely works. The hot tub didn't work and was not repaired. Both gaming systems were broke. Not worth the price. Read more
Response from Emerald Isle Realty, Inc - 10/19/2010
Thank you for your review. I'm sorry your stay at Hawaiian Thunder left you disappointed. I see where you reported the pool heater to maintenance during your stay but the other issues, jaccuzzi tub not working and gaming systems being broken, weren't reported until check out. Certainly, we would have worked to resolve these issues.
As for the pool heat, it takes 24 hours to achieve the maximum temperature and then it will heat the water up to ten degrees warmer than the outside air temperature. My notes from maintenance indicate that the heater was locked and inaccessible, therefore not turned on until the third day of your vacation. I apologize for this setback but you were refunded for the time which the pool was not heated.
Thank you again for providing your feedback. I hope you'll choose Emerald Isle Realty when planning your next vacation.

The location is great and the house has the potential to be excellent, but since my first stay there in 2008, the property has, in my opinion, not been properly maintained. Torn screens, filthy grill, non-functioning hot tub, the clean up before we arrived was not great, the walls and ceiling in the game room were all marked up. Maintenance responded immediately when I called, but why did I need to call? However, would I rent the same property again? In a heartbeat.
We enjoyed our stay and the weather was excellent.

Yes ther were a few small issues..but Emerald Isle Realty was on them within hours. The owners even supplied us with a new Weber grill without a problem
I'm seventy fours years old (at the beach__) I invited all my grown children who haven't spent any time under one roof except for holiday dinners, and all of their teen age children...it was expensive for me, a senior, but there was no price that could be put on this. Emerald Isle Realty and owners really are to be commended..
There was enough people to make up both teams in volleyball on the beach, as well as the pool. The hot tub was clean and we realyy enjoyed it. The pool people came and cleaned the pool, but didn't interfere with the fun for more than 20 to 30 minutes. Very respectful people.
The pool table and the foose ball table as well as the air hockey was well used.
My sons appreciated the little "office" with all of it's necessites to take care of their immediate business, but none of them missed much time with the family. I've stayed at Emerald Isle 5 times before, and this was my second time with Emerald Isle Realty. They are the best... We all are planning to do this again.
This house was just lovely...lots of places to have some private time alone and read etc..if you want it.
Three thumbs up.

Check in and out was extremely quick and easy. The home was well equiped and the location and proximity to the beach couldn't have been better. A list of minor criticisms was left with the realtor at check out so hopefully these were taken care of. More problematic was a pedestal sink not attached to the wall and on the last day losing electricity along one wall of the kitchen. It wasn't a circuit breaker so it may not have been fixed before the next renters arrived. Overall we were all very pleased with the home, its amenities, and the location.

We rented Hawaiian thunder for 2 weeks in December and enjoyed it. It was a great time to rent because the beach was deserted. I loved the sound of the waves, relaxing and soothing. We had plenty of room and spent most of our time either in the kitchen or the game room. The kids were either playing or eating. The sharks in the water were interesting to watch. I was glad it wasn't swimming weather. We had plenty of room and the place was decorated nicely. The only problem I had was in the electric mixer, it only had one beater and it didn't fit into it. They all laughed at my attempt to make meringue for my pie without a mixer. Needless to say, it didn't turn out. Otherwise we had a great time and would recommend this place to rent.
But, I don't wanna go home!

Our fantastic vacation began as soon as we checked in at Emerald Isle Realty. The people were very pleasant and welcoming. When we arrived at "our home" we were pleasantly surprised. The place was clean and in good condition. The view of the ocean was superb, and access to the beach was easy. The photos of the owners and their family were a nice touch. Nice grilling area. Loved the pool and hot tub. We all enjoyed the game room, plenty to do. Would definitely stay there again.

This was the third year we stayed at Hawaiian Thunder. My husband and I take my parents and his mother to the Emerald Isle yearly as a nice gesture and for them to spend some uninterrupted time with their grandchildren. It is a special time for all.
The first year we stayed there were a few hiccups, broken TV's and playstation, minimal kitchen pans and hardly any glasses, a towel bar broken off a wall, ripped game room couches, stained rugs ect. things easy enough to forget so we rebooked.
The second year we returned to the same stains in the rugs, towel bar was not repaired, broken TVs gone and not replaced, controllers missing from playstation, couches not repaired, less glasses and filthy air vents.
We had planned not to rebook but became too busy during the year to search for a new home so we just returned to Hawaiian Thunder.
We were happy to see the vents were cleaned, the ceiling in the game room was repainted but unfortunately not much more.
We had 4 wine glasses, the kitchen cabinets were filthy and infested with ants. The kitchen refrigerator was broken(maintenance told us it needed a new electrical panel which never arrived), it barely kept things cold, it sweated so much that it left a puddle on the floor. there were dirty pots in the cabinets.
The rugs were still stained-particularly in the elevator, there was dirty and broken deck furniture and wet rugs strewn about. We cleaned up garbage in the outdoor shower and deck from the previous guests. There was a light half torn of the wall by the pool door.
The central air broke 4 times on the kitchen floor of the house. My 90 year old mother in law's bedroom was located on that floor because of handicapped accessibility and it was 85 degrees in her bedroom.
Furniture in game room still ripped and infested with ants and cockroaches.
The carpeting in the master bedroom in front of the sliding door was drenched, soaked the bottom 6 inches of the drapes and took 4 days to dry.

We have been to Emerald Isle many times. We loved the location and the roominess of Hawaiian Thunder. We were able to easily accomodate a house of 21 people. The only thing that we didn't like about the house was the dishwasher. When it was running it sounded like a helicopter was landing in the kitchen.

We enjoyed the pool and location to the beach and quiet surroundings. The home was nice but seemed a bit worn down. The carpet on the stairs was worn. The doors were hard to open and some didn't lock, fortunately they were on the upper floors.
Week at Hawaiian Thunder
Left on 05/14/2009 for a stay in May 2009 | TBourne1
We enjoyed our week at Hawaiian Thunder! This home had many great features, especially the oceanfront pool, hot tub and rec room. That was actually the main part of our decision to rent this one, after 3 prior years in Villa Mare, where the hot tub and rec room are below ground and hidden from the ocean view and even from any light getting to them!
The things we didn't like about this property was that 4 of the bedrooms didn't have closets, 4 of the bedrooms didn't have private baths, the showers were VERY small and the water basically trickled out of the shower heads due to the hard water buildup on and in them, and last, the dishwasher did not work, probably due to the buildup of hard water mineral deposits and the fact that the home needs a water softening system.
I highly recommend Emerald Isle Realty, as they do come right out whenever there is a problem reported to them. Their maintenance staff took care of any resolvable issues right away!
This home has been pretty well maintained overall and you can tell that the owners come here and enjoy it themselves, as it has a comfortable relaxed feeling to it.

The house was very nice and enjoyed the pool and game room. The hot tub was very difficult to regulate the temperature. We had issues with the airconditioner going out and we found it difficult to bare teh heat. The aircondidtioner never was fixed and we were not compensated. We had 2 handicapped family members that found it very difficult to function in the heat. There was not much communication or updates provided to us on the issue. We did have dishwasher issues that were addressed.
Access right to the beach was very convenient as well. We wenjoyed the grill also and the location of the home. Read more

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Hawaiian Thunder, and I'm happy we were able to fix the dishwasher issue for you on the same day you called us. Since the air conditioner gave us trouble only on your last two days with us, you were not there to see it fixed on your check-out day. I sincerely hope the relatively cool June weather and the fans we provided kept you reasonably comfortable for those two days.

We can't wait to go again. We had a family reunion with 17 people. There was a bed for everyone and things to do to interest everyone. The house was decorated so cutely. We couldn't get over the love the owners poured into the house. We played board games when we got tired of swimming. The house was immaculate when we arrived and the cleaning crew was waiting at the curb when we left. One son just had to watch the NBA playoffs, which he did on the big screen TV downstairs. We had a pool table and air hockey. The kitchen was set up perfectly for so many people. I loved the porches. Sometime the parents took the kids into the pool or the hot tub. Three of took pictures. The four women scrapbooked our vacation before we left for home. I brought a tiny photo printer. We loved the grill. My daughter-in-law organized the meals and made assignments for everyone. I loved leaving the window open and listening to the waves. There were plenty of things to do in town for the kids: miniature cars and a dinosaur museum. I relaxed and read a book while the gang was out. I liked the restful feeling and the fact that the house was so big, it didn't feel crowded.
