A modern and comfortable sanctuary on KI

Left on 05/12/2013 for a stay in May 2013

Wow, this is a beautiful property located on the picturesque KI. We chose 'A Dune Escape' after locating the property on Tripadvisor and the other reviewers are accurate in everything they state.

Booking: the booking and communication process was extremely prompt and easy via email with Brian and Kris. There was no ambiguity with the booking as compared with other accommodation we have tried to book in the past.

Directions: The property is easy to locate in day light, unfortunately we arrived at night and struggled with the maps (marked up Google maps) provided. We know that Brian and Kris will update this and road signage will be added like other accommodation venues.

Property: Very recently built house with quality fittings and furniture. There is a stair case to access the property and people with mobility issues should take this into consideration. The surrounding property is visually appealing with wallabies located less than a 2 minute walk from the back door.

Comfort: Well constructed and functional spaces for our party of 2 couples. We enjoyed the 4 burner Gas Mate BBQ located on the back decking and ample outdoor dining space. The kitchen area indoors is generous with a gas stove top and oven. A generous sized refrigerator and food preparation area to take advantage of the Island's offering.

The bedding was extremely comfortable with quality linen and towels provided. Kris has colour coordinated the towels and face washes for the separate bedrooms with Mercer + Reid towels, a quality and comforting touch!

A few things we noted as missing is a toaster (assumed as it is a solar powered house?), microwave (not really needed but may be an issue with a baby) and an electric kettle (gas top kettle provided, once again assumed as a solar powered house). A mirror in the second bedroom would have been useful but not a major issue as there is one provided in the bathroom and the main bedroom.

Our other note was the water pump is located on the exterior of the wall where the bed head is located. As there is no water retention tank the pump will kick in with any water usage including a tap turned on, toilet flush, etc. It meant that as soon as one person was awake, everyone was awake! Once again not a major issue but an observation.

Ki has patchy mobile phone coverage. A Dune Escape has Telstra coverage but like most of the Island there is no Optus nor Vodafone coverage.

If you are considering a Dune Escape we would strongly recommend this property and the hosts. The location is so close to Kingscote, 10 minute drive, means you have access to the supermarkets and pubs as well fuel and the freshest fish options you could imagine (Telegraph Rd next to the Caltex, Kingscote).

We will be back in the future to once again this property and hospitality.

Perfect accommodation in a perfect location

Left on 04/19/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Absolutely perfect accommodation. I have never stayed anywhere as sparkling clean as a Dune Escape. Spotless. A really well thought out holiday house with absolutely everything you need. The kitchen is really well fitted out with quality appliances and Brian and Kris have obviously thought about all the items you need in a kitchen. Comfortable lounges and extremely comfortable beds too. The house has been well designed and is light and airy and spacious.

The verandah was an amazing sun trap perfect for early morning breakfasts and afternoon drinks.

Loved the fact that the house is ecofriendly. Loved the fire too - cosy and lots of wood.

The view from the dune at the back of the house is incredible. Gorgeous sunsets. Walk down to the beach so easy (thanks to the 100 steps Brian built) and what a perfect beach! When we stayed it was picture postcard calm.

Brian is an amazing host who went out of his way to help organise a marine tour for us and even lent us wetsuits!

Our family of three is fortunate to have traveled widely overseas and in australia and we have to say that a Dune Escape is definitely one of our favourite self-catering holiday homes.

A Dune Escape is a great location to explore the beautiful North Coast. Highly recommended.

Thank you so much Megan and family, for firstly choosing A Dune Escape, secondly writing us two wonderful reviews and finally for being such wonderful appreciative guests. You really seemed to have tuned into exactly what we tried to incorporate in our beach house, environmental friendliness, nature meets the sea, a great kitchen to cook gourmet food, relaxing, quality and stylish atmosphere and an adventurous beach holiday location. We appreciate your world wide experiences - we too have travelled extensively and our house is a collection of all our favourites. Welcome back anytime!
      Warm regards

      A Dune with a View

Left on 04/09/2013 for a stay in April 2013

We wanted peace and quiet with nature at our doorstep - we were thrilled to get that and more at The Dune Escape. It was lovely to come back to the house after a day travelling around the island or playing on the beach to take in the beautiful views from the veranda and living spaces and to enjoy the sights and sounds of the wildlife. We saw an echidna, wallabies, kangaroos and even a small bat! The hosts, Brian and Kris, went out of their way to make our stay easy and comfortable, and they have put a lot of thought into making the house both very liveable and environmentally sustainable without compromising on comfort and a sense of style and luxury. We loved it!

Left on 02/03/2013 for a stay in January 2013

We were so pleased to have had the opportunity to stay at this amazing place. It was well designed, immaculately cleaned and great attention to detail in terms of everything you would need for a relaxing, private and comfortable getaway. The location is superb and we loved sitting up on the dune taking in the stunning views of the beach and surrounding landscape. Kris and Brian have a great knowledge of Kangaroo Island and are more than happy to share that with you to maximise your time there. Would very happily return there and could not recommend it enough.

Thank you Shaye and Kim - we are very happy that you enjoyed your stay and were able to find the paradise we are trying to share, especially with city dwellers like yourselves. (it's a long way from Brunswick, Melbourne - mind you another amazing place we have enjoyed visiting) We have bought 2 more relaxing chairs for the dune top now, so bring your friends with you next time and escape to nature again. Thank you so much for your very positive review, we appreciate your time! Kind regards Brian and Kris

A Dune Escape - A tranquil secluded retreat - good for the body

Left on 01/19/2013 for a stay in December 2012

I had been wanting to see Kangaroo Island for years and at last I was there - what a find - Kris and Brian were very hospitable - anything you want to know about the history of K.I., where to go and what to do while you are on K.I. - Kris and Brian have the answers and are always there if you need assistance.

"A Dune Escape" is a tranquil secluded retreat - brand new and nestled amongst nature at its best. All amenities are new and first class.

What a wonderful way to celebrate New Year's Eve - sitting on chairs on top of the Dunes, only a few metres from the house, with friends looking at the stunning views of Emu Bay, where the day before we had been walking along Emu Bay Beach watching two dolphins happily play close to shore - what a photo opportunity that was!

I recommend "A Dune Escape" on Kangaroo Island as a wonderful holiday destination - it won't be long until I will be back to see more.

Tranquil beauty with these ease of modern day living

Left on 01/16/2013 for a stay in December 2012

What a wonderful place to stay. From a very modern home you look at the roaming countryside of Kangaroo Island. Then taking a book, swimmers or a glass of wine to the top of the dune you can sit and watch the sunset, see few walkers on an empty beach and watch the ocean roll in. A truly wonderful place to holiday with countryside and surf as well as the luxury of a beautifully equipped new home . Well maintained and provided for both adults and children. Young and old.
      We will be back .

Perfect Private Escape Destination on Kangaroo Island

Left on 01/14/2013 for a stay in January 2013

The unique setting of this house and the beauty of Emu Bay makes Dune Escape a special place to stay whilst visting Kangaroo Island.
Our family of four stayed at Dune Escape for one week and loved it. Kris and Brian are great hosts and their house is beautifully designed, eco friendly and very well appointed with everything you need. The living space is very comfortable and spacious; the kitchen works extremely well and the bedrooms are generous in size. There is a great sheltered outdoor deck and BBQ area which we often used for our evening meals.
The house sits high on the inland side of the huge dunes that encircle Emu Bay. Whilst there is no view of the water from the house, the view of the surrounding landscape is magnificent with hardly another house in sight. A short climb up to the Dunes affords great views across the bay below. The lounge chairs on top of the Dunes was a great place to read as the sun rose in the mornings.
Emu Bay has crystal clear blue water and white sand stretching as far as the eye can see. It is great for swimming. We also enjoyed cycling around to the far northern point in the late afternoon. Access to Emu Bay beach is a short drive from the house. Whilst we are not used to driving on beaches, it was great to be able to drive along the sand and find the perfect spot for a swim away from the crowd - not that is was crowded by the way!

Thank you Mary and Rob for choosing and positively reviewing A Dune Escape. We are so glad you loved your experience and appreciated the eco-friendly features of our beach house. Your love of the stargazing mentioned in conversation will be added to our website, the total lack of light pollution is noted by city dwellers, something we take for granted. We hope to see you and your friends return one day. Thank you for being impeccable tenants! Brian and Kris

Thank you Kris & Brian for such a lovely relaxing stay at your beautiful Dune Escape . It is a very private, well designed house. The intimate & distant views of the landscape were gorgeous and the view of the bay after the short walk to the top of the dune is magnificent. I loved the crunchy cotton doonas, well appointed kitchen and the comfortable furniture. The kangaroos grazing nearby we're very picturesque.
