Additional Location Information

Our convenient holiday flat “Erfordia” is located on a very beautiful spot of Erfurt. From here you can reach the historic city centre of Erfurt by foot within a few minutes.
Discover Erfurt and local activities:
* Cathedral city Erfurt, located in the middle of Germany, is a very special traveling destination. Erfurt is very proud of its historic city centre, which is not only well preserved but is also among the biggest medieval city centers in Germany. Back in the Middle Ages and because of its many churches and monasteries, Erfurt was called “Thueringisches Rom”. Today, there are about 22 churches and five detached spires distributed across the historic city centre.
* At close quarters to our holiday flat, the town’s landmark is located: Erfurt cathedral and Severi church (Severikirche). Inside the gothic cathedral, in the middle tower, there is the biggest church bell of the world – 500 year old “Gloriosa”. On the other side of the cathedral mountain you will find the only, in most parts well preserved baroque citadel, called Petersberg.
* Another highlight is the oldest conserved synagogue in Europe, the “Old Synagogue” (Alte Synagoge) at Waagegasse. Not far from here, a jewish ritual bath was discovered in 2007. Follow in steps of famous reformer Martin Luther and visit the Augustinian monastery, built around 1300. You will encounter numerous wall paintings inside of the neo-Gothic town hall (built 1870-74) at fish market (Fischmarkt), telling you legends and scenes taken from the life of Martin Luther and the history of Erfurt.
* If you want to enjoy the special atmosphere of “Little Venice”, we suggest you to take a rest at the course of the river by having a drink. The guided tours, organized by Erfurt Tourist Information, are also highly recommendable. In and around the city, recreational areas and parks invite you to escape from the urban buzz of activity. First to mention is Steiger Forest (Steigerwald) on the southern edges of the city and EGA Park - located just opposite to the holiday flat. The centre of attraction at EGA Park are the Rose Garden (Rosengarten), Japanese rockery and water garden, grass- and bush gardens, tropical green houses with butterflies and the biggest playground with children barnyard in Thuringia.Outdoor leisure for the young and old!
* Discover Erfurt by bike! In the summertime, you can rely on a fully developed bicycle track network. You will certainly remember bicycle tours along rivers Werra, Ilm, Unstrut, Gera, Saale and Elster or through the Thuringian Forest.
* The Werra river valley (Werratal) or river Saale gives you the superb opportunity for canoe or boat trips. You can also enjoy the diverse scenery on a hike through the Thuringian Forest. By this means you may also want to take the ridge walk “Rennsteig”.
* A definite must see is the biggest historic city centre festival in Germany: “Krämerbrückenfest”. Major part of the festival is a medieval carnival. You can expect a vast number of performances of traditional craftsmen, medieval sword- and exhibition fights with actors disguised in historical garments and mockery in the tradition of Till Eulenspiegel as well as performances by ballad mongers, bands and musical ensembles. Local craftsmen showcase their goods in the area around Kraemerbruecke. The “Krämerbrückenfest” takes place every year on the third weekend of June.
* Every year in August “Domstufenfestspiele” takes place: the fantastic scenery of Erfurt cathedral makes a perfect setting for the drama festival and enchants every visitor who is interested in stage plays and art in general.
* The medieval Christmas market is definitely worth a visit. From Cathedral Square, fish market to central square Anger, merchants in more than 200 wooden houses offer you traditional handcrafted items and Thuringian speciality goods. Moreover, you will encounter a giant, candle decorated Christmas tree with a crib in the front and hand-carved, almost life-sized figures. For years, Erfurt Christmas market is among Germanys most popular Christmas markets.
* Immerse yourself in the glamorous charm of the Christmas season. Come and spend some relaxing days over Christmas and/or New Year’s Eve in Erfurt - many Wellness-activities are available for you convenience.
* In the south of Erfurt a great ice sports centre invites you to having a fun time. During wintertime, the Thuringian Forest turns into a fairy tale landscape, which does not only attract winter sports enthusiasts. You can expect many kilometers of superbly groomed downhill slopes and over 30 ski lifts. Whether it’s alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing or sledging – you can choose from a wide range of winter sports. In addition, you can also expect various sport events during winter like “Tour de Ski” or the biathlon World cup at Oberhof.
* Weimar – European Capital of Culture 1999 – is located only 20 km away from Erfurt. Weimar is well known for its long history of culture and art as well as for its famous artists, philosophers and musicians – Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Bach, Liszt and many others lived here.
* As another recommendation we would like to suggest a visit to “Drei Gleichen”, a castle complex, which is also only a little distance outside (20 km to the west of Erfurt). The castle complex is built up of three castles: “Burg Gleichen”, “Mühlburg” and “Veste Wachsenburg”. There is a lot to see and discover at “Drei Gleichen”. Taking a walk through the castle ruins is a fascinating and interesting experience in every season of the year.
* World famous Wartburg at Eisenach is only an estimated 35 minute car drive away from Erfurt. Elizabeth of Hungary lived here and Martin Luther translated the New Testament from Latin into German. The festival of the German student league was held here and Richard Wagner wrote his romantic opera “Tannhäuser”.
* Surrounded by tourist regions in the Thuringian Forest there are many other interesting places and towns like Meiningen with its famous theatre, Schmalkalden, along with the Renaissance castle “Wilhelmsburg”. Little town Ilmenau at “Goethewanderweg” can be visited as well as Suhl (known for its long history of gun production) and the oldest town of Thuringia, Arnstadt (puppet museum “Mon Plaisir”).
* At Saalfeld you will have the opportunity to enter a stalactite cave that is known for its colored rocks. Close to the cave, another historical building is located: Castle “Heidecksburg”.
Arrival by tram / by foot from central station Erfurt: Leave Erfurt central station through the main exit. After 80 m you find the next tram station on the left hand side. Take the tram line Nr. 4 (destination: “Bindersleben- Flughafen”) and leave the tram at tram station “Gothaer Platz”(travel time> ca. 9 minutes). Now cross “Gothaer Platz” in westward direction and stay on the right hand side. After 200 m you arrive at “Brühler Hohlweg”. Follow the street for another 100 m and you reach your travel destination. “Apartment Erfordia” is house nr. 7.
More travel info about Erfurt: As the capital city of Thuringia, Erfurt is a large city with about 500,000 residents. As Martin Luther once wrote, Erfurt "is ideally situated. There just has to be a city on a spot like this." Apparently, many others agreed with him since settlements in the Erfurt area date to 100,000 BC. The sites to visit here are almost too many to describe. One definite stop should be the Erfurt Cathedral, a 1,200-year-old church built in the international Gothic style. Luther was ordained here. Also, the Kramer Bridge is very unusual since it is covered with occupied half-timbered structures that run along both sides of the bridge. This type of bridge is unique north of the Alps. The Erfurt Synagogue is the oldest extant synagogue in Europe, having been established in the 11th century. Besides these historic structures, the old city center has numerous half-timbered buildings and is home to about 25 Gothic churches. Be sure to take the time to walk along the Michaelisstrasse, the so-called "stone chronicle of Erfurt" because of the large number of medieval buildings along it. In terms of museums, here is a short sampling: German Horticultural Museum, Thuringian Museum of Popular Art and Cultural Anthropology, Museum of Electrical Engineering, several art museums, and the memorial site of Topf and Sons Co. (which produced crematories at Auschwitz and other concentration camps). In terms of day trips, Weimar (15 miles) and Gotha (25 miles) are both reachable by short train trips.
