DAR 91 (est. 2007) is a trio of stylish, affordable and responsibly rented apartments in the ancient walled medina of Essaouira – Morocco’s most welcoming and laid-back coastal resort.

We have crafted the apartments out of an 18th century police watchtower, situated in a still-unspoilt district of the old town. Wahed (No. 1 in Moroccan) is a three-storey townhouse-style apartment with two bedrooms and a split-level roof terrace with commanding views over the medina. Zhuzh (No. 2) is a funky and colourful duplex apartment with a stunning roof terrace - the highest in our part of town. Tlata (No. 3) is a loft-style studio apartment o...verlooking the historic medina wall.

All three apartments are comfortable and quirky – exotic enough to feel a world away, but familiar enough to call home.

Our neighbourhood, Chbanat, is a part of the ancient medina famous for its textile workshops, where weavers spin their yarn and create beautiful handwoven blankets, throws and scarves on traditional looms. It is one of the most unspoilt and authentically Moroccan quarters in Essaouira.

The Dar 91 apartments are the perfect base from which to relax and absorb Morocco’s enticing and vibrant culture. You can rent them separately or in combination. Included in our prices are: daily breakfast delivery and cleaning; kitchen essentials; regular laundry and towel changes; our 'house guide' packed with info to help you plan and enjoy your stay; and the help and support of our lovely staff members Naima and Hakim, who speak Arabic, French and basic English.

Additional Location Information

Dar 91 is situated in the Chbanat district, near Bab Doukkala and Bab Marrakesh. Chbanat is a sleepy, slowly gentrifying residential quarter of the walled medina, dotted with tiny weaving, carpentry and other workshops. Life here is slow. Children play on the street and draw water from a communal fountain; there’s a public oven, a dyers’ yard and stabling for the carriage-pulling horses.

  A wonderful quirky house on a street with lots of local life. You get an experience here that you wouldn't get at a riad and this is only helped by having Naima and Hakim on hand to help you out if you need (or even completely leave you alone should you prefer) - they are very professional yet friendly too. In short you just feel right at home.
  
  The house is great value for money, kept wonderfully clean and in a great location. I can watch the world go by for hours from the balcony...everything from watching the donkey and cart bring the wood for the bakery or the 'Oni' man beeping his old car horn to let you know he's available for buying a shot of detergent / washing powder to name just a couple of the sights.
  
  The kids (girl aged 10/boy aged 7) love it too and enjoyed playing with the local children.
