Description from the owner
Dar Mellah is a beautiful one bed roomed apartment in the heart of Essaouira’s Medina. The apartment is on the first floor of a typical Jewish house built around the turn of the twentieth century, and is decorated in traditional Moroccan and Berber styles. It has a fully equipped private roof terrace with table, chairs and sun loungers and was refurbished in January 2012. The terrace is a great outdoor space that provides wonderful views of Essaouira and the surrounding mountains.

This was a great apartment and a great experience, the communication from Mike was fantastic and the help and advice from Sandra was top notch.
Essaouira was a lovely place to stay, a great warm up for Marrakesh and in all honesty a lot more enjoyable (less hassle, the same stuff in the markets, nice places to eat/drink, interesting history and hidden ally ways). Highly recommended!

Dar Mellah is a really gorgeous place, situated right in the centre of the medina, 30 seconds away from all the shops, markets, restaurants - close to amenities, but far enough to have some peace and quiet in the flat.
We were greeted by the house manager, Sandra, a super helpful and lovely lass, who had provided fruits, water, milk, tea/coffee, which was nice to have after the journey.
There is a nice kitchen if you want to cook in, and a lovely lounge area to chill out in, but of course, you want to be out and about in the restaurants, and on the beach (15 min walk away) most of the time. In the flat they have a really helpful guide book thingy, which gives you the low down on Essa and Marrakech, if you are thinking of making a trip up - definitely check this out. There is also a mobile phone in the flat with Sandras, Mikes and other numbers, should you need it.
Finally, the locals near the flat are really helpful... if you need help with anything, provided you can speak french or arabic, they sorted us out... e.g. Mustafa at the little shop in the alley. -

Dar Mellah certainly suited us as a family of four with two girls aged 21 and 18yrs. The location is right in the Medina of Essaouira which makes for a very interesting stay. The girls initially were worried about possible harassment but apart from the odd comment which tended to be quite amusing e.g. 'Chicken and Lemon, Spice Girls!' they didn't feel uncomfortable. The locals are very friendly and polite and if you're not interested in buying anything from them, you just have to be polite and say so and you are left alone.
We spent a week there and found plenty to do and see, Sandra was very friendly and helpful. We spent most of our time just walking around the Medina and we kept coming across yet another little back street that we had missed! Plenty of cafes and restaurants at extremely reasonable prices - we came home having spent well under budget but had managed to purchase many a bargain - we got quite good at bartering! We ate out for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day and had some lovely meals. We rode on camels and visited a Spa which was well worth the experience of receiving a Hamman - all four of us together! The massage was excellent (and I should know having visited Champneys regularly!) We visited a couple of hotels for two days so that the girls could sunbathe - one in Essaouira and one a 20 min taxi drive away - both were well worth the cost and we rode on Camels on the windy beach which was exhilarating and gave us all a good laugh. There were a few things which we didn't particularly feel comfortable with e.g. sometimes the street smells were particularly overpowering and unpleasant and post Ramadam newly hatched chicks are dyed in various bright colours and then sold to children as toys to play with - we were told they don't feed them but just keep them until they die - they were very popular in the Medina with the young children in the evenings. All in all we had a very enjoyable holiday. -

Staying at Dar Mellah was wonderful, the apartment is great, with everything you need and more, await you with fresh fruit and flowers and the apartment is comfortable and very nice. Communication with Mike, the owner is quick and smooth and the attention of Sandra, house manager, is perfect.
The apartment, located just steps from the food market and the souk, you will discover Essaouira so comfortable and quiet way, enjoying the city and all it offers, which is plenty.
When we return to Essaouira, certainly we will try to return to Dar Mellah enjoy!Response from Mike Garry - 09/21/2012

we had a wonderful stay in Dar Mellah. It's right in the middle of the Medina, next to the markets and a short walk from the beaches. Very comfortable, beautifully decorated in the local style - and Moroccan interiors are the best in the world. All in all - lovely country, lovely town, lovely appartment.

Dar Mellah was a gorgeously decorated apartment, with so many little touches that made us feel so comfortable; from books, scrabble, cards, to a thoughtful and extensive amount of cooking utensils; pots and pans. The flat catered to our taste so well, it was cosy, stylish (with a perfectly fitting morroccan theme) and friendly. We every room and what they had to offer. The beautiful lamps and cushions in the living space giving off a great atmosphere, and the plentiful amount of storage in the bedroom for our many clothes! We were very glad of the spare towels too when you yours easily gets covered in sand! The temperature of the flat always felt perfect; it seemed to be warm when we were chilly, and cool when we were hot.
I couldn't stop writing in the guest book I loved it that much. Essaouira is was a perfect spot to be introduced to Morocco and africa, with an amazing amount of restaurants and cafe's; the best ones all suggested by the great house notes (which we lived by). Mike and amanda's help and recommendations were wonderful, and I couldn't fault them or their apartment one bit!
