Description from the owner
A Little Something Different
When the intense summer heat and the hustle and bustle of Marrakech get too much, those in the know head two hours west to Essaouira. First ‘discovered’ in the Swinging Sixties by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones, this historic small fishing port on the Atlantic coast, with its pretty blue and white medina overlooking a seemingly endless golden beach, remains a firm favourite with actors, musicians and those who appreciate its laid back charm and relaxing ambiance.
One of Essaouira’s best kept secrets is Dar Qawi, a British owned riad, in prime location within t...he old city walls and only five minutes walk from the beach. Step over the threshold and the tinkling of an antique alabaster fountain welcomes you into this peaceful oasis which combines Arabic charm with European comfort.
The house which can accommodate up to six adults plus one child in three ensuite bedrooms plus dressing/child room is let as a whole, regardless of the number of occupants, from Euros 100 per night, depending on season, and this includes breakfast and daily maid service. It is a great base from which to explore the local world heritage site, to indulge in some of the action packed sports on offer, such as kite surfing, quad-biking, camel riding and golf or to just hang loose and chill out on the roof terrace, on the beach or in one of the many inviting cafes and restaurants in the market square. From groups of friends to romantic twosomes, every visitor will feel the magic of this riad.
We like our guests to feel comfortable so you will find best Egyptian cotton lbed clothes and good quality towels, fluffy robes, beach towels, WiFi access, plenty of radiators and blankets for rare chilly evenings, games, ipod docks, books and CDs and an English speaking concierge service. our local housekeeper is an excellent cook and can prepare you delicious meals on request.Read more

Perfect Place in Essaouira
Essaouira is amazing and this Riad was the perfect place to stay! Location was great - easy to find - which says a lot because it's easy to get lost anywhere in Morocco! The riad is a short walk from lots of shopping and cafes. Essaouira is like a mini-Marrakech and there are no cars allowed inside the gates so you enjoy the walk. There is a little store just around the corner if you need to run out for a Coke or cigs. You're not too far from the gate (Bab) either.
Felt at home as soon as we walked in. The bedrooms were all good sized - plenty of room for the 6 of us (all adults, friends and couples). Bathrooms were all updated and very nice. Kitchen was fully equipped - everything we needed. The entire house was very well taken care of - a really nice place.
The bottom floor we didn't really use, but it would be perfect for someone who wanted to read a book and have some quiet time away from the group. The roof top terrace was lovely and where we spent almost all of our time. Outside was especially nice for breakfast.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ZARA!!! I requested vegetarian tajine for our arrival dinner. My Moroccan friends who were with me laughed at my request but then were AMAZED at how wonderful it was... Zara was hired immediately on the spot for all meals the remainder of our stay - and everything was delicious! As others have commented, her couscous was great, but her tajine was to die for!
The riad manager was friendly and more than helpful. They can arrange any day trips, excursions, etc. (I recommend horseback or camel riding on the beach). The owner was easy to deal with and accommodated my changing schedule with no issue. We were extremely well taken care of the entire week. I have nothing negative to say about this place! Lovely, lovely stay and I will definitely stay again!

Relaxed luxury in beautifully traditional Moroccon riad
I can not speak highly enough of the tranquil and calm setting, wonderful decoration and attention to detail that makes all the difference to a holiday - soft towels and bathrobes, rose petal-filled fountain and perfect sun-lounging area from the roof terrace (what a view!)
Large, airy and spacious; 6 of us were more than comfortable, each bedroom with it's own ensuite and ample storage area.
Having Essaouiran Zara cooking a delicious breakfast each morning was a real treat and really added to the local feel. Her charming and English-fluent son Redoin was also fantastic with everything from recommendations, assistance and history lessons! Please note that this was optional and requested by us - otherwise we felt very private.
Not one complaint!
Couldn't have wished for a nicer setting, best holiday yet!
The house is absolutely beautiful! The roof terrace is ideal, it has a stunning view, we really enjoyed eating our meals there . The bedrooms are beautifully decorated, beds were comfy and each room has an ensuit. The house keeps Zara is lovely and made us a delicious breakfast each morning. Can't wait to come back !
Already booked again for summer!!
This is the fifth time we have rented this riad and we love it. The central location, the friendly maid, the beautiful decor and the prices less roof terrace! Essaouira is amazing; cultural, creative and enchanting and this is the place to stay!! Just rebooked for September!
My husband and I together with our twins aged four and friends plus daughter also four recently stayed at Dar Qawi. We enjoyednthenhouse immensely and all that it had to offer. It's such a comfortable and tasteful home. Although not child friendly which we were aware of, our girls were well behaved and waited at the top of the stairs to be helped down. A toilet right at the top of the house would have been perfect!! A fab stay for all, weather could have been better but didn't stop if from doing anything. We had Zara the housekeeper and cook make us a few meals which were all lovely and tasty. Downside to these, they could have been hotter but still everything was eaten!

A restful and delightful month in Dar Qawi
We really enjoyed our visit. We were beautifully looked after by Sandra, Zara and Redoin. Comfortable and cosy in the February evenings.
A great get away from the English winter!
The house is charming and we appreciated the constant hot water, good showers and bath robes.
Location very good, so near the markets, restaurants and beach front.
Essaouira is a delightful town so peaceful and relaxing
The riad was delightful and the breakfasts delicious. We'd had rather a stressful time in Marrakech (pickpocketed). Essouira was so lovely, relaxed, charming and friendly. And as for the beach...wow.

Perfect place, nice, clean, good location and helpful people
We rented the house for 10 days (for the second time), it is a perfect place (clean, spacious) to stay in the medina. You can catch the live outside the house and inside you have a wonderful hideaway from the trouble outside. Location is perfect, close to the beach. Every day you get breakfast, rooms are made and if you like you can get dinner or trips can be arranged. Wonderful place for a relaxed vacation in North africa.
Great location in a wonderful town
We went to Dar Qawi with our two teenage sons. Meeting and handover by the local agent on our arrival was brief, to the point, but efficient. The location is hard to beat - right in the heart of the Medina, very safe area, just a few minutes walk to taxis, restaurants, shops, harbour and beach. The house is three levels. Ground level is a single largish area with some seating areas; we did not use it at all, but perhaps it would be used more in winter? Second level is bedrooms and bathrooms. All bedrooms were smaller than we expected, but beds comfortable and clean. The third level has the kitchen (which was only used by Zara - the housekeeper - to make breakfast), living room (not much time spent in it) and twin level outdoor roof terrace area. The outdoor bit was fine and where we spent most of our time whilst in the house. One thing we felt it could use was some comfortable outdoor chairs with cushions to lie in and just relax (the existing sun loungers are not comfortable). We thoroughly recommend Zara's homemade pizza which she cooks at her home and brings round to you. Other than the location, the best part of our holiday was Zara's son Redouin who gave up so much of his time to make sure we enjoyed ourselves; arranged camel riding, quad-biking, took us to beach down the coast on the bus, tour of town, etc., etc.
I stayed at Dar Qawi with 5 friends and the Riad could not have been better, it was in fact perfect. It was comfortable, plenty of space for 6 girls, private and had all the mod cons that made the house very much a home from home. Zara, the house keeper made us breakfast every day which was delicious and also made us a few meals in the evening which were restaurant standard but a fraction of the price. The town itself is lovely, and you can spend your time relaxing on the beach or roof terrace of the Riad or fill your time with activities like quad biking, water sports etc. The town has lots of lovely restuarants and you can while away an afternoon looking through the local shops and galleries.
Dar Qawi is the perfect place to stay to explore Essaouira, it's within the town walls but is quiet and private but 2 minutes walk away from the waterfront.
A calm, cool oasis in the hubbub of the seaside town...
Dar Qawi is a clean, bright and welcoming house to rent in the heart of Essaouira. A traditional 'dar' tucked in a winding side street, it has everything you could possibly need, especially if you enjoy the option of self catering. (Wandering the food market 5 minutes away to find the evening meal is one of the highlights and so cheap!) However breakfast is provided on a daily basis and evening meals can be ordered from the wonderful Zahra. Tastefully decorated in Moroccan style but enjoying all the comforts of the western world, Dar Qawi offers accommodation for 6 people with 2 double bedrooms and 2 single beds in another room, each room with its own en suite. There's a hammam close by and the beach and souks are all an easy walk - one of our party is elderly, uses a walker and is limited to distance but could manage it all.( Essaouira is flat and extremely accessible.) We would definitely think of going again!
Lovely, relaxing and homely riad - great for our family
Dar Qawi although not designed for young families worked really well for us and our 3 and 1 year old. There was space for them to play which we would never have got at a hotel or shared riad. Sandra the house agent was super helpful and we loved having Zara come and cook breakfast for us every day. We also had her cook dinner nearly every evening as it was so convenient with the kids who ate her cous cous very willingly. Redoin was a joy to be around and very good at organising everything. The only minuses for people who need to stay in and look after kids in the evening was the limitation in TV channels but pre kids we wouldn't have cared! Also I'm someone who likes to read in bed so a comfy headboard or a few more pillows/ cushions would have gone down a treat as the wall is a bit unforgiving. The call to prayer is just next door and in the winter is at 6am which didn't bother us but earplugs probably a good idea for those who want a lie in!

A very relaxing, cultural and beautiful experience in this magni
Sorry for the late review! We spent a week at Dar Qawi in September this year and it was the perfect stay. We are a young couple so had ample space as the Riad can sleep 7 people comfortably. The hospitality was brilliant, we were greeted on arrival by Sandra who was extremely helpful and informative of the things we could do during our stay. Zara cooked us a wonderful breakfast every morning, at our requested time, and kept the place the spotless. She also prepared a very tasty tagine one evening from a fish we had caught ourselves during a day trip with her son Redoin. Redoin is extremely friendly and provided local knowledge on where to go and what to do. The city itself is a very chilled and gorgeous place. You can happily walk around for hours, absorbing the surroundings and tasting the local cuisine. It can suit whatever budget, with cheap food stalls, to slightly more expensive dining, there's something for everyone. The Riad is in a perfect location, a few minutes walk to all sights and activities. The interior is stunning with an authentic Moroccan feel, and the roof terrace really tops it off. We could not recommend this place more - Go ahead and see for yourselves.
We visited Dar Qawi at October half-term, staying 3 nights. My husband and I first visited Essaouira around 15 years ago and wanted to show it to our 2 children - 14 and 11. It is a truly wonderful place. The house was perfect for us - spacious and comfortable with a lovely roof terrace where we were lucky to catch some autumn sunshine. Zara and Redouin were supremely helpful. We had marvellous time.
Fabulous place !
We stayed at Dar Qawi in august during Ramadan and had a fantastic time. The place was very well located and extremely well appointed with gorgeously decorated rooms. The breakfasts were massive and Zara came every morning to freshly prepare orange juice, fruit salad pancakes, croissants, eggs and bread and preserves. Dinner was a feast with tagines and pastilla and fruit tarts - all for a small price. Her son Redoin was on hand to help direct us around the town and show us the ropes. We did camel trekking, surfing, fishing and tried the local Hamman which the girls loved. The riad was impeccably clean and well kept and having had a look in a few local riads is by far the best.
The Riad is exactly as described: a really wonderful place and in the heart of the medina. It was easy to get to with the details arranged by the very efficient Sandra.
The housekeeping service was excellent and we would recommend Zara's home cooked meals. Her son Redoin acted as our guide -We enjoyed lots of trips out during our short stay which he arranged for us. It really takes all the hassle out of it.
We would all recommend the quad biking over the dunes(amazing) and the fishing trip was vastly amusing although only I thought so as everyone apart from me and the fisherman was sea sick- including Redoin and the fisherman's son! It's not called the windy city for nothing. However we will never forget it.
The only slightly negative thing I would say and really it's just a case of packing the right clothes is that we went during Ramadan and I would advise ladies to make sure the clothing they wear cover their legs if they want to be truly comfortable walking around the Medina.
An idyllic hide-away in the beautiful town of Essaouira
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Dar Qawi, a beautiful riad, just 5-10 minutes walk away from the centre of Essaouira, within easy reach of the many shops, restaurants and the wonderful beach. The riad was beautifully decorated, with interesting "objets d'art", which gave it a homely feel. We enjoyed evening drinks on the roof terrace, although this can be a windy experience in June!
Occidental Comforts within Oriental Oppulence
Having the door to Dar Qawi opened was like coming upon the proverbial oasis after the hustle and bustle of Marakesch. While most Riads hide their treasures behind an anonymous facade the interior of Dar Qawi really is in exceptional contrast to the picturesque but also restless medina of Essaioura. One enters to a impressive reception area with a fountain in it's centre. A bathroom and small kitchen are on the the same floor. The bedrooms are arranged on the second floor around the traditional central coutyard, which runs the length of the entire building bar the sun-terrace. All the bedrooms are tastefully designed providing an authenticaly Moroccan feel but to western standards of comfort and aesthetic clarity. Especially the Mata Hari - themed master bedroom conjures up just the right amount of "oriental magic" to the nostalgic eye, without ever stooping to the tacky or derivative. Every bedroom (except the small kid's room) has its own bathroom and despite prior warnings I found water supply- and pressure somewhat superior to that of many places I have stayed in in London. Also there are no less than five loos in Dar Qawi.
The drawing room with adjacent kitchen is on level with the first terrace. It is here that Dar Qawi"s aesthetic concept is most clearly expressed: While the furnishings have a distinct local feel there is no sensual overload or clutter as you find in many Moroccan houses. There are just enough pieces to suggest oppulence without making the whole stifling. The taste is one of French exoticism - the 2 sitting room chaises are Moroccan Louis XVI.
Which leaves the spacious sun-terrace on which we spend 2 hours every morning after having been served breakfast on the lower terrace by Zara, the reliable and amiable (if you make the effort to charme her a little, which is well worth the effort) housekeeper. She also makes up the beds every morning and keeps the house pretty much spotless.
Riad to relax in
A great location within the Medina walls and very central. The Riad is lovely but the steep winding stairwells may be a little challenging for the very young or those with mobility issues. Loved the roof terraces and being able to eat outside. A few extra touches, such as a teapot rather than a kettle on the table for the breakfast cuppa, linen napkins and some mugs would be lovely.
Friendly service provided by Zara backed up by Red who was very helpful. Great to be able to dine in with a delicious home cooked meal provided by Zara. Sandra's local knowledge was great.
Enjoyed wandering the medina and buying fruit and veg as well as the more touristy things. The beach was fantastic but windy - well it's not famous for its windsurfing for nothing! All the locals we met were friendly. Lots of good places to eat within a gentle stroll.
We'd go back!
Response from kia Armstrong - 06/19/2012
Oh dear! Shocked to hear about the tea kettle on the table. There are several nice teapots of varying sizes at the riad, lots of mugs and most certainly linen napkins!! In fact, Zara normally lays the table with extra care and linen napkins are presented in locally made napkin holders which we have gone to great lengths to choose! I will immediately take these issues up with her and apologise that things were not presented as they should be. We take enormous pride in making things not just comfortable for our guests but also beautiful! This will not happen again!

Loved Dar Qawi -a wonderful introduction to Morocco and the spec
Wonderful house to stay and enjoy beautiful Essaouira. The owner sent many wonderful emails with suggestions for trips, restaurants and information on Morocco which was so helpful and made the trip special. The staff are fabulous. Zara cooked us meals on request and was so efficient in cleaning. The house was lovely with all the amenties you need. Having the upstairs patio with kitchen and sitting room was a great place to relax on return from the souks & beach and read, listen to music or sunbathe. The location is very central near the Bab Marrakesh. An easy walk to the house from the Supratours bus stop from Marrakesh. The small store next door was convenient to buy water and extra items- chocolate, washing saop, shampoo. etc.We stayed 5 days and wished it was 5 weeks.
On arrival we were met at the bus by Zara's son and he showed us all over Essaouira and the beach with such love for the area that we were enchanted with the place immediately. Our only disadvantage was not speaking French. Our advice would be to come and take adavantage of the area and the great services provided by this wonderful rental and stay as long as you can afford.
Essaouira would be a fabulous place to come with children - we commented many times how we wished we had come when my kids were young.( especially the beaches, ambiance, people, restaurants, camels , music & fish market) When we return to Morocco - in shallah (god willing) we would come directly to Essaouira. Dar Qawi made our trip memorable. If you want a relaxed entry into this amazing place book this rental.

Great Riad in a great location
The Riad is located right in the centre of the Medina, which means that you get all the atmosphere of living in a quite unique place. The Riad is suitbale for children 5+ as it has steep steps. Facilities are great and the service from the both the local manager and housekeeper are first class. The evening meals which the housekeeper prepares for a reasonable price @£12.50 for 3 are amazing. The Riad itself is a little damp but that's age and structure rather than neglect and we fixed that by having the heaters (in every room)on for a short time each night.
Essaouirs itself is a great place - it's not a typical Canary islands type Seaside place, but has an stunning beech where you can play football with the locals all day long (perfect if you have sons of any age). It has numerous lovely restaurants and felt very safe and it'e very cheap.
If you have given up the independent travelling bug to have children but now want to start again with them in tow then this is perfect place to start.
One point to note it does get prety chilly at night, take a thick jumper and don't expect to wear summer eveningwear - certainly not at this time of the year.

Peaceful haven in charming Essaouirra
We spent 3 nights at Dar Qawi, and we left wishing we could have stayed longer, we enjoyed it so much. Dar Qawi is a haven of comfort and peace in the really charming and atmospheric town of Essaouirra. We found the location perfect, - a short stroll to the beach and also very handy for all the hubbub of the souks and the restaurants.
Everything was thought of, from flowers and fruit on our arrival, to the warm and informative welcome we got from Sandra, the manager. The riad feels spacious and tranquil, tastefully decorated and very comfortable for us and our 3 girls.
Highlights for us were;
relaxing in the warm sun on the roof terrace in February
discovering the nooks and crannies of the quaint little town
eating delicious freshly grilled sardines in one of the squares
breakfast with fresh orange juice and delicious pancakes
coming back to the lovely riad after a busy afternoon shopping.
One last thing, we can heartily recommend a night in with Zahra's cooking. We had a fab chicken tagine with lemons and olives-delicious and really great value.
We will definitely be back.
Slightly concerned now that it will be so popular with our friends, we'll not get a chance to go again next year!
A fantastic family adventure!
We chose this Riad because of the excellent reviews and because of it's situation - and we were not disappointed! We planned a family break, for adults and children, to catch up with family in Morocco and to avoid the pre Xmas madness. From start to finish the support and help offered by Kia, the owner, and her excellent team in Essaouira, made the stay hassle free. Sandra, the house manager, responded to all enquiries immediately and ensured transfers, booking in and booking out all went to plan - how refreshing! The wonderful Zara prepared a lovely meal for our first night and breakfast feasts every morning; but more than that Zara really cared that we were happy and looked after. Nothing was too much trouble for Sandra or Zara.
Dar Qawi is a beautiful, peaceful and compact little haven - it is well maintained with lovely furnishings and everything you could need. It was great to have music and books, sofas, sun loungers, sun terraces, sunshine, be near to the main shopping streets, some great restaurants, the port and beach - and have the freedom to come and go as you please. I had some anxiety about taking a younger child but she loved it and would like to go for the whole Xmas period next year. What more can I say? The reviews are true!

Delightful house in a fascinating town.
House was as described with excellent facilities, including Ipod docks,TV etc; bedding towels and kitchen equipment all fine. The 'house angel'Zara was fantastic- her breakfasts and other meals were superb. The town is less busy and much more relaxing than Marrakesh. The local restaurants and Hammams etc all good.
Well organised, comfortable, welcoming and efficient
Essaouira is a delightful, relaxed and welcoming seaside town, where you can have a modestly priced holiday in very comfortable accommodation. Dar Qawi was a good experience thanks to the first class team of people who provide the back-up there: each of them does a great job, and goes any number of extra miles to ensure that everything is perfect for you. We especially appreciated the transport arrangements, the welcome, the food, and the local information provided willingly whenever we asked. Just make sure when you book that you avoid the rainy season, which sounds as if it gets very uncomfortable in the Medina, with flooded and dirty streets. The town's greatest asset, on the other hand, is its glorious beach, and busy fascinating port. Recommended!
We had a wonderful time at the Riad. The Housekeeper, Zara and her son Redouin looked after us really well and cooked us several delicious evening meals (I would recommend the fish and lamb tagine).
Goats in Trees?
It's the second time I've been to Daw Qawi and I can't recommend it highly enough, it's a magical place filled with character, the situation is fantastic! Right in the heart of Essaouira. You have a real sense that the town is surrounding you and that you're in the heart of the action. Some great memories, just wish I could've stayed there a bit longer!
One of the best trips I have had!!!
Wow! I have just returned from four incredible days in Essarouira. We travelled out there as a group of five guys and Essarouira was totally ideal for what we were after! The booking process was easy and we were supplied with notes on the property and the local area. The notes were fantastic and the various members of staff involved right from the lady (kia) who we booked with all the way through to the local staff out there who were happy to help in any way they could. Our four days consisted of sun bathing, football on the beach, quad biking through the sand dunes (Parma Quads), delicious food, exploring the local area and shops and topped of with a round of golf at an amazing golf course at the Sofitel Hotel. It made a huge difference being able to return to the riad after a day of activities and the riad had everything that we needed which even included a selection of ipod docks! We all loved the place and are already counting down the days until our next visit.
Superb alround service
I have just returned from 4 days in Dar Qawi and it was fantastic, it was like time had stood still. Superb location, lovely Riad, great service, would highly recommend it.
Beautiful house in great location
We enjoyed 4 days of peace and sunshine in Dar Qawi, after a few hectic days in Marrakech. Abiding memory is the view from the terrace of crumbling rooftops and seagulls against bright blue sky. Beautiful house in fabulous location, on quiet street right in the middle of the medina but a few hundred yards away from just about everything you'd want in Essaouira. Stylish but very comfortable (and cool) interior, the fact there's wireless in the top floor saved the entire holiday for my 14 yr old son. Zahra cooked for us every night which was great, while the owner was hugely helpful. Would recommended it to anyone.
Warm & professionell hospitality
For us staying at Essaouiras Dar Qawi began with the friendly, warm, helpful and honest answers of the owners, which gave us the feeling of someone, who cares and finding a home at windy city. We already felt welcome in this beautiful and generous house before we arrived and still do. A lot of helpful recommendations made our stay unforgettable - help, if needed, was always nearby. Zara made a wonderful breakfast and was also one the best private moroccan cooks - and being in Morocco for four month, we tasted a lot!!! The ocean side is near and the house easy to find in little Essaouira.
Thank you a lot for this hosting!!!
Stunning Riad with exceptional staff
My boyfriend and I spent four days in Riad Dar Quai in april. We were warmly welcomed by Sandra who gave us a brief overview of Essouiara, letting us in on th ebest restaurants and spots on the beach. Seeing as it was just the two of us we had trouble to decide which of the rooms to go for as all were beautiful and had ensuite bathrooms and plenty of storage. We met Zara the net morning who delighted us with a freshly cooked Moroccon breakfast on one of the terraces in the sun. Zara made us several delicious dinners during our stay, by far the best Moroccon food that I have ever eaten in my four visits to the country. Her and her son Redoin even took us on a shopping trip and then taught us how to make a traditional tagine. The city and the people of Essouaira are far more relaxed than Marrakesh and you feel like you can do your own thing without being hassled. On the nights when we did tear ourselves away from Zara's cooking we found really great restaurants such as The Patio and also ate lentils with flatbread down a side street full of small cafe's that cost just 10dhr but were delicious. In all the stay in Dar Quai was a relaxing and enjoyable way to end our holiday. We will certainly be coming back with friends next time.

A great vacation in very good accommodations
We stayed at Dar Qawi for two weeks, the last week of which was with our three adult sons. The house is very attractive and serviceable. Above all, it is very clean.
Every day, Zarah provides breakfast; while we ate, she made beds and cleaned. Her son, 19-year old Redoin, was available if we needed directions, ideas for restaurants, or shopping and negotiating with local merchants.
Several times, we hired Zarah to make our evening meal -- delicious! We soon discovered her strawberry tarte, a wonderful treat.
The layout of the house allows five adults to stay there with privacy and comfort -- three ensuite bathrooms and two additional two piece bathrooms mean no morning line-ups.
We would cheerfully return to Dar Qawi -- the price is reasonable for the accommodations and the neighbourhood is convenient. From Sandra's friendly greeting to Zarah and Redoin's cheerful help, we agreed that our vacation was ideal.
A definite a+.
Wonderful Riad in Lovely Location
We spent three nights at Dar Qawi with our three children. Having read the reviews on Trip advisor, we were thrilled to discover our expectations exceeded. The Riad is very spacious, and very clean. It is extremely good value for the money: three bedrooms each have en suite bathrooms, there is a large living room downstairs with fountain with lots of books to read, and an upstairs living/dining room with TV and loads of Dvds and music. Although there is no view from the roof top terrace, the sound of surf in the background is very pleasant, and the terrace is a nice place to relax.
We were particularly grateful for the service: we were met at the main medina gate by the person who oversees the Riad for the owners - she was very patient in terms of adjusting her schedule to meet our arrival time. And she provided all the information we needed. At the Riad we benefitted from the delicious and large breakfasts provided by Zahra each morning, and one evening from the couscous and brochette dinner she prepared at our request. Each day she cleaned the rooms and made the beds as well. The owner of the riad also was in contact with us by email prior to our visit and was very helpful.
The Riad really is just 5 minutes walk from all the interesting places/shops in the medina and from the great beaches.
We have no reservations about recommending this highly
Relaxing stay at a charming house in an authentic moroccan town
I just wanted to say a huge thankyou for lending your house to us all last week. The house is authentic, stunning and inspiring, and we all felt so relaxed and comfortable. Your help and advice made everything so easy and enjoyable.
Essouira was beautiful, i loved it there. We wandered around the bustling markets, watched the local fishermen and spent time on the beautiful beach.
We also ate at Ocean Vagabond and Salvatores. Thankyou for the perfect recommendations!
Thankyou again for your huge generosity, a fantastic holiday (wish I was still there!) I will be recommending the house and Essouira to anyone who will listen!
Exceeded all expectations!!!
I booked Dar Qawi for myself and 5 friends for five nights . From the outset, I received oustanding service from Kia (the lady we booked the riad through) who supplied us with detailed notes and advice about the riad and the local area in general. Once our taxi had arrived from Marrakech we were greated by the very friendly property manager who helped with our bags and guided us to the riad which was perfectly located. The riad was just a beautiful as the photos that are on the website. Each room had an ensuite bathroom which went sown very well with my five friends and super comfy beds and sofas! The property manager lived close by and offered us advice on restaurants and helped arrange daily activities in the local area. Quad biking through the sand dunes and watching the sunset over the sea was something else!! We all totally loved Sara the cook who came over each day and prepared a delicious breakfast for us all. On request we also enjoyed a traditional tagine meal and lovely moroccan salads! Locationwise the raid was perfect for our needs, it was only a ten minute walk away and the shops and restaurants (we spend hours meandering the streets looking at the traditional moroccan arts and crafts) are also minutes away. This really was one of my favourite holidays, staying in a riad rather than a hotel makes a real difference. It was so nice to go back to a nice clean riad after a day at the beach and enjoy the freshly prepared food on the roof terrace. Thank you very much for helping to create such a great holiday!! I am already looking forward to visiting again!!
Gorgeous riad in a delightful part of Morocco
This is a really comfortable and tastefully decorated riad in the heart of Essaouira's medina. The breakfasts were delicious and Jean-Louis couldn't have been a better host/manager. He was kind, courteous and nothing was too much trouble. Kia's notes are so comprehensive, I defy you to have a bad meal whilst you stay here! Don't forget to get Zara to cook for you - her stuffed squid is to die for.
A port in the volcanic ash storm!
we reserved 10 nights in april and at one stage looked like staying for considerably longer due to the problems with the volcanic ash cloud. This would have been an absolute blessing. The riad is perfectly placed, located close enough to all amenities to walk to in minutes yet away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets. Breakfasts are excellent and substantial. The home cooked evening meals are a must and we could have easily eaten in every night. Jean Louis was extremely helpful when we needed him. Definitely highly recommended.
Beautifully restored home in the old center
We spent 3 nights in Dar Qawi and were very sorry to leave. Everything was perfect: the insider's tips about Essaouira and arrival instructions we received in advance from Kia, the warm welcome and tour of the house by house agent Jean Louis, pampering and delicious meals prepared by Zara (we recommend her tajine with fish straight off the boat), the roof terraces, fresh flowers, beautiful furnishings, ideal location, comfortable beds, multiple bathrooms, plentiful bath and beach towels, fully equipped kitchen, and more! The house is just as wonderful as the website photos suggest.
We also had a great time exploring the town and were fortunate to have warm weather at this time of year, with little wind. Having all agreed that the living/dining room carpet was perfect, we tracked the same one down in the medina and so were able to bring a reminder of Dar Qawi back to the Netherlands.
We had a great time here, the house is lovely and the maid Zara is extremely helpful. We would love to return some time!It is very close to everything you will need in Essaouira, and also the beach! Bathrooms are lovely, great showers and also comfy beds and very nice sitting areas too. Excellent!
It was heaven!
Dar Qawi is a beautifully decorated house which instantly feels like home. It's peaceful but also very well situated for all the 'goings on' in the Medina, near to some wonderful restaurants and close to the beach. TWO roof terraces was a bit of a treat too! If you don't fancy going out, then there's Zara the housekeeper, an absolute jewel who cooks fabulous meals at very reasonable prices. Organising the stay was troublefree with friendly, helpful advice and information. Have recommended to friends and only hope that it's not fully booked when we want to go again!
Charming riad Essaouria medina
Lovely riad, nicely decorated, sunny terrace and centrally located in the medina. Zara, the cook/ cleaner is delightful.
Lovely food and atmosphere
We stayed in Essaouira in Dar Qawi for one week. The first impression of the villa was great! There were fresh flowers, fresh towels and bottles of water waiting in each bedroom. The candles were lit everywhere.
The villa itself is beautifully designed - lots of nice touches - vases, ornaments, etc. One could see a lot of thought and care went into it.
We were met and shown around by Jean. Jean was very friendly and helpful. Although he didn't speak English, we managed to understand each other well. There also was a lady who cooked and cleaned for us. The food was VERY good value and tasty!
The villa is located 3 min away from the market and the wall of Medina where you can park. Because we used our car almost every day, we appreciated the fact that we didn't need to walk for miles to the car.
However, there were a few minor inconveniences. E.g. the water feature downstairs worked only occasionally, it seemed to run out of water. When it did work, some water spillt on the floor which created dumpness and unpleasant smell.
There also was a whole in the floor just where the front door was. There were huge cocroaches coming out of there at nigt time. I think this whole must be urgently sealed!
Also, the table cloth was never changed for the whole 7 days.
The flowers in vases that were nice and fresh to begin with but were left to die and were not changed or thrown away.
Another thing we thought would be very useful is some basic CD player or instructions on how to play music through the DVD player.
Also, there was no microwave which was a little inconvenient.
The general impression was good and we enjoyed our stay in Dar Qawi. Read more

We are glasd you enjoyed your stay at Dar Qawi overall. In terms of the hole in the street outside the property, we were not aware of this. unfortunately Essaouira 'council' does not forewarn its residents when it undertakes work. Besides, we are unable to exert any influence on works that take place outside our property. I can imagine that what sounds like water pipe or swer works must be unpleasant! The story with the fountain is similar, during the height of the summer when water in Essaouira runs low, the 'council' will occasionally switch the water off without warning and this can affect the water pressure. I imagine that this would have had an impact on how it performed. There is absolutely no excuse for a dirty table cloth or dying flowers and this will be addressed immediately. I always furnish all our guests with my mobile telephone number and wish that i had known about this sooner. My apologies!
a beautiful tranquil haven
a beautiful tranquil haven...away from the hustle & bustle...we loved this
riad...it is beautifully decorated, had everything we needed, was larger than we
expected, absolutely faultless and would stay there everytime
This place is heaven! I have stayed here 2 years in a row and I will be back again next year, the riad is beautiful with lovely bedroom, a great entertaining area and a fantastic roof terrace where the fantastic maid Zahra serves delicous tagines and great breakfasts - also perfect for watching the sun go down over this fascinating town with a glass of wine!
Its location is perfect down a quiet street just minutes from great local bars and restaurants, the vast beach and the lively market!
I have been with a female friend each year but it would also be perfect for a romantic break!
If you want to experience real morocco whilst staying in a beautifully kept property with a very reliable and helpful maid then this is the perfect property for you!
A lovely holiday - Dar Qawi is just perfect
I visited Dar Qawi with two friends who had never been to a Moslem country and we had a wonderful time. The house is perfect and it is clear that so much thought has gone into making every detail just right. The Housekeeper, Zara looked after us really well and cooked us several delightful evening meals as well as our daily breakfast. We were really grateful to be met at the city gate by the Manager who guided us to the house. We found Essaouira a really safe and friendly place and would recommend it for young and old alike. There are lots of very reasonable restaurants and the fish is out of this world. We all hope to have the opportunity to return to Dar Qawi and thank Kia Armstrong for everything she did to ensure we had a perfect visit to Morocco.
