Description from the owner

This little hippy house is very well located being 2 minutes walk to the main square, Place Moulay Hassan.

The house is laid out over 4 floors and cosy enough for a couple yet enough space and privacy if there are 4. The style is very traditional with thick stone walls and original patterned tiles on the floors. It is furnished with a mix of modern 60’s pieces plus a few Moroccan artifax thrown in.

You get a feel for the real Essaouira when staying at Dar Emma, there are a handful of Moroccan families living in the small side street, all very friendly and making life a lot more interesting than if staying in a h...Read more

I am just about to set off to this house for the third time. Everything about the place is just lovely and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Close to the market, nice and quiet, stylish and comfortable it cannot be beaten. Emma, the owner, is a delight and very thoughtful of her guest's needs. Total heaven and haven.

The best place to stay in Essaouira!

Left on 04/08/2013 for a stay in January 2013

Dar Emma was just perfect - quiet, cool, comfortable and full of character!
The house is around 200 years old and it has been lovingly restored with lots of original details with modern twist. Its relaxing and cool vibe is a reflection of its owner, Emma. She is just a great person and awesome host. She made sure our stay was just perfect and without any stress. She has a wealth of great local connections (from reliable taxi service to everything you need to know). All we needed to do was giving Emma a call. There is a book (compiled by Emma) with many great recommendations and things to do. Emma showed us around to point out where to shop and eat on the first day. It proved to be very helpful and all of her suggestions were spot on! Amina, who came to clean the house, was also an amazing cook and Emma can arrange for her to come around and cook for you at an extra cost. She also built a fire in the fireplace for us every day. It really heated the ground floor of the house nicely and it was so romantic to watch the fire at night. We had an amazing time at Dar Emma and we can't wait to go back!

      Magical Essaouira

Left on 01/03/2013 for a stay in December 2012

Dar Emma is right in the medina in the walled town of Essaouira. The medina itself is buzzing with activity, a fantastic mixture of traditional Moroccan life with modernity pushing through. The old port is frozen in time. Dar Emma reflects that - a traditional riad with modern comforts. The house is rustic and basic but beautiful - with no roof in traditional riad style. Emma is a wonderful host and whatever you need or run out of or want advice about (from doctors to eating), she provides - almost instantly. There is a cleaner who comes every day who will also cook for you for an additional fee. But there are so many wonderful and local places to eat, it is better to be adventurous, in my view.

Despite a late night arrival due to lost bags (thanks Easyjet!) Essouira was both invigorating and charming. Dar Emma provided everything we needed for a truly Moroccan holiday and Emma's local knowledge and contacts meant that we got to see aspects of the area more off the beaten track than we would have been brave enough to find ourselves.

Fantastic food, architecture and character, Essouira has it all.

Dar Emma is a beautifully equipped house in the heart of essaouira - everything is on your doorstep and you couldn't wish for a better location. The people in the vicinity are friendly and fun - maybe too much fun, makes bartering with them that bit harder! It is a huge bonus to be welcomed when you arrive by either Graham or Emma and thus shown the best places to eat - we stuck to Graham's recommendations plus those from the book in the house and ate very very well, totally fished out! I think Dar Emma is excellent value and would be pushed to think how to complain... nope, can't think of anything!!

I travelled to Essaouira with a few friends a couple of weeks ago and stayed at Dar Emma. I have to admit that I fell in love with it before even seeing in just from the pictures online. I walked in and immediately knew it was a special house. The care that Emma takes is apparent and is not just in the bigger details but also in the small details. I highly recommend staying there.

      Beautiful Moments

Left on 05/11/2012 for a stay in April 2012

Staying at Dar Emma was beautiful. After joining a tour with one of the owners through the villa over 3 floors and 2 terraces we received a short overview about the city: best restaurants, Best breakfast, alcohol shop, bars, galleries etc.
we received any informations and help we need...the house is only a few steps to the central places of the small city.
so amina, the woman who came everday and cleaned the villa discretely, made our end of the day perfect: she cooked us the most flavorful moroccian dinner ever !!
The weather in Essaouira was beautiful and i made coffee every morning in the sweetest kitchen, while the sun was shining on my back. The fact, that the villa has no roof made things more than adventurous! while the nights are getting a bit colder...we started fire in the chimney every evening and spend beautiful moments in that warm atmosphere!
the kitchen offers u everything u need for making breakfast or dinner! around the corner is directly a shop where u can buy every morning fresh bread, eggs, milk etc for breakfast.
If we had any questions about planning a trip or any other questions, the owners were available for us everytime.
The beautiful terraces offers u a private place with sun over the whole day...
At least we would come back to Essaouira...only to stay some days in that special atmosphere in the little maroccan hippie house "Dar Emma" !

A refuge of privacy and peace perfectly located in the bustling medina. Dar Emma envelopes you, as you enter the little house it unfolds and expands as you assend the tiled staircase. The bedrooms are gorgeous. I loved the wet room, it was a joy to shower.
Each morning I would make some coffee and go up to the top roof terrace to listen to the sounds of the Medina waking... sounds of call to prayer, seagulls, birds and the ocean... I never wanted to leave.
Essaouria is an incredible place, I cannot wait to return and absorb the sights, sounds, smells and tastes again.

Best choice we made in Morocco!

Left on 04/10/2012 for a stay in April 2012

Really can't say enough good things about Dar Emma or Emma herself. We drove from Marrkech in a car provided by Emma, safely and punctually and arrived to be met by Emma herself literally at the car. After showing us the house we were taken on a detailed tour of the medina by Emma, without which I'm not sure we would have had half the experience that we did. Amina the housekeeper made our first dinner and my mouth still waters at the thought of it. Definitely worth it to have authentic home cooked food as you sit by the fire in Dar Emma. The house is beautiful, quiet, clean, comfortable and one of the most unique places I've ever stayed in. Kids loved it, we loved it and I'm just jealous of the next person who gets to enjoy this gorgeous house, amazing city, Amina's cooking and Emma's expertise and attentiveness to our needs (which included driving me to an amazing argan Oil shop, helping is get reservations at an extremely popular and totally booked restaurant and introducing me to her carpet guy from whom we later ended up buying 2 pieces).

Dar Emma was a wonderful location for our family half-term break. It's in the heart of the medina yet has a lovely calm quietness once you close the door. Emma's welcome put us at ease immediately, as well as arming us with the best insider tips. And to come back to a lovely clean house at the end of the day felt like a real treat. As I said, a real home from home for the four of us.

Dar Emma has an inspired design and relaxed atmosphere. From the minute you step inside you feel at home with the central staircase open to the sea breezes and the and the seagulls flying over head. Although there is a bustling tourist trade just outside Dar Emma is an oasis of calm in the middle of the old medina and Emma and Graham have good suggestions of where to go if you want to get away from it all. There are three lounging areas all set up for relaxation and a kitchen with everything you need to feel at home.

Left on 07/04/2011 for a stay in July 2011

Dar Emma is a great place to stay in a lovely, relaxed Moroccan city, where you can wander the streets without any fear of being coerced into buying from all the stalls that line its streets (a la Marrakesh) Emma herself is a wonderful host, who takes the time to show you around the town, point out all the best places to go and is always on hand to give any advice that you may need. The house itself has been lovingly put together, has a wonderful bathroom and shower, two bedrooms a kitchen/dining room and roof terrace over its four floors. One small gripe is that the (and maybe it was just at this time of year) the rooms were a little damp, so you may need to have on the de-humidifiers (which she has provided) to combat this. Essaouira itself is a beautiful small city. We were there just four days, but could have easily stayed longer.

      Perfect escape from Marrakech!!

Left on 02/28/2011 for a stay in February 2011

Dar Emma, Essaouira is situated in the most perfect part of Essaouira - close to the shops, the beach, the restaurants all within a 10 minutes stroll. The house is authentic although a little nippy as we were there in Feb and with no roof the nights can get really cold. We were really glad to have had the tour by Emma when we arrived as it really highlighted the best places to go and when we decided to go somewhere she hadn't suggested we were so disappointed. Essaouira is beautiful and really worth the 3 hour coach from Marrakech. Dar Emma was a lovely escape and a great place to hide away with kids. It could do with a bit of updating as all is looking a bit tired but still worth a visit. We love Essaouira and Dar Emma was fine x

Dar Emma is a charming oasis tucked into the medina in Essaouira. Its beautiful design, great kitchen area, 2 terraces and open sky create a fantastic hideaway, yet, just open the door and you are just a few feet from the bustling medina. The bedrooms and bathroom are a perfect blend of rustic comfort.

It's proximity to the lovely restaurants and markets, as well as the ramparts and waterfront make it ideal. Emma's knowledge and deep connection with Essaouira and its residents add a dimension to your stay that makes you feel at home wherever you walk in the city.

Without going completely over the top, it is difficult to articulate the experience at Dar Emma. Emma and Graham have created an ideal point of solace and adventure- in the heart of a truly bohemian little town.

      We, honestly, loved every minute.

From the moment Graham graciously grabbed us from the airport in Essaouira, everything was very easy, relaxed, and organized. Emma provided a very helpful tour of town the next day, loaded with suggestions on where, who and whats... We took them all and were never steered wrong.

The home itself is cozy- the decor is artfully balanced midcentury modern/traditional, the beds are fantastic, the kitchen has everything you'd need, the rooftop is stellar, the fireplace- romantic. A very deep bit of silence in a bustling location. No need to look far for anything, including a more ideal place.

Dar Emma is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway. Stylish, comfortable, fantastic location with all restaurants, bars and shops literally around the corner!

The house has so many wonderful quirky features which really make it very unique. The roof terrace was our favourite part, perfect for lounging around reading (there were plenty of books for us to choose from!) and also for enjoying a few drinks in the evening!

Emma was fantastic showing us around when we arrived and even booking restaurants for us. Nothing was too much trouble.

Amina's cooking was the best in our entire Morocco experience. The chicken tagine and mezze was superb. A very hard act to follow!

Left on 04/11/2010 for a stay in March 2010

Dar Emma is homely but elegant, making up in intimacy what it lacks in the grandeur often sought from the Moroccan riad. The little two-bedroom house is constructed as a spiral around four floors, with the core sky-well granting access to all the elements. Two outside terraces decorated with simple tile-work, rustic railings and graceful succulents provide well-sheltered nooks for al fresco eating and drinking. Throughout the house is thoughtfully decorated, blending modernist shapes with practical rustic finishes, and accessorised with interesting objets. The little kitchen-ette has good basic facilities and the stone hearth comes with a good stock of wood. To stay there was to participate in the living fabric of the Medina, yet the house afforded good privacy. The location could not have been better: central, near the bay, close to shops and restaurants and a great local patisserie conjuring almonds into little whirls of pleasure. Being open to the elements has its challenges in a windy sea-port, and we were glad of the daily visits of Amina the housekeeper in keeping the swirling sand-dust and slight damp in check. She also provided us with some of the best food we had during our visit, in more than ample portions. Emma herself was easy-going but professional, giving good advice and even welcoming us into her home in Sidi Kaki for an afternoon visit. The town is definitely changing with the tourist market, but it's still a living fishing-port with a vibrant market-centred life, set in some really exceptional 18th century architecture - good for people-watching over a coffee or mint tea. It was great to wander long desert-beaches, and to return late-evening for sunset over the harbour. There are some good daytime activities, like the cooking workshop at Madada, but Essaouira is not renowned for its night-life, and we were sometimes glad of the Scrabble set and wireless internet connection back at home base. In all a wonderful place for a chilled-out week far away.

Left on 01/05/2010 for a stay in December 2009

After the bustle of Marrakesh this was a superb retreat to escape too. From the minute I booked this place Emma could not have been more helpful to try and make sure our trip was stress free and a success. The house is everything that you are sold on the website and more, some days we would only leave the roof top terrace to get fresh bread and some more oranges, while the location of the Dar Emma makes it perfect and so easy to explore Essaouira. We ate at local amazing restaurants (tagine and lots of seafood), quad biked through the sand dunes, hired push bikes, shopped in the souks, had a hammam (what an expereince with the locals), watched the fanastic sunsets every night and partied at Taros on New Year – what more do you want from a holiday!

Left on 09/29/2009 for a stay in September 2009

Our experience in Dar Emma was more than we expected. The house is not only “gorgeous” - as Emma describes it- but also quite inspirational… every corner has something to offer and the details are just unique and a delight.
Emma showed us the local insight of the Medina, gave us tips on places to visit, where to dine and where to do some particular shopping, which was very helpful. Our favorite place was Elizir the food, the music and the atmosphere are just splendid!

Essaouira is truly magical… Dar Emma was home for us.

Some people travel around looking for something special, but Dar Emma in Essaouira is way more than that, it is a discovery, a gift full of creativity, a pleasant place to rest and simply enjoy the beauty of life in a perfect way.

      Thank you so much Emma!

Dar Emma is the perfect place to stay in Essaouira if you are looking for comfort, style, great location and a place to relax. Situated in the heart of the medina it is close to the beach, restaurants, souks and shops but hidden away enough to be a quiet refuge. We stayed for a week and loved chilling on the roof terrace which gets the sun all day, strolling to the bakery round the corner every morning for fresh croissants and walking along the long sandy beach.
Emma welcomed us on our arrival and gave us really useful recommendations on the best places to eat and visit. A homemade meal cooked by Amina is a must - a delicious Moroccan feast!
Essaouira is a great place to visit if you need a break from the Moroccan cities and want to relax in a very friendly and pretty seaside town.
We would definately recommend a stay at Dar Emma and plan a trip back very soon.
