Estoril became an International tourist destination both during and after the Second World War. During thi...s time a high number of dignitaries in exile came to Estoril. Miklós Horthy (†1957), the regent of Hungary, Juan Carlos I of Spain, Umberto II of Italy and Carol II of Romania also lived in Estoril during this time.

Connected to Lisbon by the scenic seaside road called the 'Marginal', Cascais, Estoril and Oeiras are considered the more affluent suburbs of Lisbon, sporting their own beaches and coastal walkway. A short 25 km drive along the A5 motorway also links these areas to the centre of Lisbon and its international airport in less than 30 minutes (outside peak hours)
Cascais, a picturesque former fishermen's village, and nearby Estoril were used as a summer retreat by the nobility for centuries. They were also the havens of many kings and aristocrats exiled during the 20th century.
The region is considered as the Portuguese Riviera, and is also occasionally the coast of two Springs as the weather in Autumn is usually similar to that which occurs in Spring. This particularity allows for nature to bloom once more before entering a mild winter.
The very unique climate combined with a large offer in terms of recreation, sports, accommodation and meeting resources attract many international events all year round.
The two main resort towns along what is known as the Estoril coast are Estoril and Cascais. Estoril has a famous casino, Casino Estoril. Estoril was the residence of Juan de Borbón, pretender to the Spanish throne during the last part of the 20th century. There are remains of Roman mansions dating back around 2,000 years.
Estoril used to be a significant fishing port. Due to the vision of Fausto Cardoso de Figueiredo and his business partner Augusto Carreira de Sousa, it became an international tourist destination both during and after the Second World War. During this time a high number of dignitaries in exile came to Estoril. Miklós Horthy (1957), the regent of Hungary, lived and died in exile in Estoril after the Second World War. Juan Carlos I of Spain, Umberto II of Italy and Carol II of Romania also lived in Estoril during this time.

Within easy reach of the capital Lisbon by train from Cais do Sodre station both Estoril and Cascais, (less than 20 minutes apart on foot) have long been the preferred getaway of rich Lisboetas and well-to-do European visitors.
Known as a haunt of international spies in World War II and later hideaway of various pretenders to European thrones, Estoril is now a palm-fringed, pastel playground of the well-off and well connected, drawn by a winning combination of Europe's largest casino, a range of first-class hotels and some superb golf courses. Praia de Tamariz is the lovely beach at the centre of the town with showers, an ocean swimming pool and a number of good bars for a sun-downer.
Estoril plays host to the Estoril open tennis tournament in April - an important clay-court warm-up for the French open and the Estoril Golf course has held the PGA Portuguese open. Other nearby golf courses include the Quinta da Marinha, Penha Longa, Quinta da Beloura, Estoril-sol and Belas Clube.
