Description from the owner
E Komo Mai - Welcome!
In Hawaii, the most important aspect of life is 'ohana, or family. We are a local family and want to share the magic of aloha with your 'ohana as you enjoy our spectacular location. We have named our home Makana O Ke Kai (Gift of the Sea) because on the day we broke ground on the property, a beautiful Hawaiian monk seal came up on the sand as if to welcome us to this special place.
In the Hawaiian culture, this would be known as a hoailona (sign) or blessing. We invite you to enjoy the tranquil life of the "real" Hawaii, away from the crowded commercialism of Waikiki. A stay at Makana O Ke Kai will be a memo...Read more

We spent 6 days here with another couple, it was a great location close to Pearl Harbor with a nice quiet beach right in front of the main house. The home was very well kept up and clean and the hosts Carmen and Jan were very nice and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

Gig Harbor, WashingtonPerfect home-away-from-home by the beach in Hawaii
Left on 01/03/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We were trying to avoid the large hotel/condo scene near the city, and wanted a place that was centrally located for easy access to all parts of the island. This rental, located in a residential neighborhood, was the perfect choice for our family of five. The owners were wonderful people, and always available if we needed help with anything. Our rental house was located right behind their home with easy access to the beach and all beach equipment. There was a nice long stretch of beach for walking, with very few people. For swimming you might need to bring water shoes, as there was some coral in the water, but there is a park close by just down the beach that looked pretty sandy. The southern exposure provided beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The house was very clean and well-furnished to meet all our needs, including internet access, a dishwasher, washer and dryer, microwave, and beach towels. I have absolutely no complaints and would definitely stay here again.

We wanted to go visit our son and his family who were just stationed at Hickam aFB. After looking at several options and comparing reviews we felt that this rental stood out for the five of us. We really felt welcomed when we where greeted with a tray of snacks and a fresh cut pineapple in the fridge. The first day our sons spent 12 hours on what seemed like our own private beach enjoying the 3 person kayak, boogie and surf boards and snorkle equipment. All of those are yours to use. It also came with a high chair that made dinner with our grand daughter a breeze. Jan and Carmen where greet hosts. They gave us the local aspect of the does and don'ts when it came to tourist attractions which was very helpful. This place was more than we anticipated and would recommend it to anyone. And by the way, you won't believe the beautiful sunrises you will see from the beach.
Sincerely new found friends of Jan and Carmen -

Jan and Carmen were the best people to work with. This was hands down the easiest and least stressful way to vacation. The place is located in a great spot that is easy to get around and see the sites. The house is a great size for the 7 of us that stayed there. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and cookware. The beds are comfortable, the living room has wonderful furniture and the house is spotless. The beach is beautiful! If you get up early you can watch the most amazing sun rise over Diamond Head. Jan and Carmen as wonderful people. We'd go back to Hawaii just to see them! They treated us far better than any hotel staff ever would. Truly amazing people.

I must say the rental met and exceeded our expectations. Carmen was a great host and the house proved to be a wonderful home base for exploring Oahu. The direct access to the beach was awesome and having the snorkeling gear, surf boards and other beech gear was great. Carmen even alerted us when the monk seals decided to come onto the beach to warm themselves. It's a residential neighborhood, so it was a bit noisy at times, but easily disregarded. We would definately rent this property again.

Left on 07/15/2012 for a stay in May 2012
Carmen was great as a host from the start, providing us access to her own house while waiting for the rental to be cleaned (we arrived early morning). She was very responsive to our needs and did not hesitate to replace items or provide us with others that better suited our needs of 6 grown-ups. The house was spotless when we took it. It is setup to provide a very relaxing atmosphere. We felt the "vaccation mode" as soon as we entered, regardless of the gruelsome 12 hrs flight. We particularly appreciated having direct access to the beach from the front yard of the house. We enjoyed evening walks on the beach, looking at the beautiful sunset. We would definitely rent this property again if we go back to Huau.

The house is in an ideal location, close to Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, Waikiki; very convenient. The house was right on the beach and it was very clean, comfortable. Jan and Carmen were great hosts. We enjoyed getting to know them and our conversations. The yard is gated, secured. There is a private patio with table and chair and a BBQ for the guests. The neighbors can be a little obnoxious on weekends but just close your bedroom windows and there is no more noise. Our one week stay flew by and I wish we had another week there. I would recommend this place for a large family instead of staying at a hotel. The rates are very reasonable.

Wow! Words cannot express how we felt about our stay...if you went to visit family that you like where you could totally feel at home...this is for you. Its like having your own private beach cottage complete with a family dog. I have never used Vrbo before and was a little uneasy, but it was all great. The pictures do not come close to doing it justice and Jan & Carmen were beyond helpful...we have new friends! All the locals were also friendly and helpful. On a five star rating its 12+!!! The house was great, the beach was great...we have zero complaints and even referred people at the airport on the way out of town to stay here as they had done the "resort thing" downtown and they did not like it

I traveled with 5 young adults and the house was perfect for us. Beach was right there and being able to use a kayak, boogie boards, surf boards and lounge chairs was wonderful. We were in between the North Shore and Honolulu where we traveled several times. It is like having your own private beach!! It was a wonderful vacation and a perfect place to stay.

Great beach house in Oahu
Left on 03/22/2012 for a stay in February 2012
Our six person family enjoyed this beach house very much. We wanted to avoid the over-commercialization of Waikiki and enjoy the island, and staying in this house helped us do that. It was very clean and had just what we needed for a week long stay. It was an easy drive to the sights. The beach was so nice, not at allcrowded, and we fell asleep each night listening to the sounds of the ocean. Carmen and Jan did everything they could to make us comfortable, even loaning us a cooler. Definitely recommend. Enjoy!!

This unit is in a terrific location out of the "noise" of Honolulu but close enough to make visits there, if you want. It has its own south facing private beach where the water is relatively calm. We were truly fortunate to see 3 monk seals on the beach - they are very rare. You need a car, but grocery, etc. shopping is only about 5 minutes away. There are a number of golf courses close at hand. We tried the Ewa Beach course, which is within walking distance (if you aren't carrying clubs) and found it quite good.
The owners are very hospitable people who work hard to ensure you have a great time. The house is very clean and well maintained. It is fully equipped, including a propane bbq. We would definitely come back here. -

This was our home away from home. Our visit was from Oct. 24 - Nov 3rd, 2011. The house had everything we needed and made our stay enjoyable. There was a crib, highchair, and beach toys for our little guy. We easily found our way around town and downtown Waikiki is 30 mins away. We can't thank the owners of the house enough for making us feel so welcome and helping us out if ever we needed anything. Renting a house is definitely the way to go! The property was always neat and clean and very private. The beach was never crowded. Very peaceful. It was everything we expected. Thanks again for everything!

We stayed with a party of 8 (four adults, three teens, and a pre-schooler) for 16 days at the Ewa Beach guest house. The house was lovely, and our hosts were gracious. We were able to do so many things from this location. We took surf lessons at Hawaiian Fire near Barber's Point, went to a Luau, played Putt Putt golf, hit the water park, visited Wikiki often, toured the north shore, Sea Life Park and the Polynesian Cultural Center, and so much more. And when we weren't touring, we had a wonderfully serene beach to relax on. The house was as pictured and well equipped. The gated drive provided privacy and security. We had two rental cars and there was ample parking.
While we were there, Hawaiian Monk seals rested on the beach in front of the house. It was an unexpected treat to see the endangered animals.
We had only one down side to this location, but it would not keep me from returning to stay here again. It was warm in late June through Mid July, and there was no air conditioning, there were ceiling fans in each room and it was warm only for a few hours in the late afternoon. Ewa Beach has coral so bring your reef shoes.
