An historic and elegant Country House Bed and Breakfast in Fife, Ladywell House is the perfect base for Central Scotland. The house is a former manse, and was, until her death, the home of Frances Shand Kydd, mother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. DunblaneFabulous house for New Year break
Left on 01/03/2013 for a stay in January 2013
We booked Ladywell House to celebrate New Year with two other families and their children. We were a party of six adults, eight kids, two dogs and a couple of gerbils (I kid you not). The house catered for us all with ease and great comfort. Our host, Duncan, gave us a very warm welcome and immediately made us feel completely at home. He took time to give us all an individual tour of his home and explain the workings of this historic house. The rooms are large and clean with fantastic views across the adjacent countryside. To avoid that countryside making its unwelcome way into the house, it was great to have access to the boiler house for drying jackets and muddy boots. Post daytime activities took place in the lounge and we loved its many features and it became the main socialising venue for the duration of our stay. It was great to have a real fire as the focal point in the room rather than the TV (although there was a small one in the corner). We agonised over the 1,000 piece jigsaw over many hours and thanks to the efforts of two of the mums it was completed before we left.
The house is located within easy walking distance from Falkland. The palace and the town are a must see whether you like history or not and there are a couple of pubs to choose from which are good value. There are plenty of walks in the area and we particularly enjoyed the one through the old Falkland estate and up the side of a gorge to the waterfall at Maspie Den. Well worth it if you have a couple of hours to kill. We took a drive over to St andrews for a walk on the beach to blow Hogmanay cobwebs away and it is no more than a half hour drive. In fact the whole of Fife is close to hand so Ladywell is the perfect base for exploring the area.
In short, if you are looking for a comfortable place to stay, in historic surroundings, with great character as a base to explore Fife, we highly recommend Ladywell House. We will definitely be back to sample Duncan's hospitality again!
