Fernstone Retreat was built in 1940 by James Hankins a prominent local businessman and used as a mountain retreat and conference center for prominent politicians and business owners of the day. Independence, WV, United StatesProperty has maintenance issues
Left on 08/28/2012 for a stay in August 2012
Overall, most of my group liked the location and the amenities. The kitchen and bathrooms are in good condition. Our reunion group felt at home visiting among each other and having many choices of where to gather.
I understand this property is meant to be rustic and historic and that the buildings are older (I'm used to that aspect of the place) but there are many maintenance issues that need addressed to match the amount of rent charged. Most importantly, the water quality is terrible and the open sewer manholes on the grounds were a safety issue, not to mention disgusting. I would recommend Fernstone to my friends to consider, but make sure that they investigate the place thoroughly before booking. The signs in the driveway are cute but scared some away. One person even went to a motel when they arrived late at night because of the signs. I know, we should have warned everyone. -

APO, AP, United StatesSmall Wedding Weekend
Left on 08/14/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We had family come from Michigan & Pittsburgh for our wedding ceremony & the weekend was enjoyed by all!! The pictures that are posted on the Fernstone website does not give this property justice. This property has rustic beauty that can truly be enjoyed by those that love the outdoors!! The property was accessible for my wife's mother & my mother which are disabled. The property is very secluded & the hiking trails go on & on. This property is perfect for a large group of people & we recommend renting the entire property. The only downside is the game room games are outdated & could use some TLC, but we barely used it. The kitchen's had plenty of dishes to include: pots, pans, silverware, & plates to accommodate 25 people. Additional towels are needed for large groups. The Corral was large enough for all to sit around & relax. Both families enjoyed their weekend at the Fernstone Retreat & we would recommend this property to other large groups!!

Pittsburgh, PA, United StatesFernstone Retreat

Our League stayed here for the 2nd year for our bowling weekend. The property is maintained well. Not a luxury accomodation, but for a stay in the woods LUXURIOUS. The lodge, ponds, and fire pits were our favorite spots to congregate over the weekend. An update on the outside gas grill would be a plus.

Elizabethtown, PA, United StatesFernstone- a quiet getaway
Left on 05/29/2012 for a stay in May 2012
My husband and I stayed at Fernstone over Memorial weekend. We were looking for a quiet getaway and Fernstone provided exactly what we needed. We stayed in the WhiteHouse- it was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. There are other buildings at the retreat but we were fortunate to have the entire retreat to ourselves. Fernstone is only about 10 miles to Ohiopyle and is also close to the Frank Lloyd Wright homes. Nemacolin resort is also close where my husband and I went ziplining. I would recommend Fernstone to anyone looking for some peace of mind in the Laurel Highlands and still be close to area hot spots. It would also be a great place for a family reunion with all of the additional lodging, game room and pool.
