      Beautiful, serene escape!

Left on 04/27/2013 for a stay in April 2013

My family of four had a blast at this cabin. The whole family loved the hot tub on the fully gated back deck (main level) that the dogs and my four year old could be on without any safety concerns. My 11 year old loved the pool table on the lower level. The master bed/bath on the main level was spacious with a nice separate shower or jetted tub and the other two bedrooms on the lower level were at opposite ends giving the kids maximum privacy, in-room TVs, and a bathroom in between. I also loved that the cabins have a large woodpile in the back so you can have all the relaxing fires you want without bringing/collecting/buying any firewood. Due to being on the side of a mountain, there's no real yard to play in so you definitely need to watch the kids and dogs around the property, but we thought the location was wonderful!

      Rental has declined in expericence

Left on 10/10/2012 for a stay in September 2012

This was our 10th year coming to leatherwood and our 5th time staying at black bear lodge, and the house was not up to its previous visits. Mostly disappointed in how dirty and dusty the home was. The carpet downstairs was really dirty, cob webs everywhere, doors and windows dirty , etc. also strong sewer smell on day outside. Also beds have become very uncomfortable as compared to previous years. We will not stay at this location again, we will try another location or another area to visit.

We regret not hearing about your dissatisfaction until now. Given the opportunity we make every effort to accomodate our guests if we are notified of issues at check-in, including upgrades. Leatherwood Rentals and the owners of Black Bear Lodge appreciate your feedback. Updates including hardwood flooring in the basement are in the works. Brief sewer smells can become noticeable when septic systems are stressed due to a large influx of gray water. Gray water refers to water used through sinks and showers.

      Return to Black Bear

Left on 12/16/2011 for a stay in December 2011

This was my 2nd or 3rd stay at Black Bear. I love the place because it seems so isolated. From the back deck all you see is trees and mountains, not a hint that you are in any kind of development. Also, there is a long distance on either side before any other cabins. You can have a big hot-tub party with music going and know you are not bothering anybody. The screened in porch was fixed, so it's nice again. Furniture in living area is getting a bit worn looking, but it's still comfortable. The two wood-burning fire places are a big draw to keep us coming back. Nothing like a real wood fire in a log cabin for the real mountain experience.

The driveway is a bit steep, but short and paved, so access is easy into the cabin.

We always enjoy our stay at Black Bear.

      Splendid Time away From Home

Left on 11/09/2011 for a stay in October 2011

The home was fully furnished with cooking, linens, towels, utensils, grill, and toiletry supplies. It was a super location from the entrance, and to several other spots;such as, Blowing Rock and Grandfather's Mountain. The best part of the trip was the view from the master bedroom and from upper level den. My mother has cancer and this was one thing she wanted to do. Taking walks each morning onto the horse trails were awesome. The leaves were beautiful and the quietness gave the effect no one else was on earth except for us..The only thing we had problems with were the ladybugs in the master bedroom, but this will certainly not keep us from coming back next year!

      Beautiful scenery and cabin

Left on 11/05/2011 for a stay in October 2011

The cabin was nice but it was discustingly dirty. The basement carpet was stained all over from dog urine and smelled profusley. There were thousands of dead lady bugs in the house and in the screened in porch that made it unusable. The floor hadn't been mopped in a long time. My wife made one trip across it with white sox on and they became solid brown with dirt. You could feel the grime. Nothing was dusted in quite some time. The decor was beautiful and tastefull. The master bed was too soft for me but the wife loved it...I couldn't sleep in it so I slept on the couch. You need to fire the cleaning crew or do a little more supervision one!
The driveway is very hard to navigate...especially with a one ton truck, but it worked. For the $200.00 per night I spent I was disapointed only because of the cleanliness. Leatherwood people are wonderful and beyond reproach. The whole place is really nice...the cleaning crew sucks!

First of all, I found the website to be very easy to use. Great pictures and good discriptions of cabins . Black Bear Lodge was fantastic. Everything we were looking for. Long range mnt. views, hot tub on the deck w/ the view, woodburning fireplace, and WiFi. We were very pleased with the condition of the cabin. We enjoyed hiking the many trails. We had a wonderful weekend.

Best View I saw from any of the homes near this cabin

Left on 11/19/2010 for a stay in November 2010

I loved the cabin over all and the views were spectacular. I loved the 2 wood burning fireplaces and plenty of wood supplied. The recreation room with the pool table was a lot of fun. The place was clean and neat and the style of the home was perfect for the mountains.

The only concerns I have were of basic TLC and some repairs that need to be done. Screened in porch was poorly furnished (if you could call it that) and a lot of the screens were torn and pulled out on the sides, just flapping in the breeze. No way to keep bugs out in Summer. The decks were great but sorely needed stain and sealing. The carpet in the recreation room needed cleaning very badly. One set of jets in the hot tub were not working. I just get the overall impression of the owners not keeping up with taking care of the place very well.

I am going back to Leatherwood next year and would love to rent this cabin again, if it was better taken care of. Otherwise I would rent another cabin.

      Thank you.

Left on 10/20/2010 for a stay in October 2010

Our family visits Leatherwood at least once a year. Although we've enjoyed our stays at other cabins Black Bear is our favorite. The open floor plan with a large combined kitchen, dining area, and living room makes it easy to accommodate our large family and extended family gatherings. The cabin decoration is warm and homey, making it feel like home.

A slice of wilderness with all of the luxury

Left on 09/09/2010 for a stay in September 2010

We planned our trip to Leatherwood on a Tuesday and were actually sitting in the hot tub of the Black Bear Lodge that Friday evening. For a last minute decision, everything came together perfectly. The house was spacious for our family of (4) and we really enjoyed some of the most beautiful skies at night this planet has to offer. Our first day, we ventured to Linville Falls for some hiking and pictures, then stopped at Blowing Rock for a late lunch before returning to the lodge. Our next day, we took a 1-hour horseback ride with Hugh, the Leatherwood trail guide. He was great! My daughters really enjoyed the horses. We decided to take advantage of the local trails and went on a 2-hour hike that afternoon. We spent some time fishing as well. We really couldn't have asked for more. The trip was one that we will remember for a lifetime.

Black Snake - Bear - Lodge

Left on 05/28/2010 for a stay in May 2010

Our family of four stayed at Black Bear Lodge. Making the reservations, arranging for a trail ride, picking up the keys, checking out - all very streamlined pleasant services. We did receive extra special service on the night of our arrival. My husband was standing in the dining area while I put groceries away. He was looking at the various decor items when he reached out to touch a snake sculpture & promptly screamed like a little bitty girl. The snake was very much alive. The snake basked in the sunny window whilst we had much excitement. My idea of using an oven mitt & picking it up myself didn't sit well with him. The phones had been turned to the answering machine - it was after 7pm. He drove to office to look for someone. He encountered a couple on an aTV, asked if they worked here, they did, & if the would help, they would. Soon we had three snake situation resolvers! Special thanks to Lizzie who backed me up in insisting the snake not be harmed. After all, the snake lives there and we were just visitors. The men managed to whisk the snake out through open windows & removed screens. Lots of excitement! Very helpful, accomodating, & above & beyond service.
The lodge was spacious & had breathtaking views of the sunset. We had a wonderful time hiking several trails even though we did find some trail signs confusing - which way are we supposed to go? - we had fun while making our way out of the woods. The barn staff was great - we were able to have a three hour trail ride although it was a special request. The horses were fabulous & the trail leader was pretty great too. My son caught a large fish and my daughter loved the 5 tvs in the lodge. We visited Grandfather Mountain and Tweetsie Railroad. The best thing about this vacation was the beautiful locale of the cabin. Stellar views, silence and beauty. The worst thing was a few dead bugs, dust bunnies & rustiness of the grill requiring us to use aluminum foil.

      Black Bear Lodge was GREAT!!

Left on 03/24/2010 for a stay in March 2010

We loved the location, the house, the weather was excellant, everything just as it should be. We enjoyed searching for all the bear "stuff" in the house, the hot tub worked wonderfully, the grill was nice and big and we had a great time getting lost for a bit on the many trails nearby. It was wonderful to be able to bring our dogs, who also thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The office staff are always friendly and helpful. I can't think of anything negative at all - we would recommend Leatherwood and Black Bear Lodge to everyone. We have already referred several of our friends to homes we have stayed at in Leatherwood and will continue that tradition with this one - THANKS for being such a wonderful place! We hope to have a place of our own on Leatherwood some day :) GLO

Wonderful seclded spot in the mountains

Left on 01/30/2010 for a stay in January 2010

The lodge is fantastic, with amazing views over the valley. To say it's a ling way into the mountain is an understatement but good directions and roads within the Leatherwood Rental park don't make this an issue.
We went with a 2 yr old and had some inevitable childrpoofing issues, but nothing that was dangerous or would prevent us going back when his sister is that age.
There are some great walks from the lodge cabin even if it's very wet or muddy.
The service from the staff on site was fantastic and are very keen to answer any questions you might need.
The one downside - the lodge lacks a welcome letter / pack that explains some specifics about the lodge (eg: the closed chimney setting) but this shouldn't be a decision breaker if deciding on whether to stay there. The hottub and pool table just add the finishing touches to what is already a great vacation destination.
      We'd go back again.

We enjoyed our stay at Black Bear Lodge. The property was clean and in good condition. The people were very friendly and helpful. We would stay again in the future. Just wish it was a little bit closer to Boone. The roads to get to Boone were extremely curvy and therefore slow. As for the lodge itself, the beds were very comfortable. The hot tub was perfect in the chilly evening. The pool table was fun. Bring your own movies to watch, since there are none on site. All and all, we had a great stay. Everything we wanted was there. Thank you for the wonderful weekend.

A little bit of heaven in the mountains of North Carolina

Left on 10/11/2009 for a stay in September 2009

Our family has stayed in a Leatherwood Rentals home on three other occasions and have nothing but the highest praise for the staff at Leatherwood. We've stayed at other lodges, but for a lot of reasons, Black Bear Lodge has become the family favorite. My younger daughter said it best, "This place feels like home."
The Lodge is spacious and has a lovely kitchen and a large, homey dining area. We truly appreciate these as we cook large meals and like to invite our local friends to dinner. The common room on the lower level is perfect for popcorn and movies, and is the scene of our family pool tournaments. The three bedrooms are large, comfortable, and are excellent hide-aways when you need a little "alone" time. There are two decks overlooking the mountains. We recommend the lower one for rainy days as the porch swing is under cover. The hot tub on the upper deck is always great, rain or shine! The owers have included so many homey touches, so many delightful little surprises tucked in here and there within Black Bear Lodge; it's no wonder that it feels like home.

Although we had shceduled to stay at another property we were very pleased when the staff had to switch our party to this property. I have stayed at Leatherwood several times and have always been extremely pleased. This property was very nice with tons of room for all. The beds in each of the three bedrooms were the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. No I didn't sleep in all three but I did test them. Due to the steepness of the driveway I recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle if there is snow on the ground but other than that this is a very nice home, well maintained with a large game room that will suit any families needs.
