Additional Location Information
For the sixth consecutive year, Northeast Florida’s Amelia Island has placed among the Top 10 US Islands in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.
Rich in history and natural beauty, Northeast Florida’s Amelia Island invites you to reconnect with the things that matter most and create moments that stay with you for life. With 13 miles of pristine beaches, abundant wildlife and clear, calm waters, Amelia Island and its quaint charm has been a beloved destination for generations. As the only territory in the United States to have seen rule under eight flags, Amelia Island still retains many of their influences: from French, Spanish and British to pirates and patriots. Often summed up as "the French visited, the Spanish developed, the English named and the Americans tamed". Enjoy her historic sites and captivating festivals for an experience that’s uniquely Floridian.
For a place that delivers slow, Southern charm, Fernandina Beach is a Victorian-era seaport village that has evolved into a picturesque downtown shopping area filled with quaint, one-of-a-kind shops and plenty of places to meet and greet over food and drinks.
Visitors can explore the island with a tour in a horse-drawn carriage, on a trolley, on one of the many boat tours, or on a self-guided walking tour. The island’s historic district is included on the National Register of Historic Places. There are even tales of Pirate Adventures with some saying once buried treasure still lies beneath the beach.
Fort Clinch on Amelia Island became one of Florida's first state parks in 1936.
The oldest existing lighthouse in Florida, built in 1838, is located next to Fort Clinch.
The Palace Saloon, operating since 1903, is the oldest saloon in Florida with much of the interior dating to 1878.
Fernandina is the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry with boats uploading one million pounds of shrimp each year.
Amelia Island is a bird sanctuary and its nature trails include five stops listed on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.
Amelia Island State Park is the only state park in Florida that offers horseback riding on the beach.

“Large segments of the traveling public are today convinced (and they're right, in my view) that apartment/home rentals cost much less than hotels and improve the quality of the stay.”
