“Cottage holiday in ravenglass” The position of the cottage for exploring the South West area of the lake district is perfect. The accommodation on a working farm had everything you could wish for and was clean and spacious, with a lovely view towards the mountains. The only thing lacking was an outside area to sit and enjoy a barbecue with the lovely view. The owners were friendly and helpful.

“Truly lovely” I can't recommend this cottage enough. If you like remote and comfortable this is for you. Not only is the cottage ideal with very good facilities and furnishings but the owners are warm and freindly without being in any way intrusive. The setting is perfect with views that change with the weather and time of day. We all loved it.

“Excellent stay at Smithy Cottage” We really enjoyed our stay at Smithy Cottage. The location for our requirements was excellent, as some of the party wanted to climb mountains and some wanted to stay local. All the facilities at the cottage were excellent. We had a meal at the pub down the road which again was excellent, and would certainly recommend this.

“No hesitations about recommending archers..” ... except it might get too busy to re-book it again! Having stayed in a different cottage for a number of happy visits to Keswick, my first stay in archers was a reluctant change - but i was more than satisfied, and look forward to returning if i ever have the opportunity to work in the Lakes again. Comfortable, cosy, well-equipped. Great location for being central to shops, but easy access for walks, cycling etc...

“What a great weekend” We went for a 40th birthday and took 16 friends along with us. The house was just great in every way. We enjoyed the space, the kitchen and its cupboards full of stuff, the jacuzzi and the massive lounge with roaring fire. I would recommend this for a great weekend getaway with friends or family. It's in a fabulous location right by the sea and very private. My only bug was it was cold but we did go in November! Would definitely go again.

“Great break after recent hospital treatment.” Good welcome pack in accommodation which was appreciated. The cottage was excellent for our requirements with a pet labrador. The location was well placed for touring Cumbria and the Lake District. Although we did not take advantage of the amenities they appeared well managed and very good. We liked the available walks through the valley especially with our dog. Although no doubt temporary ongoing contruction work made for very muddy conditions on the approach to the cottage. The settee was not the most comfortable for a weeks stay.

“A real little gem!” What a delightful little cottage, with absolutely all the amenities one could wish for, plus a host and hostess who couldn't do enough for us. The welcome cake and drinks were the icing on the cake. Location was fantastic, with so many activities and attractions within minutes of the cottage. Even the trip up to Beatrix Potter's home was not a long drive. Very happy to recommend this place to anyone wanting a nice little bolt hole".

“Great location in the centre of Grasmere village” Spacious and well fitted our, quality accommodation, ideal lake district cottage. We booked it for two adults, two teenagers and their Grandmother and it was perfect. Great to be restful after a good long walk, the walk to the tarn is a good start for those our of practice fell walkers too! The local co-op provides a good range of essentials and enough for meals when you,re not eating out. There are a number of good places to eat our, the small and homely bistro being just next door. We managed to see Wordsworth,s house, took a few long (and dry) walks , went to ambleside and Kendal and took a boat ride on Windermere. All in all a great place, great accommodation and a good holiday

“Fantastic Rental Cottage” We stayed at Swallow's nest for our anniversary in Sept 11. The interior was finished to a very high standard, it was like staying in a 5 star hotel. The kitchen was well equipped and we enjoyed buying the amazing produce of the lake district and cooking it up back at the cottage, enjoying the views as we ate. The location is good, close to Penrith town centre, and good transport links into the Lake District. The owners were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely come back.

Cottages and log cabins in the Lake District

If you're looking to experience the most magnificent natural scenery England has to offer, you can't go wrong with the Lake District. Book a rural retreat, like a charming cottage or log cabin, to really make the most of your time in this spectacular landscape.

Breathtaking natural beauty

The Lake District's lush fells and valleys are scattered with small villages; charming clusters of cottages in a landscape that hasn't changed in centuries. Why not choose a cozy cottage in one of these quiet rural communities as your base? Or a secluded log cabin to put you right in the heart of the area's natural beauty?

Explore the 16 lakes, meres and tarns scattered across the county and you'll see cottages nestled on the shore with unparalleled views over the water. But if you prefer the atmosphere and amenities of a market town, you're still spoiled for choice with picturesque options like Keswick, Ambleside and Penrith.

Things to do in the Lake District

If you're seeking the classic Lake District experience, head to Lake Windermere. Here, you can take a boat trip on the water while marveling at the magnificent peaks surrounding you. There are plenty of vacation homes dotted along the shore in pretty spots such as Bowness-on-Windermere.

Nearby Ullswater doesn't disappoint, either, with plenty of pebbled bays along the lakeside to stop for a picnic and skim some stones across the water. While you're there, don't miss the spectacular waterfalls of Aira Force; with ample parking and a variety of walks, it's the perfect place for a family trip.

Speaking of family trips, one of the most popular attractions is The World of Beatrix Potter. This center celebrates Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter and all the work she did to preserve the land and livelihood of the Lake District.

Inspiration

With its inspiring scenery, wealth of activities and relaxed pace of life, the Lake District is a fabulous staycation destination for families. Renting a cottage or log cabin gives you all the flexibility and space of your own home and sets you up perfectly to enjoy England's most picturesque landscape.

Why Cumbria?

Are you up for an outdoor adventure? Booking your vacation rental in Cumbria gives you the chance to make the most out of the rolling hills, stunning scenery and tranquil lakes. Pick yours today before they all go!

About Cumbria

On the northernmost point of England, Cumbria is one of the largest counties in the country. However, you won't find many built up areas here. Most of the landscape has been left untouched by developers and builders, and lets nature flourish within its borders.

With such an abundance of nature and peacefulness, it's no surprise that lots of artists and authors have come here to try their craft. William Wordsworth, John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and Ken Russell were all inspired by this magnificent area.

What to do

For something a little different, try the Predator Experience in Cartmel. Choose the creature or creatures you want to interact with and spend a day learning about them. There are bird of prey falconry days, reptile and mammal experiences and you can even go walking with wolves!

There are several waterfalls throughout this part of the Lake District, so why not climb up and see one? Aira Force in Penrith is spectacular.

The Dairy - Patterdale Hall
First time in Cumbria, won't be the last

Just back from a fantastic 7 night stay at The Dairy with my Husband and our 3 Trailhounds. Having struggled to find a cottage that was willing to take 3 dogs, The Diary could not have been more perfect. With no close neighbours I didn't have to worry about the occasional 'hound song' and the garden, although not fully enclosed, was enough to stop the dogs from escaping while giving them a good place to play. After a wet week, the fire was a godsend to help dry us and the clothing ou. The Dairy is warm and welcoming to come back to after a day of walking. The milk, tea, coffee and biscuits on arrival were much appreciated, and all Hall staff were really helpful - even though I always interrupted during dinner times (sorry). The loft bedroom is quirky, but adds to the overall charm of the property and the ladder is easier to navigate that I thought it would be, although I did end up sleeping downstairs with the dogs. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need and more.' This is a gem of a property and one I would love to come back to. The only down side is no internet and no phone signal, which you are aware of before booking, and which made us realise how much we rely on these. There's some great walks on the doorstep, and hats off the travellers rest pub for great food and being brave (and tolerant) enough to let 3 hounds into the bar. Thank you to everyone for a super holiday.see more
Twazabarn - near the Lake District and Dales National Parks - Sleeps up to 6
Our first experience of booking through FlipKey was absolutely fantastic - Twazabarn was spectacular.

From the moment of our arrival Carole was the perfect hostess. She was warm and friendly, she explained the workings of her cottage in detail and was easily accessible for the one problem we had. The cottage had everything we could wish for and was perfect for our party of 4 seniors. It was in immaculate order and very tastefully furnished. It was a very good base for exploring the area, close to the township but totally quiet at night. The township had much to explore and the locals were all friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend this cottage - it was warm and cosy and the wood heater made for great ambience. No complaints at all..see more
