What a beautiful cabin exactly on the lake with fantastic view of the Fjord! Very well equipped and clean with a wonderful owners. You can easily walk to flam port or just hiking around Flam.

I recommend all to stay here instead of hotels where you will be able to cook your own food which we did.

Nicely appointed with a breathtaking view

Left on 01/27/2013 for a stay in June 2012

Two of us stayed almost a week. Very central for day trips. Less than a five minute walk to shopping. The kitchen has everything you may need. Most all the rooms face the Fjord,it's a sight to see. the renter is very attentive, most everything is relatively new and as with the rest of Norway, very clean. We couldn't have been more pleased. Highly reecommended!

Left on 01/26/2013 for a stay in August 2012

Sue and anders were so welcoming and helpful. We wanted to hike the old post road from Bakke and anders contacted Svein Tufte for a boat ride across the fjord. It was a perfect day that we highly recommend. The cottage was perfect with everything we needed. It was easy to get to Flam and the surrounding areas for great hiking. We highly recommend Fretheim Fjordhytter Cottages.

      surpassing my wildest expectations

Left on 01/25/2013 for a stay in September 2012

After having carried around a cutting of a review of this cottage that had appeared in the 'Telegraph' some years ago, we were full of expectation when we finally booked our stay for September last. The whole booking process was easy, thanks to helpful correspondence with anders/Sue. When we arrived, it was a pleasure to drive up to the Fretheim's house (what a spectacular spot) to meet Sue, who could not have been more charming, and who then came down to the cottage with us to show us in.

Everythings inside was impeccable. Spotlessly clean, so well equipped - could not think of one single thing lacking - warm and welcoming. And what a position right on the fjord!

Would consider this an ideal spot for either those of a more active bent; or equally for those who want to relax and lose themselves in the beauty of this spot in Flaam.

We were largely content just to sit and marvel at the scenery from the picture window, right on the water, making friends with the ducks we fed from the little balcony area.

Could not recommend this place more highly; and dream of maybe going back one day

A peaceful retreat in beautiful Flam

Left on 01/25/2013 for a stay in September 2012

We spent three peaceful days in one of the four Fretheim Fjordhytter holiday cottages. Anders Fretheim kindly met us at the station and drove us the sort distance to the cottage, giving us local information as we went. It was one of the prettiest holiday locations that I've experienced. Painted in traditional Norwegian dark red with white trimmings, the cottages perch almost over the water, right at the top end of the fjord. It is so beautiful that it is tempting to sink into one of the comfortable leather couches in the sitting room and gaze through the full length windows at the ever-changing moods of the snow-topped mountains and the water--mists, rainbows, sunshine--and the variety of craft (everything from fishing boats to cruise ships) that use the fjord. The cottages are attractively and comfortably furnished with pine interiors and equipped with all that one needs for self-catering. They are only a ten minute walk from the little village of Flam and a good base for longer walks or a journey on the Flamsbana railway.

      Fantastic!

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in October 2012

The cottages are beautifully set up, in a stunning area, opening directly onto the fjord. It's quite the view to see when you open your curtains first thing in the morning!

Sue and anders were very helpful when we needed them, and left us to enjoy ourselves when we didn't, which is exactly what we wanted.

We went out of season, but the local supermarket and the pub/restaurant were both open and provided adequately for our needs. The pub was a bit expensive, but the food was good, as was the locally-made beer!

As we were out of season, there was only one boat per day, which goes out down the next fjord along. It only sails once per day, so you need to catch a bus back from Gudvangen to make it a day trip. Worth doing - took dozens of pictures along the boat trip.

The cottage itself was well equipped for self-catering, and the electric heaters kept the place nice and warm. The log burner was also very welcome in the cold evenings!

      wonderful family holiday

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in August 2012

We had a wonderful week in one of the Fretheim cottages - my husband and I and our three teenage boys. The chalet was very comfortable with breathtaking views. Highlights were taking the train up the valley and cycling back, our boat trip into the Narrow Fjord, visiting the largest glacier in Europe, going out on our little boat, and just relaxing in the chalet in the evenings.
Anders and Sue were very welcoming and helpful. We would highly recommend this holiday for families or couples wanting a beautiful place to relax.

      Splendid is the word...

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in October 2012

We are a family of four and we booked the house in October when autumn was slowly submitting to Winter's majesty...which means we had sun and the beginning of the week and snow at the end so it was rather magical. We had a wonderful time as the house is so well thought out, so warm and really well located as you have seclusion while at the same time being next to Flam, which is quite a tourist village and has a lot of life. A car is essential to explore the surrounding area and a drive through the longest tunnel in the world (24,5 klms) is an experience! But for nature lovers, for those who like barbecue while overlooking the watery expanse of the fjord, to rent some bicycles and take off or take the little outboard boat and head down to the neighboring town, then this is a holiday you will both enjoy and remember. As for anders, he is a lovely and hospitable man who will be there with a smile and all the help you need (especially if you can't start the boat because you didn't put the starting pin in the outboard motor) All in all, if its Norway you are thinking of going to, book this holiday home.

      Excellent holiday experience and hosts

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in June 2013

Excellent large, modern, well equiped cottages with stunning views, plenty of room for six, boat with outboard, plenty of walks nearby. (We took the train up to Myrdal and walked back down the valley -- about 12 miles downhill)

With self catering , cheap flights to Bergen and motoring hire costs (almost ) reasonable it is possible to have a holiday in Norway without facing bankruptcy. We thought the cottage was priced fairly. I would recommend having a hire car. If you like a drink stock up at the UK duty free -- and yes it is worth taking wine as there is no off-license in Flam. It is possible to buy beer (not wine or spirits) locally at supermarkets and there is a fantastic but expensive micro- brewery in Flam.

Many thanks anders and Sue -- who are there when you need them and unobtrusive the rest of the time. Anders' family has owned the farm overlooking Flam for generations.

It was a bit messy and expensive to make the bank transfers for the payment (although anders deducted our transfer costs off the bill). Sue said that she was looking at alternative methods .

We spent time in Oslo , caught the good value train (a top ten world trip) to Bergen , spent some days there then hired a car for a week at Flam. We found reasonable self catering flats in Oslo and Bergen and had a relaxing fortnight in towns and country. V cheap flights available to and from Oslo and Bergan through Norwegian airlines if you book well in advance.

Although the weather is variable every-one should visit Norway at least once to discover the almost unique scenery. We went in June and there was still snow on the high mountains. There are great car local trips. In summer the days are long and although Flam is busy when the cruise liners are in it's very easy to escape the hustle and bussle by walking or driving a few miles. If it does rain and or get cool the cottages are great places to stay with modern woodburner and fantastic views over the port, fjord and mountains.

      Stunning place

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in August 2012

We stayed at the cottage with our two daughters of 8 and 10. We were welcomed by anders who was very helpful and patiently answering all our queries. Once entering the cottage we were faced by this incredible view overlooking the fjord. The real gem for the girls was the little boat that came with the house, they couldn't wait to get in and start rowing. We tried fishing with the fishing line provided but I guess we didn't have the skill. On a short walk to the center part of Flam we found abundance of tourist shops, bicycle hire, all boat excursions and a small supermarket. The variety of food in the supermarket is limited and it's advisable to shop in the bigger supermarkets in the nearest towns.
The next morning we woke up to this view of a gigantic cruise ship right across the bay. When we walked to the center we found that the thousands of people that poured out of the ship dispersed everywhere and weren't felt or caused any inconvenience to us, on the contrary it was interesting to meet different people.
We found the area extraordinarily beautiful for hiking and you needn't travel far for these great walks some which are at your doorstep. We hired bikes and rode up the valley starting from Flam center and had the most gorgeous scenery doing basically the train ride on the bike.
To sum up, there are unlimited options for hiking in the area; the house itself is very conveniently placed with amazing views and good facilities. We had one of our best holidays here and would definitely recommend it.

Stunning scenery, comfortable quarters and hospitable hosts...a

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in July 2012

Sue and anders have set up the most perfect little cottages with everything you need for a self-catering holiday. And they are the loveliest hosts for whom no job is too big or too small. From providing suggestions for trout fishing spots for my husband to providing tips on the best places to eat. The beds were warm and cosy and plenty of room for all 4 of us to bed down comfortably plus we had a bedroom left over. The kids loved the DVD player in the evenings and we loved the CD player after they were tucked up in bed. It was handy having a washing machine. We loved having the freedom of heading out in our little motorboat to find picnic spots for lunches or to just pootle about. There are only superlatives available to describe the scenery in and around Flam. It is breathtaking, gorgeous, superb and more. We drove to beauty spots, we took boat trips, we hired bikes and we took the mountain railway. The town centre is a stroll away and has all the supermarkets, gift shops, cafes and restaurants you need. Do just check opening times for supermarkets and ensure you know where the nearest petrol station is located. One of the best things about our cottage was the view from the sitting room-it was difficult to start cooking sometimes because the view was so mesmerising.

      Stunning location.Beautiful cottage.Horribly touristy.

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in May 2012

The cottages are beautifully located. We did not see the owners. There are two minor criticisms of the cottages. The kitchen was barely equipped for six and there was no information where to buy food or recommendations where to eat etc.But...
We will never visit again during the tourist season. The huge cruise ships coming in daily obliterate the view and flood the village with tourists who walk past the cottages taking photographs constantly.Flam turns into a Disney like attraction to cater for this mass influx of visitors. Our agent advised us wrongly assuring us that as we were visiting low season we might see just a couple of ships. On most days there was one if not two.If anyone is using Norsc Holidays they are pretty useless not listening to what we wanted and giving us what turned out to be false information.

Response from Sue and Anders Fretheim - 01/24/2013

      Sue and Anders Fretheim

      Owner

      Hi Sue,
Thank you for your constructive review. Our apologies for not getting to meet you, I realize that it is no excuse but sometimes things get a bit out of hand on the farm in the spring with calving etc and not everything goes to plan ?. I will also make sure there is more crockery etc for 6 persons, it is not very often we have 6 staying so it is good to get some feed back in regard to this. I have also taken note of your wish for more recommendations of where to eat etc. We normally would do this when meeting guests so once again, sorry.
As to your comments about the cruise ships, I have sent your review to the local newspaper in the effort to get the local authorities to realize that they must begin to refuse the number of ships coming to Flåm. The numbers of ships in the past couple of years have increased dramatically here as in the rest of Norway and without restrictions will ruin the village of Flåm. Please don’t blame Norsc Holidays as they were most likely not aware of the increase. Flåm is still a beautiful place that is very central for day visits in the area and some days are probably better than others for taking a day trip out of Flåm.
We are so sorry that your holiday was not as pleasant as you had hoped.
      Kind regards,
      Sue (and Anders)

We stayed in Flam with our two children (aged 12 and 7). The cabin was extremely clean and very comfortable and cosy. Norway is beautiful but it does rain. Therefore, having wifi and satellite TV was useful for the times when you stayed home. Having the boat was fantastic. We used it most days and the children loved this experience. We found lots of interesting things to do in Flam. We loved the walking and the town centre had a good supermarket and a couple of cafes.

They were a perfect place to go home to after a day or sightseeing. The kitchen had everything you need for the light cooking we did. The location is beautiful by the water surrounded by mountains. I can't say enough about the beauty of the location. Loved it- and hoping to go back! I would highly recommend.

Left on 01/12/2013 for a stay in July 2012

The cottage (no. 1) was tasteful, comfortable and well-equipped, with great views of the fjord and Flam. Anders met us at the cottage and was very helpful and friendly. He took us out in the little boat to show us how to use the motor, and we had great fun taking it out during the week. Flam has a small supermarket and a Viking-styled pub with its own microbrewery serving excellent if expensive beer. We didn't have a car and didn't feel the need for one. There are very good buses, plus boats and the Flamsbana railway, and lovely walks up the valley. We made it to the Borgund Stave church by bus, Undredal (the goats cheese is delicious) by bus+walk+boat, and best of all was the trip by bus to Gudvangen to get the boat to Laerdal (a 3-hour 'cruise') where we enjoyed the old town and wild salmon centre before catching the bus back to Flam. We spent 3 nights in Oslo before our week in Flam, and 4 nights in Bergen afterwards, all-in-all a great fortnight in Norway.

We had a wonderful few days at the end of our travels in Norway, relaxing in one of the Fretheim cottages before taking the amazing train journey to Myrdal and then down to Oslo. With stunning panaromic views of the fjord and flam - and the wood fire to keep us warm in the evening (September) we couldn't have had a more relaxing holiday. The hosts were wonderful, and the cottage a delight, just a short stroll to the shops in Flam but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet. Wish we could have stayed longer.

It was a wonderful stay, mind blowing views as you woke up each morning, peaceful and relaxing. The cottage was everything it said it would be, clean, comfortable, had everything we might need. The Fretheims couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. The location was perfect - 5 minutes walk from Flam, so quiet and tranquil, yet Flam had amenities to offer and being a cruise ship port, had plenty of trips and tours to sign up for if that's what you like. Being right on the fjord was amazing and having our own little boat a fabulous bonus - but remember to take your waterproofs as the weather was unpredictable. Would definitely recommend a stay here if you want to see a bit of Norway.

You know a place is great when you feel sad to leave

Left on 06/28/2012 for a stay in June 2012

Ok let me get the negatives out of the way first. Flam is a cruise ship destination with tacky gift shops and overpriced restaurants. The local grocery is sub-adequate and the nearest good grocery store is a 1/2 day trek. Despite all that the week we spent at Fretheim Fjordjhytter (hytter = cabin) was one of the best vacation weeks our family has ever had. You need a rental car to truly experience the region. The cabin is set back away from the tacky stuff and is completely comfortable and clean with a drop dead view of the fjord. The small motor boat which comes with the cabin was a blast (even when a goat came aboard when we beached on a remote spit). This is a destination for people who love to be out in nature. We boated, hiked, biked, drove on amazing road above the timberline and visited ancient churches and villages. The owners, Anders and Sue, are wonderful down to earth people (Anders family has been there since the middle ages).

Our stay was a rare treat for the senses - visually, the captivating widescreen view from the lounge and master bedroom, of the majestic aurlandsfjord and snow-capped mountains; the sound of the ever-present, soothing soundtrack of clear, clean water lapping on the shore below; the smell and touch of the wonderfully crafted interior.

Beyond, within easy walking distance, are the many attractions of Flam, of which a half day kayaking,a day hiking in Flamsdalen and a Naeroyfjord cruise were our personal highlights. There's a well-stocked local food shop for bringing back supplies to cook in the cottage's fully equipped kitchen area. The cottage's washing machine was extremely handy, meaning we didnt need to pack masses of clothes. There was also plenty of useful information on hand from the friendly and welcoming owners about the cottage and the range of activities available in the locale.

By the end of the week, we were totally captivated by the whole experience and can't wait to sample the delights of Flam again, hopefully from the welcoming comfort and tranquillity of the fjordhytter.

It was my wife and I traveling by car on an 8 month Europe trip. Our stay in a Flam cottage was a highlight of our trip. The cottage is totally equiped with everything you could think of.
This is the perfect area to explore the fiords both by car and boat, which we did.

The cottage/cabin was very comfortable the views across the fjord were outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble for Sue and anders, from picking us up from the railway station to fuel for the log stove and dinghy. Both were extremely friendly and spoke excellent English - as do most Norwegians - although Sue is from down under!. Chill for a while, watch the ships and tourists or take to the water, or go for a hike. Our stay was thoroughly enjoyable.

The chalet was beautiful, the views were unbelievable. We loved our holiday and the cruise liners were a strangly pleasing attraction. We looked forward to seeing which liner had arrived each day. We loved the boat and enjoyed several trips to aurland. The snow road was delightful. Our children are 9 and 10 and it was an ideal family location. Sue and anders were good hosts.
Weather was sunny and the rain the previous week created wonderful waterfalls all over Flam

Their kindness and helpfulness of Sue and anders cannot be surpassed, they are certainly the most gracious and knowledgeable of hosts and we could not have been made any more welcome. On arrival we were met at the station and after settling in we were offered home made apple juice, we were also given muppets and a jig to help us fish and all the information and help we needed for the best treat of all, the motor boat. Our hosts took the time to make our stay that bit special and a trip down the fjord with Sue and anders in the powerboat was the icing on the cake for a birthday treat! The cottage was clean, peaceful and well equipped and the location of the cottage quite stunning, every day the reflections, the light and the changing views down the fjord were like new paintings on the wall. The majestic cruise ships called in to Flam but the supermarket managed to cope admirably. We walked up to Prest in shorts and a t shirt to find it was snowing on the top! We also, cycled, fished, went out in the motorboat with our picnic, sunbathed on the balcony, took boat trips from Flam and had a fantastic holiday soaking up Norway in all its beauty. You could not go wrong staying here if you love excellent self catering and beautiful countryside.

We had a brlliant stay, thank you. The views were absolutely amazing and we never tired of looking at it. Interior was great, we had everything we needed and whilst not luxurious, the cottage was really well equiped and very comfortable.
The boat was a really nice touch.
The walking was great, with some great routes and we were really lucky to have a few really nice days weather wise.
Flam itself only had a few pubs and restaurants, so we tended to eat in a lot - which just meant we had more time to admire the views. The microbrewery was great though, and you could buy take away beer or stay in and get a limited choice of great, local food. Definately worth trying. All in all an amazing holiday.

Flam holiday cottages are a hidden gem, spectacular views and comfortable stay. Check in and out was disappointing, as Sue has arranged to pick us up at train, but quickly gave up on us, leaving us waiting and searching for over an hour. Same on way out, we were told we could check out at ten, but 930 there was the knock on the door, hurryong us out. Would rather not be promised the extra service, that to be let down. Apart from that, the time in between was heavenly.

      Nice time in Flåm

Left on 07/19/2011 for a stay in April 2011

Flåm is a lovely spot. Plenty of walks, pretty location, train ride, bikes and best beer brewery in Norway.
The cabins are perched on water's edge and very, very, very pretty location. Loved it so much we have recommended to friends and we know that they have stayed and enjoyed also. You have to see to believe.
Only drawback of the stay was the difference that Fretheim use for rates compared to majority of other cabins in Norway. Payment is per person rather than per cabin. This caught us out as we had a surprise extra and owners implied we had done deliberately and then over-charged us to compensate.

Owners also implied were not competent with use of the fireplace. One might say a "quirky" response from the host. But overall left us feeling not comfortable.

But not enough to stop us enjoying and recommending the location. Unique in Norway and that *is* saying something. Perhaps only better is Lofoten!

We were greeted by anders upon our arrival by Flam Railway into Flam. Anders was very welcoming, showing us around the cabin as well as how to operate the complimentary motor boat. We stayed for 3 nights and we wish we had a week there - we will definitely be back. It was so serene looking over the fjord and hearing the fjord water lap against the bottom of the cabin at night. We brought some of our food, bought little food necessaries at the coop which was a short walk from the cabin, as well as ate dinner two nights at the big hotel there which was delicious (and we are NY foodies). We were in Norway for a couple of weeks and this was our favorite place we stayed by far. We rented bikes up in Myrdal and spent a day biking down the trail back to Flam (highly recommended for experienced bikers/hikers). We also took the motor boat to aurland one day which was a lot of fun - as well as biked to a nearby historical village up on the mountain halfway between aurland and Flam. The last day, we took the fjord1 ferry down the entire fjord around to Gundvagen -which was beyond awe inspiring (if a bit chilly). We just loved staying at Sue and anders perfect cabins - they are such a welcomed treat from the commercialism that is traveling. We can't wait to go back with our kids one day. Thank you Sue and anders!

When we arrived at Flam after an extensive journey through Norway we could not believe our eyes. The fjord views from our accommodation were quite staggering. This was the perfect place to spend a fe days relaxing before resuming our travels. The accommodation was of a very high standard and our friendly hosts could not have been more helpful and obliging. Also we were greatly impressed by the efficiency with which the flow of tourists from rail to ferry was managed at Flam. Despite the large numbers of pople passing through the area we were never troubled or inconvenienced. It obviously helps that the guest accommodation is slightly removed from the centre of tourist activity but still conveniently near the essential facilities. We have no hesitation in recommending this venue to anyone who wishes to have a relaxing experience of Norway's stunning fjord environment.

      Idyllic fjord-side hytte

Left on 10/14/2010 for a stay in August 2010

A great holiday. Alison and I had visited Flam in 1983 as part of an Interrail holiday; as poor students we had stayed in the campsite but we loved the location and the Flamsbahn and have always wanted to revisit. Flam has changed a little in the intervening 27 years, and we have acquired two teenage sons. We found Sue and anders extremely welcoming hosts and the hytte was both comfartable and well-equipped. Having our own dinghy to muck about in the fjord was fantastic and the boys enjoyed buzzing the giant cruise ships across the harbour. There are some great walks such as up to the local waterfall and since the arrival of the road tunnel Flam also makes a good base to visit Bergen and the stavkyrke at Borgund. We also had a brilliant return trip to Finse, going up on the train and then hiring mountain bikes and cycling the 50km back down. The vertical hairpin section in the final few miles was great fun, but you definitely need a helmet! - not supplied by the bike hire so bring your own.
Flam is small but has a few places to eat and as a keen beer maker (and beer drinker) I can definitely recommend the microbrewery. There's also a small supermarket so its perfectly easy to self cater at the hytte.
Maybe we'll come back again in another 27 years...

We had a realy wonderful weeks holiday in a Fretheim Fjordhytter. Anders met us at the railway station and took us to the cottage. He could not have been more welcoming or helpful. When our boys (aged 10 and 13) mentioned that they would like to try fishing in the Fjiord he immediatly went off and came back with 2 fishing rods which he lent to us for the week!. He took the time to take us out on the Fjiord to thoroghly demonstrate how to use the boat. We had some wonderful trips out on the boat including round to
aurland. The scenerey including the view from the cottage is amazing and costantly changing. We went on some great walks including all the way down the Flam valley.(take the train up). Also reccomend a trip up the Narrow Fjiord. The cottage is delightful, peaceful, clean, spacious and well equipt. This was our first visit to Norway but it will not be our last . The Norwegian people we met were all charming and very helpful. Our only complaint is that the time past so quickly! Before we knew it anders was taking us and our bags round to the harbour for us to continue our jouney. We were very sad to say goodbye and hope to retturn very soon.

We were looking forward to our holiday long before we arrived because Sue and anders were welcoming from first email contact.

We were not disapointed on arrival, the view is breath-taking, you need not go anywhere else whilst staying here. I cannot fault the cottage and the view.

If being picky, the marina nextdoor did have one night of very, very noisey country and western music, which went into the early hours...the marina also has one yellow pedalo and Flam has a Noddy train (so try and turn a blind eye to these)

Flam is a busy hub when the cruise Ship arrives but I bet that they are all wishing they were staying at your cottage. The vessel was always gone in the afternoon.

      Go... its great!

We have always wanted to visit Norway and booked this cabin as it looked like the perfect place for a relaxing break. It was exactly that and was as lovely as it looks in the pictures! The view from the cabin was amazing, the cabin has everything you need and the centre of Flam (very small) is only a 5 minute walk to stock up on supplies. Anders met us from the boat and check in was simple (a quick run through of how everything works). The log burner was a bonus - particularly to dry off from the rain :) as was the little boat that we used to explore the Fjord and nearby aurland. In summary a lovely cabin in an amazing location, perfect for a relaxing (or adventurous) getaway.

We have enjoyed our stay for one week in Fjordhytter Cottage. Nice view from the living room. Comfortable cottages are located in quiet place, the road that one can find going very close from Google maps is not in the use.
Anders was so kind that met us on arrival and helped us to take our luggage to the train when we were leaving.
We have rented a kayakk in advance at Njord (www.kajakk.com, ph.: +47 913 26 628) and went from Flam to Gudvangen. Distance is about 25-30 kilometers. It took two days vithout a hurry. There are very spectacular views on this route.
There are several routes for hiking - we took short one from Fossheim (1 km from aurland) to Hogasen via Turli (the detailed map one can buy at the desk of tourist info office). The height there is 840 m and show very good view of Sognefjord. At that time there was very strong wind. It is possible to get there by car but it is not so interesting and the road sometimes is very narrow - for one car only.
      Good place and interesing stay.

The instructions to Sue and anders' farm were excellent and we were escorted to our cabin by anders who was very welcoming and helpful about all the facilities. The approach to the cabins is delightful and well looked after. Anders gave us a few suggestions of what we could do during our our stay - or not do! As anders said we could just stay in the cabin and let "the world come to us" ! I can recommend the snow road up to the look out bridge, but it is a hairy drive at times!
The cabin is very comfortable and has everything you need - apart from, perhaps, a visitors book for comments. The view from the living room is just breath taking and fills the room with light. The fjord is an ever changing backdrop. We spent a lot of our time just relaxing, reading and looking out of the window - lifeboat drill from the cruise liners was quite entertaining!
If you like a glass or two of wine in the evening, then stock up at a Vinmonopolet before arriving in Flam. The supermarket across the fjord is good for basics, but if you can, shop before you arrive.
Overall, we had a fantastic stay in a gorgeous location.

This was an excellent option for staying in Flam. The cottage itself was very clean and had a full kitchen with utensils and cookware. Eating on the cheap was easy with the local grocery store (make sure you know the hours). The boat was fun to use too. The only potential difficulty was the check-in process. It was unclear to us how to get into the cabin at first. We had to ask the guests in an adjacent cabin to phone the owner (we didn't have a cell phone) to tell us where the key was. Aside from that hiccup, the experience was excellent. Highly recommended.

Everything was wonderful. The cottage itself, so pretty and cosy ( and so clean, by the way..), with a fabulous view over the Fjord. And the location. Perfect.
You can stay here to enjoy the peacefulness and the beauty of the surroundings, or choose between many activities like a trip on the Flambana or a cruise on the Sognefjord for exemple.
Anyway, it is a stay we hardly recommend if you are visiting the area. As for us, we are looking forward to come back as soon as possible .

A fantastic stay in a gorgeous setting

Left on 06/29/2010 for a stay in April 2010

We spent 1 week in Flam in april of this year and stayed at one of the Fretheim Fjordhytter Holiday Cottages. The village was quite quiet at this time of year which suited us and we were very fortunate to have a run of sunny weather whilst we were there.

We arrived with 2 children aged 4 and 3 (and a 7 month pregnant wife!) after 6pm and the supermarket was shut but Sue kindly fetched us some supplies from the farm for our dinner! The cottage was lovely - a wonderful setting over the fjord with picture postcard views. Very comfortable too with all we needed and a boat which anders showed us how to use.

We spent an idyllic few days exploring the area by boat, on foot and we also hired a car too for a day. The area is simply one of the most beautiful areas we have ever been to reminding us of the South Island of New Zealand!

As we were leaving, we were unfortunately caught up in the volcanic ash problems and our flight from Bergen to London was cancelled. We had to take a ferry to Denmark, then a train through Germany to Holland and a further ferry back to the UK. Sue and anders were so helpful in trying to help us sort things out and the Tourist Office in Flam was very helpful too. We look back on our trip home as a bit of an adventure really but it could have been much more stressful without their help.

We had a wonderful stay in Flam staying at the Fretheim Fjordhytter Holiday Cottages and meeting Sue and anders and would strongly recommend the cottages to anyone visiting the area.

      pieceful and picturesque vacation

Left on 06/08/2010 for a stay in April 2010

We enjoyed the vacation spend in Fretheim Fjordhytter greatly. the check in was late at night and there were no problems to get into the cottage. driving directions were given precisely. the condition of the cottage was brilliant: clean bed lining, all necessary kitchen and toilet staff. The view was gorgeous: mountaions, fjord, water and the nearest city night lights. the boat was ok, a little bit slow, but we managed to swim far to the very Sognefjord. the destionation to Bergen is close thus, do not miss a chance to visit this wonderful city as well. Make a round trip - it is worth it! The hosts Sue and anders were so hospitable and nice to give advice with the fishing and excursions. We did not stay a single day in the cottage, only did cooking in the open fire grilling salmon or barbecue. Thanks a lot for the splendid week spend in Norway.

The welcome and 'run through' after a 3.5 hour car journey with gradually tiring 5 and 2 year old was warm and full. We were quickly left alone to enjoy our time in an idyllic spot perched on the edge of the fjord.

The hut had everything we needed and the use of a small boat was very welcome. If we needed anything at all (such as smaller life jackets and fishing lines) it was provided without fuss and very quickly.

I cannot think of anything detrimental to say about the property - it ticked every box and bsides, you expect it to be different from what you are used to; after all isn't that rather the point of going away in the first place?

Comfortable, clean, well equipped and beautifully located, we spent 5 happy days here before awaying to glaciers and mountains.

One of the best places I have ever stayed!!!

Left on 04/15/2010 for a stay in April 2010

I cannot recommend the Fretheim Fjordhytter cottages highly enough!!! They are set in one of the most idyllic locations in the world and Sue and Anders were the perfect hosts! The view over the fjord is spectacular!!! The cottage is well equipped, very clean and quite spacious. Having access to their row boat with a small outboard motor was brilliant too (you will probably have to pay a small fee if you're not staying for a week but it's well worth it)! Maybe take a hand reel and do a spot of fishing (or arrange to borrow one there). It was very relaxing ... even though we didn't catch anything! I can also highly recommend hiring a bike from the very friendly and helpful tourist information office and cycling up to the Flåm church and to Brekkefossen waterfall. The walk up to the waterfall is a little steep in places but is well worth the effort to get an amazing view over Flåm. The train trip to/from Myrdal/Flåm on the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is a must do too! If we'd had more time, I would've loved to have done it a second time and walked down from Myrdal to Flåm (although this is a very long walk, so it may not be suitable for everyone). This is the absolute ideal place to just chill, relax and do nothing OR if you're the adventurous type, you can spend many hours hiking, riding, walking, fishing, kayaking etc. The only fault with our trip is that we didn't have enough time to explore everything and we went slightly out of season, so quite a few activities weren't running or were limited! Even so, it was one of the best holidays I've ever had!!!

I am reluctant to write this review as it may mean that a secret and perfect hideaway becomes known about.

Sue and Anders are perfect hosts, so much so that due to them and the lovely accomodation we have visited every year for the last few years.

The weather is sometimes great, sometimes bad, but the scenery and location always wonderful.

We have seen Flam grow in recent years and it has got busier, so try it slightly out of season to make the most of it.

The cafe only 5mins walk away now has wifi...which was the only downside (both workaholics).

When we arrived after all the stores and restaurants were closed (be aware...everything closes I think by 8:00), the owners were so kind and let us borrow some food until we could repay them back the next day. These four cottages are right on the water and although next to each other, still have great privacy. The home was very clean and very nice. We loved being right on the water and watching nature and the big boats coming and going. We fell in love with this area of Norway! This cottage was our favorite accomodation of our entire two week European tour. The owners were so wonderful and helpful. We hope to make it back there someday!

We stayed in cottage number 4 for one week in August 2009 and there’s only one thing we can say: It was PERFECT.
The cottage itself was very comfortable, the rooms were clean and the view from the window and from the veranda was fantastic. Although Flam with its busy cruise ship harbour, train station and shops is only a short walk away, the cottage is absolutely peaceful and quiet. And if you want to get near the ‘luxury liners’, you can use the rowing boat with a small outboard motor, which is included in the price. Even swimming is possible, as a small beach is quite near the house as well as some rocks, from which you can jump into the fjord.
Sue and Anders were very friendly and helpful and showed us everything we needed to know.
We will certainly be coming back some day and can recommend this place without hesitation.

Unforgettable holiday on a Norwegian fjord

Left on 02/05/2010 for a stay in July 2008

In the summer of 2008, 6 of us ranging in ages from 12 to over 50 rented 2 of the Fretheim Fjordhytter Holiday cottages in Flam. We were blown away by the position - perched upon a fjord with amazing views from each window reaching from the chill shimmering water to the majestic mountain tops. The cabins were immaculate, modern and well-equipped. Even the gardens around the cottages were full of beautifully coloured flowers and unique wildlife. Each cabin had a rowing boat which we used and even did a little fishing - in the light of day- at midnight!! We couldn't believe the length of the summer days and neverending daylight. Our trip from Sydney Australia was an adventure in itself, completed by the train caught from Bergen. We journeyed through picturesque mountains, past waterfalls, groves of trees and small townships. The Fretheims were fantastic hosts - picking us up and dropping us at the station and were very generous with their time and knowledge. The cabins are near the town centre where we shopped for food and souvenirs and hired bikes for a relaxing ride around the countryside and historic parts of town. We took some lovely walks and drives into the mountains, visiting a salmon farm, goat cheese manufacturer, Norwegian Stave church and beautiful "snow road". We also took a tour cruise up the fjord where we viewed the towering mountains and visited more character-steeped townships. We were sorry we had to depart as we had barely scratched the surface of Norwegian culture and lifestyle. We reminisced about the blissful calm of Norway upon entering the stressful hustle-bustle of metropolitan Europe as the next stage of our trip. While we are all keen to return, my 18 year old son particularly loved the flora and fauna and amazing landscapes of mountain sides. The website's pictures cannot do justice to the scale of majesty and vibrant landscape so unlike anything we Australians have experienced.

My husband and I rented this cottage for 4 days. It's cute and modern and
clean. The best part of the house is the bank of windows facing the fjord. You
can look down it and see no civilization -- just gorgeous scenery. Tour boats
do come through this fjord to dock and are entertaining to watch as they
approach. The cottage is about a 5 minute walk into the town. When in town
pick up one of the locally made apple pies at the market. The best part of the
stay was enjoying the view. Overall, a very relaxing place to holiday.

We stayed in one of the cottages in Flam with our French friends for three nights- there were two families with one boy each (2.5 and 4 years old). We found the accomodation very comfortable and the view from the window amazing. We were lucky as the weather was very nice what is not very usual in the first days of May. We explored most of the attractions of the region: a boat trip to Gudvanger, a train trip and car trip to Aurlandsfjord. We did also several fishing and sightseeing trips on the fiord by the boat that belongs to Fretheim Fjordhytter. We found the owners Sue and Anders very helpful with everything we needed. In my oppinion Fretheim Fjordhytter offer a great location, very good standard and unforgettable view- it all makes a stay there an incredible experience. We will be coming to Flam again with our foreign friends soon!

It will be hard to say anything negative about this place. The cottage, the location and the service is all positive. It's a place where everything you need is there. The cottage and the linnen were very clean, you don't have to bring anything, everything is in the house. It is a popular place for tourists but you don't have problems accourding to noice or crowded people. The motorboat included in the rent was for our boys and us a very nice and amusing thing, we had splendid ours with it, even when we had some problems with the starting of it the owner was only a phonecall away, he came instantly. Later in the week he even brought us fresh fish. Really a place to go back in the future. Sunny days in Flåm

Left on 01/28/2010 for a stay in June 2009

Fretheim Fjordhytter are lovely cabins, spacious, well appointed, with helpful and friendly hosts. The location is excellent - it's quiet nearby but you can watch the activity on the other side of the fjord where ferries and cruise ships tie up. Good for sitting out in the evening sun with a barby and a glass of something chilled.

Flåm itself is sleepy except when cruise ships are in and their passengers are rushing around trying to see everything. The shops and railway are close enough to walk to comfortably. The next town has bigger shops. A walk up the river valley is gentle and pleasant. And of course there's the railway!

In the cabin we used (and the others are probably similar), one bedroom is on the ground floor and two upstairs. Only the master bedroom upstairs has a really good fjord view, but this doesn't matter because the sitting and dining areas are comfortable with good views, and that's where you'll spend your time.

The stairs up to the top two bedrooms are a shade narrow and windy, and might worry people with wobbly legs; but this is not a problem if you use the downstairs bedroom for anybody who might be unhappy about the stairs.

      Overall: thoroughly excellent, totally recommended.

The owners were very easy to deal with by email from the US. We were able to walk to the cottage from the transportation hub in Flam in about 10 minutes. We arrived by bus and left by train. The home was clean and very convenient. Anders greated us and answered all of our questions. He took me out in the boat to make sure I was familiar with its operation. The weather was overcast and rainy much of the time (worst feature), but the rain allowed us to see all of the waterfalls gushing at very impressive levels (the best feature).

One caution - The local coop store (the primary food store for people walking from the cottage) was open rather limited hours, so we needed to pay attention and get supplies before it closed. Once there, however, it had everything we needed.

After several days of sightseeing on the fjord and in the town of Flam, we especially enjoyed cooking and then eating a meal in front of a fire blazing in the stove. We will long remember the amazing view across the fjord to the mountainsides.

Left on 01/26/2010 for a stay in August 2009

This is perfect for a family wanting to self cater in a relaxing environment. There is plenty of space for all members of the family to be together in the lounge or to spread out - in the spacious hall, balcony or shared grass area- we've revisited with both old and young family members. There is a small beach where our children enjoyed playing and swimming (though the water was cool). The boat was invaluable for exploring the fjord. The cottage is separate from Flam (which can be very busy with tourists during the daytime) and so is very quiet, but, because Flam is only a short, flat walk away, it is easy to enjoy the shops, catch the spectacular Flam railway, or take the ferry to Gudvangen (another beautiful trip). There are numerous things to do in Flam - and there are good road links to other parts of Norway. Sue and Anders are always extremely welcoming and helpful in every way.

      And the owner is nice:)

      Beautiful and memorable holiday

Left on 01/25/2010 for a stay in June 2008

We enjoyed a spectacular holiday with easy access to wonderful scenery. In late June we were able to drive on top of the hills and see snow and glaciers, whilst also enjoying nice temperatures at sea level.

From the panoramic cabin windows there are outstanding views of the fjord. The facilities in the cabin by the lake were very good - including the motorboat.

Norway is not cheap but it is worth going!

Location is stunning and yet near enough for a stroll into the village. The cottage is absolutely immaculate and the owners obviously take great pride in their presentation. Also very helpful.
I would definitley return given the chance.

Opportunities for biking, swimming. You have a boat for useand if you are unlucky with the weather, you have TV and fireplace. Kitchen is large and functional. Nice livingroom. You can enjoy breathtaking views right from the windows. We love the place. You can hear the waves when you lie down in the evening.

Remember that it is not big city ... it is a small cozy place.

      Fantastic Location for our Honeymoon

Left on 01/25/2010 for a stay in June 2008

I can't praise Sue and Ander's enough for their part in making our stay as comfortable as possible in Flam.

We stayed for a week in a beautiful fjord side boathouse / cottage. On arriving the cottage was very clean and provided with everything we had asked for (i.e. bedding, towels etc). We arrive on a Sunday, when shops are closed - but Sue very kindly ran us to the local town to get supplies - above the call of duty, but much appreciated.

Ander's gave us a quick training session on using the boat - which gave us the ability to see the fjord personally - up close.

The accomodation was great - it made for a very memorable honeymoon.

Flam is stunning - we explored further on bike and visited a number of local attractions. The walking and scenery is second to none - with dramatic mountains and waterfalls. The railway line is the best way to travel into Flam!

      Can't recommend highly enough.

      Would certainly recommend

      Norway at its best

Left on 01/25/2010 for a stay in June 2008

It was the 2nd time, that we stayed in Flam with 3 generations. The service included the boat, the necessary equipment for a save boat trip, the equipment to enjoy a good meal and the splended view from the terrasse, indoors we found everything that we needed for a lovely holiday.
The house is exeptionally located on the bank of the fjord. - We liked best the view over the fjord to the mountains. And we liked the family Fretheim :-)

      best self-catering experience in Norway

Left on 01/25/2010 for a stay in May 2009

The hytte, both outside and inside is extremely well kept and appointed with every amenity you could need, from the washing machine to the barbecue facility and on to the motor powered row-boats with safety jackets for all sizes.

The view is spectacular and draws us back each time we come to Norway - nowhere could be as awesome and beautiful as the view from the lounge window.

Sue and Anders complete the experience of being so very friendly and helpful, giving local knowledge and advice of where might be good to visit and how long the journey might take.

The amenities of Flam are growing, and hopefully won't grow much more, as part of the draw to us is that it is a small village yet well supplied by a rail terminus and coach park as well as local buses and regular ferries. We also share Flam with cruise visitors which at times can be rather too many. It is always good when the evening comes and we are left in peace once more.

      Holiday

Left on 01/25/2010 for a stay in September 2009

Our trip to Flam was probably the best holiday we have had due to the place itself as we both do a lot of hill walking and the hill walking there is just mind blowing!
The accommodation was just fantastic in every way. Excellent quality and lovely decor. It is in an ideal situation, on the waterfront, quiet and within walking distance to shops.
We had a lovely stay in Fjordhytter and we will be back for another visit just as soon as we can.
      Highly recommended!!
