The view was amazing, a sight we enjoyed looking at constantly. The bedroom was upstairs and the view is different but equally amazing. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and relaxing. Our sleep was enhanced by the waterfall. We would definitely stay at the Millhouse again. We have already recommended this place to family members.

The home was just right! It was very clean and perfect for a weekend getaway. The owner was friendly and courteous. The best feature was the waterfall. It made for a restful night's sleep.

The UMH is great and we truly enjoyed it. We have no complaints. In terms of areas for improvement, a more up to date TV would be nice but not necessary. The only other issue is the difference between the heat on the first floor and the seoond floor. The thermostat is on the first floor and we had to set it low on the first floor to keep the second floor from being too warm, due to the design of the house and the fact that the heat goes us the stairwell. Not much you can do about that though and it was a minor inconvenience. It would not keep me from going back.
Wi-Fi was perfect as was the oven, toaster and stove. -

My husband and I stayed here for almost a week to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed the comfort of the Upper Millhouse. Having the waterfall right outside the back door was beautiful and soothing. Everything was decorated nicely and very comfortable. The location is great too, because in just a couple of minutes, you can be in downtown Hendersonville, Flat Rock, Carl Sandburg's home, the Flat Rock Playhouse, Sky Top apple Orchard, great restaurants and then a few more miles takes you to Dupont National Forest where you can hike and see some beautiful waterfalls. Steve was a great host and very accomodating! The only suggestions we had were to have a more comfortable couch (it's a sleeper, so there's not much support when you sit on it) and add a comfy recliner to the living area - I've had 3 back surgeries, so good support is always something we look for in a vacation rental. The king size bed was very comfortable! Also, adding a few cooking items like a cookie sheet, 9x13 pan, and hot pads would be great. Other than that, we loved it and will definitely be back!!

My husband & I recently spent a long weekend at the Upper Millhouse near Flat Rock, NC. Of course the waterfall, just a few feet from the deck, is the main attraction which makes the Millhouse such a unique & relaxing spot to spend time. Even if you don't enjoy the outdoors, you have a perfect view of the waterfall from the living room sofa or the bedroom upstairs with the constant sound of rainfall. The location is convenient to many of the areas attractions, only 5 minutes from Hendersonville with it's great downtown shops, restaurants & antique malls, 30 minutes from many hiking trails & waterfalls of Dupont State Park or Chimney Rock Park & only 5 minutes from the Interstate. The Millhouse is great for a couple's getaway for simply relaxing or enjoying the many activities near by.

My husband and I recently rented the Upper Millhouse for a long weekend. What a great location! Everything is so conveniently located within minutes- plenty of shopping, hiking, restaurants and sightseeing. Our favorite part of the trip was enjoying the waterfall just feet from our deck. It was so relaxing to sit on the deck with an adult beverage and unwind. We'll definitely be back!

Chapel Hill, NCEverything you hope for when you rent a cottage.
Left on 08/20/2012 for a stay in August 2012
So often we imagine how lovely a stay would be at a "cottage." And then we arrive and it's anything but. There's that damp mildew smell, dirty appliances, lumpy mattresses that must be 15 years old. Sound familiar? Well the Upper Millhouse is not the typical letdown. It's clean! It's pretty. It doesn't smell badly. The furniture is nice and homey. The kitchen is tidy and functional (and, again, clean). The bed is big and fluffy with nice linens. The bathroom is nice. And to top it off there's a waterfall outside. You can just stay and relax and not go anywhere. Unless you want to drive up the hill after a drink on the balcony to Seasons restaurant and have a wonderful meal.

Great setting, but there were lot's of dead bugs on the floor and lot's of spider webs. The kitchen had a lot of ants on the counters.

CharlotteUniquely Quaint and Romantic
Left on 05/02/2012 for a stay in April 2012
Highland Lake, specifically the Upper Millhouse, is one of our very favorite romantic getaway destinations. It's private, cozy, and a great value, as you get your own little cottage with a complete kitchen, eating area, family room, bedroom and en suite bathroom - all for a price similar to much less interesting and intimate hotel rooms. Upper Millhouse's biggest draw - and our very favorite element - is it's proximity to the "waterfall" produced by the dammed lake. We spend a lot of time on the balcony appreciating the beauty and soothing sound of the water, the beauty of the lakeside setting and wildlife. Plus, even though it feels remote, it's actually quite close to the fun shops of Historic Hendersonville and the Village of Flat Rock, the Carl Sandburg House and various hiking spots. There's even a yoga studio within walking distance. It covers all the bases, as far as we're concerned.

OxfordSlightly disappointing.
Left on 12/04/2011 for a stay in November 2011
We got there at 2:00 to check in. There were other people parked in the parking lot that were just there sightseeing and taking pictures making it a little inconvenient to get up to the room. Once inside, I noticed that there were only two coffee filters left for us, so we had to make a trip to the grocery store. There were very large black ants all the way down every stair from the bedroom to the living room. They were dead, and I swept them up along with some mouse droppings that were near the chair in the living room. I also noticed the shower curtain was mildewed on the inside. When we got ready to unload the car to carry in our suitcases, we opened the back door and there were two guys standing there. It was startling. They said they were just climbing up behind our cabin to fish. Everytime we left and came back there would be people parked in the parking spaces that were not staying there. Also, when we got ready to leave, we could not get the back door to lock, so we had to leave the keys in side and the door unlocked. We had previously stayed in the gatehouse last summer and it was very clean and nice. We just feel that with no restrictions on who can be on the property right up against the house and people coming and going that aren't staying there plus the inside of the house wasn't all that clean, we won't stay in the upper Millhouse again. Also, they need to update their televisions to flat screens. There is a small tv downstairs, but none in the upstairs. There is also no internet unless you find an unsecured wireless. We feel that the quality and care that was there before was not there this time. It was very disappointing. For the amount it cost to stay there, there should have been more care in the cleanliness and just everything in general like I said before. Don't like to write negative reviews, but maybe you should know.

We chose the Flat Rock area for a our family vacation this summer for its proximity to multiple cities and outdoor attractions. Our family included husband/wife and 2 young children and a grandmother. The upper/lower millhouse combination was perfect as it gave their grandmother privacy while still close and connected. She stayed in the upper millhouse. We stayed in the lower. The cabins had everything we needed and most importantly, a beautiful view from every room of the waterfall. The only catch is that the lower millhouse does not have a a full oven/stove, but the upper does.
The property management company was very attentive to our needs. We requested extra towels and received them within hours. Garbage was taken away twice during the week, which is far more frequent than other places we have stayed.
