Description from the owner

St Machar is set in a well-kept, landscaped garden. Stunning views of the hills and trees surrounding the area are a feature here, so bring your binoculars - you could spot regal birds of prey circling Fort Augustus, or majestic stags wandering the hills. The cottage is at the top of a quiet cul-de-sac, very conveniently placed in Fort Augustus - just a few minutes' walk and you are at the southern tip of Loch Ness! It is close to the village amenities - bars, restaurants, shops and convenience stores - and is a great base for visiting all that the dramatic Scottish Highlands have to offer. The cottage has been upgraded in 2012 with new ba...Read more

    Additional Location Information

It was the Caledonian Canal passing through Fort Augustus, with its dramatic lock gates stepping down to Loch Ness that helped bring peace to a troubled area. The canal connected the East Coast of Scotland to the West, bringing trade. No longer did the Engish Army need to be stationed here and so the 'fort' in Fort Augustus was redundant, eventually becoming the Abbey. Today, many a balmy summer day can be spent watching boats working the locks as they travel between Fort William and Inverness. There are some fabulous walks to suit all levels in and around Fort Augustus. Take the old tow path along the Caledonian Canal through to Kytra Lock and you will be rewarded with beautiful scenery, passing the canal on one side and the River Oich on the other. Jenkins Park is another great starting point. It's ideal for all ages and all levels of fitness, as here you will find long and short routes - all clearly marked through forestry plantation.

      Perfect peace in perfect surroundings

Left on 11/03/2012 for a stay in April 2008

What a find! Supremely comfortable, clean and very well appointed cottage. Wonderfully situated - very close to the village which has good facilities and 'eateries'. Don't miss a trip on the Loch, of course, and there are so many lovely places to see locally, both on foot and by road. Highly recommended - not to be missed!

A Quite Simply Outstanding Holiday Home

Left on 10/24/2012 for a stay in October 2012

From the moment that we arrived at St Machar until we left after a wonderful week long holiday we found this cottage to be beyond any expections that we all had. Quite simply it had everything from the most amazing power showers in both the ensuite for the main bedroom and also the family bathroom to the welcoming log burner in the lovely lounge, the kitchen/diner had everything that a family need on holiday as was the very relaxing garden. All of our party would like to and also very much hope to return again.

      Stunning cottage in beautiful surroundings

Left on 09/14/2012 for a stay in August 2011

The cottage is equipped to the highest standard with everything we could ask for. The property itself is warm, comfortable and welcoming. Fort augustus is a fantastic base with good local shops and a couple of great pubs serving good food and great beer. The walk into the village and down to the loch is less than 5 minutes.

In all, a great holiday in a lovely cottage with beautiful views. We will definitely be back.

      Amazing house, amazing country

Left on 09/08/2012 for a stay in August 2012

Wow, what a house! We were so happy staying in St Machar that we didn't want to leave. Such comfortable and modern furnishings and a well equipped kitchen made it a home from home. It was also very warm and peaceful with a lovely big garden. The service was excellent, a very easy place to find and check in to, and though we didn't have any problems there was lots of information available in a folder the owners had created in case we did which we found reassuring. Fort augustus is a beautiful town with lots of nice walks and places to eat and visit. We can't wait to go back next year!

Excellent property in a good location

Left on 09/08/2012 for a stay in December 2010

The house is well equipped and beautifully presented. Upon arrival, the premises and furnishings are spotlessly clean and of good quality. The tranquility of Loch Ness is apparent in the general area; the loch itself is only a short walk from the house and the routes round about are scenic. This house is highly recommended.
