      Big Sky Retreat

Left on 10/24/2012 for a stay in October 2012

We had a peaceful, relaxing vacation at this unique guest house. The screened in porch was great for a nap on a quiet afternoon with a cool breeze blowing through. The living/dining room is a huge open space with windows all around. The furnishings are top-notch antiques. We loved the old wooden doors with skeleton key locks and the creaky wood floors. The skies are very dark for stargazing. We saw a couple dozen meteors of the Orionid shower. We also had a double feature one night with a far-away lightening storm in the west and the meteors high in the east. Our hosts, the Kennedy's, are friendly and accommodating but completely unobtrusive. We've also stayed at their B&B; in town. While in Ft. Davis, the Fort itself is a good stop. It focuses not on military history but how the people lived. Also, the Ft Davis Drug Store has the best chicken-fried steak in Texas. And of course the McDonald Observatory Star Party is not to be missed. It's worth breaking a diet. All in all, we had a great time and have already made a repeat reservation.

      Fourth visit even better!

Left on 01/15/2010 for a stay in January 2010

We've stayed at Hope's Ranch in Fort Davis three previous times, and have
just returned from our fourth stay. We plan to return as often in the future
as we can! Wonderful old ranch house, set on many acres outside Ft. Davis.
Peace, quiet, solitude. Convenient to nearby towns (Marfa, Alpine), Davis
Mtns. State Park, and Chihuahuan Desert Research Institue. Long drive to
Big Bend, but doable on a long day. Great scenery, great hiking, great
birding. Great relaxation. House had everything we needed for a four-night
stay, plus more. Owners Steve & Carla Kennedy could not be more attentive
and helpful when needed, but leave you utterly to yourselves if you have no
needs. Wonderful people! Be sure to meet their dog Zeus!

Only forewarning: the town of Fort Davis itself is not exactly a culinary
mecca :) Plan to roll your own most of the time. Couple of restaurants in
town, but if you're into fancy eating plan on driving to Marfa or Alpine.

That said, we couldn't recommend Hope's Ranch highly enough! Enjoy.

      Spacious and quiet adobe

Left on 12/05/2009 for a stay in November 2009

We really appreciated the ample seating for a large family group, and the fully-stocked kitchen. Each bedroom was just right for someone among us. REALLY wish the fireplace was functional, and would have benefitted from brighter reading lights -- old eyes, you know. If you like elbow room and plenty of things already stocked in a house, this is the one.

      Hopes Ranch and Bicycling Fun

Left on 09/22/2009 for a stay in September 2009

Hopes Ranch served as our headquarters for the Permian Basin Bicycle
Association annual Cyclefest 75-mile loop bicycle ride through the Davis
Mountains for September 2008 and again in September 2009 . It is spacious
and very comfortable. We really enjoyed the historic nature of Hopes Ranch.

The kitchen has everything necessary for cooking. We ate some meals in the
dining room and some on the screened porch. Several friends came over for
dinner after the bike ride and we had plenty of room. The three bedrooms with
two baths were comfortable and modern with very nice linens. Checking the
weather on the internet was easy with the WiFi.

We really enjoyed the solitude and privacy of Hopes Ranch. Sitting on 40 acres
the nearest neighbors cannot be heard and are hardly ever seen. We enjoyed
watching the blue quail wandering through the backyard and then walking
across top of the fence. The grasses with their heads waving in the breeze are
a sight to see. There are great views of the mountains to the west and the high
grass covered plains to the east. Sunsets were just majestic.

We whole heartedly recommend Hopes Ranch for anyone wanting to visit Ft.
Davis with lots of room to spread out and enjoy yourselves whether you are
cycling, hiking, sight seeing or just kicking back.
