I finally got my wonderful wife of four year to leave Missouri to go on a honeymoon. Staying at the El Matador was wonderful place for us to stay for her first time to Florida.
I grew up in Niceville in the 70's and knew what a wonderful place Destin and Ft. Walton Beach area was and I wanted her to enjoy the beautiful white sands and clear waters of the emerald coast.
Staying at the El Matador was a short walk to the beach and the staff at Southern Resorts was very accommodating to check in and made sure the room we stayed in was to our liking; and it was.
I hope to get my family back to Florida in the near future to further enjoy the area and the fresh sea food not available in Missouri.
I have no intention of using any other resource than Southern Vacation Rentals due to their staff and many properties through the Emerald Coast.

We had a great stay at this location. It was near all of our destinations and just the right amount of space for 2 people. Next time we hope to actually make it out to the beach area..
I hope this can become our new "place to stay" when we return to Okaloosa Island. -

We were thrilled with the El Matador! The condo was perfect for the two of us! Even though we had the threat of Isaac bearing down on the panhandle we were completely content. The condo was clean and accessible to the beach...what else do you want in Florida? We loved the location as far as grocery shopping and restaurants. I have been trying to ge my husband to vacation in Ft. Walton for a long time...now that he's been I'm sure we will visit annually!

Mississippiworst experience we ever had with a roach infested place

We were on our honey moon and this place was disgusting...we were scheduled to stay 4 nights...never happened...this place was infested with roaches, big ones, pregnant ones with eggs...worst place we have ever been...killed at least 6 roaches during the night...southern vacation rentals moved us, but to a dump, Tropical Isle, smelled of animals and cigarettes , we have never experienced anything like this before...customer service was horrible...rude ppl except for one guy who handled a situation...we ended up in Pensacola at the Holiday Inn...will never use Southern Vacation rentals again and does not recommend them to any one...do not use these ppl, all they do is take your money and dont care about the customers...i give them a rating of 100 below zero...they are not worth it...there is nothing good about this place and as far as customer service goes, they are terrible.

The view was not much but the location is really what we wanted and that place had only one thing working for them and that was the location and how close it was to the beach with multiple access points. The cockroaches didn't ruin the trip but since that's the first thing we saw when we entered the room it did have a weird effect on the rest of the trip. The sheets on the bed were filthy with some form of defacation from an insect (probably) and hair from a private area on a human on the sheets. We ended up cleaning the place ourselves, washing all sheets and cleaning the bathroom... the reason this is my complaint is because everyone who rents these condos pays a "cleaning fee", I still did not see where that fee came into play. I think we should've been paid all other cleaning fees to clean that place.

Reservations and check in was very simple and easy.Price was competitive with other rental communities for our time frame.Upon our arrival we were pleased with the location of the community and addminities. Once we started unpacking and getting settled we noticed the cleaning of the unit could have been more thorough, and sanitary. Beneath the covers of the bedding were serveal dead bugs and debri. Taking time to purchase cleaning supplies we cleaned and removed the insects after taking pictures. I than called Guest Services with my concerns to be told that the Property Manager would return my call. We proceeded our vactions that day to discovered someone had entered the condo while we were at the beach. This was very unsettling because there was no call or any indication someone was coming to the condo and I felt very violated. I than called Guest Services once again and no one knew what I was talking about! A second email went out after we checked out and a call was made april 10, 2012. I am requesting my cleaning fee be credited back to my account, a small request concidering the run around and effort I have made to speak with "someone". Overall I will concider calling Southern Reantal again for my future vaction plans.

It can be difficult to find a place to stay when you're only 2 people and don't want a generic hotel room. Although we didn't have the best view of the resort, the pool was right out the door and we only had a short walk to the beach. Having grown up going to the Destin area at least once every summer, it was so nice to have a room that wasn't decorated in peach, turquoise, and seashells! Keyless check-in was easy, as was using the wireless internet connection. Our only complaint was the smelly seaweed on the beach, obviously unavoidable. Loved being the last resort on the beach...tons of empty beach to walk and find the perfect spot. Really, really great.

Overall the condo was lovely. Nice for the price. Only minor issues were that we saw a couple of roaches and the bed wasn't particularly comfortable.

I was expecting a place that was small; so that was not a problem. I was not prepared for the condition of the property. My biggest complaint is a safety issue- ground level sliding door to porch w/ no lock, only a flimsy metal bar. The porch was not enclosed, either, just went straight to parking lot. I found 3 roaches while there, 2 dead. The toilet handle was broken, and the shower door was messed up, causing water to go all over floor when bathing. The hallway going to the condo smelled terrible, and there were many loud neighbors making noise all through the night. We were given 2 towels for a 4 day stay, and no washcloths. Also, the ceiling fan was not working, and a light was burned out in the bathroom. This was definitely not worth what was paid ($169, after taxes and fees).

this unit should be pulled from the inventory, its old, shows a lot of wear and not only was it infested with large cocroaches.. or palmetto bugs there were also ticks.. i was very unhappy and would like consideration for a major discount in the future, the staff tried to make it right and put me up in a nicer unit, and that was commendable.. the southernresorts folks were great!
