Description from the owner

Mountain View is a clean, four person, Victorian apartment set in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. Positioned on the banks of the Caledonian Canal this is the perfect setting for a great holiday.

Mountain View has a stunning panorama of the Ben Nevis range and the Mamores. Situated in Banavie, a small, quiet village three miles from Fort William, it is the perfect base for those who enjoy peace, quiet and the great outdoors, whether from their car, bicycle, canoe, skis or on foot. Access to the countryside starts at the end of the garden, which bounds Neptune's Staircase on the Caledonian Canal and the Great Glen Way.

The ideal base from which to explore Fort William and the surrou

Left on 06/05/2011 for a stay in May 2011

Mountain View apartment is ideally suited to those who wish to explore Fort William and the surrounding area. It is located in peaceful Banavie and provides both an easy escape from and also easy access to Fort William when the need arises. The apartment is spacious, comfortable and well equipped. Given that Fort William is prone to rain from time to time, the downstairs lobby area is extremely useful for drying wet clothing and footwear away from the main living areas. This is a feature that is rarely found in holiday lets within hilly/mountainous regions.

Those who tend to self cater for the whole of their holiday are well served by at least two well stocked local supermarkets. Those wishing to dine out have the choice of the Moorings Hotel (adjacent to the apartment), Fort William, Glen Nevis, Achintee to name a few.
Tom and Julie Gilchrist, the owners of the apartment, are excellent hosts who are only too willing to provide help and advice in order to make the holiday more enjoyable. During our stay, we had cause to inform Tom that the television digibox was not working correctly. Not only did Tom descend from Ben Nevis to attend to the problem but he also turned up with a new television that same afternoon.

To summarise, this apartment is suitable for small families and couples who wish to engage in sightseeing, walking, climbing, winter sports and most anything else they wish to do.

      What a fantastic week!

Left on 05/06/2010 for a stay in April 2010

After a long drive from London we were met by a warm welcome from Tom and a spectacular view of the Ben Nevis mountain range.

'Mountain View' is an apartment situated above a former shop in Banavie, just outside Fort William. The garden backs on to 'Neptune's Staircase', a series of locks on the Caledonian Canal - odd seeing small ships and yachts progressing up the hill from our kitchen window!

The apartment is tastefully furnished (no second-hand furniture here!), warm and clean. There is a large lobby at the bottom of the stairs - ideal for getting off muddy boots and rubbing down wet dogs, not that we had any as we did not see a drop of rain the entire week!

Okay, the stuff you need to know. Large, well equiped kitchen, with spectacular view towards Ben Nevis. Lounge was comfortable. Some might say the tv is on the small side, but hey, we didn't come here to watch tv! There is a DVD player too. Separate dining room. Large bedroom with very comfortable bed. There is a second bedroom with a good-sized bunk-bed in it. Across the hallway, a large bathroom with a stand alone/double-ended bath complete with shower.

Original floorboards feature throughout the apartment, with rugs in strategic places. It certainly had a cottage feel about it. The only thing we missed was an open fire, but after a day's hard walking, why create more work for yourself? (Oil-fired central heating kept the place warm).

The road Mountain View is on is relatively quiet and shops, pub etc are within walking distance. After 10-15 minute drive, you can be on the path going up Ben Nevis! Tom has offered to take us up the scary way next time: we will hold him to this as we will be back!

Idyllic winter holiday in the Highlands

Left on 03/28/2010 for a stay in March 2010

My husband and I had a wonderful 2 week holiday staying at Mountain View.
The flat was very roomy, comfortable, well furnished and equipped with everything you might need. There was a beautiful view of ben Nevis and The caledonian Canal from the kitchen window and a charming view to the front including the local rugby pitch.
The owners were close to hand if needed and very helpful. They even offered to get some food in for us.
My husband managed to climb five of the Munroes, some with a local guide whilst I had lovely walks along the canal. There were two good restaurants/bars within a few minutes walking distance.
The weather was superb to top it all.
Would recommend this venue and would stay again ourselves.
