What Past Guests Are Saying
Visit it to experience it !!
Truly exceptional property in a magnificant setting.A true home from home experience with excellent facilities and lovely attention to detail of the internal furnishings, which were only outdone by the unique bbq which allowed us to have a romantic/enchanting ( midgey free) evening !.
The location of the property allows you to walk out and experience a breathtaking panoramic view of Ben Nevis and the range.
A 10 mins walk at dusk from the cottage allows you very close encounters with deer.
Easy access to all routes allowed us to visit Eilean Donan castle,Isle of Skye and a ferry trip to Mallaig in one day.
The property has plenty of reference material which catered for all tastes wether experienced climber or novice walker. It also had tv,cd,dvd facilities.
The welcome gift of a home made chocolate cake was the start of a very enjoyable week.
The cottage was beautifully furnished, very clean and fully equipped.
Thanks to Jane and family for allowing us the use of But n Ben. Im sure this will not be the last visit.

Perfect in every way
We stayed here on our honeymoon, its perfect in every way. The cottage is very well thought out and has everything you could ever need provided. The BBQ hut is simply amazing, we just wish we had one at home!

So pleased that But 'n' Ben helped in giving a good start to married life ;-)
Best wishes for the future, Janex
A lovely cottage!
My partner and I were very impressed with But'n'Ben, the cottage had everything we needed and more. It is obvious that the owner has a lot of love for the property and has spent time making it look welcoming. The property on arrival was very clean, I almost felt like we were the first inhabitants, it definitely did not feel like there had been occupants who had left on the same day. The owner has been very clever with storage, with little wicker boxes and shelves that will keep all your holiday comforts tidy and out of the way. The kitchen is fully equipt with everything required to cook a substantial meal, we particularly liked the posh coffee cups that we used to enjoyed the odd cheeky whiskey coffee (Scottish whiskey of course!). The BBQ hut definitely lived up to expectation; not only does it have the obvious indoor BBQ facility, but is also fully equipt with crockery and cutlery so there is no need to remove items from the cottage. There is also an iPod dock so a pre-prepared "BBQ Playlist" could really set the mood.
Our holiday was about getting away from busy and demanding jobs so it focused on checking out the local scenary and relaxation, rather than adventure, but for those who are seeking adventure (hiking, rock climbing, cycling etc) there is a secure out house that can be used to store equipment. If you do want to take it easy, I would recommend the local farm shop for a lunch-time treat. Speaking of treats, the homemade chocolate cake was lush and a much appreciated little touch.
Overall, we had a lovely holiday, largely made enjoyable by the But'n'Ben itself.

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. I shall forward it on to Jennifer so she can see her cleaning efforts were appreciated.....just a bit worried she may want a pay rise! Hope to see you back sometime. Jane
A Highland Gem
This is an absolute gem of a place. A contemporary styled, cosy cottage with absolutely everything you could need for a break away.
Our booking enquiry and any questions we had were answered very quickly and it has been a pleasure to deal with the owner from start to finish.
The outside bbq hut is amazing. We aren't really into bbqs but this is something else. It was lovely and warm even when the snow was on the hills.
The information pack in the cottage was one of the best we have even seen, everything was covered. There are also plenty of books, games , CDs & Dvds available for guests to use.
Many places could be reached quite easily from the cottage and there are a couple of excellent restaurants (if you can leave the bbq hut) within a reasonable distance to the cottage.
Response from Jane Gray - 11/08/2012
So glad that the BBQ Hut worked it's magic :-)
Very comfortable cottage in convenient location.
Very efficient booking with clear insructions on arrival. Homemade cake left as a welcome which is a nice touch. This cottage is exceptional, clean with all mod cons. Although its small, everything has been thought of to make your stay a real pleasure.

Thank you both. Hopefully look forward to welcoming you back....the hills are calling! :-)

Fantastic cottage for a perfect holiday
We had the pleasure of staying in this wonderful cottage for 7 days. Everything about it is just perfect and it is a very comfortable base from which to tour the amazing highlands of Scotland. As advertised this cottage is small but perfectly adequate for 2 and is very cosy. The BBQ hut in the garden is just amazing - it is a delight to BBQ no matter what the weather. The BBQ hut (like the cottage) is equipped with everything you will need. All in all a fantastic holiday in a just perfect cottage. We cannot wait to go back.
Response from Jane Gray - 10/02/2012
Thank you for this. Look forward to welcoming you back and so glad you enjoyed the BBQ hut as much as we do. Jane
Cosy Cottage in the Highlands
Cosy cottage, right on the a82, so both easy to find and in an excellent spot to explore the highlands of Scotland. Fort William, Glennfinnan, Loch Ness, Fort augustus & Inverness all within easy reach. The cottage itself was small but so well equipped, you don't need anything else really! Great reception from the lovely lady living next door, plus a delicious chocolate cake which we ate with gusto. And don't forget the sweetest BBQ hut outside - shaped like a little doll's house, with a super BBQ grill which grills food to perfection.
A real gem of a cottage. Highly recommended.
Response from Jane Gray - 08/22/2012
Thank you for the lovely comments and so glad you managed to see so much of the Highlands. Hope to see you both back soon. Jane
It was my new husbands and I honeymoon couldn't of asked for a better place to stay! Everything we wanted, needed and didn't even realise we wanted. The BBQ hut was amazing and our personal favourite thing was the bird tables bustling with life, I even asked for a bottle of champagne to be left on the table 8 months previous and they sorted it all out for us. Would recommend to anyone!
Response from Jane Gray - 07/25/2012
So glad you had such a good time and that the local birds put on a good show!
We stayed here at the end of June and had a fantastic stay.
It seems that every last detail has been thought of, so we really felt at home all week. The cottage had all amenities supplied. The BBQ hut was an added and excellent bonus.
The cottage is really well located for expiring the highlands, 12 miles out side of Fort William, on the road to Inverness. Speen Bridge, a mile down the road had a small shop and a few places to eat.
The cottage it's self was nicely decorated and furnished. Although small it seems that everything has been thought of (there is even a washing machine and tubule drier) with out it feeling cluttered. The welcome chocolate cake was quickly demolished while we planned out our weeks stay with all the local guide books and maps that were in the cottage.
All in all a great stay, would defiantly stay again.
Response from Jane Gray - 07/19/2012
Delighted you both had such a good week and that you enjoyed the cottage. Jane
Really comfortable and well-equipped cottage, with everything of high quality and immaculately kept. Very useful to have all the little housekeeping bits like dishwasher tablets provided, and the option to arrange delivery of a welcome pack from the local farm shop worked really well. Enjoyed the varied range of books/CDs etc, and the chocolate cake more than lived up to its reputation! Location excellent for both local walks and facilities, as well as for a varied range of longer distance trips to explore the Highlands including Skye. Good wi-fi connection and we did actually get fair mobile connectivity most of the time (Vodaphone). Thoroughly enjoyed trying out the barbecue hut, and much appreciated the friendly and efficient organisation and welcome provided by Jane and Jennifer. Definitely one of the nicest places we've stayed at.
We had an absolutely amazing time at the But'n'Ben cottage. The cottage is extremely cosy and very welcoming after a hard slog up Ben Nevis! We were made to feel very welcome and nothing felt like it would be a problem. Jane has thought of every little detail and it really felt like a home from home. The chocolate cake was very much appreciated after a long journey from South Wales and was possibly one of the nicest cakes we have ever tasted. The BBQ hut is amazing and you won't want to leave it. The cottage is perfectly located and easily accessed and has local amenities just a short drive away. Overall a wonderful cottage, perfect hosts and a beautiful location, we would recommend it to anyone.
But and Ben
Our booking of this cottage was based on previous reviews and we are pleased to say that all comments stand true. The cottage is cosy but well equipped. The cottage provided fridge/freezer,diswasher,microwave,
washing machine, dryer, dishes, cutlery, iron board, TV, payphone etc...you would hardly want for any other items. The place was immaculately clean. The BBQ hut is a must experience. The location felt central for easy access to Ben Nevis, Loch Ness and Craignorm. Mobile phone reception was poor but wifi worked well. My only suggestion ( and this is meant as a supportive critique rather than a negative)is for the bedroom windows to have an additional panel of sound proof glass and darker curtains. The cottage sits on the edge of a82 with regular noisy 60mph vehicles with bright lights which interrupts a morning slumber. Otherwise would highly recommend.
Response from Jane Gray - 05/06/2012
Many thanks for your suggestions. This is the first time guests have commented on the road noise and we shall now look at the possibility of secondary glazing in the bedroom. The curtains will also be improved. We do not want anything to spoil our guests holiday.
Secondary glazing and new curtains now fitted.
A romantic adventure to escape the city in beautiful Scotland!
Lovely cosy cottage for a highland getaway ideal for an outdoor adventure or a good relax. But'n'Bens is very well equipped and also has the Danish BBQ hut which is a superb place to chill-out in. Local shops and restaurants are only a mile or so away and the surrounding counrtyside is stunning. Will definitely be back!
Lovely Highland getaway
We had a great time at the But 'n' Ben. A lovely little cottage with an added wow factor of a BBQ hut. I wish I had made more use of it. It is ideally located to tour the Highlands. Very clean and all you need (a home from home).
But n Ben is in a great location for the highlands. The cottage is extremely well equipped and comfortable. The BBQ hut is an added bonus and cosy! It is spotless and has everything you need for the stay!
This little cotttage has all you could possibly need, about a 20min drive from Fort William.A warm welcome awaits you with a yummy chocolate cake, wildlife on the doorstep and fresh eggs next door.Bbq hut is fantastic it is a real treat, lovely location for exploring all Scotland has to offer, a week just wasnt long enough. But will be back.
jamie and donna
fantastic time in a magical place.
This cottage is fantastic! We had a fantastic time and will be going back again. The location is wonderful and we really couldn't fault the cottage. It is well equipped with everything you could need and finished to a high standard. Unlike some i have stayed in it has a real homely feel and really nice attention to detail, like books about the area, a welcome pack telling you all you need to know. 10/10
Lovely cosy cottage
This is a lovely cottage in a great location with fantastic scenery right on your doorstep. Perfect place to stay for walking, cycling and sightseeing in the surrounding area - Great Glen Way, West Highland Way, Nevis Range and coastline towards Mallaig, as well as numerous picturesque lochs. The cottage is spotlessly clean, with quality fittings and contains everything you need, the storage shed and barbeque hut are great additions. Highly recommended for any couple looking for a cosy retreat at the end of a exhilarating day in the great outdoors.
We're visiting again...
Fantastic cottage in a superb location. Contains everything you would need and more, kind welcome and bbq hut is such an asset.
Fantastic cottage, Fantastic location
But n Ben is the perfect holiday location for couples wishing to experience the beautiful Scottish Highlands. We spent a week at the cottage in april and were lucky enough to have fantastic weather to explore the surrounding area. The location is brilliant - not far to Fort William, the Nevis Range, Glen Coe, Loch Ness and the road to the Isle of Skye. Perfect for those wishing to experience the outdoors.
The cottage is perfect for two and contains everything you need for a fantastic break. The most delicious chocolate cake awaits you on arrival and fresh eggs are available next door. This cottage has one amazing bonus - the BBQ hut - perfect for a relaxing evening. We would recommend venison burgers and a nice glass of red wine.
A fantastic experience all round and I would and will recommend this place to everyone. We can't wait to return!
Spent a great week in this cottage. Everything you could need, some cracking walking in the area and superb fresh, tasty eggs from Jennifer next door, plus constant 'hentertainment' provided by the chickens. Plus a delicious chocolate cake. Must come back soon!
My husband and I spent a wonderful, romantic week at But'n'Ben cottage near Spean Bridge in the Scottish Highlands. The cottage was extremely comfortable and, Jane, the owner went to a great deal of effort to ensure our week was perfect. There was even a freshly baked chocolate cake on our arrival and fresh eggs are available from the hens that roam nearby. The Pièce de rÊsistance however has to be the BBQ hut, which is available for use summer and winter and is great fun.
The surrounding area is very beautiful and there is an extensive range of activities very near the cottage such as walking, mountain biking, fishing etc.
But'n'Ben cottage really is a special place to spend a romantic holiday.
silver end witham essex
outstanding cottage and location
everything you could possibly need and much more especially the bbq hut out of this world we had couple of cosy evenings in there, wonderful scenery nearby, Ben Nevis is a must, Fort William close to as well, plenty of cycling to be had and places to walk, couldn't have wished for better place to be.

A five star cottage in a five star area with five star country side.At a very good price indeed, worth every penny we would say The standard is very high and is kept very clean as we have seen on other visits in the past [ highly recomended ]
But 'n' Ben
But 'n' Ben is a fantastic cottage for any outdoorsy couples looking for somewhere to retire after days out in the hills. Whilst small, it is immaculately fitted out with absolutely everything you could need in the kitchen, linen and towels provided and a comfy double bed. The adjacent shed is really useful for storing bikes & other gear but in terms of storage space, there is plenty in the main house too. Being on the main road it is easily accessible in all weathers. A great bonus is being able to get fresh eggs from the next door neighbour!
What a wonderful place!
The But 'n' Ben is a brilliant cottage, well located for walks, skiing and sight seeing in the Highlands. We've been there twice now as the cottage is superb! It is extremely well equipt, very clean and has outstanding information for visitors and a very warm welcome on your arrival. Last time we went we'd driven for ten hours from Hampshire and arrived to a warm cottage and a delicious chocolate cake!
A great choice for a romantic week away or a weeks walking, including Ben Nevis of course.
Just the ticket for a week in the Highlands
We stayed in this cottage for a week in 2010 and had a wonderful time. From the greeting of a chocolate cake to the fresh eggs from the neighbour it was just what was needed to escape the hustle of London.
It's very well placed, somewhere half way between Loch Ness and Fort William and easy to get to both, as well as Ben Nevis and the likes of the Isle of Rum and Egg we were able to comfortably do in day trips.
The Finnish barbeque is a nice touch too!
David from Italy
What a spot!
We were welcomed warmly when we arrived, and found the cottage extremely well appointed and comfortable. It's easy to find and very well placed for loads of outdoor activities. Ben Nevis isn't far at all and the main road doesn't disturb in the slightest. The best fun of all is the outside BBQ/bothy.
The Aussies from down under.
One of the best holidays we have had, loved it.
For anyone needing a holiday this was ideal, the cottage was immaculate, and the BBQ Hut was just marvellous for cooking the steak or salmon. The scenery around Fort William is a photographers dream;we walked,we fished,
infact there was so much to do and see we ran out of time, we are really looking forward to our next visit later this year.
Thank you Jane and your sister Jennifer, it was great.

But n` Brilliant
We stayed here during the brilliant weather of the last week in May `09, and every morning, having worked ourselves into extreme anger over the latest news of our thieving and fraudulent legislators, and bolstered by eggs from Jennifer`s hens, we emerged into some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and walked or climbed our way back to contentment. A great holiday.
a really cosy cottage
A lovely wee cottage with every amenity for a relaxing break ! The cottage is in a perfect spot for exploring the central highlands. The eggs from next door are delicious! Recommendede for a cosy get away from it all !
Come and Enjoy
My wife and I stayed here in May 2009, the cottage is very well appointed and clean. Wonderful BBQ even in the wet! Even Ben Nevis appeared from the mist on our last day. You need to be into walking and other energetic activities as there is not a lot of "night life" in the surrounding district. But if you want peace and quiet (despite a main road going past the door) this is a lovely place. I took pictures of the surrounding countryside standing in the middle of the road without any difficulty.

One of the most beautyfull cottage ever seen
We will never forget the wonderful days in But n Ben. Everything is decorated very nice. You are able to enjoy the lonlyness of this part of Scotland. And we never forget the wonderful BBQ. Very friendly contact to Jane and her sister Jennifer.
An Excellent Holiday
The cottage is very clean and comfortable in beautiful surroundings. Very well situated for all routes. The BBQ hut is fantastic and has to be used more than once!
We hope to return again in the future.
The eggs from next door are a must.
Alex & Julie
Nice clean property, laid out for an easy stay. We climbed Ben Nevis, Ben Macdui and Braeriach, highest 3 in the country from here and the cottage was a good base for getting to them. Bbq was a real bonus.
An ideal location with everything you could want
A lovely relaxing holiday in an ideal location to explore the Highlands. The cottage was equipped with everything we could need, including fresh eggs for the lady next door and chocolate cake on arrival. Would definitely recommend.
Perfection in the Highlands
We first stayed in the cottage for our honeymoon in 2009 and have been back since as we feel like we can't keep away! The welcome is second to none. As for cleanliness, you feel as though you are the first people to use the facilities. The BBQ hut is tremendous. My husband wants to use it every night. We cook steaks from the farm shop, langoustines from Loch Fyne Oyster Bar along with scallops and lots of other fish. We always top it off with toasted marshmallows.
Jennifer from next door is lovely. Her hens lay the tastiest eggs.
After a day walking or exploring it is the perfect place to come 'home' to
