Mafube Mountain Retreat
Fouriesburg, Free State, South Africa
(Property location is approximate)
Additional Location Information
Mafube Mountain Retreat is situated on a 465 hectare farm in the Eastern Free State Highlands which is one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa. It is set in a natural wilderness area in an amphitheatre of colorful red, yellow and cream sandstone cliffs. The farm is about 8km from Fouriesburg, a small rural village where basic supplies may be bought and is only a 20 minute drive from the popular “Art Mecca” and tourist town of Clarens, which is very popular as weekend destination for people from Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, and where there are many good restaurants, shops and art galleries. The golden Gate Nature Reserve is also in the area.
The farm is accessed by a 3kilometer dirt road which joins the R711 tarred road betweem Clarens and Fouriesburg.
This area is well known for its Adventure tourism, for example:
• There is an 80km quad biking trail along the banks of the Caledon River
• There are several challenging 4 wheel drive tracks,
• Beautiful Back-packing or “Slack-Packing” trails
• River rafting near Clarens
• Horse-back riding
Other activities on the farm or surrounding are are as follows:
• Fly fishing for trout or yellow fish
• Canoeing on the dam (a small lake)
• Tubing on the Little Caledon River in summer
• Hikes to Rock Art sites and dinosaur footprints
• Many beautiful and interesting walks and hiking trails
• A photograpic destination with breathtaking scenery
Mountain biking on the many dirt roads
The area is a very interesting and important area for paleontologists. The Clarens sandstone which is endemic to the area is an important source of fossils dating back 190 million years, and in addition, we have well preserved dinosaur footprints on the farm, dating from the same era. They belong to Theropod dinosaurs which were a family of two legged meat eating dinosaurs of various sizes.
The weather is very cold in winter, especially at night and in the early mornings, although the days are usually bright and sunny and wonderful for hiking. Although the veld is dry at this time, it is a popular time for visitors.
In summer the days are long and hot with occasional thundershowers, usually in the afternoon. The wettest months are November and December, when the farm is arguably at its most beautiful, with the veld green and lush and with plenty of wildflowers to be seen on the mountains and fields.
