      Magical!

Left on 02/15/2013 for a stay in February 2013

I booked a long weekend at The Sawmills for a group of friends and I to enjoy a relaxing getaway. We had a fantastic time. The house is old and beautiful, we loved getting out on the water in the little boat and canoe. Ruth picked us up from Fowey on the boat which added to a lovely weekend. Very relaxing hide away - I definately recommend and would go back tomorrow.

      A magical weekend

Left on 01/30/2013 for a stay in January 2013

We arrived in the snow on a January weekend, just a group of friends wanting somewhere interesting and sufficiently remote that we could party without disturbing people - and this was just an idyllic choice!! Some of us were brought over by Ruth's boat, others made our way along the clay track by the river in the dark (pack head torches!) and catching our first glimpse of the house shimmering in the distance was just magical. Cut to the fabulous wood-burning stove, the roll top bath, the views of the river and forest (not to mention the partying) we had a wonderful time. Accommodation is comfortable, not high end, but all the more homely for that - with loads of kitchen/cooking pots/utensils etc. Throw in the tiddlers fishing nets, and board games left for visitors to enjoy, plus some of the rock n roll history (Stone Roses recorded 'Fool's Gold there, and Oasis worked on Definitely Maybe (Liam chose the bedroom with the little chandelier..)), the pet Robin who thinks it rules the roost - is all very pleasant. The couple of days felt like a short week - very easy to switch off from everything - would highly recommend.

A fabulous relaxing weeks holiday for friends and family

Left on 06/12/2012 for a stay in June 2012

Excellent venue for 10 adults and 6 children to get together and have fun. As we drove into the village to be picked up by boat and taken to the Sawmills the stress washed away. Stunning way to approach the Sawmills with all our provisions. Lots of walks and things to do locally. The kitchen was very well stocked with equipment and freezer space but we needed more champagne glasses!!! Would love to go back again.

      Unique and relaxing holiday setting

Left on 04/21/2012 for a stay in April 2012

There is plenty of room for a big family party - including bathrooms. The rooms are all well furnished but without too many frills. The kitchen is extremely well resourced having pots plenty large enough to cook mussels etc and generous fridge/freezer space.
The fact that you can only access by a beautiful footpath or by boat makes it a very special and peaceful setting. We had up to 3 dogs with us at any given time and they thought that they had found a home for life.
Renting a boat was the icing on the cake. You learn to become dependent upon the tides so plenty of time to catch up with walks and reading in between boating excursions. The most magical moments were boating into Fowey with a very friendly dolphin swimming within a metre of (and under) the boat. The pub in Golant is welcoming and relaxed and there are many opportunities nearby to taste the usual delights of Cornwall including a very good butcher and fishmonger in Fowey. Local wildlife is prolific; we got rather blaze about the egrets and cormorants. A wonderful setting for a really relaxing holiday. Thank you Ruth.

What a memorable place in which to celebrate a special family oc

Left on 08/26/2011 for a stay in August 2011

From the moment we arrived at Golant we felt welcomed and cared for.
Granny and Grandpa (who celebrated his 70 th birthday that weekend), 6 grandchildren aged between 1 and 7 years old and another 8 adults (assorted children, and spouses) all had a great time at this magical hideaway. Despite some rain, canoes and kayaks were well used, the local pub provided an en excellent rendezvous for the surprise party guests who were boated across for Sunday lunch and the sun shone on the important day.
The only downside was that a long weekend was certainly not long enough!

      Amazing hideaway!

Left on 06/06/2011 for a stay in May 2011

We were met by Ruth in the boat at Golant, loaded up our luggage and we were off, to the secluded Sawmills, quick 5mins boat trip rewarded by amazing view of the house. Very secluded (apart from the friendly swans) and peaceful, we enjoyed boat trips, playing in the canoe and crabbing off the jetty. The house suited us perfectly as an extended family get together, we had lots of room to spread out, enjoyed eating in the lovely conservatory and playing pool at night (with lots of wine!). The walk to Fowey was an energetic 45 mins, the 10 mins to Golant was much easier! Excellent access to the Eden Project helped make this a fabulous holiday destination. We managed to stay an extra day too to enjoy the superb weather!

      Definitely Maybe

Left on 01/10/2011 for a stay in January 2011

We had a fantastic stay in the quirky and unique birthplace of a decent slice of my record collection. Set in its own isolated creek off of the River Fowey, we were met upon our arrival at a nearby slipway in Golant by the lovely Ruth, to take us, our bags and numerous crates of wine downstream to our destination. It's a spectacular sight as you approach the rather impressive building and it appears from between the trees.
We were a group of 6 couples, and had enough double bedrooms to comfortably accommodate us, with a room of bunks left spare. Most rooms had en-suites, with only a few of us left to share the other bathrooms, so all worked out fine there too.
Although the building doubtless has many a tale of rock and roll excess, the modern refit quickly satisfies those more concerned with being cosy and comfortable than wishing to witness the scene of another Gallagher fight, and sometimes it's easy to forget that beneath the living room there's a studio that's been sought as the perfect hideaway for so many household names. There's a lovely open-plan kitchen and lounge area, complete with pool table, which becomes the social hub of the house, with great vistas from the attached conservatory for some memorable meals too. Taking a 'stroll' into nearby Fowey is not for the faint-hearted as there's some pretty serious hills to take on, but bearing in mind the beautiful seclusion they provide the Sawmills it's a small price to pay, and no-one need rush anywhere anyway when holidaying in Cornwall. Getting back to the cars at Golant on foot is much easier (and flatter!), but it's highly recommended to make sure there's a boat on hand if you wish to bring much shopping back with you as it's still a good ten-minute hike. All in all, a most memorable and fantastic stay in a real one-off pad. Thanks Ruth! I'm off to listen to the Stone Roses again...

Unique and wonderful holiday — wish I was there now

Left on 10/15/2010 for a stay in May 2010

I couldn't have chosen a more idyllic holiday than the Old Sawmills in Cornwall. Accessible only by boat - or by a lovely woodland walk from the village of Golant - the tranquillity offered by the Sawmills' location on the River Fowey was disturbed only by the under-fives in our party! (There were 10 of us, though the place is big enough to accommodate nearly double that number.)

With the stunning views and plentiful entertainment provided (including pool table and canoes), it would have been very easy to spend the entire week lazing around at the wonderful accommodation. However, that would have meant missing out on entertaining evenings at the Fisherman's arms pub in Golant, which I would thoroughly recommend!

Special thanks must go to Ruth, the manager, who made us feel so welcome and looked after us brilliantly - providing plenty of local knowledge, interesting tales about the Sawmills' musical history and introducing us to some charming company, as well as providing an occasional taxi service. A holiday at the Old Sawmills has something to suit everyone, in beautiful secluded surroundings. I am hoping to book a return visit later this year.

      A Unique Experience

Left on 10/06/2010 for a stay in July 2010

Staying at Sawmills was a totally unique and wonderful experience, as soon as we saw the place we said to each other "we're definitely coming here again!" From the feeling of being on your own island, the rock and roll history of Sawmills , the boating life, to the large family meals every night (14 of us in total) it all added up to a great holiday. Its also a great base for exploring Southern Cornwall and we will definitely be coming back!

Totally Brilliant - exactly what we were hoping for!

Left on 10/06/2010 for a stay in September 2010

Sawmills was the perfect setting for my friends hen do. The house was lovely and well stocked with everything we might need and the setting rural and laid back (we could make as much noise as we wanted!). The icing on the cake was the studio which gave us a fantastic and fun filled recording experience that we'll never foget. A huge thanks the Ruth and Mike who looked after us so well.

      Somewhere different from the rest!

Left on 10/05/2010 for a stay in August 2010

The Old Sawmills is a 'real' house in a naturally beautiful location. There is nothing 'manufactured' or 'staged' about it - which for me, is exactly what I am looking for when I stay in a self-catering property. If you are looking for something a lot more 'individual' and memorable than what I would describe as your typical 'hotel' experience (many self-catering properties fall into this category too!) - then Sawmills is perfect. This place has a great history, lots of atmosphere ...it's friendly, casual, relaxed, quirky ...and lots of fun. The 'walk' or 'boat ride' in, adds to the seclusion and charm of the setting - we loved it! - a really memorable place.

      peaceful ,magical getaway

Left on 10/05/2010 for a stay in August 2010

This is the second time we have stayed at Sawmills, there were 15 off us altogether a mixture off adults, teenagers and 3 ten year olds, who had a wonderful time in the canoes, My son and his band had come to record and finish their album, so they were in the recording studio,

The accomodation upstairs has everthything you require it just needs some updating in the decoration and bathrooms etc which they are planning to to do and have already started and that will make it even more comfortable.

The grounds are great and its so wonderful to sit on the upstairs outside decking read a book and take in the stunning surroundings. We will be back next year without a doubt.
