El Caleton - like being stranded on a desert island with a few mod cons!
Our self-catering apartments are located in a small, friendly & very peaceful complex , built in a modern interpretation of traditional Canarian architecture. We are in a secluded location, well away from any other buildings (or construction!) right on the beach.
The apartments have either one or two bedrooms, (a double room and an additional twin). There is ample storage space in the roomy fitted wardrobes. Cots and Z-beds for children can usually be arranged at a small extra charge, payable to the manager on arrival, but please note that the maximum occup...ancy per apartment is usually 3 or 5 people, 6 only if the party includes a baby or toddler.
All apartments have recently-updated bathrooms with thermostatically-controlled shower, WC and basin (some with bidet). Kitchens have also been recently refurbished and all have gas hob, microwave oven, fridge and toaster. Some apartments offer additional appliances such deep-freeze or coffee machine. Ask us for details if you have particular requirements.
Living rooms all have a sofa bed for 1 and comfy seating for 4 to 5 guests, dining table and chairs for the same number . Some apartments also have digital TV with DVD and/or CD/radio available. A
Patio doors open from the apartments' living rooms onto either a spacious terrace (ground floor) or balcony (first floor), all of which offer breathtaking sea views and have table and chairs so you can eat outside and enjoy the Canarian weather. Ground floor terraces have, in addition, 2 sun loungers and a sunshade. Some with BBQ.
All guests can enjoy the sub-tropical communal garden with its dragon trees, bougainvillea, oleander and hibiscus, from which, down just five steps, there is direct access onto the white sands of a small 'cove', edged by black lava reefs and with crystal-clear, warm water.
Apartments are thoroughly cleaned before guests arrive and there is also a weekly maid service for stays of 14 days or longer. Towels and bed linen are provided, the former changed twice weekly and the latter weekly for longer stays.
We have local, English-speaking management, who are on-hand should you need them (and available 24/7 by mobile in case of acute emergency.)
The complex stands on its own about 1 km from the village of El Cotillo (2 minutes in your hire car or a 20 - 25 minutes walk along the beach).
El Cotillo remains a traditional fishing village with tourist facilities rather than an overgrown resort. There are about a dozen restaurants, mostly Canarian with a couple of Italian places. The majority have terraces overlooking the sea with very fresh, locally-caught fish is obviously the big draw on most menus. There are several bars, both traditional Canarian tapas places and a couple of (very quiet!) ex-pat 'pubs', a large new supermarket, a good bakery/patisserie (currently in French ownership), a couple of banks/ATMs as well as several general/souvenir places. Internet access is cheaply available in the village and several bars offer free WIFI if you have your laptop with you. In other words, most of your everyday needs can be catered for locally.
El Cotillo has some of the best beaches in the Canaries, including a vast stretch of sand on the so-called 'Big Wave Beach' to the south of the village and a whole series of beautiful, small, sheltered coves with brilliant white sand and clear turquoise sea to the north around El Caleton. These are divided from each other and protected from the waves of the open sea by lava stone reefs and thus provide safe bathing, even for little ones. Please note that naturism is very, very popular along this stretch of coast.
Recreational activities available nearby include walking (we are directly on the much-recommended north coast Corralejo-Cotillo walk), cycling (hire in El Cotillo), fishing, surfing, windsurfing (surf centres in Cotillo whilst nearby Lajares with its surf shops and surf schools is Fuerte's 'surfing capital'), diving (dive centre in Corralejo) and of course, swimming and snorkeling straight from the door. Golf courses in Corralejo or Costa Antigua. Jeep and quad bike excursions and camel rides are also available locally.
Popular xcursions include nearby Corralejo for shopping and nightlife, the capital, Puerto del Roasrio, the beautiful central mountains, home to historic towns such as Betancuria, Pajara and Antigua, with their museums and craft centres, or take a ferry trip to the island of Lobos, or even to the neighbouring island of Lanzarote for the day.
Our apartments should appeal to those who dislike crowds and big holiday resorts, who do not insist on all the latest gadgets, but are happy to live quite simply for a week or two right by the sea. Prices start from 50 Euro per night for 2 people in a one-bedroomed apartment and 60 Euro per night in a two-bedroomed apartment. Add 10 EUR per night per additional adult and 5 EUR per night per child. Prices include all water, gas and electricity used, bed linen and towels, final cleaning and the services of the local management. For weekly stays, towels are changed midweek and for stays of 2 weeks or longer, a weekly linen change and cleaning service is also included.
