YOU DO NOT NEED A CAR! and if you do hire a car PARKING IS FREE in the basement private apartment parking place and wander down the hill around to this attractive 500 year old city. To reach the beginning of the ZONA VELHA City quarter (‘Old zone’) is about 10 minutes.
Besides the ‘Art Deco’ MERCADO DOS LAVRADORES market, there are many restaurants, museums including Madeira Story Centre, The City Theatre – a copy of the original ‘La Scala’ opera house and art galleries including the one in the yellow Sao Tiago pirate fort right on the ocean front. ANADIA shopping centre at the bottom of the hill has a PINGO supermarket open until 10pm and other businesses including a pharmacy.

Additional information about rental rates
The prices above are for 3 PEOPLE sharing the accommodation. The apartment accommodates 6 people. There is a supplement of 6 euros for the fourth, fifth and sixth person for each night.
A Deposit of 30% of the total rental price must be made within 5 days to secure a booking and the balance must be paid 6 weeks before check-in at the accommodation.
When a booking is made within less than 6 weeks before check-in, the total payment is required within 5 days and it is non-refundable.
Payment is by bank to bank transfer to a Portuguese or UK account.
Communication of cancellation: clients wishing to cancel must communicate this in writing immediately to the managers of the property.

We were met at the apartment by Paul and Iva who made us most welcome and gave us a lot of useful information about the accommodation and things to do in Funchal. We were absolutely delighted with the apartment which surpassed our expectations in every respect.It would certainly suit six people and was particularly spacious for just the two of us. The apartment was very clean, nicely decorated and well equipped.We had lovely views from the lounge of Funchal right down to the harbour and of the cable cars and mountains from the kitchen on the other side of the apartment.
The kitchen was very bright and a pleasure to have our breakfast in each morning. The location was perfect for us as it was only a ten minute walk down into Funchal,yet far enough away to be secluded and peaceful in the evenings.Although the elevated position of the accommodation above Funchal provides lovely views it does mean there is a short steep hill to climb on the way back although by the end of the week we were getting quite used to it.
Funchal itself has plenty to see and we did not need a car. We worked out the local bus timetables and went up into the mountains one day and on another day we used three separate bus journeys to do a seven mile levada walk which was the highlight of our holiday.
Overall, Madeira has so much to see and do and the apartment made it all the more enjoyable. We highly recommend both!

Thank you for all your kind help in arranging taxis for transfers to and from the airport. Quick,
easy and punctual. For the welcome pack on arrival. Iva, thanks for showing us around the
apartment with clear instructions and being on hand
if we needed you and Paul thank you for your 'orange alert rain' text! Despite the rain (and lots of
it) we had a super week recharging our batteries! Loved the apartment; a treat to have individual
bedrooms and bathrooms and all sparkling clean. We had absolutely everything we needed
and enjoyed eating in a couple of nights. The dual aspect views of the lights on the hillside at
night were magical in the evenings. I had been to Madeira before but didn't have the view -
what a treat this time! It was definitely worth the pull up the hill! At least it was a very short hill
and kept us fit! We certainly didn't need a taxi! We couldn't use the pool as we had a week of
perpetual torrential rain (we didn't mind as it was so warm, just went out with our umbrellas) but
we wanted to as it was clean, peaceful and quiet. Location was great; 5/10 walking minutes from
buses, taxis, the cable car, supermarket and the seafront. What did we like about the apartment?
Everything! It was 'home from home' being spacious and comfortable.
As for Madeira itself I can see why people return. It is a genteel island where you really can relax
and unwind. Funchal has a nice buzz going on and there are interesting places to seek out in the
town. We enjoyed walking along the coast to the fishing village pausing for coffee along the way.
We hopped on a bus to return and it made a great day out. A car is not needed and we explored
for hours on foot. Transport is cheap and the tours round the island are a must for first time
holidaymakers in order to appreciate the scenery and the flowers. Eating out was inexpensive

My husband and I had a lovely stay at this apt. The apt itself is beautiful and very clean and spacious. It had everything you could possibly want and the pool and gardens were lovely.We thought the location was excellent and very central.

We were traveling with a group of friends who had previously stayed at the Varandas Du Funchal in other apartments and had booked again. I managed to find this apartment on the same complex and was not disapointed. The booking was very easy and we were sent lots of info.
The Varandas are only 10 mins walk to the Old Town with it's numerous bars, cafes shops & restaurants. The only downside is that it's a very steep walk back, but as a couple of us were older we just booked a taxi back for around 5 Euros so it wasn't a problem.
The apartment was very clean, spacious and homely, with everything we needed. The photos of the pool do not do it justice as it was large and deep enough to swim and cool off in. As it was very hot it was welcome to take a dip at the end of the day and gave the apartment a holiday feel.
Our friends rated ours as the best out of the three we booked as it had great views over the pool and gardens and the view from the kitchen gave great panoramic views of the hills and cable car.

Large appartment photos do not do it justice & quiet location
with the old town area (mozart restaurant, & best chinese in funchal grande marluha etc) & the pingo supermarket just down the road 10mins walk Paul & Eva could not
be more helpfull even left a welcome pack including wine
have stayed in various locations in funchal & this is the best by far everything is within walking distance

Very central - 10 - 15 minutes walk from the centre of Funchal. Public transport nearby.
Beautiful small city. Lots of architecture, and culture, beautiful parks and friendly atmosphere.
Fantastic climate, lots to do.
Loved the apartment. Clean, spacious, well equipped, Views to front and back and set in quiet residential area, away from the tourist area. Steep walk up to apartment from town.

My husband and I felt a bit greedy booking a three bedroom apartment for just the two of us but the location and facilities appeared to match what we were looking for. The apartment was amazing. Very spacious, very clean and in an ideal location just 10 minutes (even for me) from the Market. When self catering it is good to know that the kitchen facilities are sufficient but these far outstripped our expectations, the huge fridge and freezer were a revelation and coming home was a bit of a let down. We had good use of the balcony (huge) but only got to use the pool once as the sun was a bit low to fully heat the pool at this time of year.
On Paul and Ivas recommendation we took a half day taxi trip to see the north of the island but generally we used the service buses and pottered to Camara do Lobos and Machico (excellent) and Ribera Brava (out of season).
Thank you to Iva who picked us up from the airport and made us feel so welcome, and to Paul for making the organisation of our visit so smooth. Not only would we recommend the apartment to our friends, we also recommended it to a couplde we met on a walk while there - All the comforts of home, with all the luxury of a good holiday. thanks for staying at Funchal Bay Apartment again, the 5 out of 5 review and recommending the Apartment to friends and strangers! We and the owners are very happy that you found the apartment amazing, very spacious, very clean and in an ideal location just 10 minutes from the Market. As you pointed out if travellers are self-catering the kitchen facilities are important and in the case of the apartment they “far outstripped” your expectations.
In November, the pool would be warmest middle of the afternoon. Not far from the Apartment next to the yellow pirate fort is a free public beach. Also, at Praia Formosa and Doca do Cavacas are free public beaches and natural sea water rock pools. Where if the sea is calm the water temperature would be the same and perhaps higher!
Also, we are happy that you followed our advice and used taxis and buses to explore all island’s coasts and interior. But, as you wrote don’t tell too many people about this amazing apartment otherwise you may find the apartment booked next time you want to stay in Madeira!

My family had a great stay at this apartment which was overlooking the sea and harbour. It also had a very nice pool area for the complex residents. It was very clean, spacious and fully fitted out with anything you needed and the hosts Paul and Iva were delightful, very informative and willing to help when required.
There are plenty of restaurants nearby and a supermarket within walking distance. Recommend trying the chair lift and a boat journey to see the dolphins. A holiday in June is a must as you could also catch one of the firework display/music shows at the weekend.
My only negative - all the bed mattresses were very firm (which my family were not used to) and therefore did not allow us a full nights comfortable sleep. Would recommend this be looked at, but this is a simple minor point which could be rectified quickly. Thanks for the recommendations for things to do and events particularly in the month of June: the Atlantic Firework Festival every Saturday night, the dolphin watching boats, the cable-car ride to Monte at the bottom of the hill.
On your only negative the firmness of the mattresses we have brought this to the owner’s attention and this will be rectified quickly.

Everything was great. There were all necessary comforts and the view was ecxellent. The rooms were in perfect order and we didn´t even have to clean after ourselves. I would deffinately recommend it. The food in the restaurants was delicious and I really recommend to try fish. The service was fabulous everywher. Because in our group was a seventy eight , year old traveller, it was a bit difficult for him to climb up the hill every day. That is the only bad thing I could say. In our group there were 78, 68, 66, 46 year old travellers. But I really liked everything else.

If the Apartment was not on the hill...the views would not be so excellent! Madeira is mountainous and the city centre has many hills The alternative to walking up the short hill which has steps and handrails is a taxi from outside the 2 shopping centres not far away. If there are 4 of you ..you can share the taxi fare which would be around 5 euros...just over a euro each. We hope you return to Madeira soon and look forward to hearing from you. Paul and Iva

on arrrival at funchal airport we were meet by pauls wife iva .must add lovely lady .she took us to our appartment ,the appartment was fantastic 3 bedrooms 2 bathroom all the mod cons.washing machine tumbler dryer cooker every thing was there ,it was loverly decorated ,swiming pool was pleasure coming back there after great days out .at the end of our stay paul iva's husband came and took us back to the airport ,thank you paul . fantastic time we had .oh and i must add paul and iva even gave us there phone number just in case we needed them ,

We were 3 adults staying in this Funchal apartment for a week during February 2011. We had a fantastic time and really enjoyed our stay. The apartment is bright, roomy and modern with the use of a communal pool and secure parking - ideal for our needs. But best of all is that it's just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Funchal - which mean't that when we weren't exploring the rest of this wonderful island by car we could reach anywhere in Funchal by foot - a real advantage. The owners/managers, Paul & Iva, met us at the airport on arrival, showed us round the apartment and really made us feel at home. We'll certainly be staying here again next time we visit Madeira
