USAMixed bag. Great house. Average service
Left on 04/11/2013 for a stay in April 2013
The house is large and tastefully restored/expanded. The house is filled with curios and antiques. The garden and pool are well maintained. The website erroneously says that the house is centrally airconditioned. As we were told while booking, only 3 of the 5 bedrooms are airconditioned.
Our experience of the service (four night stay) was pretty average. Perhaps it is partly a result of misunderstood expectations on our part.
Housekeeping
We noticed that towels used near the pool were simply refolded. Beds were remade the day after our arrival. On all other days, they were left unmade. None of the bedrooms and bathrooms were cleaned during our stay. Linen was not changed. A small soap in each toilet is all the toiletries that are provided.
Drinking Water
There is no potable water in the house. We had to buy water and generate a lot of plastic waste. A water purifier would make so much sense.
Running Water
By design, water to all taps is by pumps that come on when the tap is turned on. So a powercut (one or two hours most days) while in the toilet can be quite inconvenient.
Using the Private Chef
We asked the manager to buy our groceries. We received several hand written receipts with no shop names. As we found out when we visited the markets the next day, the prices of items were inflated on these receipts. Sometimes by as much as a 100%.
Airconditioning
Power cuts and fluctuating voltage to the a/c units made for little heat relief during our stay. We had a 10 hour power cut on one of our four days. A temporary generator was provided but it was too small to power even one of the a/c units.
One can understand all the above issues on the basis that this is a house in a small village. But having paid what we did, we were hoping to be insulated from these issues.
Having rented large villas in France, Italy, Bali, Thailand and now Sri Lanka, I would recommend that one look elsewhere for better value and holiday experience.

What an amazing time we had at Polheena Estate. Everything about this place forces you to relax. We were 2 families with 4 children ranging from 3-6. What makes Polheena Estate so very special is not only the beautiful house which is superbly furnished, the fabulous location adjacent the paddy fields plus the great swimming pool but most importantly it's the staff. Manju and team could not do enough for us. They were brilliant and nothing phased them. The food that they loving prepared (& this is no exaggeration) was outstanding. What a unforgettable introduction to Sri Lanka. We'll be back. Thank you to all the team that took such good care of us. The only point I would add is that not all of the bedrooms have a/c so if you're not used to the heat this can be difficult.

Recently we had a week at Polheena Estate. Loved every minute of our stay there. Great location, peaceful but close to the action too! Comfortable beds, great pool & grounds. Manju & his wife took great care of us and cooked amazing food. They were very welcoming, gave great advice and were always happy to run us in to Galle when we wanted to. Would highly recommend Polheena Estate - great place to relax and explore the area of Galle. We'll be back!

Shanghai, ChinaRejuvenating, uplifting and relaxing
Left on 02/20/2011 for a stay in January 2011
We stayed at Polheena for 10 days and could have stayed forever. It felt like the home you dream of having with wonderful meals at the times you ask for, kind careful attention to your needs in a tropical paradise. Quiet, calming and very relaxing.
The house is spacious and airy so with a family we all had plenty of space. Truly heavenly.

LondonSimply beautiful :)
Left on 01/22/2011 for a stay in January 2011
We stayed at Polheena for 3 nights from the 5th till 7th of January. We were a family of 4 and my fiance.Upon arrival at the big wooden gates, we immediately knew we were in for something special. Manju, the housekeeper, greeted us on arrival. The first thing you want to do is explore every inch of the estate.
The exterior of the house is very impressive,&the; pool area with a separate lounge area is incredibly inviting. When you step inside, everything is decorated in a very tasteful manner that suits the ambience of the house perfectly. I especially loved the big lanterns that greet you at the entrance to the house and the antique fans&suitcases; that adorned the living area.
There are 2 bedrooms downstairs&3 upstairs. The master bedroom is very large&has; a fantastic view from the balcony of the neighbouring paddy field. The bedrooms downstairs were of a good size with large&luxurious; bathrooms.
We could have spent our 3days at the estate & been very happy, however we did venture out as there was so much to see and do! Manju arranged a boat trip to Jungle beach for us. I would highly recommend this, as the beach here is very secluded. If you have the energy, there is a great buddhist temple that can be visited after a short trek up the hill.Manju also arranged a surfing lesson for us, which was lots of fun but probably less successful on the managing to surf part! If I haven't made it apparent so far, Manju is very helpful&has; some great tips&connections;! He also arranged a dinner for my fiance&I; at the Galle Fort hotel.
Manju&his; wife, were very helpful in the kitchen as well. Polheena has a barbeque just outside the kitchen&a; portable barbeque (wheelbarrow!) can also be arranged by the pool and lounge area.We did this all most every night! All you have to do is provide Manju with a grocery list and some cash for it and the shopping is done.
We were very sad to leave Polheena, and would highly recommend it to travellers. Will most definitely be back!

Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaLovely estate near Galle
Left on 04/11/2010 for a stay in April 2010
We stayed at Pohleena for 6 nights with another family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) and there were 3 of us. There was loads of room (we used 4 bedrooms - 3 had aircon) and the spaces were beautiful both inside and outside. It looks just like the photos which is not always the case. Manju, the housekeeper/manager was extremely helpful and assisted us with all our needs (booking taxis, vans, tuktuks, inquiring about tours, giving directions). Manju and his wife made us breakfast everyday and cooked a nice curry and fish twice in the evening. Dinner by the pool was fabulous and atmospheric and the kids loved the pool and house (as did the adults). There was plenty of room for the 3 children (4, 12, 14) to run around and play and they used the pool everyday. We would have been happy to just hang out at the house and pool everyday, but Galle, Mirissa and Unawatuna were calling. All of which were in close proximity to the location as was the turtle hatchery where we released some babies into the sea (on the way back from Mirissa). If you are interested in Whale watching at Mirissa, be sure to have Manju call in advance and book a place for 7am the next day - we did not do this and were not able to get on a boat. Too late one day and the next the weather was too bad. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a more perfect place for our families and we enjoyed every minute of our vacation. The TV and DVD were a nice addition for the kids and I also enjoyed having a hairdryer and IPOD dock as extras. It was luxurious and spacious and a wonderful retreat after a day at the beach. We can't recommend it highly enough and would definitely consider returning. Be aware though, that the trip from Colombo airport takes around 4 hours, so breaking up the trip along the way helps as does picking up alcohol at the duty free at the airport (the selection in shops is minimal and not cheap). It was lovely to have a drink by the pool and listen to the birds at the end of the day.

Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaPeaceful luxury.
Left on 09/10/2009 for a stay in August 2009
We stayed at Polheena with our 3 children for 7 nights and we all had an
amazing time. For us, it was a decision between getting 2 hotel rooms
somewhere in the Galle Fort, at one of the beaches or renting a house like
Polheena. Going with Polheena was the right decision, as it gave the children
so much room to run around and swim. And it gave us peace and quiet.
Polheena is close enough to nearby attractions to enjoy them, like Unawatuna
Beach, but far enough down a country lane to be away from it all. It was a
breath of fresh air to go back there after a day tripping around in a Tuk Tuk or
lying on the beach.
