Description from the owner
The 19th Street Retreat, just 1.5 blocks from the beach and a few blocks to the Historic Strand, welcomes you. This historic building was built on soil transported to the Island for building Galveston's Seawall immediately after the hurricane of 1900 and sits a block from of the renowned Galvez Hotel built in 1911. The Retreat was constructed by craftsmen over 100 years ago using cypress and teak left from the ships destroyed by the storm.
This once proud duplex with separate entrances, upstairs and downstairs, withstood its first 100 years of living, loving, and facing the elements when we bought her in 2005. She needed lots of TLC...Read more

Tyler, TXCozy place for a large family!
Left on 09/11/2012 for a stay in August 2012
Mr. Terry was very generous to show us around the place and inform us of different places to visit. The home had everything a family needs, from extra blankets, towels, and lots of kitchen utensils (definitely a plus). We were able to sit out in the balcony and grill for the whole family. I loved the fact that the area around was quiet and that the beach was within walking distance. We will definitely be back again soon.

North Richland Hills, TXLabor day weekend.. perfect place to stay!
Left on 09/10/2012 for a stay in September 2012
We stayed three nights here with family for Labor Day weekend. Terry was very easy to reach and answer our questions when we made our reservation. Everything was even better than expected. The beach was within walking distance and you can hear the oceans waves at night sitting out on the deck (my favorite part)! We were close to great local places to eat. This is a wonderful historic home with all the modern conveniences. Very clean, stocked with plenty of towels, kitchen utensils, and the beds/pillows were very comfortable. We will definately stay here when coming back to Galveston.

Looking for a rental house in Galveston? So was I. Look no further. I experienced this house with a group of 9 other girls for a batchelorette party and we had a great time! The house slept all of us comfortably, was super clean, smelled great, is in a fantastic location, and made us feel at home with its cozy decor. The owner took the time to meet us there and show us around and there was lots of room for our bags and other luggage. (You know how girls can be.) We walked to the beach and back-roundtrip 10 minutes and Pleasure Pier was only 7 blocks away. You will not find a better house for the price-trust me I did my research. Even the pillows were soft; I would stay there again in a heartbeat and would definitley recommend this house and the amazing owner! He answered all of my questions and was very welcoming. Cheers to Mardi Gras!

This group certainly did their homework prior to making a commitment. I have a personal goal to deliver what I promise and to meet the expectations of each and every guest. Making guests happy with our place requires a long-term commitment to high standards. Simply stated, I try as hard as I can each and every time because I only get one chance. I certainly appreciate the review left by this lady and I have to get everything ready for the next people that have chosen to stay at our place.

Left on 07/09/2012 for a stay in July 2012
My family stayed at Terry's house over the week of July 4th and we couldn't have been more pleased with the entire experience. Our party included 10 adults and we were all very comfortable. The deck provided a great place for all of us to congregate for breakfast and dinner after days filled with beach, shopping and fun. All of the information in Terry's ad was accurate. The excellent reviews describing Terry, the location, cleanliness, ameneties, etc. are dependable when deciding to stay at this home. We have nothing but great things to say about the whole week. Thanks again for making our week such a pleasure...we will be back!

You have heard that you only get one chance to make a good first impression. I feel that it is, not just my goal, but my duty. When a family trust me with their vacation, I feel an obligation to deliver the best that I can. From making factual representations with the descriptions and the many pictures to being there upon arrival, greeting, and giving a tour. With honor, respect, and a strong sense of pride, I welcome guests to enjoy our place for a weekend, a few days, or more. You made your decision to stay with us and I want to prove to you that it was the best choice among the many alternatives. Yes, you made the decision for the first-time and I want you to feel very comfortable making it again and again and again. Thank you.

Our family held a family reunion there, and it was great. Such a convenient location, within walking distance of the beach and Millers seafood restaurant which has wonderful seafood. The house is super clean with lovely decor, linens and dishes. The upstairs and downstairs duplexes make for a great location for multiple couples and other family members. Hope to have reunions there many times in the future.

Location, location, location...that is so important when you plan your vacation. Be sure that you are just moments away from a variety of choices for things to do. Our location offers you so many options.
"Super clean" is a description that is on the top of my list each and every time I welcome someone to our place. The sand and winds make it a challenge to keep it clean but it is a top priority and a definite plus for your vacation. There is no reason to settle for less. You deserve our best effort whenever you choose to stay with us. -

Left on 06/21/2012 for a stay in May 2012
I met the owner at the property wher we did a "walk through" and he showed me around, pointing out important details. It smelled clean, looked clean and was very comfy/cozy. The a/c was fine considering the humidity. Tv/internet was a plus since I had several teenagers. Kitchen amply stocked as well. Overall a fabulous stay with a convenient location - 2 blocks from the seawall (walking distance from the new Pleasure Pier) and a short but direct drive down to the Stand. The deck was nice and had plenty of seating for our large party. There is also a grill but we didn't use it. The property owner arrived at check at time to make sure our stay was acceptable I thought that was a nice touch. I will stay again on our next trip to Galveston and would highly recomend this property to anyone. Thank you Terry and family for a great weekend!

-Last weekend (june 15th and 16th) of this year (2012),stayed at this wonderful house. -the house is only ~1 1/2 block from the beach (SeaWall).-Perfect value: Terry does not add cleaning fee and all of the misc fee like others. The house is iimpressive clean and new material (from their fix from the storm in the past).-Terry is very considerate. He welcomed us with a bag of ice in the freezer, cool house (before we got there) with aC + nice music from the TV in the living room and then he shows us around the property.-Terry is a very cheerful and friendly owner and has a great pride of his property.-The beds were incredible comfortable.-The design of the house is beautiful. Wall is painted in very light pink and very light green, like a dream house to me.-Restrooms and kitchens were functioning well and very clean too and all of the shower curtain, toilet, etc. are new and have to stains at all.-Kitchen has lots of things to please all of the moms and those who enjoy cooking.-Towels: lots of them: were smelling good and clean.-The fence and balcony are new and no chips at all.-The balcony is big and beautiful.-Propane grill (and another extra gril) is in balcony, so you can barbecue on it.-Furniture in balcony (we had the top part) was new and clean and well maintained, so u can sit there when the night comes and look at the stars & slow flying clouds like I did on Sat. night and just have fun conversations with family and friends.-TV with cables are working fine, DVD player too (we also rented NetFlix and it worked out just fine).-Wifi internet was great
*Some very minor improvement can be done, to make it even more perfect:
-Bigger stones/rocks can be put on the side of the house where the water hole which is used to wash our feet before we enter the house (after the beach). Reason: only soil can be too soft and can bring mess to the wall easily and mess to the feet too when there's many frequent wash.

Left on 06/17/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We have stayed at the 19th Street Retreat 2 years in a row. There is always about 20 of us and there is plenty of room, the beds are comfy and the interior decorating is perfect. A nice mix of old and new. We always rent both units and Terry always has them ready for me and my family. We discussed moving the reunion to another location on the island, but almost everyone said, "No! We love it here!" I would recommend it to anyone who wants a nice, easy, and convenient stay, for a day or a week. Terry is great! Thanks Terry for 2 great family reunions, we look forward to many more!! K Frierson

cyncovPerfect location for our large group
Left on 06/04/2012 for a stay in May 2012
I took my daughter and some of her Rotc friends from high school (they are all graduating this year) some have enlisted in the military so it was a special trip for them sort of a "last hurrah." There was 12 of us and we all slept comfortably. It was clean, smelled good and had plenty of towels, bedding, supplies etc... It is walking distance from the seawall - just 1 block and a straight drive down to the Strand. The location made it easy to split up and go wherever each group wanted to without the kids getting lost. Even though it was Memorial Day weekend it felt very relaxing. The kids enjoyed sitting on the large deck in the early mornings and evenings and the living areas were large enough for them to play karaoke, guesstures and other board games. I loved all the ceiling fans as its very humid so close to the ocean and the a/c got nice and cool. The kitchen is roomy and well stocked with utensils etc... But if you like to use a lot of large pans etc. you may want to bring one or two of you own. I was able to cook two large meals for this large group ok though. I will definitely stay again maybe as soon as this summer. This is a duplex and we stayed on the upper level - I would like to try the lower level next time just to avoid lugging all the stuff up stairs since I probably won't have a bunch of kids to do it for me next time. Great stay/cozy comfy property and great price. Thanks Terry!

Terry,
Thank you for working with us on our time of arrival. It was nice to know that a person would be meeting you and showing the house and answering all questions we had.
As a family of 16 (2 months to 65 yaers of age) it is hard to find a home big enough to accomodate us and also be in the best location. You have managed to do both at an affordable price.
I do have to say the front deck is the best part of the home and also being 1 1/2 block from beach was great.
When we are ready to return to Galveston you will be the first one we call.
Thank you again for the great vacation!!! -

Left on 04/06/2012 for a stay in March 2012
We had such a great time @ this house. My son & his friends wanted to go to the beach for Spring Break, but had to have parents along because they are all 17 or 18 years old. My husband & I rented the house & brought 8 teenagers along. The 2 girls had the Queen room, we had the King room & the boys slept in the bunk beds and pull-out couches. The two bathrooms were quite sufficient & the washer/dryer was a vacation saver. The big open dining room was perfect for card games in the evening. There was plenty of room in the kitchen to let the teenagers make breakfast. I guess the best feature was the short walk to the Sea Wall/ocean. Miller's Seawall Grill was a 5 minute walk. The food was scrumptious & the service was first rate. Terry met us at the house with the key when we checked in. What a beautiful home!

This family was wonderful and expressed how much they enjoyed their stay at our place. I see their review was written six months after their visit. I have to wonder if they forgot the good times. How we lost a star during those six months is a mystery to me but I hope they return to sample our hospitality again. Terry

What an amazing weekend at the 19th Street Retreat! From the get go Terry was quick with responses, kind and welcoming, great to work with. When arriving to the house we were taken away with how beautiful, neat and clean it was from the outside. We stayed in the Upper Deck and walked into an air conditioned, fresh home. Terry had gotten the house ready for our arrival with music playing in the background and cold air circulating through the house, which was nice after a hot, August drive.
The house was fully stocked with everything we needed, very clean, more blankets and towels then we could use. We had a total of 11 people and we were all very comfortable and never felt crowded. The beach was a block and a half away, very short walk, clean, fun and not over crowded. Accessing the beach was easy, a crosswalk helped our family safely cross Seawall Blvd.
Terry was very knowledgeable of the area and provided us with lots of recommendations of where to go and how to get there. :) Thank you Terry for making the 19th Street Retreat such a great place to stay! We look forward to more visits.

Excellent service from Terry, very cordial and a complete and detail explanation of all the amenities of the house. We stayed on the second story or upper half of the house. The accommodations were comfy and super clean. Everything looked in excellent condition. We liked the decor of the house with some of the antique furniture in it. The kitchen had everything, fridge, stove ,oven, microwave, toaster, and all the utensils for cooking. Plenty of pots and pans.Great for the budget minded like us. Plenty of room for everybody, with seven teenagers we had no problems. Nice patio outside in the front with 2 tables and a grill,we could see the beach from out there. Very close to the beach, only about block and a half. Pretty good location. Money wise it was a great deal for the services we received, the only bad part, we couldn't stay longer. But definitely coming back again.
We strongly recommend this property.

The cozy house was wonderful. The owners Terry and Carol made our stay so nice. From the a/C on when we got there to maps of all locations we needed. The area and location were perfect. We would pack our coolers and roll them across the street to the beach. The view of the Ocean is wonderful from the top deck. Our girls family gathereing turned out to be the best. Only one thing wrong not long enough. Sleeping areas for all!

We have been taking short trips to Galveston for the past 18 years.
We have had a variety of pleasant experiences, from sleeping in a tent at the State Park, or renting a suit at Casa del Mar, or renting a beach house at Bolivar peninsula. Our stay at this rental house has been the best accommodation so far.
We enjoyed the privacy of each of the three rooms, equipped with one TV and best quality linen. We appreciated the fully equipped and functioning kitchen. Most of all we loved the upper deck with its ocean view, the tables where we had breakfast and dinner and the barbecue pit.
