We have just returned home from our fifth trip to the yurt at the Middlefork Ranch. This was our first Vrbo that we stayed at when we moved to the Bay area 3 years ago and we keep coming back to this one. We have only stayed at the yurt but there are several other rentals on the ranch which we have heard good things about as well. The owners have gone above and beyond with this rental. They have always been extremely prompt and incredibly accommodating. The yurt is located right on the river to the point where it provides a constant peace with the sound of the running water. The yurt is exquisitely crafted and decorated - the layout is extremely functional but also very "homey" and rustic. There is a separate room with a very comfortable bed and a loft with a futon type mattress which is also quite cozy. The kitchen is well stocked and there is a full sized fridge and range top for you to use. Outdoors there is an extensive deck, with a grill and a wonderful hot tub with a lovely view of the rive and stars. There is a covered gazebo a few yards from the front door which we haven't used (as we visit mainly in winter) but would seemingly be perfect for an outdoors summer dinner. There are fresh eggs provided and the farm, with it's variety of critters, is very charming.
It is well centered for a variety of activities in any season and the although the price is comparable to some of the hotels in Crescent City, this has so much more intrinsic value, wide open space and tranquility to offer over any tiny little box you'd rent elsewhere. In regards to the road in, it is part of the adventure and there was no problem with us ever getting in or out (and we had some rain the first two times we stayed) but if you are nervous about dirt roads, there is ample parking by a little foot bridge across the river -you will need to lug your things a small way but the view is wonderful! We are sad to leave but know that we will be back again and thank you Mike and Kris for sharing your home! -

My husband and I just got home after 9 nights at the rustic retreat. The cabin was perfect for the two of us. We did not drive in the back way but parked on the other side of the river and walked over the bridge. We let them know when we were arriving and they helped us get all of our things over to the cabin. The cabin is secluded and private. The deck outside overlooks the river and the wonderful garden that we were able to use, what a treat! Some of the things that made it a great place to stay was the Chocolate Lab Mattie who came and visited with us every morning and evening as well as the Hot Spring hot tub and the gas grill on the deck. The bridge is easy to cross and the walk to get there goes through a beautiful spot with ducks, ginny hens and geese. Just an amazing place to come to after a day of hiking in the Redwoods. I would recommend going into Crescent city for groceries, really not that far and the road to get there goes through a beautiful part of the redwoods, all kinds of groves along the way. The Oregon Cave in Cave Junction Oregon is only 35 miles away and was an unexpected highlight. The area is so full of things to do you will wish you had more time! Kris and Mike have made a beautiful place on the Smith River.

I love this place! We stayed at the Yurt, and have stayed there before! The Yurt is fabulous! The River is awesome! I love this place! Kris and Mike are so nice! The Yurt is so quiet, and peaceful! The ranch is a slice of heaven! Make sure you have a four wheel drive to drive into their location. You will need it! Thank you Kris and Mike for opening your ranch!

We stayed in the Yurt and I highly recommend it because it is out by itself, not far from the foot bridge and right next to the river. The inside is comfortable and modern, with all the conveniences of home. Just down the road are the Redwoods with a great drive and wonderful hiking trails.
Down side: don't try to drive in, even if you have a 4X4. We did and it scared us both. We drove out and used the foot bridge from then on. The walk-in is easy, short, and beautiful. Use it.Response from Mike & Kris McMillan - 08/19/2012

Thank you for the review! Our road has been called everything from a highway to a goat trail, just depends on the person. Yes the bridge is easier and faster. Hope to see you again.

San Ramon, CAUpscale Yurt on the Banks of the Smith River

Our family of 6 stayed at the Middle Fork Ranch a couple summers ago. The property is beautiful and accessible by a death-defying rope bridge over the Smith River. The rope bridge was one of the highlights of the trip for our kids! For visitors with a 4wd, there is an alternative approach from the back side of the property. There were 3 or 4 buildings on the property, but we stayed in the yurt. It was surprisingly civilized, with a full kitchen, TV, bathroom, and comfortable bedding for 6. It also had a hot tub on the porch. The grounds were spacious, and the best feature was that we were right on the river. It was safe for the kids to inner tube down short stretches of the river, and the fishing was great. Would highly recommend this property for a low-key vacation in nature, with all the amenities of home.

Just left from my second stay at The Ranch. I brought friends here last year, and couldn't wait to come back with my family.
The property is amazing--even though you are half an hour from the city and get anything you might want, you feel completely secluded and have the world to yourself, unlike most summer cabins, hotels, or campgrounds. I hardly ever saw another guest-- the cabins are far apart and hidden from each other. The cabins feel like home-- if your home has a hot tub, a river and a waterfall!
Tips: bring innertubes during the summer. The river is amazing. You can run the shallow rapids, or float lazily in several "swimming holes" all day. Bliss! -

My wife and I recently took a vacation to Northern California and didn't want to stay in any chain hotels. While searching the Web, I came across Middle Fork Ranch and made a reservation; I didn't know what to expect. We stay for two nights in the yurt and I just wasn't sure I made a good choice. There are two options, drive in on about three miles of dirt road with switch backs coming down the mountain, or park across the river and walk in across the bridge. We drove in both days, but if I stayed longer, we would only drive in on the first and last day. So we checked in and find that we have a full kitchen, stocked with coffee if we needed it, a half-dozen fresh eggs from their chickens, a grill outside, a hot tub on the deck overlooking the river, and privacy, amazing privacy. At night, sitting in the hot tub. we could hear the river rushing over a small waterfall. The stars were incredible, and the nights were cool. The bedroom had a select comfort air bed. Everything about the place was wonderful. We plan on going and spending a week in two years we liked it so much. It was close to Crescent City with an incredible drive through the redwoods. Plenty to do in the area, and at the time we were there blackberries everywhere. This place is definitely a top spot on our list and we hope to go back. Oh, yeah, there was a TV with satellite service as well, but it didn't get used much.
