A stone's throw from Verbania, the pearl of the lake, and from the border with Switzerland (Cannero, Cannobio), this small apartment of 45 square meters within the historic village of Ghiffa was completely renovated in 2012, with the artistic and delicate taste of the owner, an Italian painter and illustrator (some of the decorations that adorn the interior belong to her). Maple floor, antique oak beams, stone walls, which have been plastered only to make the rooms more comfortable and clean, the unit is part of a larger villa of the beginning of the nineteenth century (also recently renovated), but it is independent.

It is located in a...n area where no cars can access (the car park is only 200 meters far), surrounded by the silence and the peace of the Maggiore’s Riviera. A small beach is accessible by foot to less than 100 meters from the house. Several walks start in the direction of the hill. Among them, with a climb of about 15 minutes, you can reach the famous Sacro Monte (Holy Mount) of Ghiffa, since 2003 UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Through a separate entrance (about 15 meters along the small street of stone close to the property) it is possible to access a portion of the garden reserved for guests, with a gorgeous 180 degree view of Lake Maggiore.

The two rooms are organized as follows: the living room, with a little kitchen and the dining area, is equipped with a sofa bed that becomes easily a double bed; the bedroom has one single bed on the ground and a double bed suspended in midair, about 2 meters in height (not suitable for children, but very amusing for adults!).Read more

Ghiffa is an amazing place on the Lake Maggiore Riviera. It is a perfect location for those who like to relax, enjoy the lake and as well the mountain.

Lake Maggiore is a large lake located on the south side of the Alps. It is the second largest of Italy and largest of southern Switzerland. Lake Maggiore is the most westerly of the three great prealpine lakes of Italy, it extends for about 70 km between Locarno and Arona.
The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella, Villa Taranto in Verbania and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa.
The lake’s jagged banks are surrounded by the Lepontine Alps. The western bank is in Piedmont (provinces of Novara and Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) and the eastern in Lombardy (province of Varese), whereas the most northerly section extends thirteen kilometres into the canton of Ticino, where it constitutes its lowest point above sea-level as well as that of Switzerland.
Lake Maggiore weather is generally mild. It is known for its Mediterranean-like climate where tropical and sub-tropical plants can grow year-round. During winter, the lake helps to maintain a higher temperature in the surrounding region (since water releases heat energy more slowly than air). The temperatures are cooled down in summer by the breezes that blow on the water's surface changing its colour. The area enjoys nearly 2300 hours of sunshine a year and an average annual temperature of 15.5 °C. The water of the lake has a comfortable temperature of 20 to 22°C in July and August. In winter snowfall is erratic and primarily affects the higher elevations. Rainfall is heaviest in May and lowest during the winter months.

One of the most famous attraction of Ghiffa is the Special Nature Reserve of Sacro Monte della SS. TrinitĂ  of Ghiffa, established in 1987 to protect the buildings of the monumental area and promote and valorize the surrounding environment, is a striking panoramic terrace of 200 hectares of woodland overlooking Lake Maggiore.
The monumental baroque complex of the Sacred Mount within the Reserve includes the Sanctuary, three main chapels, the arcade with the Way of the Cross and the two chapels of Getsemani and of Our Lady of Sorrows.
The Sacro Monte di Ghiffa, for centuries a center of popular devotion, has always been a meeting point for fairs and open air markets, the typical atmosphere of which is recreated from June to September, every third Sunday of the month, through the Fair of the Holy Trinity.
The Reserve offers many pleasant opportunities to enjoy nature with fully equipped picnic areas, numerous trekking trails and two especially marked nature itineraries “Segni sulla pietra” (Marks on stone) and “Una Riserva nel Verde” (A Reserve in the Green).

Within a very short distance it is also possible to visit curious places such as for example the Hat Museum of Ghiffa.

  Ghiffa is a quiet, small and beautiful place. We had a relaxing week there. Michela is a very nice and helpful host. We highly recommend staying in Ghiffa, also because you do not find many tourists there, but mushrooms.

From dining in the garden overlooking the serene Lake Maggiore to advising us where to eat and offering us so much hospitality. We will never forget our holiday!   I had the pleasure of being guest of Michaela in her house in Ghiffa. It was a wonderful, peaceful and comfortable place. The garden is a little masterpiece where you can lay in the sun loosing yourself, staring at the landscape on the lake, perfect for a barbecue with friends, or family. The owner is a wonderful, warm person (and very talented artist) and she will go out of her way to make sure you have a wonderful stay. Highly recommended!
