Description from the owner

Craigengells Cottage stands alone and commands sweeping views of the surrounding ayrshire countryside. The house is on one level and was once the gardener's cottage for nearby Glentachur House.

The house is well located for exploring the Galloway Forest Park, - the largest forest park in Britain with forest drives, walking, cycling and horse-riding routes there is plenty of choice for outdoor activities. The park has recently become Europe's first official dark-sky park and is a haven for star gazers.

Golf is also a popular pursuit with Turnberry less than an hour's drive and lots of other courses in the area for all standards....Read more

      worst holiday ever

Left on 09/03/2010 for a stay in August 2010

Craigengells itself is very good, clean, comfortable, and good service provided. Big but, the area - although very nice and rural, there is nothing there to do. Girvan's tourist information centre has even closed down. The town looks very run down and derelict, the beach is so bad, even the dog didnt want to go there. We had to drive for miles either north or south in order to have anything to do other than walking. There was no fish in the rivers as it had been so dry during the summer so we couldnt even fish, (No fault of Craigengells I know, but if you cant fish and the weather is so bad you dont want to walk - it rained for most of our stay - then there is very little else to do). We came home 5 days early as we were so fed up with trying to have a good time.

      Quiet get away

Left on 08/28/2010 for a stay in August 2010

The cottage is set in a field at least a mile from the village of Barrhill (which doesn't have that many shops, so bring food with you, or the nearest sensible supermarkets are 12 miles away). Finding the drive is a bit tricky if you haven't been before, so follow the instructions.
The location is wonderful, and there are a surprising number of things to do in the Galloway Forest Park which is nearby or if the sun's out, down at the beach at Ballentrae or Girvan.
We were welcomed and shown all the things we needed to know. The 3rd bedroom is rather small, ok for kids in the bunk beds, but the other bedrooms are good sized and well furnished throughout. The conservatory also serves as the dining room and is a great additional space, with lovely views into the fields.
We can recommend this cottage to anyone who's after a quiet get away!

      our kind of holiday

Left on 08/24/2010 for a stay in August 2010

Greeted on arrival with a bottle of wine and a box chocs and shown where everything was.
Cottage was fully equiped including bed linen and towels and even chopped logs if we wanted to light the fire
Ideal position for touring or just unwinding and surrounded by fields
The only suggestion i would make is as the turning of the road is not easy to see that maybe a sign could be errected on the road
We loved the cottage and as i said its 'our kind of holiday'
