Exterior

Located on a quiet lane in Sonoma County’s famed oak tree country, these two houses, 3BR/3BA in all, are separated by herb and flower gardens along a short stone and gravel path. One, made of stucco, is a golden yellow citron color; the other, made of wood, has a cinnamon-like color. Together they evoke a relaxed, dacha-like feel – the location for a perfect country sojourn. The property is surrounded by oaks and has a small vineyard onsite. Fruit trees, including olives, dot the land, and the back yard slopes across a field toward an oak wood where a large hammock beckons in the shade. The centerpiece of the ground...s is a tall walnut tree next to the grayed picket fence that runs around the swimming pool. Benches, tables and chairs are situated everywhere, all of them seemingly positioned out of hard-won knowledge as to which direction, which view, is the best. The sounds here are quintessential country: chattering crows, humming bees, tinkling wind chimes, soughing breezes, rustling leaves and, occasionally, distant church bells. Add blossoms and herbs at every turn, and all the makings are there for an idyllic country retreat.

Interior

Citron House

A terra cotta-paved portico, with a balcony on top, runs the length of this house’s rough-finished stucco exterior. The rough finish extends inside, too, to light yellow-colored plaster walls throughout. On the first floor, the kitchen has new appliances and its antique dining table seats six. The room looks out on the garden and pool through a large bay window and a French door leads to a small back deck. The bath has a granite sink top and a shower, and there’s a fireplace in the living room. A large skylight lights up the foyer and staircase. Both second-floor bedrooms have queen beds and French doors that exit to the sunny, south-facing balcony.

Cinnamon House

You enter Cinnamon House from a vine-fringed wooden porch. The bright interior is slightly split-level, with a charming country-style kitchen set two steps up from the living room. The kitchen table seats four, and the view over the sink is out to one of the property’s great old oaks, then beyond to a golden field and woods. The living room has a rock-faced fireplace and the shower-equipped bathroom beyond is spacious and sun-drenched. A wooden staircase tightly spirals up to the second-floor bedroom, which features a queen bed, rocking chairs and a French door to a private deck overlooking the pool.Read more
