This charming one bedroom, detached house is the original 1940s stableman’s quarters for the Bette Davis estate. It is fresh, vibrant and newly refurbished while still maintaining some of its unique, original features. The cool, open living room has exposed beams, a vintage wood burning stove and original art on its walls. The house includes wireless internet and a large, 32” flat screen tv, hooked up to Apple TV
The organic GARDEN is a massive. A half-acre of grass lawn, fruit orchard at the front with vegetable garden. A saltwater pool and Jacuzzi, ping pong table and fountain with numerous outdoor s...eating and dining areas. Estate views look out toward the foothills of Mount Hollywood as they turn purple in the evening light.
The LIVING ROOM is bright and airy. The front door and main windows face the lawn, trees and hammock, and the stable block. The back windows look out over the neighboring horse paddocks and in the far distance, the LA Equestrian Center and the setting sun beyond that.
The BEDROOM is small, simple and bright, with a Custom Comfort (very comfortable) queen sized bed. There is plenty of built-in closet space and storage area. The BATHROOM has a shower and looks out toward the pool.
O’Leary’s COTTAGE is very private, located at the far end of the estate. Off street, gated PARKING is available for convenience and safety.
Rivergate is a sprawling ESTATE nestled at the foot of Griffith Park, the largest municipal park in the US. Part of Bette Davis’ Riverbottom estate, O’Leary’s Cottage was named after Humphrey Bogart’s character in Dark Victory.
We are right on the border of Los Angeles, Glendale and Burbank in an upscale residential NEIGHBORHOOD known as The Rancho. Many of the large houses have private stables and it is common to see cowboys riding in the streets. We are just a few miles from Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Atwater (two exits on the freeway, about 5 minutes). We are bicycling distance from the studios (NBC, CBS, Warner Bros, Disney, Nickelodeon …)10 min to Down Town Los Angeles, and 15 minutes to Hollywood and many other attractions.
The back gate opens to Griffith Park (website: hidden) and the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. We are walking distance to horse rental stables, four golf courses, Travel Town, LA Zoo, The Autry Museum, Pickwick ice-skating and bowling and of course the wildlife and 52 miles of hiking, bike and running trails, the LA River, many playgrounds and dog parks and lots more.
Burbank and Glendale are home to loads of shopping including the Americana (a high end outdoor mall with movie theaters, fountain, fine restaurants and events). A Pavilions supermarket is one of the finest around and well within walking distance. We also have numerous big box stores such as Best Buy, Target etc. and of course the ubiquitous supermarkets and chains; Ralphs, CVS…. All within 3 to 5 minutes’ drive.
Don’t let the rural setting and the hooting of the owls fool you, we are still in the heart of the city and you should be aware that you can sometimes hear the freeway, helicopters, and sirens typical of city living. (I mention it because it seems out of place while you lounge in the sun on the lawn feeling like you are out in the country).Read more

We arrived at 4 am and we were able to go straight to our guest house without a hitch. We were asked if there was anything that they could provide.
The location was great for our needs; a quick ride into downtown if needs be, yet removed for the peace, quiet and privacy that we needed. We were also able to take some great photos with family on the property as the perfect backdrop.
The pool and Jacuzzi are just outside. The green belt is also nice for picnics, lounging, sun and fun. Also, there are a couple of trees for shade as well as a hammock or table and chairs for lounging.
The kitchen had a small fridge, range/oven, microwave, dishwasher with eating and cooking utensils provided. The bathroom has a standing only shower and there is no counter space with a pedestal sink. The windows in the bathroom aren't huge but they could use some curtains for privacy.
There are stables right next door (currently with two horses). They were not loud or bothersome and we enjoyed having contact with them quite a bit.
The only real drawback is the lack of a paved path. You have to walk through the grass a bit (which was well maintained) to get to the guest area, so if it is wet out or raining, it may get messy.
It was such a pleasure to have Amie and Bryce to stay with us on their honey moon. I felt I had to say one thing about getting to the cabin, there is a way to walk to the cabin without crossing the lawn. It is not as direct, and takes you past Dillard’s Pool House. At one point you have large step-stones through the tall grasses and the pool deck, but it is possible in stilettos:-)
