We booked Glitter Bay because we wanted self-catering facilities for our children, a separate bedroom for our au pair, and the amenities of a hotel. This is a surprisingly difficult combination to find, but Glitter Bay offered all of this, by way of privately owned, but centrally managed complex. And it was conveniently located only 5 minutes drive to Holetown; the local shopping / town centre.
First and foremost, it is located on one of the best beaches on the best side of the island. This meant sheltered water, soft waves and a floating platform to swim out to. I don't know if the sea had been dredged, but it was totally rock-free, yet two minutes round the corner was very rocky. The beach attendant reserved the same loungers for us each day so no rushing to the beach at 6am! The sea was certainly the highlight of the trip, and we spent most of our time on the beach with the kids.
On the downside, the complex is 20 years old and traditional colonial style, which in European terms means old fashioned, compared to some of the newer developments such as Schooners Bay or Waterside which are all granite and marble. There was plenty of quarry tiles, a concrete pool etc.The apartment we stayed in (109) had been done up with limestone throughout, as had a lot of them, which was beautiful and from a decor point of view, we couldn't have been more comfortable, but the communal areas had merely been maintained not updated. In particular the pool was a little tired. We still swam in it, but it could do with being ripped out and replaced.
Included in the booking was a (one-way) transfer, starter kit of basics in the fridge, daily maid service (6 days per week) and BVS - the management co - were always on hand for any questions down to local restaurant recommendations. The beach bar was handy for a virgin Pina Colada and a chicken wrap, and the daily maid service was great.
All the nice restaurants are located somewhere along the coast road that stretches from Bridgetown in the South, to Speightown in the North (it probably goes to a lot more places, but this is as far as we ventured!). Next time, i would hire a car as it would be quite difficult to get lost and much more convenient for us. We got the bus once, which was an adventure for the kids, but it wasn't ideal for supermarket shopping to stock the fridge, and there were no local 'Tesco Express's' to nip to for a pint of milk, so invariably we relied on taxi's, and the infamous Perry the taxi driver was certainly accommodating.
Lonestar is a short walk away on the beach, and a totally delicious restaurant for lunch or dinner. The Cliffs is another one that you have to visit at least once, but is pricey. Scarlets and Just Grillin were two great little restaurants, not on the beach, which were not just targeted at tourists - we would definitely return to them too.
We took a day trip to The Crane on the South West of the island; spectacular setting and facilities, although it was remote, and with the size of waves hit the pink beach, I would not stay here with a young family. Our boys were 3 and 1 when we went to Barbados and Glitter Bay was just perfect - we will definitely be returning in the future. -

Excellent service and accommodation right from the offset. Driver waiting for us when we arrived at the airport, swift and polite journey to Glitter Bay. Apartment 109 superb. Right on the best beach on the west coast. Minutes away from all the best restaurants. Extremely polite staff through out. Self catering holiday with all the benefits of a top class hotel. Apartment cleaned thoroughly and beds made daily. We would not go anywhere else when visiting Barbados. Simply the best. You will not meet nicer people than Marilil & Joe Troulan who run the whole operation.
