Grand Manan,the Queen of an island archipelago, in New Brunswick, Canada is located at the entrance to the Bay of Fundy. The ferry leaving Black's Harbor is an enjoyable, one and a half hour ride to the Island. You may see whales and seals along the way. Grand Manan is home to approximately 2800 folks who make their living from the sea. The Island is approximately 13 miles long and 7 miles wide at its widest point. Really a unique experience. All the comforts of home with lots of local culture. Bring your camera, binoculars, hiking boots, favorite book and knitting. Scenery is spectacular with lots of birds and wildlife.

My wife and I and an adult daughter stayed at Swallowtail Overlook during august 2009 and were absolutely delighted with the accommodations, the location, and the relaxing time on Grand Manan. We had vacationed on Grand Manan some 20 years before and it was great to return. Swallowtail Overlook, its view, its cleanliness, its furnishings and kitchenware made this visit the best ever. We recommend this cottage to anyone because of its ideal location and all the attributes I mentioned above. My wife appreciated that the cottage has a flagpole in a very visible location, and an american flag for us to fly. :-)

Hi Bob,thanks for your quick and very flattering review of Swallowtail Overlook.. I really do enjoy knowing how much many of our guests appreciate our vacation home. We have been very fortunate and are thankful to have so many caring & considerate guests who treat it like their own home. Even to repairing little items and adjusting something if necessary !
BTW, I'm glad your wife enjoyed my flagpole, however some Islanders may have been confused as they usually assume I'm "on Island" when they see the flags flying,especially the Norwegian flag,

This home may well be the best home to stay at on Grand Manan Island if you are looking for a bright, roomy 4 bedroom home, on picturesque overlook. It had every convenience we had hoped for including wireless internet. Location was amazing, looking out over the bay, where the ferry lets off, as well as a fantastic view of Swallowtail lighthouse. From the deck, you could see whales spouting in the distance and seals along the shore. How cool is that? The gentle breezes kept the heat down and watching the many sea gulls soar just overhead was a real treat. You can hike along the trails direct from the house or drive to one of the many picturesque parks and vistas around the island. There are many fine restaurants on the island and great sea kayaking right near by in town. We are avid bird watchers and found many different species around the island as well as a wonderful excursion that takes you out by boat to a live puffin colony where you can get right up next to them by sitting in a bird blind. This was the highlight of the trip for us. We also had good luck viewing breaching humpbacked whales from another excursion from the same tour operator: Sea Watch Tours. Also many different varieties of wildflowers around the island always gave us something new to look at while hiking. We stayed for a week and since we had perfect weather all week, it allowed us to try just about everything that there was to do. We cycled around the nearby parts of the island and also enjoyed the Saturday farmers market, again near by our accomodations. All in all I would highly recommend Swallowtail Overlook for a great location to finish off the days touring by enjoying the large wrap-around deck from which you can watch the lights of the town come on after the sun goes down. Since it faces east, this home is perfect for watching the amazing sunrises each day as well as the moon rises at night. Owner is very friendly and called us to ensure that everything was up to our expectations.

Paul was extremely helpful during the reservation process. He kept telling me I was going to love the house. When we arrived we were just blown away. Everything about Swallowtail Overlook so exceeded our expectations. The view is nothing less than spectacular. Seals in the cove and on our first day we saw a whale from the picture window in the living room! Outstanding. Grand Manan is absolutely beautiful. From Swallowtail Overlook to South Head and everything in between. It really is a magical place. And by all means, go whale watching while on the island. The people we talked to that went whale watching other places talked about the three or four whales they saw -- we quit counting after ten -- no kidding, and that was in the fog. It honestly could have been dozens. There is not a single thing we did not like about our stay at Swallowtail Overlook or on the island. My wife, myself, and my Mom and Dad all agree it was one of the best vacations we have ever taken. Go, enjoy the island life for a week or two! You won't regret it.
