Thank you so very much to Christine. We booked the lodge as part of our honeymoon tour of New Zealand. From the initial enquiry, many months beforehand, right through to the time of our trip, Christine was happy to answer our many questions including how to organise our travel to and from the Island!
We were also suplied with very useful literature via email which covered everything we needed to know during our stay, including details of all local bars, restaurants and shops.
A wonderful experience and we would highly recommend!! We hope to visit again very soon...Response from John and Christine Erkkila - 01/31/2013

Thanks so much for your kind words Melissa. I hope your travels in NZ were fabulous, despite the dodgy weather!

Bay Lodge Cottage is the perfect place for a getaway. It is private, quiet, and has spectacular scenery. The service is excellent, and everything that you need is either provided for or close by.
The cottage has a beautiful eco friendly element to it, including the soaps, toiletries, and even a small compost bin. It had a wide range of magazines (up to date ones!), Dvd's, games, and also some books.
It is a little bit hard to get to the property without a 4 wheel drive, but there are loads of rental options, or you can arrange a transfer. Once there, we were able to walk down to the beach and then hitchhike easily around the island.
I hope to get back to Bay Lodge Cottage in the future!! -

Alles in allem: sehr empfehlenswert!

Thanks for taking the time to post a review, and we appreciate your feedback and info for future guests. Great Barrier Island is a great place to visit as long as people are aware that it is remote, rugged in places and very much off the beaten track - but that is indeed its charm!
Take care and hope to have you visit us again sometime. -

We loved Bay Lodge Cottage. A lot of thought has gone in to its design and how it's set up for guests. The private road means you get a feeling of being totally private. A 4WD makes the road pretty easy to navigate.
The blurb talks about dolphins - and dolphins we got! A huge pod of them one day, and we scrambled along the bay to get really close to them.Response from John and Christine Erkkila - 12/07/2012

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review Sue. I am delighted you enjoyed the cottage and that the dolphins put on their usual displays for you.

We had a wonderful relaxing time at the cottage over the weekend, thankyou so much for being so understanding about our need to reschedule the bookings.
Cottage was immaculate and what a perfect location, dolphins came to visit us and we even enjoyed the adventure of driving in and out. Our problem was that we were torn between just spending time at the cottage and exploring the island. We settled for a happy mixture of both.
I Would not hesitate to recommend the cottage for anyone seeking a relaxing weekend away and it was perfect for celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary, Hopefully we will get a chance to re-visit again soon.

The cottage was lovely and warm from the fire that was burning when we arrived, and all of the care and attention that Christine provided made the weekend one to remember. It was exactly what we needed and it was a great blend of adventure and relaxation. The walk down to the beach was a great breath of fresh air and the remoteness of the location provided the peace and quiet we were looking for.

Picture perfect cottage at the end of a private driveway with all the necessities provided; fresh flowers in the vases, basic supplies in the fridge, extensive ocean views and a telescope to maximise the view. Relatively convenient to airport and island facilities. Endangered birds at the bottom of the garden. A perfect base for exploring Great Barrier Island and to return to each evening after a hard day walking the hills.

AucklandExceeded expectations
Left on 11/03/2011 for a stay in November 2011
We expected it to be perfect as we could clearly identify on the website details of location, facilities etc. The reviews from other travelers confirmed that we could expect the best.
Great Barrier Island itself is the King of holiday places, in close proximity to auckland. Bay Cottage is the jewel in that crown.
We had considered going from auckland to Queensland or Whitsundays or similar for our short break. Cheap airfares and cheap skyscraper accommodation were an initial attraction to going further afield. But then we came to our senses and realised that a 30min flight to Great Barrier Island made a lot more sense...and finding Bay Lodge sealed it.
The 4WD along the track behind the locked gate was a 'safe adventure' that helped peel back worries and thoughts about work or other worldly concerns.
It was our first experience of eating mulberry fruit straight off the tree and the Eden-like garden is set up to bear different fruits throughout the year. Watch our for feijoas, loquat at other times of the year, and did I spy a young banana tree?Response from John and Christine Erkkila - 11/10/2011

The driveway in was a bit of a task but once there was well worth it. However we were advised that a 4WD was needed to get to the cottage. What a magical place. Made to feel very welcome with goodies pack upon arrival. Was a nice touch having the fire set up for the first night so only had to light it. Area was very peaceful and private with amazing views. The cottage was very cosy and clean with all the amenities you need was supplied for our 4 night stay. We had a lovely relaxing holiday and enjoyed visiting the different areas around Great Barrier Island.

Hi Karen and thanks for taking the time to write a review. Yes the track is definitely 4WD and its really great to make sure that people are aware of that before they get to the island. But once you are in, its that track that gives the cottage its remoteness and seclusion. Most of our guests feel its worth the drive in, and so very glad you agreed! Take care and we hope to have you back on the island sometime.

My girlfriend and I splurged on two nights at the bay lodge cottage while on great barrier island and were incredibly happy we did. The house was beautifully decorated, romantic and incredibly private. We ended up hiring a taxi to drop us off at the cabin. Although we were nervous about not having a rental car, the transportation worked out perfectly - and it was so nice to be isolated in our private piece of paradise without a car or any place to rush off to.
The food left for our arrival was amazing, and when complemented by herbs, aloe, chard and plums growing all around us we were in heaven. All logistical interactions were easy - John and Christine were very responsive to emails and very helpful as we were planning the trip. On the second day we ran into them on the beach since they were anchored offshore on their yacht. After inviting us aboard, they even sent us back to the cottage's bbq with a lobster in hand - such an incredible experience.Response from John and Christine Erkkila - 08/15/2011

Dear Robert. Thank you so much for your delightful and detailed review, which I am sure other travellers will find useful - especially your comments about transport. It was great to meet you both and we hope to see you back at the Barrier another day! Kind regards John & Christine.

Going to Great Barrier Island is an adventure in itself - the 5 seater flight over the Hauraki Gulf, landing at an airport in almost a field and realizing you've gone back 30 years in time to when auckland was a slower, kinder place.
A four-wheel rental is a must for getting to the cottage as the driveway in is a rough but safe track. Don't be put off, that's exactly what it takes to ensure you reach the most private and peaceful little spot of paradise. It takes a couple of days of being on the island and seeing how cut off it is to realize the subtle but significant effort that has gone into ensuring the cottage has just the right balance of mod cons, luxurious little additions (lovely soaps, linens, magazines, good quality continental breakfast and snack provisions, hand potted dinnerware by a local) and is impeccably clean and comfortable.
The view from any room, be it the garden, lush bush or the sparkling sea is just picture perfect. It's close enough to the beach to walk down a track or take the 4W-drive on lots of little excursions to various other spots of interest on the island.
All communication with the hosts was friendly and professional, with loads of information and all contingencies covered. Thoroughly recommended.Response from John and Christine Erkkila - 03/23/2011

This is such a beautiful location, private, quiet, beach access, everything you would want in a relaxing holiday! Walks and treks are close by (everything is really) and while the road up to the house is a little scary but no worries in a 4WD. It was a perfect place for our honeymoon, after three weeks of family and friends this is the ultimate escape. Crayfish, dolphins in the bay, birds and sunshine, we'll definitely be back!

Secluded and intimate location for a couple, overlooking a beautiful bay with 1 or 2 boats at anchor. Dolphins at play in the late afternoon. Down at the private beach, baby oyster catchers and anxious parents. The road to the cottage added an extra dimension of excitement. A break to remember.

The Bay Lodge Cottage was so peaceful, relaxing and well appointed, that it was very little time before we were rested and enjoying the surroundings. Looking out to such a fantastic view over the bay was truly memorable and the envy of our friends that we show photos of our holiday to. Very friendly hosts made the stay hassle free and we look forward to returning to the Cottage in the near future.

A fantastic experience. Almost exactly an hour after leaving auckland airport we were standing on the deck of the cottage gazing out to sea. Wonderful scenery and the immaculate cosy cottage had everything we wanted. The view from the deck is to die for and the bed is so comfortable it was hard to get out of it in the morning. We loved the bush setting - all we could hear was bird song! I really want to make a point of going back again.
