Grottaferrata, about 10 miles from the Rome Capitol, is the top residential area of the Castelli Roman. This area, to the southeast of the Eternal City, has long been the playground of Rome's rich and famous jet set. As far back as the emperors, then medieval barons, then Renaissance princes and modern captains of industry have all appreciated the many deep blue lakes, dense forests, mild winters and cool summers of this region whose slightly higher altitude has always allowed idle vacationers to keep an eye on their palaces in the city, laid out in the valley below as far as the eye can see. Today the towns of the Castelli Romani are prized for their produce: DOC wines such as Frascati, strawberries, peaches, meats, fish, flowers and more. Although fairly popular as weekend day trip destinations (especially for Romans who come to dine well), the towns don't have a tourist feel.
Public transportation is abundant and consists of trains (25 minutes from Termini Station to Frascati, 18 minutes from Termini to Tor Vergata) and buses, which leave from the Anagnina station of the Rome Subway. The apartment is very close to a bus stop, and buses are quite frequent; the best way to explore the area and to reach the train stations is, however, by car.
