Medieval construction methods meet 21st Century styling and amenities right here on the northern Sonoma coast! Pilar is an elegant example of Post and Beam construction. The house was built by local artisan and Timberpeg builder Michael Thomas, with a lot of hands-on participation from the owners. If you appreciate architecture, you will enjoy Pilar’s tantalizing curves as they wrap around the rugged strength... inherent in this traditional exposed timber construction technique.
Clothing the beautiful “bones” is the timeless appeal of the Arts-and-Crafts style. Almost like accessories for an outfit, there are a number of decorative but very functional details in every room. There is beautiful glass in the doors, rich fir accents and trim, and great photography and other art. Pilar allows one to enjoy modern day, high-end accommodations in a world-class destination location while at the same time evoking the fabled days of Art Deco and martinis! It seems someone wants to remind you that there is time to truly relax and appreciate one’s company and surroundings.
The main floor contains an open kitchen-dining-living area. The kitchen is beautifully equipped and provides workspace for the creative cooks in your group. You can also grill outdoors on the patio with the gas BBQ. The living room keeps cozy with a gas fireplace, and includes a great audio/visual set-up with satellite TV/DVD and music/CD/MP3 system.
The bedroom has a queen bed, and the adjoining bathroom sports a claw-foot tub with hand-held shower.
Upstairs you first come to the office, graciously appointed with a work desk, a comfy futon for sitting or sleeping (makes into a queen bed).
Next is the master suite; more like a retreat room, really. There is a sitting area, gas fireplace, television, queen bed, and a gorgeous bathroom.
For outdoor fun there is a large hot tub on the patio off the dining area.
And Pilar is just steps away from one of the most dramatic walking trails ANYwhere! The bluff trail at Sea Ranch leads north in a few minutes to Gualala Point Park. The northern end of the bluff trail is a very large sandy beach which has the powerful Pacific on one side, and the usually tranquil Gualala River on the other other. At almost any time of day you can enjoy many kinds of birds along the trail and the shorelines. If you’re sharp-eyed, you may catch a glimpse of a river otter, or maybe a migrating whale will spout and show off! Deer and rabbits forage nonchalantly in the Park meadows and woods, and throughout the Sea Ranch Golf Links which meander along the north edge of The Ranch. Rounding out the local wildlife might be raccoons, skunks, foxes, and many birds of prey. Call soon to reserve your time in this amazing place.

We stayed at Pilar over the 2012 new year holiday with another family. The home was in surprisingly good shape (rentals in Sea Ranch can be dated) and the architecture was really neat. We would definitely stay here again.
Tanks to Coasting Home for working with the owners to accommodate us!

Pilar is a great house if you like to cook and sleep with a kitchen that was well equipped and nicely decorated bedrooms. It is also near the bluff trail which is great for hiking. However, there are no curtains in the living room, so there is no privacy at night as cars drive around the cul de sac and trying to watch TV during daylight was difficult. Also the view in the living room was a bulldozer next door. Relaxing outside was not comfortable as there is only a small deck with no chairs of any kind and the hot tub is in full view of the neighbors who have second story windows overlooking it. In addition, the downstairs toilet overflowed after flushing and flooded the bathroom, the entry and part of the bedroom. We ended up spending multiple hours cleaning it up, then washing, drying and folding every towel in the house. During the remaining time we were there, I turned off the water flow to the toilet after every flush completed. Overall, considering the cost of renting this house, it was not the relaxing time I anticipated. I would not recommend it and left feeling cheated. Read more
Dear Guest, I thank you for the frank assessment of the experience you had at Pilar. Constructive observations are appreciated and will serve to guide ongoing improvements to the home. The toilet issue was very regretable and as was mentioned when we spoke initially, your quick actions were really above and beyond the call. We hope we will have the opportunity to host you in the future.
Relaxing, but the bed was way too soft...

Beautiful interior, nice location, close to bluff. Well appointed generally. Beds much too soft, however, causing actual back spasms, so I won't return unfortunately. Also, there were no curtains on massive front glass windows, making for absolutely no privacy at night. But otherwise, very nice

An abosolute dream of a place

From the moment we drove up, spying some critter friends like two deer we affectionately named Liza and Judy (a mom and her doe babe), we were in heaven. The house is perfectly appointed with a beautiful open kitchen/living room/dining room, an incredible downstairs bathroom with a clawfoot tub, a magnificent master bedroom upstairs with its own fireplace and two person shower. Gorgeous craftsmanship, nicely stocked pantry, and a wonderfully relaxing hot tub.
if you are like us, overworked, stressed, need to get out of the city: Pilar is for you. No cel phone reception. The only sound you will hear are the tweeting of birds and not the tweeting of your phone.
Steps from the house a path to the cliffside trail along the Sea Ranch coastline. And from there, we viewed what we thought was the most beautiful sunset. Perfect romance.
Heaven. We miss you, Pilar.

We love this home we have been staying here for the last three years. My
brother built it so it is extra special for us. The owners have beautifully
decorated it with love. The location is awesome, the trails are right outside the
front door to the ocean and the forest.

This beautiful home was a respite from the day-to-day world. The house was well-stocked with linens and reading material. Only challenge was getting the TVs and DVD players to work properly but this may be due to operator error.
No quirks! How nice to have a rental that was like new.
