Oakland, CaliforniaNice house, but
Left on 05/27/2013 for a stay in May 2013
My wife and I rented this house for two nights. The house is charming and well located and the local manager, Lorena Fuentes is terrific, but there are a few quirky things you should know. First, it is extremely vertical, its entrance on the street level, the main living flow up quite a few stairs and the master bedroom/bath is up a narrow spiral staircase, with a landing in between. I'm six feet tall and on the landing between the first level and second, I could not stand up straight. Also, it is very difficult to carry suitcases up/down the stairs. I suffered back issues before I got to the house ( Lorena was amazingly helpful ) so negotiating the stairs was a problem for me. In addition, the bed in the master was not very comfortable. It was soft, with virtually no support. The water pressure in the master bath was poor and the floors were squeaky, so much so you couldn't walk on them without waking someone sleeping in bed. That said, the salon was beautiful, with stone walls, hardwood floors and three french doors facing the square. We loved spending time there reading and relaxing. Beware though, it is noisy in the evening, when fairly loud music is playing from the restaurant below. There is plenty of room for a larger group and the kitchen was well organized for our visit with fruit and water.

This home is as spectacular as it looks in the pictures. If you like design, art, architecture , you'll fall in love with this place. It's location on San Fernando plaza, right in the middle of town, enabled us to take part nightly, in all the cultural richness that Guanajuato has to offer. This town is an undiscovered gem, and Lorena and Sote helped us make the most of it.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Guanajuato (Gto.)--stop right now. La Malaguena is the only place to stay, if you truly want to experience Gto. at it's best. I stayed there with my husband and three children (young adults) for a week; it's elegant Mexican decor lingered in our minds for weeks!
The location: Absolutely ideal, could not get any better--located right in the heart of Plaza San Fernando. Surrounded by tourist-friendly restaurants, European-style cafes, eateries and other picturesque locales, in a charming tree-lined courtyard. The Plaza has a youthful atmosphere, and yet cultural sophistication; you'll often hear live musicians playing boleros, rancheras, classical guitar and jazz. Since Gto. is a city to stroll and driving a car is almost a nuisance, the location is perfect. By foot, it's a few minutes away from el centro historico, the majestic Teatro Juarez, Mercado Hidalgo, Jardin de La Union, Museo de la Casa de Diego Rivera, baroque churches, Alhondiga de Granaditas and the prestigious Universidad de Guanajuato. It's also great if you want to experience touring Gto.'s twisted maze of streets and zig-zag alleyways. Additionally, the neighborhood is extremely safe; cops are constantly patroling the area.
La Malaguena: It's a work of art! The gardens, crumbling rock walls, terra-cotta tile floors, high ceilings, spacious rooms, old wooden doors, antique furniture and vibrant colored decor recaptures the colonial essence Gto. provides. There wasn't any part of the house which we didn't like. The house itself was an attraction--everyone picked their favorite spot and spent hours drawing, reading, or just relaxing: my daughter loved the library, one of my sons made the balcony over looking the plaza his own--my other son napped peacefully on the deck patio, while my husband and I fought over the kitchen. However, during the night we met at the roof top terrace, overlooking the entire town--it's a real vantage point--and got a full sense of Gto.'s unique landscape. The house was incredibly clean, Sote the housekeeper does a magnificent job.
Service:
Maria answers all your questions about the property and goes out of her way to make sure you arrive safely to La Malaguena; she'll email you directions, instructions and provides phone numbers to reach her. Additionally, Maria has a property administrator named Lorena, she is very friendly and filled with character; she decorates the house with beautiful flowers before your arrival, she'll wait patiently for you (even when your flight is delayed) to hand you the keys and give you further instructions. If any problem arises, no matter how trivial it is, she'll arrive to the house in minutes. The best part, she is the best tour guide! Better than a tour guide handbook.
Would I go again? Yes. Do I recommend it? Yes. Would you love it? Yes. -

This house was everything I dreamed of when I booked it for Christmas with my family. It overlooks a wonderful plaza where there is always something happening. Every evening we would stroll from our door and find wandering minstrels and entertainment on street corners. Inside the house is a treasure trove of beautifully chosen artworks and lush plants. Everywhere you looked there was something special and interesting. There were many lovely nooks to read, have a morning coffee or an evening drink or just daydream. The roof terrace was a special place for us. The house is beautifully clean and well maintained and both the manager and the gardener/housekeeper were wonderful to deal with. We felt it was a privilege to to be able to share, if only briefly, in the magic of Guanajuato. If I did not live on the other side of the world I would be a regular visitor.

La Malaguena, situated above Plaza de San Fernando, is a perfect location for walking excursions in Guanajuato by day and festive, cultural events in the plaza by night. The house is unique and interesting, the staff is helpful and informative, and the views from the rooftop terrace are fantastic. Each night we enjoyed margaritas on the terrace while listening to guitarists play and sing with crowds of locals gathered in the plaza and then serenading through the adjacent callejones. Bring ear plugs if you want to sleep before about 11 p.m., but things quiet down quickly after that. La Malaguena offers a unique and authentic lodging experience in Guanajuato.

My husband and I have stayed in this beautiful casa twice; we just returned home October 10, 2011. We are reluctantly writing our review only because we wish we could keep this secret to ourselves. Once in awhile you find a treasure and wish it were not revealed. This house on the Plaza is a gem. Even if you do nothing else but sit in front of the veranda and watch the people strolling, listen to the local musicians, smell the delicious odors wafting up through open doors from restaurants below you would have a beautiful experience of Guanajuato.

If I get a chance to return to Guanajuato, and I hope that I do, I am staying at La Malaguena, hands down. This is a most incredible house, most wonderful location - central to everything! It was spotlessly clean, absolutely beautifully decorated, and Lorena, who manages the house, served as our (delightful) guide for two straight days! She showed us parts of Gto that we would never have found on our own, special things that insiders know. She took us out into the country side where we ate a restaurant where the Gto families eat on Sundays - wonderful! We went to a pottery shop off the beaten path - what a treat! Etc, etc!
A couple of things you should know about the house: a spiral staircase leads to one of the bedrooms. Not something a person with bad balance wants to attempt. A third bedroom has steps to it that are rather oddly made - slightly smaller than your feet, not something that young children or grown ups with bad balance will want to attempt. There is a bedroom on the main floor that has a bathroom close by, which would be the option for the two groups I have mentioned.
The patio and upper deck are something out of a movie - spectacular.
All in all: If you are going to Gto, you owe it to yourself to stay in this house - you won't be disappointed. -

Fabulous place in a wonderful city. An artistically pleasing, comfortable home is the very heart of this fascinating city...at an unbelievalbe value. Enough rooms and terraces for six to be comfortable. Full kitchen and close to many markets and eating options. Can't say enough positive.

Maria and Gordon's home possesses a rare understated sense of beauty and a generous spirit of hospitality.
From our arrival meeting Lorena and Sote (and getting the grand tour of the house and great tips of things to do during our stay), through to the beautiful touches of flowers, fruit and supplies, to the amazing location in Plaza San Fernando, and the many vistas the house offers (particularly the roof top garden and its breath-taking view of Guanajuato). Their home was a precious gem during a month spent enjoying the many delights of Mexico.
My only regret about our stay - we only had three nights here, a week minimum would be better so you can relax and enjoy the delights of both the town and this divine home! -

My wife and I are renting more when we travel these days. We find that we simply have better accommodations that way – larger, quieter, more personality, etc. On our second trip to Guanajuato, we decided to rent instead of a hotel, but we still wanted to be near the city center. I found this property listed on Tripadvisor and booked it for 5 nights. Maria, via email, made the entire rental process easy. The house was exactly where we wanted to be (Plaza San Fernando is both lovely and active with several cafés) and we'd have an entire house for the same price as a hotel. What we didn't expect was the house itself. I can't describe what a gorgeous property this is. The rooftop garden/terrace is worth the stay alone.
Lorena, the property manager, is personable, helpful and always a phone call away. Her English is excellent, so we had every confidence we'd be taken care of if any problem arose.
Note: Although there are three bedrooms, one is more like a day bed area off the living room and under the creaky wooden floors of the master bedroom above. Another is basically a loft (with walls) above the kitchen, so sleepers must go downstairs and through the dining room to get to a bath. Bedroom-wise, the house is perfect for 2 in the master suite and good for 2 more in the loft bedroom. Anyone in the third bedroom had better sleep very soundly. Also, ground to roof, this house covers 3 floors, including a spiral staircase, so anyone who has trouble with stairs should probably stay elsewhere.
We had several friends staying close by and found the house perfect for entertaining a small group.
I can't imagine staying anywhere else when we return. -

We loved Malaguena!! The house itself was enchanting! Lorena gave us a wonderful introduction to the place along with some of the history which made our stay even more interesting. Sote provided excellent cleaning services and we never even knew she was there. When we ran out of hot water, Lorena had it fixed immediately. The location is excellent. We love being in the heart of Plaza San Fernando, a vibrant plaza full of restaurants and entertainment. The interesting thing is that although the house is right smack on the Plaza where a lot is going on, it is very quiet inside the house. So you have the best of both worlds. Fabulous place!!

We had the good luck to stay in this house for 2 whole weeks. Lorena, the property manager met us exactly according to plan at the fountain on the Plaza San Fernando. She gave us a very thorough orientation to the house. The house exceeded our expectations. Everything we needed was supplied - the kitched was stocked with the essentials - like coffee, orange juice - a beautiful bowl of fresh fruit - there was even beer in the fridge. The location of the house is perfect - walking distance to pretty much everywhere we wanted to go. The Plaza San Fernando is probably the most picturesque plaza in a town of one beautiful plaza after another.
Sote, the housekeeper/gardiner was wonderful... I wish I could have brought her home with me!
The house has a lot of stairs and is definitely not appropriate for elderly folks or for toddlers. But if you are physically fit and looking for an experience where you can really feel like you are part of the community the Casa Malaguena is a great choice. -

We stayed for a week in Maria & Gordon's home to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. The location of La Malaguena right on Plaza de San Fernando was stunning. The house itself has so many interesting points of view but the highlight is sitting right in front of the window/balcony and watching the happenings right on the Plaza. The experience is a feast for the senses. Watching old, young, families, enjoying the bright colors, listening to spontaneous music and singing; smelling the heavenly aromas from the local restaurants. We loved it all and will definitely return to this unique home.
