GUJAN MESTRAS The oyster-farming capital of the area, this town is set between the vineyards of South West France, the Landes of Gascogne and the beaches of the forest and the beaches of the Bay of Arcachon. Gujan-Mestras, with its seven ports is a town of passion, where quality of life is the watchword. Admirably combining indispensable economic development with the upholding of its traditions - particularly maritime - the town has managed to keep its boat-building yards and its crafts and oyster-farming activities. The natural sites are protected, and well-being and camaraderie are omnipresent. Every year, Gujan Mestras has it?s famous ?Larros en fête?, foire aux huîtres (oyster fair) who welcomes over 120000 people. In and around Gujan Mestras, you can go for a swim at La Hume beach, visit the 7 picturesque ports, go for a walk down Larros port jetty, visit the 14th century church, walk or cycle the charming parks and trails and the botanical garden, the famous boatyards, and of course, la maison de l?huitre (the oyster house). There is also a lot of children?s orientated activities in place, such as the aqualand, the coccinelle which is an animal and leasure park, the kid park, adventure island. There is also a golf course, tennis, squash, badmington, donkey rides, outings in electric mini-boats at the ?petit port?, paint ball, walking and horse riding, parapenting, water skiing, diving, the oyster road and oyster tasting and why not try your luck at the casino. Everything is designed here to satisfy inhabitants and holiday-makers, with a variety of facilities on offer: culture centre, cinema, multipurpose events hall, arts centre, skating rink, sports centre. There are a lot of activities available in Gujan Mestras and one of its greatest asset is the Aqualand, 8 hectares of water orientated games and attractions that will amuse all the family. There are shaded picnic areas on the outside of the aquatic park, so make the most of it and spend the whole day there. There is also a Kid Park, specially designed for 2 to 12 years old. This magical island, has a swimming pool with a pirate ship in it, an enchanted river that you can ride onto in a canoe, bouncy castles, trampoline, the flying chairs, the octopus and many more attractions. The great thing about the kids parc, is that you pay your entry and all the activities are free of charge, except for the fireman game (le tir pompier) where you get one free turn but have to pay if you want to do more. The parc animalier de la coccinelle is a mini farm with 800 rare, surprising, unusual and familiar animals to discover in 4 hectares of shaded park. In the mini-farm, you can even jump over the railings to approach, touch, stroke, cuddle and feed the animals. Your children may also bottle-feed the lambs, calves and piglets at different times of the day. All the games and entertainment are free and you may take as many turns as you like : merry-go-round, miniature train, bouncy castles, slide, roundabout, tricycle and BMX track, clown and magic shows, ping-pong, etc...There are hot water games too!!! There is a snack-bar on the premises, but you can use the picnic areas and bring your own food. The parc de loisirs CAP33 at Le Port de la Hume, is a very popular place for sport orientated people. There, you can do kayaking , wind surfing or rowing and play squash, golf, volley ball or test your skills at archery, rock climbing or hiking and learn to dance hip-hop, African dance and many more?.. There are Kids clubs at the beach of la Hume in July and August.
