34059High Quality, Affordable, Pleasant Home with Easy Beach access
Left on 02/14/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We just returned from renting this unit, and have it fresh in mind. My five star rating represents that the house is just as advertised, tastefully and comfortably decorated, is in excellent repair and in a desirable location. It was clean, clean, clean. We have stayed in far grander villas than this relatively modest home, so the rating does not mean you will be overawed by architectural grandeur or stunning grounds; it just means that the relationship between quality and expense is excellent, and the amenities are high grade.
The unit is located on the land-side of the beach road, upstairs and easily reached from convenient driveway parking. The lanai on that side contains a table for dropping off groceries, etc. (more important than you might think!), plenty of room for shedding shoes and sandals, and a few chairs for a chat. Our group of five adults found the large and well-appointed kitchen, and the comfortably furnished living room a gracious base of operations. There was plenty of room for all to kibitz at day's end in the kitchen space even while some were preparing dinner. The kitchen is half of the large front area of the house, with the living room area in the other half, divided by a thoughtful pass-through wall accessible to an electric outlet for charging phones, iPads, etc. By the end of our eight days this surface was a happy jumble of everyone's sunglasses, phones, books, etc. The wireless internet was strong and worked flawlessly (nice for those who may have to work remotely for a bit). In all rooms there are lovely, well-chosen canvas-print giclee images to remind you, even at night, of beautiful local sights that quickly become dear. A small stereo (subwoofer and two small left and right speakers) handles CDs and has an iPod dock.
As the owner reports, screens are in good shape. All interior finishes and furniture are fresh and well-chosen. The bedrooms could benefit from softer mood lighting, but we can see that the owner is constantly making small improvements and have no doubt this will be among the next. The bedroom arrangement is not easy to discern from the photos. They are ranged toward the rear down a short central hallway. Moving back from the living room/kitchen, immediately on the left is the bathroom shared by the two bedrooms across the hall (doors on the right). One of those has windows on one wall, while the rearmost has windows on side and back. In the left rear, the other corner bedroom has its own bath and access to the rear lanai which, like the front lanai, is under cover and runs the width of the house, with chairs and table. All rooms have well-functioning ceiling fans. The floors are a delightful light-colored and clean-feeling bamboo finish. The bathrooms have a very pleasant rounded river-stone inlay that give your feet a nice little massage, a break from the usual flat-foot feet of shoeless Hawaiian barefoot living.
I must put in a special word of praise for the bedding. All mattresses are of very high quality, and the bedding itself is very high quality white cotton. Towels are plentiful and fresh, including beach towels.
There is not an ocean view, but when the surf is up you can hear its distant roar from the bedrooms. After a rain, the mountain view from the rear lanai rewards you with a freshly streaming waterfall.
A very short walk to the left down the grass-shouldered road there is a publicly eased beach access (ignore the discouraging signs; they truthfully label it a "private road" and could be mistaken as forbidding entry, which is not the case) that puts you shortly on a glorious, long stretch of beach. Walk to your left around the point to get out of any wind. Stunning views from the beach of "Bali Hai", huge and craggy volcanic domes majestic in the distance.
This little gem is tucked among rather grand beach houses. As usually is true, any weaknesses are linked strongly to its strengths: Being near the end of the road, it is away from the "action" (so to speak) of Hanalei, just ten minutes to the south. But that means you actually can walk to Ke'e Beach as several of us did several times. In just a few minutes' drive you will be at the Kalalau trail head, making the rigorous day hike to Hanakapi'ai Falls very convenient to start early in the day.
The real estate agent was tremendously responsive and pleasant. Congratulations to the owners for their thoughtfulness and care that has created a great little refuge. -

HawaiiProperty Owner Post
Left on 10/19/2011 for a stay in January 2010
Hello!
I appreciate the last review of our home. Just wanted to write a follow up email to the last post. We appreciate the feedback! We have replaced all screens and and louvers in our home during the guests stay. We do have our property on quarterly pest control, and had pest control called about the guests complaint on flying nats. Unfortunately this was out of our control due to the humid weather and rare lack of trade winds, pest control had let us know they had many complaints about these little bugs and spraying would not help, but rather they come out once or twice a year when the weather gets very hot and humid. A few things we have upgraded also at our home is our TV, just replaced with a nice flat screen, we have new screen doors, new linens, and have added some great new furniture pieces... We pride ourselves on making the home the best possible and look forward to our guests coming back year after year! So far, we have a great return guest rate and many very happy people!
Much aloha! -

Los Angeles / Orange CountyCaution when renting this unit
Left on 09/10/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We stayed for almost a month, June -July, at this home. The location was what we had hoped for, jungle atmosphere, near Tunnels, and truly an idealic setting. The management company was very responsive to our concerns. The concerns were as follows: Tremendous amount of flying beetles and bug droppings in the unit. We requested another cleaning to remove the droppings on the cupboards, Spent most nights kiiling them off the ceilings and cleaning them out. The screens were broken, torn, and windows cranks on some units not operable..broken. We used maksing tape to close up the tears. The mgmt company was very responsive in having screen repair person come and fix. Caution, the tenant downstairs has a cute dog, who likes to bark and she also likes to feed the pet roosters and chickens, so be ready to be awakened by them.. The street traffic is pretty heavy so sitting on the front porch is not the best. The back lanai is not a wrap around, but is picturesque...really enjoyed the cows and horses in the back of the property...Tunnels is a hike up the road, not right across the street...get there early if you want to park, otherwise, hike it. There is a great beach accessible by walking down a dirt road about a block away...great for watching the kite surfers..but pretty rough breaking waves..not the best for swimming in. Loved the local charm of the area, especially Hanalei, close by. Don't shop at the Big
Save in Hanalei...really poor attitudes by the cashiers..and very overpriced...a loaf of bread cost $6. Shop in Princeville, or better yet, spend the time at Costco down in Lihue. The rental home served it's purpose, but it wasn't up to our expectations. The bed linens certainly didn't feel as advertised...nor the towels and mattresses. Note, you are really paying for location...not anything special about the house itself. We would use this magmt company again as they really did try to make things right, but would not stay at this place again...Good for a short stay most likely, but anything beyond that, stay somewhere else. -

Laguna Beach, CaliforniaThis was the best travel experience of my life!
Left on 10/04/2010 for a stay in August 2010
I normally would never write a review of a travel experience, however I felt so inclined to do so coming back from one of the most amazing trips I've had. My husband and I went to Kauai for our 10th anniversary. We had the pleasure of renting an amazing home on the north shore of Kauai-- Ikena Makana at Tunnels Beach. This home was truly fantastic, the decor was beachy, the home was clean, you could walk to the beach, the views of the mountains were amazing and best of all it was so well priced. I've already recommended this 3-bedroom home to a co-worker and his family. Amazing experience, I cannot wait to go back!

South Lake Tahoe, CaliforniaThe perfect getaway house
Left on 10/03/2010 for a stay in June 2010
On my trip to Hawaii I was looking for a cozy, authentic, clean, vacation rental to spend the week in. Not only did I get all of those things I also got a house that truly brought out all the wonderful things of Kauai. This house is tucked away in Haena where you feel completely immersed in your Hawaiian getaway. It is walking distance from beautiful beaches, beautiful hikes, secret hideaway spots, and some amazing views. It is also the perfect place to come back to after a long day of adventures because you really feel at home once you walk in the door, and you can't help but relax.
