Compared with the crowded and over-developed tourist centers on West and South Maui, the north shore is still relatively pure and unspoiled. Having visited all of the other Hawaiian Islands, except for Lana’i, we decided to visit Maui over the holidays in 2012-13. When you are going to spend a month on Maui, or any new place in the world, you look for a really unique location and accomodation.
As we looked through our options online we knew we had found it when we saw the Starwind Cottage listing. We booked a whole year in advance because there was simply no second choice for us.
Starwind Cottage is a place where we could be at home in the most beautiful setting. The photos are excellent but they cannot capture the serenity and magic of Starwind.
From the deck, as you look south toward Haleakala you feel that you are out of place and time, looking at a landscape at a moment in creation. (Not that at creation, amenities such as hot-tubs, luxurious beds and endless bath towels, a beautiful kitchen and bamboo floors were around!) Bev and David spoiled us in every way from the moment we said “aloha” when we arrived until we sadly said “aloha” the day we left.
Bev outdid any hostess we have ever met in our travels, and we have traveled a great deal, including abroad. The guest fruit basket included a Maui Gold pineapple, mangos, papayas, guavas, apple bananas from their gardens, strawberries, as well as breads, granola and even a bottle of French champagne to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary. We spent our anniversary at the cottage with Bev and David getting to know each other and learn more about Haiku and their life on Maui. Always unobtrusive, Bev would phone to make sure we were supplied with everything we needed.
We explored the whole island and one day we took the path that runs behind all the “posh” Wailea resorts with their rows and rows of beach chairs and tents, swimming pools and people. We both said after a roundtrip walk of 3 miles, “let’s go home to Starwind!” The cottage is a haven of beauty and relaxation, but not far from all that Maui has to offer. Sherry was delightful and took care of our linens, towels and the hot tub.
Derek kindly brought us some freshly caught ahi which he cut and arranged on a sashimi platter for us. Ono-licious!
We cannot recommend Starwind and our extraordinary hosts Bev and David more highly. You gave us the experience of a lifetime. Mahalo nui loa!

My fiance, now husband was lucky to stumble upon this piece of heaven. We selected Maui for our destination wedding/ honeymoon. This was our first experience ever with Maui and Maui Tradewinds. Bev & David (cottage/ Starwind owners) are by far the nicest couple. They were born to do this... not only did they think of every and anything a person could need, they have added a professional touch that is impecable. We were so spoiled by their spectacular view, hot tub, fully equipped kitchen, plethora of included goodies, beautifully manicured grounds and impecably clean facility. We know that we would be doing a disservice to ourselves if we stayed any other place on Maui for our retrun trips (we will be going again). I could never thank Bev & David enough for their hospitality. They made you feel so welcome, like family. No question or need was silly. We just felt so at home. Aloha to a T!!! Five stars isnt enough of a grade. Notes: you wont need the air-conditioner, so dont worry about that, although they do have on in the master bedrrom. Try the fruits, all of them (more than likely, Bev picked them herself) Dont waste time considering a touristy- resort. We swam on many of their beaches, including the ones close to the Tradewinds/ Starwind cottage. Im so glad we selected to have privacy, our own romantic abode... The master bedroom has the most comfortable bed ever. We slept great everynigh. Ive never been able to say that about any other accomodation away from home.

Mana grocery store in Paia- you wont be dissapointed.
The road to Hana- do it!! So neat!!!
